Grades K-4 experienceda writing/ publishing work-shop with Steve, and to theirdelight had the opportunityto hear him read several ofhis books. Steve, who is asports writer for the Provi-dence “Journal” as well as achildren’s book author, alsofacilitated some mysteryscript writing with studentsin grades 5-8.

In just three days, thestudents created a wonder-ful, funny and mysteriousscript. Ideas and creativitywere flowing as Stevetaught students how towrite the script by describ-ing characters and their per-sonalities, creating aproblem, and creatingintrigue and suspicion.

One recent evening, chil-dren brought their parents toschool for a community-wide writing workshop.Here children of all agesenjoyed using their creativi-ty to develop a very funnystory — a mystery play thatfeatures 24 characters.

The play begins at a cos-tume party held in a man-sion. What will happen atthis party is a terrible crime,and the script unfolds toreveal the guilty party. Dur-ing the play some questions

are raised: Who is the cul-prit? Is it the famous plasticsurgeon? The actress? Is itthe limo driver, the lawyer,or the TV reporter?

Parents, students andfriends will find out theanswers to all their ques-tions during the students’Mystery Theater presenta-tion, taking place on theevening of Thursday, May 11during Barnard School’syearly “Young Authors” cel-ebration. The character withthe best costume will receive

the coveted prize called“The Green Tiger” — abejeweled statue worth mil-lions.

Everyone in attendanceenjoyed an opportunity toview many forms and stylesof art, ranging from tile andplate projects to tessella-tions, impressionistic stilllife and landscapes,Olympic faces, designs inwatercolors, quilting, andmuch more.
