Y ou may have noticed the posters, signage, and brochures placed throughout the J showcasing the much anticipated improvements to the building. Our capital campaign, Growing with Southern Arizona, launched publicly in May and is in full swing! Right now, many of our programs and areas are at capacity. This campaign focuses on three key areas of the J and serves to provide more than aesthetic enhancement; it will enrich the lives of people throughout the Tucson community. The incredible Taglit Special Needs Program currently shares space but lacks a designated area specifically adapted for participants. Redesigned to increase life skills and independent living skills for young adults, this program has had an immeasurable impact for individuals and families in its short 4-year history. “I could write pages about how wonderful JCC’s Taglit program is, from the amazing advocates and staff, to the positive atmosphere of being part of the JCC community, to all the opportunities provided through volunteering, classes, and field trips,” says Christy Leavitt, mother of Hannah Leavitt. “Thank you to everyone involved with Taglit; your work is of paramount importance to Taglit participants, their families and friends, and the entire community we live in.” Other additions to the upstairs area include an indoor playground and additional program space to be utilized by early childhood education, summer camp, and of course, members. These new features will provide an area where children and families can gather, play, and create lifelong memories. In the Sports & Wellness area, the new café entrance, expanded cardio area and additional square footage are critical building blocks for promoting the physical, emotional and nutritional well-being of our community. These changes will also allow for a greater variety of classes and cutting-edge wellness programs. Anyone seeking a healthy lifestyle change at the J will find a holistic approach geared towards people of all ages and abilities. Lastly, a new stairway and shade structure in the Sculpture Garden will create greater opportunities to enjoy the artwork year-round. The Jewish Heritage Center will be incorporated with the garden to create a seamless indoor/outdoor experience. Members, guests, students, and out-of-town visitors will all benefit from the enhanced arts and cultural programming that will now be made available with these improvements. These three projects are designed to improve more than the J—they’re designed to improve lives. Film Creations, a long time valued partner of the JCC, lent their expertise and vast experience to this project by producing our campaign video. Owner, Rick Rose, had this to share, “One step into the JCC and you realize what a tremendous place it truly is. Helping out with this project has been an honor and I’m excited to be a part of something that will have such a great impact on so many people.” Groundbreaking will occur when we reach our fundraising goal. I am honored and thrilled to be the new CEO/President of the Tucson JCC. Since beginning my new role, I have been serenaded by beautiful sounds each and every day. The daily symphony includes hundreds of children enjoying our ECE and camp programs, the adults and children walking through the art gallery appreciating the beauty of the many exhibits that come through, the swim team working hard to prepare for the next meet, and the countless people who come through our doors to work out, play ball, play tennis, or just have a good kibbitz. I can’t wait to encounter all that fall will bring. High Holy Days are just around the corner. The traditional challah we eat on Rosh HaShanah—the Jewish New Year—is round to symbolize the seamless transition from one year to the next, and each layer builds upon the one before it. Here at the J, we are no different. We are always looking to build upon our successes and learn from our challenges. This New Year also brings a time of transition for the J. When Ken Light, our former CEO, started here 27 years ago, it was to build our current facility. When he retired this past June, it was in the midst of a capital campaign to add to and improve our building. In between, there has been unprecedented success in programming, membership, and operations. We invite you to join us as we honor Ken on Saturday, October 12. For more information about this event, please refer to page 4. I also invite you to participate in our annual survey. In the coming weeks, you will receive an email about this as a part of our benchmarking project; your feedback is very important to us. Please take the time to fill out the survey and help us continue to provide excellent programs and services to our members and the community. Lastly, in Jewish tradition we are taught K’nay Lecha Chaver, acquire for yourself a friend. This value lives and breathes at the Tucson JCC each and every day; old friends come together to enjoy, and new friendships are formed daily. I am looking forward to meeting all of you, acquiring friends, and working together to carry on the beautiful sounds found here at the J.

This year, 13 athletes represented the JCC at the 2013 Maccabi Games held in Austin, Texas July 28-August 2. Thanks to a generous donation from the Green Family—Fay, Jonathan, Rachel, Ryan, Aaron and Gabriel via the Shteinshleifer Philanthropic Fund—we were able to lower the cost to athletes. Jason Apodaca, Assistant Director of Sports & Wellness, traveled with 13 athletes to Austin. Team Tucson was represented by ten boys in the 16 & Under

Basketball Division, including: Ryan Green, Evan Rich, Sam Alberts, Spencer Lewis, Ben Millerd, Bernie Silverman, Max Silverman, Zach Giles, Matt Rein, and Noah Meyer. Coached by Scotty Epstein, the boys played hard and made it to the Silver Division Bronze Medal Game. Hayley Flannigan, Becky Monroy, and Heather Rich represented the JCC on a Tucson/Austin mixed team in the 16 & Under Basketball Division. The girls played a great game and beat Team Dallas by 15 points to bring home the bronze medal. The Maccabi games were a huge success! Most importantly, our 13 athletes have memories to last a lifetime.

We Welcome New JCC Staff!Operations

We’re excited to announce Julia Levine as our operations coordinator. She spent her childhood attending after-school programs at her local JCC in Chicago’s north side and her summers were spent at the JCC overnight camp. To this day, she recalls fond memories and maintains many of her friendships built there. Julia is ecstatic to give back to the organization that has helped shape who she is today. Julia has an infectious energy, enjoys playing with her dogs, practicing yoga, and attending the JCC’s Body PumpTM classes.

Jenn Glas has joined the communications team as the new graphic designer. She considers herself a Hoosier as she earned her degree from Indiana University where she studied art, design and telecommunications. Her interests include art history, letterpress and typography. Her previous experience includes product styling and glass award fabrication. So far, Jenn has enjoyed the J’s Body PumpTM , yoga, and spinning classes. She’s excited to take part in our Arts & Culture classes as well.

In an effort to combat the national obesity epidemic that also afflicts children and families locally, we are implementing Discover: CATCH® Early Childhood - a cutting-edge new wellness initiative that has successfully been applied to 19 JCCs across the country. Beginning in August, children enrolled in the JCC’s Early Childhood Education program will be taught the importance of good nutrition and exercise by utilizing their learning environment. “We start with the youngest citizens of our community and seek to create good habits, rather than try and change bad habits,” says Amy DeWitt, Co-Director of Early Childhood Education. “The curriculum is designed to be fun; children are exposed to healthy habits through a variety of music, stories

and activities.”Lessons will include ways to incorporate health education, physical activity and healthy eating choices into the curriculum. An integral part of the program will also address how to reach beyond the classroom and identify

opportunities to collaborate with families. For more information about this new initiative, please contact our ECE department at 299-3000 x114.

Over the past decade, Tucsonans have come to know “Shaliach” as the Hebrew for “emissary.” We will now be introduced to the feminine version of the word as we welcome our new Shlicha and Weintraub Israel Center Director, Oshrat Barel, and her family to Tucson! In early August, Oshrat and her family; husband Eli, daughters Yuval (13), Ronnie (9), and Shira (3) joined us from Hamadia, Israel. In her prior role as Partnership Director for the Jewish Agency Beit Shean Cleveland Alliance, Oshrat acquired a unique perspective on partnership communities working together and learning from each other. She has a strong understanding of how Jewish continuity thrives when personal connections are made.Oshrat’s husband and daughters are very excited to be joining this family shlichut adventure. Shortly after accepting the position she wrote “More than anything, my family and I will do our best and more to bring true and authentic Israel to Tucson.”

The Weintraub Israel Center is a joint project of the Jewish Federation of Southern Arizona (JFSA) and the Tucson Jewish Community Center. This partnership builds a living bridge between Tucson and Israel through cultural events, lectures, parties and more to help foster a strong Jewish identity with Israel at heart. JFSA President and CEO, Stuart Mellan, says “Oshrat has exemplary skills as a community organizer. That, combined with her personal warmth, positions her to be an outstanding asset to our community and our work.”
