Software 2 The fun of learning with Letterland brought

to your computer!

Letterland Software 2 adds another dimension to learning with Letterland. Designed to be used at home or at school, this software

helps to develop early literacy skills with young children (5-7 years).

Clever Cat, Hairy Hat Man and all their Letterland friends appear in three interactive games that help children with reading and spelling (including the digraphs ch, sh, wh and th). Using this software, children can also complete their own birthday card,

complete a party invitation, send a message with flowers, or write a short letter. All four cards can be printed out so children can see the

results of their efforts!

Also available Letterland Software 1 contains five interactive games that help young

children (3-7 years) with letter formation, matching words to pictures, reading and spelling.

LETTERLAND GAMES Letterland Software 2 includes three games and also writing

activities which are easy for children to access from the main

menu by clicking on the relevant box.

The games can be played by either one or two children. Others

can watch, reading the screen. Boxes at the bottom of the screen

show the players their current scores. The highlighted box

shows whose turn it is. The writing activities can be carried out

by one child or a small group working co-operatively.

Muddled words This game involves unmuddling three to six letter words. Children type the correct word on the flashing blue line, then

click on go or press enter to move on. If the word is correct, the

muddled version disappears and is replaced by the picture-

coded word on the blue line and the appropriate picture in the box. If the word is typed incorrectly before pressing go, children

can use the backspace key to delete letters.

Help is given for a wrong answer. If a word is spelt incorrectly,

on the first occasion the initial letter appears. The second time

the second letter appears and the picture flashes briefly. The third time, the correct picture-coded word and picture appear to show how it should be completed.

Children score three points for each correct answer, but the

number of points reduces the more attempts they need. The

game ends after one player has unmuddled 15 words or two players have unmuddled 24 words.

Skills practised Spelling and word recognition.

Fill the gap Using picture cues, the children fill gaps in four

words, or complete a word in a sentence, with the correct digraph. As a

balloon containing a

picture-coded digraph floats up the centre of the screen, the children click on the

picture square where the digraph will correctly complete the word.

If the chosen digraph is correct, the balloon pops and the

completed word appears with picture coding. The picture-coded digraph also appears beside the picture (except in speech bubble sentences). If an incorrect digraph is selected, the correct

picture-coded digraph flashes in the gap and the balloon stops briefly for comparison.

For each player, the first four words to be completed contain sh

and wh, the second four contain th and ch, and the following

choices contain a mixture of the four digraphs. Some balloons

contain digraphs which will not fit any words. The children can

either wait for that balloon to exit the screen or speed up the digraph selection by clicking on the balloon. It will quickly

disappear from the screen and be replaced by another balloon.

When all four words have been completed, they stay on screen for reinforcement. Clicking on next will bring up the next four

words. The game ends after one player has filled the gap in 20

words or two players have completed 32 words. Players can score four points for each correct answer. Two points are deducted for a wrong answer.

Skills practised Identifying digraphs, hand-eye co-ordination and word recognition.

With the help of Clever Cat, Poor Peter, Fireman Fred and Lucy

Lamp Lady, the children can complete a birthday card and a

party invitation, send a message with flowers or write a short

letter. Clicking on the left pointing arrow will take children back

to the card selection menu. All four completed messages can be

printed out by clicking on the print box.

Alternatively, the cards can be printed out for the children to

write in their message and colour the pictures, or to draft before

they sit at the computer.

Skills practised Familiarity with the qwerty keyboard,

Find the pair This matching game is

played like the card game Pairs. Initially four words

and their corresponding

pictures appear briefly

before the 'cards' turn

over. After they have been 'shuffled', eight blank red

'cards' appear on screen. Children then click on two

blank red 'cards' to try and find a matching word

and picture pair.

If an incorrect pair is chosen, those two 'cards' are turned to

their blank sides and further pairs can be made. If the pair is

correct, it stays on screen and that player continues to try and

match the other words and pictures. When all the pairs are

uncovered, the 'cards' reshuffle and show the picture and word pairs beside each other with the initial letter picture-coded.

The game ends after one player has found 16 pairs or two

players have found 24. Two points are awarded for every

correct pairing.

Skills practised Initial sound recognition, visual memory, word

and picture matching, sight word recognition.

QUIT Clicking on the main menu icon on the bottom left-hand side of

the screen enables children to return to the main menu either to select another game or to quit altogether. If quit is required,

click on the large 'q' at the bottom right-hand side of the screen.
