CCU - 1 NATIONAL SPORT WEEK This week is National School Sport Week and students at Cranbourne have been busy taking part in an array of sporting events. As a lead up to this year’s Day of Sport, students participated in sprint relay competitions during PDL on Monday through to Thursday and after school in tutor teams in the following events: Track athletics (4x400m and 4x100m) Rounders Softball Tennis and Basketball Any points earned go towards the final sporting scores, which will be announced after Day of Sport on Friday 19th July. The sports-packed week follows the field events held last Thursday, the 20th June, and students still have the Swimming Gala to look forward to on July 8th. Mr Kimber, PE teacher at Cranbourne, said, “National School Sport Week has gone really well with the majority of students taking part in some way. If they are not competing, then we have had students volunteering to run events or officiate. Without their help, the week would not have been such a success. “We have been very fortunate with the weather this week and this has tempted the staff to come out and support the students - they really appreciate that! Thank you to everyone who has contributed to making this activity week happen. Least of all to the CBEC sports organizing committee (the CBEC SOC is made up of Tom Greenland- Jones, Lydia Rayden, Emma Stewart, Toby Blackburn, Harry Emery and Verity Jackson) who assisted me in putting together the programme of activity and organising the events through the week.” For news on Day of Sport, including the final points results, keep an eye out for the sports section in this term’s News @ Cranbourne, which is due for release at the end of July. Students took part in National Schools Sports Week which included lots of student and staff engagement and great excitement in sprint relay races, basketball, football and rounders tournaments. In Modern Foreign Languages many students received certificates for the Language Perfect World Championships and we are delighted to share the news that Cranbourne came in the top 30 schools across the globe! Fantastically three students, Erin Kirk, Leon Cooke and Henry Whitby came in the top 2% and we are incredibly proud of them all. Finally after five years at Cranbourne, Year 11 said farewell in their Leavers assembly today. We look forward to seeing them at their leavers ball tonight and wish them all the success for their exam results in the summer. Betty Elkins

TRY SOMETHING NEW WEEK - JUNE 2013 CBEC has recently taken part in Try Something New Week, which gives students and staff the opportunity to explore alternative learning methods in the classroom. On this occasion teachers worked on delivering surprising starters and pleasing plenaries, which included an animal bingo competition which was played across the college. Each department was assigned different animals to mention or feature in their lessons.

Below are some of the comments made by the winners of the competition, who each received AFL (Assessment for L e a r n i n g ) g o o d i e s i n c l u d i n g AFL@Cranbourne stationery and also received additional AFL stamps. Well done to everyone who took part!

Kayleigh Louise Elsey The bingo was very good. It got me thinking and I was listening to every word the teachers said. Michael Duffield 8St I thought it was a very good way to make people listen more in class.

Ryan Doe 8WH It was fun to try and get the animal names out of the teachers secretly. Matthew Croucher 8Wh The bingo was fun and I really enjoyed it. Phoebe Blackburn 8RO The bingo was a really fun experience and I hope that we can do it again next year. Chloe Gifford 8Ro I think that the bingo was an interesting way to take part in TSNW and I hope we can do it again. Lauren Vankempen 7Ca I think it was a good way to make the students pay attention. Precious Ncube I think that bingo sheet was awesome and fun. I really enjoyed it. Katherine Witts I thought that it was a great idea and made lessons more fun. Brogan Temple-Nidd It was really fun and got everyone thinking. Other winners (not pictured) were Naji Mohideen, Savannah Anthony, Carrie-Anne James and Rachel Gatfield.

2013 LEAVERS

Year 11 students sat their final exams last week and have their leavers ball to look forward to today, Friday 28th June. Mr Crichton, Progress Manager for Year 11, has the following message for his students: As Year 11 reach the end of the exams it is a time to celebrate their five years at CBEC. We start with the leavers assembly on the 28th June and then follow it with the leavers ball at the Basingstoke Country Hotel in the evening. The leavers ball is, for me, one of the highlights of the year. All of the students make a massive effort to dress for the event and I am sure this year’s event will be a memorable occasion. This year for the first time students have qualified for the event by collecting stamps and I would like to congratulate all the students who achieved 700. We did have a large number of students go way beyond 700 stamps, so a special congratulations to them. Over the last five years I have enjoyed working with the year group. I have been kept very busy and had a great deal of fun. I am very proud to be associated with year 11 and have enjoyed being part of each and everyone’s development. I hope I have made a difference. As well as the joy of seeing a year group grow up and move on there is some sadness. I will miss working with the year group. I look forward to hearing from you all in the future and wish you the best in everything you do. I believe the most important thing you strive for is happiness and you only achieve this by being true to yourselves.

STUDENTS VISIT UNIVERSITY OF WINCHESTER

Last Tuesday 17 Year 8 students had the chance to visit The University of Winchester for a special Aim Higher taster day. The aim of the visit was to give students an insight into university life. They began with a tour of the

campus and had a chance to see the halls of residence. Some students were surprised by the size of the halls and in particular the students’ rooms - some of them wanted to move in there and then!

The CBEC students were then split into two sub-groups with one of the groups winning the quiz and beating King’s School Winchester in the final question. In the afternoon the students had the chance to attend a workshop on fiction writing and had to produce short stories. They were then surprised to learn that they were taking part in a dance workshop, where they could improvise dancing using a range of props. The activities highlighted the vast range of courses available in universities today. Mrs Crosby, who led the trip, was most impressed with the students who represented CBEC and she said “the behaviour was exemplary and the way the students conducted themselves made me feel very proud”.

Rosie Leslie from 8Ac said she particularly enjoyed the activities and liked seeing the student accommodation. She was also impressed with the enormous library for students to use.

TASTER DAYS

CBEC has continued to run taster days for local primary schools over the last few weeks. Recent visits from Chalk Ridge, Manor Field and St Johns have been very successful, with year 5 students thoroughly enjoying their day.

Students had the opportunity to take part in science, music and design and technology food classes. The students and visiting teachers reported that students had a great day and really enjoyed the sessions. CBEC students were on hand to help out with the visiting students and it was a good opportunity for visiting staff to see how their ex-students were getting on at CBEC.

If you are interested in sending your child to Cranbourne, you are welcome to visit the school for a tour. Please contact the school office for more information or alternatively, why not come along to our Open Evening, which will be held on Wednesday 25th September 2013, 6pm - 8.30pm.

PABULUM COMPETITION Year 7 student Aiden Jeffery has won the recent Pabulum Catering competition and received a One 4 All voucher as his prize.

Aiden won the competition after collecting stamps on his loyalty card. All students can take part and loyalty cards are now available for the next competition.
