FROM THE EAST Brethren, As we start the New Year I would like to take a moment and reflect on Robert Burns’ version of Auld Lang Syne. The first stanza is as follows: Should auld acquaintance be forgot And never brought to mind? Should auld acquaintance be forgot, And auld lang syne? A modern English translation would be: Should we forget our former friends By whom we set great store Should we forget the friends we’ve met And the brave days of yore? I assume many of us have sung those words on a New Year’s Eve without thinking about it too much. Until I read the Short Talk Bulletin of December 1995 (from which I took the translation above) I certainly never thought about it. The backstory is interesting in that it claims the song was initially centered on two young men who drifted apart after their early schooling, and who, after re-uniting, reminisced about their earlier times together, the happy experiences they had together and the kindly folk they met. I can identify with that as I have memories of happy experiences in the lodge and the kindly folk I’ve met here. I hope that after this year we will have many happy experiences that we can look back on fondly. One of my goals for the year is a focus on social events and expanding them beyond potluck dinners and fellowship breakfasts. I’ve asked a couple of brothers to form a social committee to look into some possible activities such as a Diamondbacks baseball trip, a horseshoe tournament, a picnic, or a trip to Gaslight Theater. We’ll see what we can do. Other goals for the year include continuing the excellent ritual work we do in lodge and the great number of degrees we are able to confer, conducting official visits to other lodges, support for the Bikes for Books program by using 50/50 drawings funds, support for other charities and youth groups, improved multimedia outreach such as a revised web page and Facebook page, and continued Masonic education extending beyond stated meetings & with other lodges. This is an ambitious agenda but one that can be achieved with the help of the brethren and family. I will be contacting many of you, and may have already, to serve on various committees to work on achieving these goals. Let us go into this New Year with hopeful hearts and a focus on making good men better so that the lodge and the community are better places to be. Leigh Creighton Worshipful Master

FROM THE WEST

Brethren, A new year is upon us, and Tucson Lodge continues to

grow in a surge of new candidates and eager Entered

Apprentice Masons! I am excited in the energy I see in

our newest members, and their zealous attitude makes

our lodge even stronger. The challenge of course is to

keep them busy and interested, and with the vision of

our newly installed Master, I am sure this challenge will

be achieved.

Due to the holidays, we will continue to initiate the two

of the four new candidates we voted on last month.

These degrees will take place on January 14 and

January 21 respectively. We are also planning on

having a second degree at the end on the month on

January 29. Please support our newest Entered

Apprentice Masons with your attendance and

encouragement.

Other events that will be occurring in January are as

follows:

Job’s Daughter Officer Installation on January 3rd. All

Masons are invited to attend to show their support.

There will also be a Grand Lodge Town Hall meeting

at the Downtown Lodge in the Scottish Rite building on

January 19 at 6:00PM.

Also January 30 in the Sabbar Shrine at 7:00PM the Southern Arizona Masters and Wardens Association (SAMWA) will be meeting to discuss the upcoming George Washington degree on February 21. This will be a Master Mason degree, and there are still some parts open if you would like to volunteer. If you are interested, please contact me or visit the SAMWA web site https://sites.google.com/a/sabbarshriners.org/samwa/ .

FROM THE SOUTH

Brethren,

As we begin a new year we reflect on the past and plan for the future. The past year has been full of blessings for Tucson Lodge #4. We grew in membership size as well as in friendship through many special fellowship events. We had a great Chili cook-off, monthly breakfasts, and Deadwood and Widows’ luncheons, among others.

We came together to raise money, goods, and services for Bikes for Books, the VA Hospital, rebuilding of the Valley of Tucson Scottish Rite Temple, and many other great endeavors. Additionally, we came together to support the training of educators who work with children at risk.

As we begin 2015, we look forward to many great things to come. We look forward to new opportunities to serve each other and the community. We renew our commitments to the lodge and to serve as examples for prospective candidates of what the nature of Freemasonry entails. You will see this reflected in our stated meeting dinners, now being prepared by members of Tucson Lodge #4. This promises to be an exciting endeavor in the New Year.

I leave you with this quote, an excerpt from the Masonic Monthly:

“May the new year dawn upon a brighter day, and witness at least the commencement of a return to a new era – one of peace:, and may the spirit of Freemasonry fail not to take advantage of the opportunity to do its best and utmost for the promotion of goodwill between all portions of this once happy nation.”

Fraternally,

Chris Jordan Junior Warden

A LITTLE POEM, SO TRUE IT HURTS

Another year has passed And we're all a little older.

Last summer felt hotter And winter seems much

colder.

There was a time not long ago When life was quite a

blast.

Now I fully understand About 'Living in the Past'

We used to go to weddings, Football games and

lunches.

Now we go to funeral homes And after-funeral

brunches.

We used to have hangovers, From parties that were

gay.

Now we suffer body aches And wile the night away.

We used to go out dining, And couldn't get our fill.

Now we ask for doggie bags, Come home and take a

pill.

We used to often travel To places near and far.

Now we get sore backsides, from riding in the car.

We used to go to nightclubs And drink a little booze.

Now we stay home at night And watch the evening

news.

That, my friend is how life is, And now my tale is

told.

So, enjoy each day and live it up... Before you grow to

old!

TO THE STUDY OF GEOMETRY

Geometry and Music in Rosslyn Chapel

William Sinclair established Rosslyn Chapel in 1446, over 568 years ago in Scotland, incorporating symbols now linked to the Knights Templar Order. The architecture was created by Sir Gilbert Hay, a leading scholar at that time, under supervision of William Sinclair of the St. Clair family long connected to Knights Templar. Just eight years ago some of these medieval cryptograms have been recognized and interpreted as music geometrically frozen in architecture.

Father and son, Thomas and Stuart Mitchell, found that 215 cubic shapes carved on the columns and pillars inside Rosslyn Chapel matched perfectly 13 different, specific geometrical sonic patterns. These patterns become visible when a light-weight movable substance like salt crystals or powder are placed on a metal plate then allowed to vibrate over the sound pitches identified. Robert Hooke discovered and used flour on glass plates to view this intriguing way to visualize geometric patterns from sound caused by dragging a violin bow across a glass plate in 1680.

These geometric patterns generated by certain sound vibrations, which include triangles, pentagons and hexagons, can be reliably replicated. In other words, specific sounds create specific repeatable geometric shapes. The tones were intentionally preserved within the architecture of Rosslyn Chapel (See Figure 1) during the 15th century. The knowledge that such phenomena existed and could be communicated was hidden in plain sight as decoration of the pillars and columns. The Rosslyn Chapel was carefully sculpted to preserve ancient, secret, sacred science in scenic, silent stone.

Figure 1: Rosslyn Chapel, Scotland

The key to deciphering the relationship to the notes and the concomitant geometric shapes was located in what is called the Rosslyn Stave Angel. Some of the carved cubes showed the geometric forms for treble clef notes A, B and C. In 2007, the Mitchells

JANUARY LADIES PROGRAM

The January Ladies program is "Personal Safety and Awareness" presented by Ann Huntington, a certified instructor and personal safety trainer. While many people carry firearms, there is much we can do to protect ourselves besides carrying a gun. Simple everyday things that we carry with us all the time--our keys, pens, nail files, cologne, our purses etc...--can all be utilized in a self defense situation. Simply being aware of who and what is around us can help us avoid challenging and/or potentially dangerous situations. Come learn how to keep yourself safe and protected.

DEADWOOD LUNCH—Past Masters and Friends gather on the last Saturday of every month for fellowship at:

LAVERNA’S COFFEE SHOP, STARTING TIME 11:30 A.M.

Deadwood has become a social gathering and tool for the Brothers of our Lodge. The knowledge you pass onto some of our less informed Brethren is priceless. You are the link from the past to the future. The success of our

lodge, and Masonry, is in your hands.

You do make a difference….
