6 SUBLIME ICELANDIC EXPERIENCES

Northern Lights - There is nothing like lying on your back, looking up at clear skies on a dark winter’s night, andwatching the riveting Northern lights dance across the sphere

The Artic Circle - Iceland sits just below the Arctic Circle with the exception of one small island 40km off shore.Grimsey, a home to less than 100 people and hundreds of thousands of birds, is a bird watcher’s paradise

Glacial Ice - Given just how green Iceland gets, it is not surprising that people wonder about the country’s seemingly misleading name. But there is actually a fair amount of ice in Iceland. Iceland is home to the biggest glacier in Europe and tenth of its surface is covered by ice

Midnight Sun - Summer in Iceland is a magical time. The whole island comes alive under the constant sunlight. Taking a stroll in the midninght sun will show you Iceland in another colour

Outdoor Bathing -When the frost sets in and the snow comes down and the wind blows hard, it is time to head to the nearest pool or soak in a geothermal hot spring. The best way to experience the extremes of Icelandic nature is through its stark contrasts

Peace -There is no place like Iceland to enjoy a peaceful time. The least densely populated country in Europe. Iceland allows you to connect with nature and make you feel like the luckiest person in the universe

ICELANDHeaven on Earth As a small island in the middle of the North Atlantic Ocean, Iceland is a traveler´s dream and the landscape here is incredibly diverse and each region offers its own uniqueness and special charm.

Iceland, the hidden pearl of the north is an absolute paradise. A place of many contrasts and popularly known as “The Land of Fire & Ice”. Iceland is closer than you think and far different than you ever imagined. This is the country where majestic impressions make a permanent mark on the hearts of every visitor.

Be it moss covered lava elds, barren highlands, majestic waterfalls, black sandy beaches or snow covered mountains, Iceland has a lot ofdiversity to offer.

WHEN TO GO TO ICELAND

Winter in IcelandWhile winter may strike some as an odd time to visit Iceland, you will be able to nd bargain fares and affordable room rates at that time, and if the Northern Lights are on your bucket list, it's the perfect time to visit.

The Icelandic winters are mainly known for the Northern Lights, besides being a bit cold. Iceland is on top of a hot spot on the earth and the Gulf Stream warms the country up all the way from Mexico, result-ing in a rather temperate climate. So, even though there is ice in the name of the country, it doesn't get as cold as you would expect this far north.Winter season is from September to April.

Summer in Iceland

For most travellers, however, summer is the time to go to Iceland. This is the time when the days are longer and lled with what seems to be everlasting music festivals. Even the whales know this is the ideal time to visit the country.

Icelandic summers are great times to experience the incredible Glaciers, majestic fjords, hot springs and of course the Midnight Sun. It’s really a unique experience to walk past the mid-night sun. You can also choose to explore the vast/remote terrain of Iceland and feel the intoxicating stillness around you. Summer also brings out the festive spirit of Iceland with local Art, Music and Food festivals. You can witness the charismatic localsenjoying the time of their lives.

TIPSTake into consideration however that between late May and early August you'll have 24 hour daylight, that will both give you extra time each day to explore - as well as give you the extra energy to use up all that time for exploring!

In summertime you should make the most of the long days and explore as much of the countryside as you can. Spend 1 or maybe 2 days in Reykjavík - but spend the rest of the time in the countryside.

DIALOGUE

I needed a holiday. I needed an adventure. I needed a country.

Why not Africa? I was shooting the breeze or the midnight zephyr with a friend over Teh – Tarik when the chat led to animated discussion onvacations and escapades away from daily responsibilities and where we could reward ourselves. My friend told me about INCEPTION where all whims and fancies are catered for. I was hooked by the idea of a dream trip and seeing the African Big Five (Lions, Elephants, Rhinos, Buffaloes and Leopards).

I did my homework thereafter. Told my youngest sister and discovered that going for a safari trip had always been on her list. She had always wanted to see the wild at close range. Apparently, she had been planning a safari trip for years! The rest of the family which included a few aunties were ambivalent on the choice location i.e Serengeti National Park in Tanzania. However, theproblem was not really thedestination but it was the almost impossible task of setting the right time so that everybody could go. My brother-in-law thought I was either having a life crisis or had gone cuckoo.

Met your General Manager, Encik M Khairy A Rahim and we explored the possibilities. Bespoke travel by INCEPTION was indeed the answer. So on 24th July 2016, we gallivanted across oceans from Kuala Lumpur to Killimanjaro for about 20 hours. There was a stopover at Dubai during which I was barred from spending at the duty free shops. (Laughter)

To go on a safari adventure is to experience the greatest outdoor

adventure of them all; to bask in the late winter’s sun and embracing the wind looking for lions, cheetahs, leopards, giraffes or warthogs. And the “gentle” ones like Topis, Thompon’s gazelles or whatever that may come your way on the savannah and to witness the migration! The allurement of wildness in thewilderness seduces you.

Serengeti or “Siringitu” is a Maasai name. It means endless plains or vast and rolling land that runs forever as far as the naked eyes could see.

The Wildebeest or Gnu (pronounced as “noo”) is a large blue or black animal with even-toed, greyish brown ungulates resembling cattle with horned long head, beard and mane. Having the body of an antelopes but with heavy forequarters like a horse with a sloping back. I call it thethree-in-one beast!.

It’s a Dutch word for wild beasts because it was a Dutchman who rst spotted the animals in 1800s.Wildebeest graze with the zebras. Major predators that feed on the wildebeest include lions, hyenas, cheetahs, leopards and crocodiles! Though the Wildebeest are perceived as “dumb,” they are in fact good runners. They can speed from aminimum 50km per hour to amaximum 80km per hour. They are also known to be very strong and can inict considerable injury even to lions. Their mistaken dumbness is, as a matter of fact, known as “swarm intelligence.” As a herd, the animals systematically explore and overcome obstacles as one. I was ratherenamoured by the wildebeestactually because they seemed to run in circles after each endlessdiscussions. Just like us humans! (Shahnaz laughed again).

Why did you choose Africa?

This is a difcult question for me. All moments were best moments! The river crossing was one of those best moments! Alhamdulillah, we were so lucky to see a herd of elephants and sizeable herd ofwildebeests trying to cross the river! By nature, elephants form deep family bonds and live in a tight matriarchal family group of related females. A herd is often led by the oldest and largest female consisting of 8 to 100 elephants depending on the terrains and family size. So, we saw this herd of elephants. Here , see this photo. And we saw the Matriarch elephant, the biggest Matriarch ever, patiently waiting on the other side (our side). And we saw while the herd wascrossing the river, two goofy, adorable baby elephants gamboling and frolicking away mid-stream having the best time

of their live ever!. The baby elephants were completely submergedunderwater for the longest time!. And there were crocodiles and hippos in the river too. And there was this sizeable herd of wildebeestcontemplating to cross the river!I slipped away to pick a ower at the nearby bushes when one of my sisters shouted out that the Matriarch was wandering nearby. Big panic attack! In actual fact, the Matriarch Elephant was checking out the area to ensure her herd of 20 members were safe from unforeseeable harm. Meanwhile, the wildebeest were still dithering to cross the river.

They saw the crocodiles and the hippos but totally missed piggy-riding with the elephants for a safe river crossing. I guessed the wildebeest were clueless without the zebras to do the migration. In the end, the herd decided not to cross after all! Maybe they could not outrun the crocodiles! (Laughters!) I could not decide whether to golf with the boys in Cape Town or follow the girls to the African Diamond Museum and Factory. I wanted to do both! I supposed you can guess what I did!

DIALOGUE

www.twtravel.com.my 21

Did this trip change yourperception about life in general? Would you recommend this trip to the readers and why?

Yes. A resounding YES.

I was truly impressed with what the TTS General Manager crystalized for me after only two discussions and was raring to go for the safari trip. I was made to understand that he conceptualized and created the INCEPTION package about 2-3 years ago where the premise would be bespoke offerings.

An African Safari is an experiential holiday. You Dream of Africa. Travel the world and the seven seas; it’s a holiday of once in a lifetime with a difference. Or simply just something different! You do not need to be an animal-lover prior to leaving for a safari excursion. In-fact, it’s the reverse; you may be converted to one. Of course, my group’s Tour Leader, Encik Khairy’s highly personalized services and the TTS supporting crew who were on 24 hours standby (due to time difference) and TTS strategic partners comprising the African counterpart liaison person named Fred, Wayne the Buffalo Luxury Camp Manager, a safari ranger called Marco and last but not least , Seketo, the soft spoken Maasai trekker made all the difference to an experiential adventure of a life time. This trip utterly beyond my expectations.

As I said earlier, I needed a holiday and an adventure; a fresh environment. Need to rejuvenate.I was under a lot of stress at work. I just packed my bags, took my loved ones along and took time off in the middle of the year for a short holiday. Africa, for me; was so faraway from the madding crowd. A picture paints a thousand words. Beauty is in the eyes of the beholder. All the clichés are apparently true! (Shahnaz laughed out loud again).

Even though none of the animals spoke any human language, their presence spoke volumes. Youreconnect with life. You relax.Ruminate. Reect on Allah’s bounties and creations. AlhamdulillahSyukrillah.

Imagine the sun, the one sun that you see in Kuala Lumpur and that same sun shines over Serengeti plains and yet you get the impression or think that the sun’s rays are slightly different in colour - its brilliance shone over a different settings of akaleidoscopic panorama and vista over the serene Serengeti plains. Whether its sunrise or sunset or the noonday sun, it’s the same sun. There is only one sun. There is only one me. There is only one Him. But a new environment brings a different perspective to life that seemed to resolve whatever problems that may have beset me. There I was - celebrat-ing life and life’s trials and tribulations. That is a legit reason why everyone reading this should take this African trip.

Has your journey through Africa had a lasting impact on you?

Yes, most denitely.

Our African journey was from 24th July to 3rd August 2016. You have to be there to experience it. Masha Allah. Simply awesome! Spectacular! Your INCEPTION tagline succinctlysums it all: an Everlasting Impression. Don’t just take my word for it. Pack your bags and just go.

And Cape Town is simply divine! Robbie, a seven-foot tall Afrikaan and a former rugby player, is a walkingWikipedia on all history, events and things Cape Town-y!. I am now seriously contemplating to retire in Cape Town!

Even though none of the animals talked back to you, they spoke volumes. You reconnect with life and life’s purposes. You relax. Ruminate.

[

[

But in a new environment, it will bring a different or fresherperspectives and resolvewhatever problems that may beset you. Your are rejuvenated. There you go. Celebrate life and life’s trials and tribulations. [

canopy trees, tall grass and intermittent bushes when Seketo and Marco softly whispered “sharibuu” and “assad” followed with their (Maasai) mother tounge. Suspiciously sounded like Arabic for drinking and lion, I thought. Seketo picked up his binoculars and zoomed his eyes into a certain horizon. With my naked eyes, there was nothing to see; no movements, no black spots, zilch! Then Marco announced, “OK!” Two lions were resting under some tall trees. I was ummoxed! He drove like crazy across the plains. Lo and behold! Two lionesses lay sprawling spread-eagled without a care in the world mayhap with sweet dreams (and not even batting an eyelid or even bothered to raise from their languorous siesta under the noonday hot sun when we drove closer to them, I kid you not!)!

Would you like to do more trips? So where’s the next adventure?

Afrmative. We are all but travelers on Earth.

There are so many other places to go and see. I would want to do thefollowing adventures or visit these countries, in random order: Morocco, Antartica or the Mediterranean Cruise, Greek Islands and The Parthenon; Amal Coast, Ulan Bator/ Mongolia,Samarkand, Spain & Granada, the Trans-Siberian Railway Train holidays, The Aurora Borealis or the Machu Picchu. Or to the Moon! (Shahnaz laughed and laughed). Ask me again in the next six months, I am sure my bucket list will change!
