Mkango Resources Ltd. (TSX-V: MKA) is a Canadian mineral exploration and development company focused on rare earth elements and associated minerals in the Republic of Malawi. It holds a 100% interest in two exclusive prospecting licenses covering a combined area of 1,751 km² in southern Malawi.
The Company’s primary focus is the Songwe Hill Project, a near surface carbonatite hosted deposit. On November 22, 2012, Mkango Resources successfully filed a NI 43-101 Technical Report and Mineral Resource Estimate for the Songwe Hill Rare Earth Element (REE) Project; this represented a major milestone in the development of the project.

*NI 43-101 Technical Report and Mineral Resource Estimate for the Songwe Hill Rare Earth Project, Phalombe District, Republic of Malawi, authored by Scott Swinden, PhD, P.Geo and Michael Hall, Pr.Sci.Nat., MAusIMM, , available on www.sedar.com.
The company initiated a pre-feasibility study in 2013, underpinned by an extensive program of mineralogical studies and metallurgical test work. In July 2013, they announced a base case metallurgical flow sheet for the Songwe Hill Project, this resulted in the Mkango targeting the production of a high grade, heavy and critical rare earth enriched chemical concentrate.

RARE EARTH EXPLORATION
SONGWE HILL HIGHLIGHTS
Mine Development & Infrastructure
Favourable topography - located on a hill, not a laterite deposit
Broad zones of mineralisation - as opposed to a narrow vein or dyke deposit
Outcropping mineralisation - potential for open pit mining
Developing infrastructure - railhead in Blantyre, roads being paved to within circa 10km from project with gravel/dirt roads for the balance, power developments, access to water
Mineralogy & Processing
Targeting critical & heavy rare earth enriched product: Cerium depleted, high grade, mixed rare earth hydroxide (55% TREO
1, 18% HREO
2/TREO)
Favourable mineralogy - synchysite and apatite that is anomalously enriched in heavy rare earths
Good leach recoveries - overall rare earth recoveries are greater than 80% with recovery of critical rare earths (CREO)
3 to the leach solution
ranging from 86% to 93%
Low temperature leaching - high capital and energy intensive kilns will NOT be required
Low strength acid - enables the use of plastics or composite materials for tanks and pipework; will facilitate acid recycling using cheaper sulphuric acid
Short leach time - allows for a significant size reduction for the hydrometallurgical plant
Conventional technology - plant design will be largely comprised of tanks, pumps and filters
Modular plant - facilitates the potential for future expansions, the latter underpinned by significant resource base
1 TREO – total rare earth oxides including yttrium oxide, 2 HREO – heavy rare earth oxides including yttrium oxide, 3 CREO – critical rare earths comprising neodymium, europium, dysprosium, terbium, yttrium
RARE EARTH ELEMENTS
CRITICAL RARE EARTHS: Neodymium, praseodymium, europium,
dysprosium, terbium and yttrium are used in permanent
magnets and phosphors which feed into high growth sectors:
Consumer Electronics: including smartphones, tablets, flat screen and plasma TVs, MP3 players and computer hard drives
Clean Energy or “Green” Technology: including hybrid and electronic vehicles, wind turbines, energy efficient lighting
Defense, Health and Industrial Technology: such as lasers, camera lenses, x-ray machines, aerospace, MRI machines
~85% OF GROSS IN-SITU VALUE GEARED TO HIGH GROWTH SECTORS
Rare earths used in the magnet and phosphor sectors
