Operation

Page 3: Trx42 manual

- The transmitter has two joysticks and a toggle switch. The right joystick moves the mower in all directions while the left joystick starts and stops the engine. The toggle switch is for engaging and disengaging the cutting blades. Use slow gentle movements with the right joystick and avoid sudden full throttle movements keeping a finger on the joystick at all times. You do not want to "flick" the spring loaded joystick. - The transmitter has a green and red mark on the left joysitck. Red will stop the engine and green will start the engine. Avoid starting the engine while the engine is running by glancing down at your transmitter when starting and stopping your engine. You also want to have the blades disengaged (toggle down to disengage) while starting the engine. - When powering up the system, it is best to always power on the transmitter first and last when powering the system off so

Page 4: Trx42 manual

the transmitter will always be able to communicate with your mower. - The transmitter has "trim control" to make small adjustments to each joystick's "center". Example: If your mower is pulling to the right when driving straight, adjust the bottom trim control on the right joystick to the left until it drives straight. - The transmitter has "servo reversing". These are set and configured from the factory to operate your mower properly. If for some reason these are tampered with, you will need to set them so the mower does what you tell it to do. The top two switches on your transmitter relate to the movement control of your mower. - The transmitter is equipped with "channel mixing". This allows you to control movement with one joystick instead of "tank steer" with two joysticks. If you ever replace the transmitter, holding both joysticks down and out while turning the new transmitter on will activate channel mixing. It will give 3 beeps indicating channel mixing is enabled. - The key switch on your mower will power on your mower. Always remember to turn it off while not in use. Keep the key safe from unauthorized operators by keeping it in your transmitter case. - The throttle and choke control is a manual design. Half

Page 5: Trx42 manual

throttle when engaging your blades followed by full throttle for mowing is recommended. Choke the engine by pulling up on the throttle lever for fast easy starting and immediately turn off the choke when the engine starts. Make sure you are at a safe distance from the mower when engaging the cutting blades. - The deck height adjustment is a manual design allowing you to raise and lower the deck from 2-6 inches. Never raise or lower the deck while the engine is on and always shut the engine off before approaching your mower. Never run your mower without the deck's discharge cover in place. - The Transmissions have a neutral engagement lever on the front. To put the transmissions in neutral, pull the lever to the front and up to lock. This is a good feature to help prevent unauthorized operators from driving your mower and for manually pushing your mower.

Safety

Page 6: Trx42 manual

1) NEVER operate or allow someone to operate your mower under the influence of drugs or alcohol. 2) NEVER place your hands or feet near moving parts. Always allow the engine to cool before servicing. 3) NEVER approach your mower with the cutting blades engaged. Always disengage the blades before approaching the mower. 4) NEVER adjust the deck height adjustment while the engine is running. Hydrostatic transmissions can lunge forward if the mower is tugged on while the engine is running. 5) NEVER operate your mower out of range. Always be at a safe distance to observe the mower's surroundings. Be aware of any objects that may be on the ground before mowing. NEVER "test" the mower's 300 ft range of operation.

Page 7: Trx42 manual

6) NEVER allow children to operate your mower. It is not a toy. 7) NEVER operate your mower with the deck's discharge cover off. Flying debris can cause serious injury or death along with property damage. 8) ALWAYS make sure the batteries are charged before operation. A weak mower battery can cause the on-board electronics to have poor response characteristics. If the battery struggles to start the mower, STOP! It is too weak to safely operate the on-board electronics. 9) NEVER use a transmitter that has been dropped or may have been subject to water damage. If your transmitter tells your mower to do something, it WILL do it. Always know it is telling your mower to do what you tell it to do. 10) In the event a manual emergency shut-off is required and the transmitter is not responding, turn the key off to kill the engine. 11) In the event the electronics compartment is submerged or exposed to excessive amounts of water, do not "test" the mower to see if it works. Replace the electronic components that were exposed to water. 12) If servicing the cutting blades from underneath the mower, always remove the engine's spark plug first. It doesn't

Page 8: Trx42 manual

take much to start the engine by turning the blade. It best to remove the deck for easy blade servicing. Simply remove the 6 linkage pins and remove the belt from the PTO under the engine and the deck will easily slide out from the front of your mower. 13) When mowing steep slopes, use caution not to lose footing. When traveling from side to side, NEVER attempt a zero-turn maneuver on a steep slope. 14) When mowing steep slopes, NEVER keep the mower on one side for long periods at a time. While the engine is equipped with pressurized filtration, it is still better to alternate sides when slope mowing. 15) For slopes too steep to maintain control, and going down hill only is the only option, keep the spark plug side of the engine up and this should only be used for short periods and NEVER a continuous duty technique.

Service and Maintenance

Undercarriage tension adjustment: The tension on the tracks should have a 1/2" sag between front and rear rollers. To adjust the tension, move the roller axle out by turning the tension adjustment bolt and securing it with the locking nut to keep it in place. You want to maintain equal distance from the end of the adjustment rail and the tension block on both sides of the undercarriage. The chain adjustment works the same way and needs to be adjusted first. You want a slight 1/4" sag on one side of the chain. By tugging on the mower you can easliy remove slack from one side of the chain as a guide for proper tension. Undercarriage bushings: The bronze self impregnating bushings used on the undercarriage rollers need to be inspected / replaced once a year. They can ordered over the internet or picked up at a local bearing & supply house. Small: 1/2" I.D. x 3/4" O.D. x 1" flanged bronze bushing

Page 10: Trx42 manual

Large: 3/4" I.D. x 1" O.D. x 1" flanged bronze bushing The rubber tracks are aftermarket replacement tracks for a Toro Dingo mini excavator and can be ordered over the internet or from SummitMowers.com. Any of the parts made by Summit Lawn Mower Co. such as hubs and rollers can also be ordered from SummitMowers.com Chain and Sprockets The TRX-42 uses a #50 16T (shaft) 15T (Roller Sprocket) and a 5/8" ANSI Pitch Flex Chain available from McMaster Carr. Brush off any debris from the chains followed by lithium chain grease or WD-40 after each mowing is recommended. The TRX-42 uses a Gravely ZT-42 as a foundation sharing parts available from aftermarket suppliers (Rotary Parts & Supply) and original Gravely replacement parts can be used if you want OEM parts also available from Rotary. Refer to the Kawasaki owner's manual for regular service recommendations for the engine. When slope mowing on a regular basis, you will want to keep the engine oil topped off at all times and change the oil and filter every 10 hours.

Troubleshooting

1) Mower turns over but will not start. a) Turn the choke on by pulling up on the throttle lever and once the engine starts turn the choke off by pressing down. Start the engine with half throttle and move to full throttle for mowing. b) Check fuel level and spark plug. You can spray one mist of engine starting fluid on the air filter. c) Check engine shut off wires and relay to make sure the electronics is not trying to turn off the engine as you are attempting to start the engine. The relay should "tick" when giving the command to shut off or start. d) For other engine starting solutions, see the Kawasaki owner's manual. 2) The mower pulls to one side or tries to go by itself. a) Adjust the trim controls on the side and under the right joystick on the transmitter. b) Remove the control arm from the transmission servo, turn

Page 14: Trx42 manual

on transmitter and mower (do not start engine) and set trims to zero. Re-install control arms and make small adjustments to trim if needed. 3) The mower will not power on. 1) Make sure the 12V mower battery is charged and holding a charge by using a volt meter to test the battery. 2) Make sure the battery posts are not lose and the cables are firmly connected. 2) Test the BEC regulators using a volt meter to make sure they are delivering 4.8V DC to the receiver and 6V DC to the transmission servos. 3) Make sure all wires and connections coming from the electronics compartment are all in good shape. 4) I replaced the transmitter and now the mower does not obey my commands. a) You will need to configure the transmitter to the receiver. First, enable channel mixing by holding the two joysticks out and down before turning the transmitter on. The transmitter will sound 3 beeps indicating channel mixing is enabled. Next (with engine off) set the top two servo reversing switches on the bottom of your transmitter so forward moves the transmission arms up and reverse moves both down. Right should move the (United States) passenger side arm down and left should move it up and vise versa. 5) All functions on the transmitter work except for one a) Test the receiver by pulling the problem channel and try

Page 15: Trx42 manual

using another channel. If this "fixes" the problem, you will need to replace the receiver. b) Switch the devices on the problem channel to see if the device is bad. For example, if one of the transmission servos is unresponsive, switch channels 1 & 2 to determine if the servo needs to be replaced. *CAUTION* Remove the engine's spark plug wire before troubleshooting engine starting problems. c) If the engine will not try to start, and the above does not resolve the problem, test the engine's starter solenoid with a volt meter on the lead going to the engine starter. d) If the engine will not try to start, also test the corresponding relay for the engine start to hear it "tick" when giving the command to start. **Refer to the Kawasaki owner's manual for more engine related troubleshooting solutions.
