Highlights also included themes such as: Super Heros, 80’s, College Apparel, Hawaii, Crazy Socks, Neon, Clan Shirt, Jersey, Rock & Roll, and Color Run. It was a first for the JMI series, but proved to be successful, as participants dressed the part and at times even got their pets dressed for the occasion. Overall the JMI series was well recieved by the community and 1,351 individuals joined the fun at the Tuba City JMI Finale held at Tuba City High School Pavilion on July 22nd. Participants were welcomed with music by DJ SixKiller, health information booths, Zumba instruc- tion, Wings of American running games, fresh fruits, dinner, and color dye fun. Out of all of those who participated, 26 individuals attend- ed each JMI event and recieved Nike hooded sweaters or Nike back packs. They came rain, wind or shine and brought their families to join the fun. Challenge yourself next year and try to attend every JMI. The Health Promotion Program would like to thank each organization, family, and community for their assistance in making this year’s JMI series a success! Breakfast Power!by Brooke Holiday, TCRHCC Health Promotion Specialist

Summer has quickly come and gone. Local schools in and around Tuba City are working hard to keep up with the latest school nutrition standards and offering free/reduced breakfast and lunch programs for all students. School nutrition programs are partnering up with Arizona Department of Educa-tion and Arizona Department of Health Services to update and implement Local School Well-ness Policies to improve the over-all health of students. They play an important role and, ultimately support healthy students in healthy environments will be ready to learn. Why is breakfast so import-ant? According to the Journal of School Health, Journal of the American Dietetic Association and Nutrition Research Review

are credible sources to support that a healthy breakfast is associ-ated with improved cognitive function, especially memory. Helping to support the connec-tion between a sound nutritious breakfast (meal) and academics. So, what can parents do at home? If your child is not already eating breakfast at school. Provide breakfast for your child before the go to school. A simple whole-oat oatmeal with a few bananas and walnuts can go a long way. Other ideas are a slice of whole wheat toast with peanut butter sprinkled with raisins and a glass of low-fat milk are quick, easy-powered breakfast or snack ideas. You can always add some nuts, dried or fresh fruit/vegeta-bles to add more taste and eye appeal. For more ideas for break-fast or after-school snacks follow up with your school nutrition director or look up great ideas on w w w.whatscooking. fns .us -da.gov/ .

Family Fitnessby Brooke Holiday, TCRHCC Health Promotion Specialist

The summer was filled with many families being physical active. A goal this fall would be to plan times throughout the week to be active as a family. Take 10 to 3o minutes together to catch up with kids on how their day went on a nice stroll down the neighborhood or to the local park. Many of our families go to the local high school football field to get their walking or running in. Kids play freely in the middle of the field where mom or dad can keep on eye on them. You also see the occasional frisbee and volleyball to keep the kids playing. Other ideas include a family hike on week-ends. Tuba City is in the middle of great hiking trails in Flagstaff, Sedona, Page, Monument Valley and Grand Canyon. Little towns throughout the reservation host weekend 5Ks and cost are minimal. Being active with the family is fun! Trans-form your birthday celebrations, family reunions and potluck dinners to a new level, but adding fun adventure games for the whole family. Kids today are learning how to play physical activity games that require no equip-ment at all and are fun for adults too. Add a egg toss, watermelon crawl or relay race to keep

everyone moving. Family fitness is fun! Every-one will have a great time and will ask for more. Keep these great ideas for your next family gath-ering. For more information on ways to be physical active with your family contact the Tuba City Health Promotion Program at (928)283-1420.
