  • Safety LMS: “Demand the Best” In Tower Safety TrainingSafety LMS was founded by JP Jones to fill a gap in training for the industry. Safety LMS’mission is to provide training beyond the minimum regulations enforced in the industry,

bringing the best training to students, their companies, and the industry at large, ensuring customers have everythingthey need to run a safe business.

“JP has been in the industry for over 40 years, and his goal was to use that experience and knowledge to create thebest option for tower companies when it comes to safety training,” said Benjamin Bowman, Director of Sales andMarketing for Safety LMS. “We’ve always had a real-world approach regarding our curriculum. Due to the experiencethat all our trainers have, we can give our students an unparalleled view of the safety world.”

An example of this is their approach to rigging instruction for the Competent Rigger Course. The course wasdeveloped to give experienced tower technicians the understanding of rigging equipment, techniques and thecalculation of loads and forces created during the lifting sequences. Upon completion, workers can competently writeand perform Class 1, 2 & 3 rigging plans and complete the work of Class 4 plans under the supervision of a qualifiedengineer. Continue Reading

“It’s been a great day,” Schlekeway told Inside Towers. “We had over 75 members from 38 states fly in and they held132 meetings with Senators and their House Representatives.”

The agenda topics included workforce development, rural broadband expansion, creating more spectrum fordeployment and creating a stronger dialogue between the industry and Congress. Comments? Email Us.

Pai Wants Fresh Look at 5.9 GHzFCC Chairman Ajit Pai said Tuesday at the WiFi World Congress, the Commission will soon take another look at the5.9 GHz band. Twenty years ago, the Commission reallocated 75 megahertz of spectrum in this band for a servicecalled Dedicated Short Range Communications (DSRC). This technology was designed to allow car-to-carcommunications, including accident prevention.

But now, many in the automotive industry are now backing Cellular Vehicle to Everything (C-V2X). It would usestandard cellular protocols, such as 4G LTE, to provide direct communications between vehicles, between cars andinfrastructure like light poles, and between vehicles and others on the road, such as cyclists, pedestrians, and roadworkers. • The tower, part of a $10 million region-wide upgrade, will serve the East Hampton Town Police Department and otherlocal emergency response agencies plus improve overall coverage in the area.

The town is also seeking a new tower for its emergency communications equipment in Springs that would help closechronic gaps in communications between emergency dispatchers and responders. The town had been in discussionswith the Girl Scouts of Nassau County, which owns a 100-acre camp, to build a 150-foot tower; however, no plans areconfirmed.

In addition, the town is upgrading its existing telecommunications infrastructure and has already approved two newtower projects, reported 27East.com.

MassachusettsOfficials' “Hands Tied” As Small Cells Come To TownExtenet Systems, an AT&T affiliate, is slated to install two, 50-foot small cell light poles in the Belmont Center andlocal municipalities’ hands are tied in any attempt to limit the number, height or appearance of the infrastructure, reported the Belmontonian. In reference to the small cells, Selectman Adam Dash said, “They are monstrously tall.” He also pointed out thatheight cannot be challenged under the new FCC regulations, which were put in place last fall to make it easier fortelecom industries to install its equipment by easing local zoning regulations, limiting fees and streamlining the reviewprocess.

As a stop gap measure, town officials voted May 13 at a meeting for a package of “reasonable” restrictions that willpass federal muster, hoping to have some limiting language on the books, reported the Belmontonian. Some of therestrictions include prohibiting poles in historic districts, ensuring structures will not be within ten feet of a residence, matching a new pole to the color of existing ones, and prohibiting signage on poles.

“We have some level of urgency to get this passed and then come back and [deal] with this later,” said Dash, addinghe “wasn’t thrilled to having to do it quickly.”

  • Tribal Leaders Voice Broadband Needs for FirstNet Authority RoadmapIn a two-day meeting last week hosted by the Bureau of Indian Affairs, the Public Safety Advisory Committee’s(PSAC) Tribal Working Group (TWG) met with FirstNet officials in Nashville. The engagement was an opportunity forthe FirstNet Authority to hear from tribal leaders about their network needs, and highlight real-world FirstNet usecases in their communities.

The meeting included a presentation by Tim Zientek, Emergency Manager for the Citizen Potawatomi Nation, aboutthe tribe’s experience using a FirstNet dedicated deployable during its annual Firelake Fireflight Balloon festival inShawnee, Oklahoma. With over 40,000 visitors, the tribe relied on a FirstNet Satellite Cell on Light Truck (SatCOLT)and FirstNet Ready™ devices to cut through congested networks and communicate during the three-day event.Zientek remarked that the SatCOLT was deployed to Indian County and “did exactly what it said it was going todo.” Continue Reading

GeorgiaBroadband Reaches ClimaxDecatur County, Georgia has granted a variance that will bring new cell towers to Climax, and Fowlstown, reportsThe Post Searchlight. Local ordinances limit monopole heights to 120 feet, but an exception approved by the DecaturCounty Board of Commissioners will allow two new guyed towers to soar to 300 feet. Lightning rods will even add alittle extra height.

"We all generally have a cell phone, and 90 percent of 911 calls come from a cell phone now,” said Stephen O’Neil, the Bainbridge-Decatur County Planning Coordinator. “I would rather see one 300-foot tower to cover the area thatneeds to be covered as opposed to two or three or four 120-foot towers that do the same thing. Love them or hatethem, we all have cell phones and we all rely on them every day.”

SouthernLINC is slated to build the guyed towers, which will improve voice and data communications in the region.Extra space on the towers will be available for future carriers and their equipment. O'Neil pointed out that this shouldmake additional towers unnecessary since new providers would be able to co-locate on the Southern Company,SouthernLINC towers.
