RECORD  NUMBER  OF  PARTICIPANTS  FOR  TRUST  CHILDREN’S  RESEARCH  HOSPITAL  MARATHON  

 DALLAS,  Texas-­‐  Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital  has  a  record  number  of  900  participants  in  their  annual  marathon.  The  race  will  start  at  the  American  Airline’s  Center  in  Dallas,  Texas  on  Sept.  16.    The  marathon  is  a  race  hosted  to  raise  money  for  new  additions  to  Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital.    Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital  has  hosted  the  event  for  nine  years.        “We  host  the  race  annually  to  raise  money  for  the  patients  and  also  as  a  fun  event  for  the  community,”  Sara  Fevurly,  communications  director  for  Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital,  said.  “The  money  raised  is  critical  to  our  survival  as  a  hospital.”    The  hospital  has  a  $1  million  goal  for  this  year’s  marathon.  The  race  organizers  anticipate  another  100  runners  will  register.  All  proceeds  will  be  used  to  build  a  cardiology  wing  of  the  hospital.      The  2012  featured  marathon  competitor  is  Megan  Horton,  a  heart  transplant  recipient  in  2005.  Horton  has  spent  more  than  a  year  training  to  compete  in  the  marathon.    “The  cardiology  wing  is  near  to  my  heart,”  Horton  said.  “I  want  to  do  anything  I  can  for  this  hospital  because  the  doctors  and  nurses  at  Trust  saved  my  life.”    Registration  for  runners  is  $100,  and  the  public  is  allowed  to  walk  the  5K  for  $25.    The  event  will  include  a  concert  and  a  playground  area  for  children.  Registration  will  close  on  Aug.  16.

area for registered competitors from around the world. The public is allowed to walk the course. The event is to celebrate the thousands of Trust Children’s Research Hospital patients who are unable to stand. The proceeds go to Trust Children’s Research Hospital.

Other events: The event is open to the public. There will be concerts along the

course route and a playground area for children. There will also be a market area with local vendors.

PEDIATRIC  HEART  TRANSPLANT  PATIENT  PLANS  TO  RUN  IN  MARATHON    DALLAS,  Texas-­‐  The  young  woman  laces  up  her  tennis  shoes  and  races  out  the  door  to  battle  the  cold  Oklahoma  weather  during  her  daily  run  at  5  a.m.  with  the  same  determination  as  any  other  marathon  competitor.    However,  for  runner  Megan  Horton,  18,  participating  in  a  marathon  represents  overcoming  an  additional  challenge.  Six  years  ago,  Horton  received  a  heart  transplant  from  Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital  in  Dallas,  Texas.    She  is  now  training  to  run  in  the  Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital  Marathon.        “Heart  transplant  patients  can  lead  normal  lives  and  can  go  on  to  do  extraordinary  things,”  Horton  said.  “Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital  has  given  me  a  second  chance,  and  I  want  to  compete  in  their  marathon  to  inspire  other  patients.”    In  2005,  Horton  received  a  heart  transplant  after  she  was  diagnosed  with  a  rare  pediatric  disease  that  ravaged  her  heart.  Horton  waited  three  days  on  the  national  waiting  list  for  a  heart.  Dr.  Mark  Smith,  a  pediatric  heart  surgeon  at  Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital,  completed  the  transplant  within  12  hours.      On  Sept.  16,  Horton  will  join  900  marathon  participants  running  to  raise  funds  for  the  Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital.  The  marathon  raised  $750,000  last  year.  With  the  funds,  the  hospital  was  able  to  build  a  cancer  wing  of  the  hospital.      “We  host  the  race  annually  to  raise  money  for  the  patients  and  also  as  a  fun  event  for  the  community,”  Sara  Fevurly,  communications  director  for  Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital,  said.  “The  money  raised  is  critical  to  our  survival  as  a  hospital.”    The  hospital  has  a  $1  million  goal  for  this  year’s  marathon.  The  race  has  900  participant  registered.  The  race  organizers  anticipate  another  100  runners  will  register.  All  proceeds  will  be  used  to  build  a  cardiology  wing  of  the  hospital.    “The  hospital  has  been  in  need  of  a  new  cardiology  wing  with  updated  technology  for  several  years,”  Fevurly  said.  “We  cannot  accomplish  this  important  goal  without  help  from  our  community.  We  hope  the  community  will  come  out  and  support  our  cause.”

Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital  Marathon  Members  Biographies    

Megan  Horton,  the  featured  marathon  competitor  for  2012,  is  a  first-­‐time  marathon  runner.  Horton  was  a  patient  at  Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital  in  2005.  She  was  a  heart  transplant  recipient  after  a  rare  virus  ravaged  her  heart.  Horton  has  been  training  for  more  than  a  year  to  compete  in  the  marathon.  Horton  has  “a  passion  for  heart  health  and  hopes  to  inspire  other  transplant  patients”,  she  said.  Horton  graduated  from  Westwood  High  School  in  Austin,  Texas.  Horton  is  a  sohpomore  at  Oklahoma  State  University,  and  she  is  studying  strategic  communication.  Horton  plans  to  attend  graduate  school  after  completing  her  undergraduate  degree.    

     Sara  Fevurly,  the  communications  director  for  Trust  Children’s  Research  Hospital,  considers  her  job  an  honor.  She  has  worked  at  the  hospital  for  nine  years  as  a  member  of  the  communications  department.  She  started  working  at  the  hospital  after  her  younger  sister,  Amanda,    was  a  patient.  Fevurly  fell  in  love  with  the  employees,  patients  and  mission  of  the  hospital.  “Helping  the  children  is  my  life  calling,”  she  said.  Fevurly  has  dedicated  her  life  to  fundraising  for  the  hospital  and  communicating  the  mission  of  the  hospital  to  the  public.  The  marathon  was  started  the  year  Fevurly  started  at  the  hospital.  Fevurly  is  a  graduate  of  Oklahoma  State  University  with  a  degree  in  strategic  communications  and  minors  in  entrepreneurship  and  marketing.  Fevurly  graduated  law  school  at  University  of  Kansas.    Fevurly  has  never  been  an  avid  runner,  but  she  is  proud  of  the  amount  of  money  and  success  the  marathon  has  provided  for  the  hospital  in  the  last  few  years.
