Mongolia’s Energy sector• Mongolian energy sector consists of five separate

energy systems such as Western energy system, Altai-Uliastai energy system, Central energy system, Eastern energy system and a Southgobi independent part . There are 8 coal-fired thermal power plants, 2 small scale hydropower plants -Durgun HPP, Taishir hydropower plant, Altai-Uliastai diesel generation stations and other renewable energy sources . Generated electricity from above mentioned power stations is transmitted to consumers by five 220 kV substations and 1400 km transmission line further more than 30 substations 110 kV, 4240 km transmission line , over 3300 substation 0.4-35 kV 25000 km transmission lines

Central energy system In 2011 year:

– Generated 4458 mln kWh electricity – Imported 200 mln kWh electricity ,– Exported 21.5 mln kWh electricity ,– Peak Load In Central region was 782 MW,– Supplied to costumers 3,485.6 mln kWh electricity .

Renewable energy development strategy and goal

The Government of Mongolia has given one of the highest development priority to increase in using renewable energy.

Mongolian Parliament approved Renewable Energy Law /2005/ National program for Renewable energy /2007/

Percentage of renewable energy source will be reached 20-25 % in 2020 as indicated in the National Program of Renewable energy approved by the Parliament of Mongolia.

In 2010, it was reached 4.25 %

Feasibility of The Shuren hydropower Plant on the river Selenge

• Water discharge 216-245 м3/sec • Crest length of dam 670-1200 м• Water head 40 м• Annual generation 600-1000 min kWh• Reservoir filling period 2 year• Shuren HPP will be located upper confluence with river

Orkhon and it will not cause reducing Selenge water discharge.

• Selenge is the biggest river of Mongolia which runs to waste through the border, has abundant water power resources and location advantages and so the priority should be given to hydropower.

Page 17: Ts . BAYARBAATAR Director of EA Mongolian Power-201 2 May. 201 2

Conclusions

• The unreliability of energy supply will affect on energy supply security , the national security of the country causing risk to be uneconomical , emergency

• Construction of hydropower plant on the biggest river of Mongolia will ensure energy supply security by reducing import electricity having own regulatory and standby capacity as base for supporting regime of intermittent source such as wind power stations.

• Construction of Shuren HPP on the river Selenge the percentage of renewable energy source will be reached up to 20-25 % as indicated in the National Program of Renewable approved by the Parliament of Mongolia.
