3. Calculate the Illumination (lux) on the area of your study desk, or the working desk at

your work place. Compare the value that you obtain with the standard values establish

whether there is sufficient illumination.

Show your calculations clearly, giving the type of lamp you are using.

If the illumination is out of the required standards, suggest all the possible alternative

solutions, to obtain the standard illumination, and decide on the best solution.

Give reasons for your decision.

(Obtain the relevant data from lesson materials or other sources. Indicate the sources from

which you got the data / information.)

4. Define the following terms

• Dry bulb temperature

• Wet bulb temperature

• Dew point temperature

• Specific volume • Humidity ratio • Molar water content

• Relative humidity • Enthalpy

Calculate the enthalpy of 1kg of dry air of the temperature 30ºC having a humidity ratio of 0.015

kg of moisture in the kg of dry air

Cp.air = 1.04 KJ/kgºC Cp.vapour = 2.093 KJ/kg

ºC

ro = 2258 KJ/kg

For self Assessment:. Work out the activities 10,11,12 & 13 in Unit IV (Air conditioning) .Do

not submit these answers for correction!!!

TTX5234 Plant Utilities - Mini Project Themes

Select one of the following themes as your mini project. You are expected to spend about 20

hours in accomplishing this project. (Date of Submission: Please refer the Activity Diary)

26.05.2014

1. Hydrogen Energy (Discuss present state of the development, What problems are

prevailing, What advantages and disadvantages are there)

2. Solar Energy (Include to what extent solar energy is used in Sri Lanka, What problems

are prevailing, Who are the providers of solar energy units in Sri Lanka etc.)

3. Bio Mass Energy (Discuss different types, Present state of the art, Problems,

advantages/disadvantages, Use & prospects of bio mass energy in Sri Lanka)

4. World Oil Crisis (Is there a crisis? Why oil prices go up?, Who are the producers?, Who

control the prices?, How prices have changed in the near past? Etc.)

5. Coal power plants in Sri Lanka (Is it suitable? Why?, What problems are there?, Compare

with Diesel and Hydro power generation, Politics?, Bribery given by Diesel plan owners?

etc.)

6. Safety of Nuclear Power Plants (Is it really clean energy? Threats to the world, Is it

cheap?, etc.)

energy can be saved, what is the present status in developed world? Etc.)

8. Describe the operational principle of an air conditioner working on the principle of

refrigerative cooling. (All components and their functions, Thermodynamics of

refrigerative cooling, Calculation of efficiency of the cycle etc.)

9. Solar water heaters (Different systems, availability in SL, Service providers in SL, Their

products, Comparison of these products)

Those who are employed can select any one of the following themes: 10. Study the steam generation unit available in your factory and write a comprehensive

report on it. Apart from other details, your report should include Type of unit, capacity,

steam plant lay-out, any accessories used, water source and treatment details, and cost of

production.

11. Study the lighting system available in your factory or in one of the departments of the
