This Sunday, we celebrate two themes, which though distinct, are nonetheless relatedand intertwined. On Sunday morning, we celebrate Christ the King, which is the finalSunday on the Christian calendar. The following Sunday, November 29, begins thenew Christian year with the first Sunday of Advent. There are many Scriptures whichspeak of God as King, and in the New Testament, we see Jesus taking on the title ofking. However, Jesus’ idea of kingship is far different than that of any earthly king. We ’llexplore that concept on Sunday morning.

On Sunday evening, we will have a Thanksgiving service, whereby we will celebratethe many good gifts given by the King to those who serve him. I ’ve often wondered: ifyou don’t believe in God, then to whom (or what) do you give thanks on Thanksgiving? The earth, moon, and stars? Dead ancestors? I am thankful that we know the One towhom our thanks is due: the One who created, redeemed, and continues to sustain us!

We will have an ecumenical spirit at our Thanksgiving service, so I encourage every-one to bring a friend, neighbor, or relative. There will be a time of fellowship and re-freshments afterwards. The service begins in our Sanctuary at 7:00 pm.

At the end of the Thanksgiving weekend, we begin the season of Advent, and a newsermon series, LOVE Revealed. We will explore different ways Jesus brought the loveof God to earth in his coming. You will have opportunity to invite unchurched friends toworship, including Christmas Eve, using postcard invitations you can hand out. Thesewill be available on November 29, and we’ll make them available all through December. A sample of the front of the postcard is shown inside this Trumpet Call.

Starting the first week in December on Thursday, the 3rd, we will have a four session Advent Study on Thursday evenings, from 6:00 to 8:00 p.m. We begin with a simplemeal, then gather for a brief video, and then break into small groups for discussion. There are participant books which not only will help with the study but can guide your

    mas Eve: a children’s service at 4:00 p.m., a family service at 7:00 p.m., and a Com-

munion service at 10:00 p.m. All will feature candlelight (there will be LED electric

Finally, don’t forget our Mission Fair on Sunday, December 6, a day when we will begiven over completely to the missions our Faith Promise fund actively support. Thefollowing Saturday, December 12, we will host our annual Breakfast with St. Nicholasfor families. We have a $10,000 challenge between now and the end of the year toraise funds for Faith Promise and Imagine NO Malaria. I will soon be sharing in per-son how Karen and I are responding to this challenge to inspire generosity in all our

congregation. May God inspire a spirit of thanksgiving in all of us as we prepare togather with friends and family next Thursday. Let’s all be aware of people in our com-munity who are alone on Thanksgiving and find out what we can do to brighten theirholiday. I’m looking forward to seeing you on Sunday!

    Update

As People of the UnitedMethodist Church we be-lieve that being faithful toGod’s Kingdom work“includes more than per-sonal piety; love of God isalways linked with love of

neighbor, a passion for justice and renewal of life

of the world.”1 This belief becomes real in our commitment to Missions.Commitment for helping those in need today is an area with many, manypossibilities. It is hard to know which organization or individual to support.Who is most transparent with their funds? Who is most efficient? Who do Ireally want to help?

Out of the many possibilities, even in the area of Christian missions, FaithPromise, in faith and discernment, chooses several Mission projects eachyear. This year we give a small portion of an organization ’s budget to 12Partners who receive an amount from $1000 to $5000 each year. Thetotal Faith Promise is $30,000 this year. These Partners and their commit-ment to a particular group of vulnerable people give us the opportunity to

hear and see what is being done because of God ’s presence and love inthe world. We, as a congregation, would never be able to serve thesepeople in any significant way. Theirs is not a problem-free commitment.Rather, it is one that depends on God ’s guidance to deal with crises andsometimes life-threatening situations.

As mentioned above, it is not easy to choose who to support. Hopefully, though, you will take time on December 6th to learn about the 12 Partnerswhich ESUMC supports through voluntary giving of prayers, communica-tions and donations through Faith Promise.

A Missions Fair in Fellowship Hall, presence of Partner representatives atWorship Services, display of art work from Sunday School children, someethnic food prepared by Mary, and an invitation for you to post internation-

al photos for display to [email protected] are all part of theplans for December 6th. Fellowship Hall will be ready for you all morningto participate in the Missions Fair, including the Study Group time be-tween Services. Come with curiosity and questions to help ESUMC bethe sign of God’s presence in the world.

Evangelize!?? Me, preach the gospel? No way. I’m not equipped to do thatplus it makes me uncomfortable. YetJesus gave the Great Commission to gout to preach his Word and “make discples of all nations.” Matthew 23:19 “Offer hospitality to one another withougrumbling.” 1 Peter 4:9 (NIV)  – Okay, well that is more my style. I like to bakecookies and take them to new neigh-

bors maybe even help them to becomeacquainted with our neighborhood. Aninvitation to attend church could follow. And I am eager to show a visitor ourchurch buildings and talk to them aboutthe programs ESUMC offers. So we all have our own gifts to be usedby God to make ESUMC a more out-wardly focused church for our communty. And I believe that God is sending

ESUMC a message to practice invitational evangelism just as noted in theseexamples. Our church leaders are inviting us to join in this wonderful expe-rience so that we will use our individual talents to reach those in our community who need to hear the Good News that Jesus loves them.
