Dear Parents & Carers,

There is so much to update you about….

Ravenous Readers Mini-Learning Adventure

We held our Autumn mini-learning adventure recently which was aimed at supporting children to write high quality entries in their reading record each week. As per our Homework Policy, we ask that all children read and record at least three times per week. Parents with younger children can do the writing for children but we do want to encourage children to become more independent as they get older.

School Council Fundraising : Children in Need

Well done to our school council for arranging fundraising for Children in Need. As a school we raised £384. A great start to our fundraising for the year!

Swimming

At OGPS, we provide swimming lessons for children in Y4. They visit Vale Farm Leisure Centre and are taught by professional swimming instructors. This year we are trialling a new system whereby one class attends for half year having an hour lesson rather than 30mins weekly. The school does invest a great deal in this curriculum provision with the cost of the pool, staff and transport amounting to £11,000 per year.

Parent Governor Vacancy

You will be receiving a letter next week regarding a vacancy on our Board of Governors for a parent governor. If you are interested, or know someone who would be brilliant in the role, make sure you read and respond to the letter.

On a personal note, thank you for your kind words regarding my soon to arrive baby! I expect to be commencing my paternity leave from Monday 27th November and know that Mrs Dean and Mrs McAndrew will do a brilliant job in my absence.

Best wishes,

Mr. James Simmons, Headteacher

Anti-Bullying Week Nov 2017 Throughout ‘Anti-bullying Week’ the children have worked on activities highlighting that we are ‘All different, all equal’. The week started by the children taking the opportunity to celebrate their uniqueness and individuality with ‘Odd Socks Day’. It was amazing to see the array of colour and the wonderful creativity of those who accessorised their own socks with additional decorations. During the week, the children have been developing their understanding of what bullying is and thinking about ways it can be tackled. One of the key focuses has been to enable them to identify the difference between a friendship issue and bullying. Each class had a positivity box in which the children could record acts of kindness throughout the week and it was delightful to see how many acts were spotted. By the end of the week, new ‘Anti-bullying ambassadors’ were selected from each class in KS2 and the KS1 children were selected for their acts of kindness. The children had many opportunities to ‘Celebrate Difference’ and it was a particular focus during PSHE. To conclude the week, the classes were asked to evaluate their learning. Throughout EYFS and KS1 they were able to identify ways that we are different and how we are equal... It is good being different, we can be who we are. Even if we don’t look the same, we can play together. We can treat everyone fairly. Share our stories and experience. It’s good to be unique. Celebrate each other’s festivals and join in each others’ games. Bullying is when someone is unkind to you repeatedly, not just

when it happens once.

Throughout KS2, they were able to identify what bullying is and what to do about it: Hurting someone and being mean all the time. Repeating actions that make someone sad again and again. Tell an adult, don’t just ignore it. There are names; ring leader, bystander There are types of bullying; physical, emotional, cyber Tell a parent, a teacher or anti-bullying ambassador. Don’t keep bullying to yourself. Make friends with the victim. Bullying is not banter. Report it, don’t support it.

As a school, the children have worked together to create differ-ent pieces of a jigsaw and Nursery have joined in by decorating their own odd socks. This will be put together to make a display showing that we are all different, all equal and that as a school we all fit together.

80th Celebration Pupil Competition - Get Creative and be Part of OG History! In the spring and summer term of 2018, we will be focussing on celebrating that the school has been open for 80 years. The highlight will be a school open day on Saturday 30th June 2018 for present and past pupils as well as the local community. There will be lots more details to follow in January - keep looking in newsletters and on the website in the new year! Back in 1988, the school made and sold mugs to celebrate its 50th birthday. We are running a competition to design the mug that we will create to celebrate our 80th! Here is a picture of the one from 1988, what do you think the design on our 80th mug should be? The deadline for the competition will be Monday 15th January and we hope lots of children will send in their designs. This is your chance to have your design be part of our school history! You can print the next page to help you design your entry. Make sure you put your name and class on your entry before handing it in. E-Safety Advice for Parents regarding You Tube

What is the problem?

You may have seen news reports about inappropriate children’s videos on YouTube.

These are videos that, at first, appear to be for children, as they include cartoon characters such as Pep-pa Pig, or characters from Disney films such as Frozen. However, later on the videos become violent or disturbing. One, for example, shows Peppa Pig being tortured at the dentist.

The videos can appear in YouTube search results when children look for genuine children’s videos.

YouTube says that such videos will be age-restricted if they are reported by users, so they cannot be viewed by anyone under 18.

This factsheet explains how you can protect your child when they are using YouTube apps or the web-site.

What safety options are there on YouTube Kids?

The YouTube Kids app automatically filters out inappropriate content. However, YouTube explains that “no algorithm is perfect” and “your child might find content you don't want him or her to watch”.

To help protect your child in YouTube Kids, you can set parental controls and change settings: tap the ‘Lock’ icon in the bottom corner of any page, enter your custom passcode and click ‘Settings’. Here you can:

Turn the search function off, so your child can only see recommended, curated videos under each

category on the home screen: toggle ‘Search’ to off

Set a timer to limit how much time your child spends on the app: select ‘Timer’ and use the slider bar

or the plus and minus icons to set a time limit, then tap ‘Start Timer’

You can also block videos or channels you don't want your child to watch:

Tap the 3 dots (‘more’) at the top of the video, tap ‘Block’ and select ‘Block this video’ or ‘Block this

channel’ to block the whole channel associated with the video

Tap ‘Block’ again, then enter the numbers you see written on the screen, or your custom passcode

To report content to YouTube that you think is inappropriate, use the ‘flagging function’: tap the flag icon

next to a video or comment and select your reason for flagging.

The app does have advertising, but YouTube says it restricts adverts that aren’t child-friendly.

What safety options are there on YouTube?

Turn on ‘restricted mode’

This hides videos that may contain inappropriate content. YouTube says that “no filter is 100% accurate, but it should help you avoid most inappropriate content”. To do this:

On the website: click on the icon in the top-right corner that represents your YouTube account; in the

drop-down menu look for ‘Restricted Mode’

In the app: tap Settings, then ‘Restricted Mode Filtering’, and turn it on

E-Safety Advice for Parents regarding You Tube Flagging inappropriate videos

If you think a video or a comment on a video is inappropriate, you can use the ‘flagging feature’ to prompt YouTube staff to check it and decide whether to block or restrict it: Tap or click the flag icon next to a video or comment and select the reason for flagging Flagged content is constantly reviewed to check for any violation of YouTube’s Community Guidelines.

How else can I help ensure my child’s safety online?

The tips below will help you to set rules for your child about accessing videos on the internet and their online behaviour, and support them to understand the risks and what to do if something happens. Try to have your child in the same room as you when they are using the internet, and discourage

them from using headphones

Chat to your child about what online videos might not be suitable for them to watch and share

Regularly check the history of videos they have watched online for anything inappropriate, or cre-

ate a playlist for them

Encourage your child to tell you if they see something they find worrying or nasty

If your child wants to share a video they have recorded, check they get permission from anyone

who features in it before they upload it

Tell your child not to give out any personal information or anything that can identify them, such as a

school uniform or street name

Regularly check comments made on your child’s videos. Talk to your child about how they could

receive nasty or negative comments from other people, and what they should do if this happens

If another YouTube user posts a video of your child or shares personal information without consent,

you can ask for this content to be removed by using YouTube’s privacy complaint process
