Supercharged Corvair-Monza L1ampT recently tested a superchar shy

ged 196 1 Corvait lent to us by Corries and the opt concu~ion il that thf Corvair is going to lah somgt bPatin~ nflxt Season

Basic changES in th e Corvair for 1961 are relaLively minor The overall dimensions and appearance are ide-nt middot ical to last YC8rS model

Till engine has bpcll modified to produce 98 horsepowEr ~nd in this form is known as the Turbo-Air en shygine Changes involve a s implified carshyhuretor air intake system minor carshyburetor c hanges increased piston disshyplacement and air cooling system r(visi o ns

On s~ock model~ (supe rcharging is strictly oPlional ltl nd supplied by the deale r nol the factory) the tripod support automatic choke and air ceanft over the engine cooling blowshyer have been eliminated resulting in a lowering of ergine height Short flat wedge-shaped duc ts extend formiddot ward from each c8rhuretor to scpe rate air cleaning units which while smalle r than previous models provide more effici ent air filtration

The carburetors themselves have neen modiried to rrouce ~emitjvity to air intake restriction which in the past has u-nded to cause ovpr-riching of the mixture In thp new carhurl tors vent passage diame ters have been inmiddot creased and placed between the Ooat howl and the air horn

The 1961 engine displaces 145 cubic inches as compared wiLh 140 cu ins in Ihe 1960 v(rsion and this is accompshylished hy incre ltl$ing the bore to 34~75 ins from 3 375 jn~

The ra ci ng vPTsion as offered by Corries is fitted with the Super TurboshyAir engine which delivers 98 hp at

4600 rpm with a torque of t32 ft lbs at 3000 rpm The standard TurbomiddotAir unit rlelive rs 80 hp at 4400 rpm with a torque of 128 ft lbs at 2300 rpm The increased power in the Super Turbo-Air unit is derivlfl from carshyhuretor adjustment and improved hrtathing

This unit can be fitted wilh a single sta~e belt driven Paxton supercharger which (its snugly beneath the rear deek with no external body mcxlirica shytions necessary With Ihe Paxton fitted the emcine should be red lined at 5800 rpm whi ch allows a comfo rtable marshygin for accidental over-revving fo r valve Ooat rl OM not usually O(cur bemiddot forpound 6200 rpm is rea ched At 5800 rpm th e Paxton rais(gts the air presshysure 10 th ft carburetor as much as 12 p~j whirh ilt (Omppn~ted for by mooifving thp fuel pump in orde r to

keep fuet pnSSlre up With the Pushyton ritted the Corvair truly leaps away from standing starts like a young gazelle and slips nimbly through the gears to its maximum of 8 true 98 mph 5000 rpm A maximum rpm of 5750 in each gear is recommiddot mended for the best results

Corries are offering competition tun shyed 1961 Corvairs with and without superchargers at special prices to qualshyified r9cinl drivtlS an unprecedAnted move

The 1961 Monza Coupe with the 98 hp engine with heater license Ras 4middotspeed transmission sells for $2556 net to the competition driver When prepared for racing which inshycJud(_1 dfgtCamberin~ fitting of fOUT adjustable competition shock absorhshyers and a stahili1N har at the front the price incrClaIes by $83 Installation of the supercharger and necessary modifications brings thp price up by $350 10 an overall $2989

Canadians will be pleased to learn that considerable attention has been paid to th o heating ~yslem in the 1961 COlVsirs the gas heater being reshyplaced by a direct air heating system using enlrine coolin~ air which was found to provide fast and efficient warming of the driving and passenge r areas The hot air is channelled into the cal from the engine blower asshysisted when necessary through a senes of ducts whi ch introduce hot air at Ooor level through outlets at both front and rear aeals A simple control panel benpath the instmmEnt panel carries controls for blower defrost and heatinR bull bull

Turbine Rnd Comprcslor

The exhaust gas turbine is an inward-Row design wilh gas blown tangentially on to (he periphery of its J I-blade singleshysided rotor and emerging from its eye The centrifugal baekshypreSSure which increases wjth speed makes this inward -flow deSign of turbine very stable ltlceelerating well (rom low speeds yc having a minimum tendency to overspeed at otber times Only 297 in in diameter the impeller can run up to as mliCb as 70000 rpm and is made oC a heat-resistant cobalt-base alloy

On the opposite end of a short ihaft to the turbine the centri shyfugal supercharger has a 14-blade impeller die cast in aluminium alloy of Join diameter Fuelair mixture enters tbe centre of this impeller and lea ves its rim where a snaH-shaped casing turns ils velocity energy into rreSSure II is slated that -ybereas resistances to air Row through the Crlrburelter restrict inlet manifold pressures in a conventional engine to sometlting below atmospheric this supercbarged Corvair Spyder engine shows I lb sq in boost at 2500 Tpm r ising to 2 Ibsq in
