3. Chapter’s Current Activities
During the past year, our chapter invited several oral presentations and our members also took part
in several activities organized by other agencies. The details are listed below.
1) On 11thMay, our chapter members were invited to attend the workshop: Integrated Microwave
photonics technology workshop in Beijing, China. The student members from Tsinghua
University and Beijing University of Posts and Telecommunications have attended this
workshop. Several famous professors in this area, such as Prof. Jianping Yao from University
of Ottawa, Canada, Prof. Xiupu Zhang from Concordia University, Vice-Prof. Hongwei Chen
from Tsinghua University and so on, have given the high quality oral reports about the
development of integrated microwave photonics technology. Our chapter members discussed
some essential problems in our research areas with the professors during the workshop, which
have broadened our horizons.
2) On 17st October, associate Professor Kenneth K. Y. Wong from Hong Kong University was
invited by associate professor Sigang Yang from Tsinghua University to give us an oral report
named “Ultrafast Spectrum Observation Based on Parametric Spectro-Temporal Analyzer
(PASTA)”. Our chapter members were organized to attend the report. In his report, a real-time
spectrum analyzer called parametric spectro-temporal analyzer (PASTA) has been presented,
which is based on the time-lens focusing mechanism.
3) On 18th October, our chapter members attended the “PT/EXPO COMM China 2013” which
was the biggest conference and exhibition in China for communication industry. There were
hundreds of companies and research agencies all around the world took part in the exhibition.
It offered an excellent platform for us to learn about the recent development in
communication area. We also got to know the advanced equipment developed by those
companies.
4) On 15th November, Prof. William Shieh from Melbourne University was invited by Assistant
Prof. Hongwei Chen from Dept. EE of Tsinghua University, to give us a talk named “Optical
space-division multiplexing: System and subsystem perspective”. Our chapter members were
organized to attend the report. In this talk, Prof. William Shieh gave us their study on system
perspective of SDM systems such as number of modes and differential modal delay and the
enabling devices and subsystems for the SDM transmission were discussed. More important,
some review of the recent progress in this exciting field of SDM based optical
communications were given by him. This interesting topic had attracted many members in our
chapter to discuss with him.
5) On 14th November, the Asia Communications and Photonics Conference (ACP 2013)
supported by SPIE was held in Beijing, China. This is a general international conference
focusing on the optical and photonics. Some members from our chapter attended this
conference to give oral or poster presentation in this conference. This is a good chance for us
to communicate with the peers in our field, so our chapter had organized some members to
attend the conference. Two of our members have obtained the Best Paper Award of ACP 2013.
6) On 23rd
November, Prof. Javidi from University of Connecticut was invited by our Chapter
and some other Chapter to make seminar course about three-dimensional (3-D) imaging
systems. He addressed some of the limitations of 3D integral imaging systems, including
limited depth of field, the pseudoscopic-to-orthoscopic conversion, production of 3D images
with continuous relief, and the limited range of viewing angles of 3D imaging systems. The
student members in our chapter were organized to attend this seminar. Both the technical and
non-technical questions were discussed with Prof. Javidi, such as “How can we obtain the
research interest on the optics and photonics?” or “What should our officers do to help our
members in our chapter to improve?” and so on.
7) 30th November, the Doctoral Academic Forum of Dept. EE, Tsinghua University was held in
Rohm Building. Our chapter member Fangjian Xing and Hongchen Yu took part in the forum
and made their own reports about their researches. Hongchen Yu and Fangjian Xing won the
first class and third class scholarship of the forum, respectively.
