Monthly Newsletter Spring Glen Church, UCC 1825 Whitney Avenue, Hamden CT 06517 December 2014
One of my favorite poets is the Rev. Arnold Kenseth, for 33 years, the
pastor of South Congregational Church in Amherst MA. As fall fades
into winter, and we look ahead to the blur that is Thanksgiving, Advent,
Christmas and New Years, I welcome Kenseth's words that invite us into
the blend of busyness and mystery, gratitude and hope, peace and love,
all bundled together into the span of 35 days this year.
O God, your gifts abound where we are:
The dart and whirl of winter birds,
Snowfall on hills and drift in the valleys,
Children booting home from school,
Food and laughter at the table,
Hands that sew and bake,
Love walking toward us.
So much, so much, and everywhere
And everyday given over and over!
And yourself, in the midst of it all;
Calling our names,
Clearing the way,
and keeping the watch!
Amen and amen and amen.
Arnold Kenseth
It is a time of the year like no other, with a spirit and wonder that often are all we have or all
we need to sustain us for the new year that follows. May this holy season be one in which we
all grow in faith and in appreciation for the church community that feeds and sustains, nurtures
and challenges us into living fully the good news that Jesus came to proclaim.
~Pastor David

CHRISTIAN ACTION COMMITTEE
Angel Tree and Mitten Tree Season's Greetings! The Christian Action Committee is once again collecting gifts for our Covenant to Care and Christian Community Action Apartment families. We offer the following opportunities to brighten the season for someone in need:
Angel Tree: Please come up to Great Hall and choose an ANGEL off the tree, and provide a wish come true for a child in need. The sign up for the Angel Tree begins Sunday Nov 30th, and we ask that the gifts be wrapped and returned to the church by Sunday, Dec 21st.
Mitten Tree: Please look for our Mitten/Hat/Scarf Tree in the Narthex beginning Nov 30th, and consider donating some new warm gear for the mothers and children served by New Reach (formerly New Haven Home Recovery), an organization providing shelter, support and services to women, children and families who are homeless or at risk. Questions? Contact Lee Laster at 203-248-4119 ([email protected]) or Cynthia Licata at 203-287-9302 or ([email protected]).
ADVENT FESTIVAL – DECEMBER 7, 2014
Don’t forget to put the Spring Glen Church Advent Festival on your calendar! Beginning at 3:30 pm in Great Hall, we will gather our creativity together to make Christmas crafts. Come make an ornament for your tree or craft a festive vase/candle centerpiece. Decorate a Christmas cookie. You may prepare a wreath of live greens for your door. (There will be a requested donation of $10 to decorate a wreath.) Both adults and children of all ages can find a craft to complete and take home. After completing the crafts, we will move to the Sanctuary for a pick-up pageant beginning at 5:00 pm. The children will re-create that night in Bethlehem accompanied by the musical talents of our Congregation including the Houston family. Children will be invited to play the parts of the characters at the Nativity including angels, wise men and animals. The Sunday School children will sing “Go Tell It on the Mountain.” This event is entirely family-friendly with lots of carols sung by the Congregation. All children are encouraged to participate in the Pageant, but if your child would rather watch from the pews, that’s fine, too! After the pageant, at 6:00 pm, we will share in a pot-luck supper. Please bring a salad, entrée or dessert that you would be willing to share. Don’t have time to cook or prepare something? Come anyway! All are welcome. There is a sign-up in the entryway for those who can bring something. If you are willing to help with crafts or in any aspect of the Advent Festival, please contact Laurie Bleickardt at [email protected] or at 203 287-9246.

BOOK DISCUSSION: Take this Bread, February 5, 2015
Join Bernadette Welsh for a discussion of Take this Bread by Sara Miles on Thursday, February 5, from 7:00 - 8:30 p.m. Early one morning, for no earthly reason, Sara Miles, raised an atheist, wandered into a church, received communion, and found herself transformed–embracing a faith she’d once scorned. A lesbian left-wing journalist who’d covered revolutions around the world, Miles didn’t discover a religion that was about angels or good behavior or piety; her faith centered on real hunger, real food, and real bodies. Before long, she turned the bread she ate at communion
into tons of groceries, piled on the church’s altar to be given away. Within a few years, she and the people she served had started nearly a dozen food pantries in the poorest parts of their city. Take This Bread is rich with real-life Dickensian characters–church ladies, millionaires, schizophrenics, bishops, and thieves–all blown into Miles’ life by the relentless force of her newfound calling. Here, in this achingly beautiful, passionate book, is the living communion of Christ. If you'd like to order a copy of the book (paperback $12), please contact Debra Tangarone, [email protected], prior to Friday, December 12.
BIBLE STUDY NEWS
Each week, attendees of the Sunday morning Bible Study read and reflect on the Scripture readings that will be read in worship later that day. This term, we’ve explored the parables of the workers in the vineyard and the talents and whether one ought to pay taxes to Caesar. The discussions are lively and oftentimes thought-provoking. I invite you to join us when we resume meeting on Sunday, January 4 in the Fellowship Room at 9:00 a.m. We kicked off a Bible Study for folks in their 20’s and 30’s on October 5. Under the leadership of Braxton and Catie Carrigan, the group has been working its way through the book of James. All in their 20’s and 30’s are welcome to join the group on alternating Sunday nights at the church. A light dinner is served at 5:30 with study from 6:00 to 7:00. Child care is provided. Contact Braxton Carrigan, [email protected], for more information. – Debra Tangarone Pastor David’s Monday afternoon Bible Study (1:30–3:00) will resume January 11th; we’ll be starting a study of First Corinthians.
UPDATE ON WORSHIP SERVICE RECORDINGS
For many years recordings of the worship service have been made available on cassette tapes and for the past two and a half years on CDs. Over the last year it has become apparent that few of the recordings on cassettes have been taken—in fact, during the period from July through October this year no cassettes were taken for eleven of the fifteen services. Therefore, while a master cassette recording will continue to be made each week, copies on cassette will no longer be made available except on request. Each week’s master copy on cassette tape is held for approximately nine months before it is erased and reused. The four copies on CD will still be made available, and the master CD created each week is held permanently. The recordings are a great way to make the services available to members and friends who cannot be present in person. The “team” that manages the recording process each week is more than willing to make additional copies in either format (cassette tape or CD) if asked. If anyone does wish more copies, please contact the church office or a member of the recording “team.” Recording “Team”: Rick Brownell, Doug Hawthorne, Lee Heston

Women’s Retreat Update:
We will meet on Wednesday, January 7 at 6:30 p.m. to continue planning
for the upcoming retreat. The Retreat will take place at Incarnation
Center, in Deep River, from Friday night March 13-15. It is a time for
personal reflection, spiritual growth, relaxation and fun. This year we are
hoping to invite leaders from outside the planning team to lighten the
load on all of us, and give planners a chance to be “on retreat” too.
Please join us on January 7 in the Fellowship Room, or let Pastor Clare know about your interest and
your ideas.
Habitat For Humanity - Saturday, December 13th The Spring Glen Church crew has its next date for the Habitat for Humanity Sleeping Giant Build set for Saturday, December 13. We will meet at 8:30am at the church and go to the work site together. Please contact Arnie Cary ([email protected]) or Richard Davis ([email protected]) for more information.
SPRING SERVICE TRIP TO WEST VIRGINIA INVITES YOU!
Do you want to help change lives? Build relationships? Give hope? Preach the Gospel with your living? If you answered YES to any or all of these questions, we have just the opportunity for you!! It’s not too late to join the Spring Service Trip to Appalachia the week of April 20, 2015! Appalachia Service Project (www.asphome.org) has been serving the impoverished in central Appalachia since 1969, yet the need is still greater than they can meet. Working alongside the homeowners, our group – hopefully with YOU (!) -- will bring our strong hands and our
compassionate hearts as we seek to make their homes “warmer, safer, and drier.” We will swing hammers, swap stories and share meals with folks from all across the country, all while strengthening connections within our own group, too. The plan is to travel to Guyan Valley, WV, arriving on Monday April 20, and work Tuesday April 21 to Saturday April 25 on a variety of home repair or reconstruction projects. The cost of the trip (which can be paid for in increments) includes climate controlled housing, hot showers, warm beds, three meals a day, and entertainment in the evening. We will drive down as a group and, depending on our numbers, work together in smaller work groups from 8:00 to 4:30 each day. We’d love to get our group established by the end of January, but the sooner you commit the better, as participation is based on availability of space at the facility. If you have limited skills, don’t worry – we plan to arrange workshops to learn the basics. If you are worried about the cost, let’s do some fundraising! So far FIVE wonderful Spring Glenners have committed and we have some North Haven Folks expressing interest, too. Won’t you join us?? Bring a friend? It’s guaranteed to be a priceless experience! I look forward to hearing from you! Jennifer Hanrahan. 203-848-0741 [email protected].

Christmas Caroling The Spring Glen Church Annual Christmas Caroling will be on Sunday, December 21, at 6:30 PM. Everyone of all ages is welcome! Please come out dressed warmly to walk around the neighborhood, caroling at many houses. We'll all go back to the church for hot chocolate afterwards. Please bring your own mugs, and a plate of Christmas cookies to share!

The December meeting of the Knitting Group will be held on Monday, December 8 at the home of Peg Limbacher. All crafters are welcome. Questions? Please contact Connie Rogers at 203-248-2629 or email [email protected] or Jean Davis at 203-248-6685 or email [email protected]

On November 16 during worship, Nancy Whitney and Pastor Clare showed the children the beautiful Communion Table quilt made by Nancy. They explained how the quilt, in a log cabin pattern, and made of many small pieces, represents all of the members of the church. The center of each square is red and represents the hearth and heart of the cabin. The dark fabric represents the walls that protect us, and the light fabric is the shining sun or God's light shining on us. Every piece, of varied colors and sizes, is needed to make the unique pattern which is our church.
Abraham's Tent
January 19-January 25, 2015
"…I was a stranger and you invited Me in” (Matthew 25: verse 35)
We are once again one of many churches throughout the New Haven area participating to provide overnight shelter in our Great Hall for 12 male clients from Columbus House. Volunteers are needed for the following: to provide, serve, and share meals with guests; to share after-dinner activities such as games, movies, and conversation; to stay overnight and help serve breakfast in the morning. Please consider joining us the week of January 19th, 2015. Sign-up sheets are in the Great Hall or the Entryway.
Please note: This year we have made a change to the sign-up process. We included volunteer opportunities on the sign-up sheets for our Abraham’s Tent faith partner, B’nai Jacob, a synagogue in Woodbridge. Their involvement in this ministry is a great example of interfaith cooperation.
If you have any questions, please feel free to contact Alice White, [email protected], or Sue Spight, [email protected]. Thank you, and many blessings to you all… Alice White and Sue Spight

October Financial Report Expenses exceeded in October by nearly $17,000, bringing our operations balance to
-$4,510.66. To put this into perspective, in October of 2013, we had a monthly deficit of
$12,078.79, but our resulting operations balance was $524.22.
Current pledges are where they should be at the end of October.
However, overpaid pledges and interest/investment income are way
under budget. Overall, income is slightly under where it should be at this
time of year. Our income is $21,000 less than it was at the end of
October a year ago.
Overall, expenses are under control; however, there are individual line items which are over
their budget and should be monitored.
Our traditional large ticket items were paid in October - minister annuity and property insurance.

A reminder as we approach the end of the year - please do not hold on to bills, reimbursement requests, etc. until the end of December. Submitting them as expenses incur helps in the budgeting process so that we have a clear picture of where we stand and are not hit by a big surprise at the end of the year with late expense submissions. There are check request forms in the office available for your use, and please remember receipts must be attached and that any check requests need to be approved by the Chairperson of the committee being charged for the expense. The last day items will be accepted for processing in 2014 will be Sunday, December 28, so please make sure all items are turned in prior to that time. A copy of the detailed Treasurer’s Report is always available in the church office or on the Committee bulletin
board for anyone to review; copies can also be emailed by contacting Sue Wilber at 203-288-5847 or by email
at [email protected]. If there are specific questions regarding the church’s financial health, please contact
Treasurer Sue Wilber or Senior Trustee Bethany Appleby.

Dear SGC friends,
Maggie and I want to thank you all for your support and caring during her recent
surgery and rehabilitation in New Hampshire. As most already know, Maggie
took a fall late at night on September 2nd and broke her left femur. She had
surgery to repair her leg two days later and since then has been in a rehab center in
Meredith NH. Maggie was able to return to our home in Middletown on Nov 6th
where she is continuing her physical therapy and rehabilitation at home.
Many thanks for your caring--cards, emails, phone calls, numerous offers to help,
sympathetic ears willing to listen, and wonderful home-cooked meals. Moments
such of this, when lives change in a flash, are such important reminders of the
wonders of God's presence and the comfort of the church community. We look
forward to her mobility continuing to improve in the days ahead.

Christian Action Committee
Thanks to all who supported Christian Action and provided Thanksgiving dinner (and more) for 35
families. We celebrated with a gratitude brigade, with our children bringing some of the food
gatherings to the altar for a special Time with Children.
On behalf of the board of directors, staff, and women and children we serve, Happy Holidays from all of us at New Reach!
The holidays are a wonderful time of year, to be with family, friends, and our loved ones. It is also a time to reflect on the impact New Reach is making on the community and we wanted to share how you have helped build hopeful futures for many women and children:
New Reach sheltered 203 families, including 311 children
The Stable Families Program prevented 99% of families from eviction in Bridgeport.
107 families living in the shelter were housed through our Connecticut Rapid Re-Housing
Program.
46 Veterans were housed through the Supportive Services for Veterans Program.
