Module 1: Overview of the Oil & Gas Industry

Module 2: Politics & Energy

Module 3: Access, Fiscal Regimes, & Exploration

Module 4: Developing Oil & Gas Projects

Module 5: Production of Oil & Gas

Module 6: Natural Gas & LNG

This industry is like many other businesses: it experiences volatile business challenges and involves complex processes. In this module, you will explore core characteristics of the industry as well as fundamental concepts and terminology associated with the business of Oil and Gas, including:

Scope and reach of the oil and gas industry Supply and demand of oil and gas The oil and gas industry value chain

The oil and gas industry is one of the world’s largest and most valuable industries. It can be the source of much of a country’s wealth and power. As a result, politics and oil and gas are closely linked. In this module, you will analyze the relationship between state politics and the global oil and gas industry, including:

Political realities concerning the oil and gas industry Stakeholders and their business goals National oil companies (NOC’s) and their relationship with integrated oil

companies (IOC’s) An overview of the Organization of the Petroleum Exporting Countries (OPEC)

Exploration and production companies (E&P) need to find oil and gas or they will cease to exist. These activities occur at the beginning of the value chain and are critical for E&P survival. In this module, you will examine the process of finding oil and gas, as well as securing the production rights, including:

An overview of the lifecycle of an oil and gas project How fiscal regimes and leases support getting access The exploration activities necessary to find commercial quantities of

oil and gas

Once access rights have been granted and exploration has discovered a viable field, development can begin. In this module, we will focus on development activities in the value chain’s upstream, including:

The phases of oil and gas development Fundamentals of financial analysis The significance of the final investment decision Major risks associated with development

When the development of an oil or gas project is completed, the project is put into production, which can be viewed as the manufacturing side of the upstream.

Oil and gas field projects may be in production for decades, therefore, a long-term focus is required. Since commodity prices will fluctuate outside the control of the producer, the emphasis on safety, reliability, and reduced costs over the life of the project are the goals for upstream production.

In this module, you will enhance your knowledge of production activities, including:

Understanding competitive advantage in the production phase Management issues in production Field investment and renewal Importance of operational safety

Natural gas is a valuable source of energy for a variety of applications. As with oil, natural gas is found in subterranean deposits and is valuable only if delivered to the market.

In this module, you will identify the various forms, production, and uses of natural gas and its role as an energy source, including:

The demand for natural gas in a variety of sectors Sources for natural gas that comprise the global supply Liquefied natural gas (LNG) and its global impact Transformative trends in the natural gas market

Module 9: Transportation

Module 11: Marketing & Petrochemicals

Transportation in the oil and gas industry can be viewed from two perspectives: production logistics and distribution logistics. In production logistics, each segment in the value chain has its own specific transportation requirements that enable execution of the segment’s strategic business objectives.

In distribution logistics, transportation services firms move crude oil and natural gas from upstream E&P operations to downstream refining and marketing (R&M) operations. Once completed, refined products are moved from R&M operations to end customers.

This module examines topics surrounding transportation, including:

The importance of logistics Technical dimensions of transportation associated with geography, safety,

and security Political and economic dimensions including eminent domain, rights of way, and

state profits Business dimensions including asset ownership, contracts, rate schedules,

and financing

The downstream marketing of refined products and petrochemicals is organized in two distinct sections.

The first section addresses the mix of petroleum products used by myriad industries and consumers with an emphasis on the transportation fuels that move products and people. In exploring the business of petroleum products, you’ll review topics such as:

The mix of refined product types produced by refineries How refined products are distributed Automotive fuel pricing and the impact of government taxation policies The impact of aviation fuel prices and airline industry challenges

The second section in this module provides an overview of the petrochemicals market, a rapidly changing segment of the global oil and gas industry. Products from crude oil and natural gas power our cars, heat our homes, pave our roads, propel our ships and aircraft, and are the base inputs for many products that we take for granted, such as plastic.

Topics in this module include:

The impact of the petrochemical industry on everyday life Competitive characteristics of commodity and specialty chemicals Industry structure and globalization

Module 8: Market for Crude Oil

Many activities—marketing, trading, and transportation—occur in the midstream of the oil and gas value chain. Crude oil prices are influenced by variables such as market participants, financial trading speculation, and world events. The changing nature of these variables and their interrelationship makes predicting oil prices difficult.

In this module, you will correlate the evolution of crude oil prices and how markets, supply, and demand influence crude oil prices, including:

Past and current crude oil pricing strategies Selling and buying oil in spot and futures markets The role of speculation Factors that influence supply and demand and the impact on price

Module 10: Business of Refining

Crude oil has no value until it has been refined, or transformed, into useable and desirable products, such as gasoline or motor oil. This module outlines this downstream section of the industry, including:

Refining products, processes, and complexity Global refining trends Refinery competitiveness, operational challenges, and profitability Comparison of integrated and independent refiners

Module 12: The Future of the Global Oil & Gas Industry

When the price of oil was over $100 a barrel, no one really questioned the future of the industry. It was profitable and promising for everyone. But that “promise” changed dramatically with the fall of prices in 2014. The forces upon the industry, coupled with changes within the global oil and gas industry itself, have raised many questions about the industry’s future.

There are at least two “futures” to consider: the future of the next five to ten years and the future of 2030 or 2040. In the immediate future, it is clear that oil and gas will remain a critical foundational source of energy and value.

This module identifies variables that may influence growth and innovation in the oil and gas industry for the foreseeable future, including:

Key factors that influence demand for and supply of oil and gas and the impact these could have on industry players Influence of industry institutions, such as governments, national oil

companies, integrated oil companies, and OPEC Preferences and concerns of societies associated with the impact on the oil

and gas industry
