Try 2
1. A saturated clay stratum 8 m thick is located between two thick sand layers. In addition to the thick
sand strata, there is a thin continuous sand layer (drainage layer) 2 m below the top of the clay
layer. Consolidation tests on undisturbed samples of the clay show it to have a coefficient of
consolidation, cv, of 5 X 10-2 mm2/sec. Application of uniform load at the ground surface will cause a
uniform increase in vertical stress throughout the clay layer.
a. Determine the number of days would be required to obtain one-half the ultimate
settlement.
b. How many days would be required to obtain one-half the ultimate settlement without the
thin drainage layer?
c. If the increase in stress is 50 kPa throughout the clay layer, determine the pore pressure
distribution in the clay for both drainage cases 175 days after adding the load.
