SaTH held its first ever Equality and Diversity stakeholder event yesterday.

Organised by Ruth Smith, Patient Experience Lead and supported by Judith Barnes, Kate Ballinger, Mary Beales and Ashleigh Jones, around 60 people attended from a range of local organisations and health partners to help SaTH shape services and ensure that we are working to meet the needs of patients and families with all protected characteristics.

Signalling an important change in the Trust’s approach to involving service users in Equality and Diversity, 10 staff from across SaTH made presentations about how they were supporting services users with Protected Characteristics in their services and then this was discussed at tables.

The services represented were Audiology, Gynaecology, Patient Access and Outpatients, Dementia, Paediatrics, Speech and Language Therapy and Catering, Workforce, Corporate, Maternity, Gynaecology, PALS and Complaints.

The day was supported by attendees Helen Jenkinson, Deputy Director of Nursing; Julia Clarke, Director of Corporate Governance; as well as the Trust’s Non-Executive Director lead for Equality and Diversity, Chris Weiner.

There was some learning required for future events and a couple of disappointments with the external venue, particularly for those who used hearing aids as the hearing loop did not work on the day and the microphone proved to be unreliable. In spite of this, the day was very successful with lots of constructive feedback to the Trust as well as recognition for the excellent work already being carried out.

To ensure transparency and learning, all the outputs from the day, and every comment and piece of feedback, will be published and this will form the foundation for the Trust’s Equality and Diversity Service Delivery Action plan.
