Rialto High honors NROTC students

Q: I’ve been hearing about Prop. 39 in the news. What’s that all about? A: Prop. 39 is a ballot measure that was passed in 2012 that closed a corporate tax loophole and provides $550 million, for five years, for school dis-tricts in the State. The-se funds must be used for energy efficiency projects. Our District has been awarded over $1 mil-lion a year for the next five years. We are planning to use those funds to upgrade light-ing with energy effi-cient bulbs such as LED, which use only 20% of the electricity of traditional bulbs. We will also upgrade and repair aged air conditioners and heat-ing units. Pool covers for Ei-senhower High School will be added to save money on heating and water. These projects are designed to work in concert with our ener-gy conservation efforts. By embracing a “using only what we need” attitude, we have re-duced our energy usage by over 8%since last February. Great job RUSD!

Boyd El. to hit the Big 60!

On May 9, 2014 J. Calvin Boyd Ele-mentary School will celebrate 60 years of existence but Boyd staff is already

making plans for the 60th Birthday Party. J. Calvin Boyd was born in Boyd Mill, Ohio in 1861. He became a be-loved teaching prin-cipal at Rialto Ele-mentary School in 1903, which was later named after him. After his educa-tion career was completed he served on the RUSD Board of Education and as the town mayor.

Marina Madrid is the Principal of Boyd Elementary School. She has begun the stage of planning a celebration for RUSD’s oldest ele-mentary school. “We are excited about the two day event (May 8 and 9) to which we are in-viting alumni and former teachers and administrators of Boyd to attend,” said Madrid. “It’s a histor-ical moment.”

Hundreds of parents and relatives gathered to observe and cheer, at the Rialto High School JROTC Mili-

tary Inspection and Cadet Promotion Cer-emony, which was held January 24, 2014, 9:15 a.m., on campus.

The JROTC cadets performed military drills to their perfection. RHS Principal Arnie Ayala assisted RHS Naval JROTC Com-mander Sandy Jones in rewarding cadets with pins and certifi-cates of achievements. “I’m so thankful for the support of our par-ents, families and for the leaders and staff of Rialto High School,” replied Commander Jones, “but mostly, I am so very proud of the determination of these fine young men and women who have demonstrated leader-ship and character.” Shannon Lara, whose daughter, Alex-andra Lara added, “We love Commander

Jones. He has brought so much to this JROTC Program that I drive my daughter an hour to make sure she is here.” Jones also awarded RHS JROTC Chief, Donald Meredith, with a plaque for his service to the program. Mere-dith, who lives in Temecula, relocated to that specific area. “We will have a void with Chief Meredith leaving,” replied Jones. “He was always the first in, and last out. The cadets and I will miss him, immensely.” The RHS JROTC stood true to their mot-to: “Preparing Leaders and Citizens of Excel-lence: Morally, Mental-ly and Physically.”

RUSD proud of its Military Student/Cadets… From left, Rialto High School Navy JROTC Com-mander, Sandy Jones, assists Rialto High School Principal, Arnie Ayala, and Area 11 Managing Commander, Kenneth Liles, in the promoting and pinning of Cadet/Master Chief Juan Carrera, 11th grade student and Rial-to NJROTC Battalion Senior Enlisted Advisor.
