Welcome, old camp-
ers and new, to Week 2
at Camp Centerland!
We’ve been beating the
heat this week with
swimming activities, wa-
ter balloons, a “misting
station” to run through,
creek walks, and more.
The theme this
week is “Israel,” so ac-
tivities are focusing on
the land and culture of
Israel. Groups will be
singing songs in Hebrew,
embarking Israel-based
treasure hunts, making
challah for this week’s
Shabbat celebration,
and training like the
brave IDF soldiers with
exercise drills and
squirt gun fights.
There was water,
water everywhere for
our popular Water
Wednesday! Each mod,
our campers had differ-
ent activities to keep
them feeling WET!
Week 2 was our only
short week this summer
due to Independence
Day. But that doesn’t
mean we’re short on the
fun this week! Our sec-
ond week of Chugims
were a blast! Campers
chose between making
clay beads, creating
“puff racers,” baking
challah, rejuvenating
our amphitheater for
Shabbat, or taking pho-
tos to put in hand-made
picture frames.
Check back next
week for more updates
from the Chronicle!
Week 2 is in full swing,
and boy is it hot out there!
Counselors have been helping
campers stay cool with water
-themed activities, frequent
stops at the “hydration sta-
tions” located throughout
camp, and (of course) plenty
of sunscreen for all!
We’d like to apologize to
any campers that are waiting
for their free Camp Center-
land T-shirt. We have sev-
eral sizes on back-order, and
will pass them out as soon as
they arrive. We’d like to
thank you for your patience.
We are so excited by all of
the wonderful Camp Spirit we
have seen this week! Thanks
for an awesome start to our
summer!

Nurse Amy’s Tip of the Week
Be sure to put on plenty of
sunscreen every day! Even if the
weather is cloudy, UV rays are
still reaching the Earth, so
sunburn is still possible even when
the sun is hiding.
The pools were a great place
to cool off during this very hot
week. The children attended swim
lessons in the morning and re-
ceived a report card/skills check-
list on Friday. Basic water skills
levels 1 & 2 are for children
who rely on bubbles or noo-
dles to swim. Levels 1-5 are
for independent swimmers.
Lifeguards are doing res-
cue drills during free swim
times. During the drills, the
lifeguards practice for emer-
gencies by rescuing each
other and the children.
Swimming Levels Explained:
LEVEL 1: Learn floating, glid-
ing, early stroke development,
and treading with teacher as-
sistance and a floatation de-
vice.
LEVEL 2:
Front
crawl,
back-
stroke,
and tread-
ing con-
tinue to
develop, as
well as
jumping in. Children must sub-
merge head fully before enter-
ing this level.
LEVEL 3: Advanced swim tech-
niques needed for strokes
learned in Level 4 & above.
LEVEL 4: Introduction & devel-
opment of breaststroke, but-
terfly, backstroke, front
crawl, sidestroke & elementary
backstroke.
LEVEL 5: Display aptitude in
butterfly, backstroke, breast-
stroke, front crawl, side-
stroke, and elementary back-
stroke.
All of the groups from Negev
to Discovery will have their
overnights on a Thursday eve-
ning. While Sharon doesn't stay
overnight, they are able to enjoy
a special “Stay Late” evening on
Tuesday of Week 6. Read the
schedule of overnight to the
right.

Thursday evening is the kick-
off of our overnight experi-
ences, and up first are the Ye-
hudas! The Yehuda counselors
have planned a “Buffalo Sports”
themed night. Our Yehudas will
enjoy creating their own jer-
seys, a World Cup soccer match,
a special “Buffalo team” themed
snack, swimming, a dinner cook-
out, and more!
serve. The Chugim
groups will meet again
on Thursday to com-
plete their activity.
Chugims offer camp-
ers the opportunity
to participate in some
favorite pastimes or
learn a new skill,
game, or activity they
Chugims (hobby groups) are
an old favorite at Camp Center-
land, back again this summer! All
campers are offered a selection
of “Chugs” each week. Each
Tuesday a new set of choices
are introduced. Campers may
sign up for their favorite, al-
though some have limited capac-
ity, and are first come, first
haven’t ever tried
before! Also, during
Chugs, campers can
mingle with new
friends and meet dif-
ferent counselors!
Chugims are quickly
becoming a favorite
that of all campers
here at Centerland!

Greetings from Nature!
Glad you decided to stop by
and take a look at “The Special-
ist Spot.” I’m very glad to return
as the Nature specialist and
have a great summer exploring
and expanding the knowledge
about the wonderful world we
inhabit. In case you are wonder-
ing, I am a junior at Liberty Uni-
versity majoring in none other
than environmental science.
With so many things to ex-
plore, it’s hard to find a place to
start! Last week we went over
terland so they deserve a shout
out!
Lately, we have been looking at
common household items
and how long they take to
decompose. This certainly
reinforces the importance
of recycling. We have many
daring adventures, exhila-
rating games and shocking
facts about the world to
come. So, thanks for read-
ing and make sure to take
in the great outdoors!
