The positive experience that Budget has had with their fleet of MAN Prime Movers has seen the three Melbourne Budget franchisees order eight new TGX Prime Movers – two of which have already been delivered.

The 6x4 models are a split between the 480 and 540hp variants and all feature MAN’s renowned 12 speed TipMatic transmission.

“Our existing MAN prime movers have proved excellent in terms of their suitability to the rental industry, reliability, comfort and popularity with our customers. This in turn gave us the confidence to look at acquiring some additional MAN models,” said Budget licensee, Phil Moloney.

In addition to these favorable points, the recent acquisition of the distribution rights of MAN in Australia by the US giant, Penske, also gave the Budget group additional confidence in the product moving forward. Not to be understated either, is the long term relationship that Budget has enjoyed with Dealer Principal Terry Jewson and the Patterson-Cheney/Westar group.

“The other benefit we have seen recently from our MAN Prime Movers are their excellent resale value,” Phil said.

The new trucks will be split between Phil’s franchise and the two other Melbourne Budget franchisee operations, Payne Investments and Wheelton Investments.

Super Gardens’ genesis started way back in 1989 by current Directors Andrew Grasby and Mark Stanbrook who initially commenced with domestic gardening maintenance before expanding into the commercial market of landscape construction and maintenance. In July 2001 Ian Griffiths merged his property maintenance business into Andrew and Mark’s business and Super Gardens was formed.

The company has achieved considerable growth during that period with an ever increasing client list of blue chip companies including Linfox Properties, Goodman International, and Southern Health Properties and some metropolitan councils.

Head office and a depot located in Mulgrave services the south east of Melbourne whilst another depot in Essendon Fields provides flexibility for the servicing of clients in the north west suburbs.

Super Gardens’ business involves two specific areas; commercial grounds maintenance and commercial landscape construction. On the construction side Super Gardens are the preferred supplier to a number of Melbourne Councils and regularly tender for work including parks, playgrounds and streetscapes in addition to performing numerous landscaping duties for corporate clients’ properties.

Director Ian Griffiths believes that the success of the company is largely attributable to a hands-on management structure and a commitment to building

long term relationships. The growth from twenty staff in 2001 to one hundred and fifteen as of today has been largely organic with much new business being generated through referrals and providing outstanding service.

Super Gardens’ first Isuzu was purchased in 1998 and they now operate a total of 20 Isuzus comprising a mixture of N & F Series with a variety of body styles to suit the diverse range of equipment and materials which need to be transported.

“It’s no co-incidence that we have ended up with an all Isuzu truck fleet,” Ian said. “They are very cost effective due to their low running costs. They’re also very easy and comfortable to drive – the elevation from the ground and overall vision is excellent,” Ian added.

“The other benefit of having a standardised fleet is that when our drivers transfer from one vehicle to another they immediately feel familiar due to the fact that all the trucks have similar switchgear, instrumentation, transmissions and

mirrors. From my perspective this is a big safety benefit,” Ian went on to say.

“Isuzu also offer an extensive range of different payloads so we can get the model that suits our needs exactly rather than us having to compromise,” said Ian.

“The other important aspect in relation to our sticking with Isuzu is, of course, the level of service we receive from Patterson Cheney. I’ve been dealing with them since 1998, first with Paul Leggerini and then Debra Hollingsworth and the service has just been great,” Ian said.

It comes as no surprise to learn that Ian still operates his first Isuzu – given the relatively low mileage and the fact that it is performing faultlessly he sees no need to change. He has also just purchased two new NPR 200s to cope with increased business and sees additional Isuzus being added to meet future expansion.

“Quite simply, the Isuzus are just a very reliable and cost effective vehicle for us – they suit our needs perfectly and I see no reason to change,” Ian added.

So it comes as no surprise to learn that Clearwater Logging, based in Colac Victoria, use a number of the mighty Stars to do the hard yards within their successful logging business. Owner Michael Fenn started Clearwater over 29 years ago with a single bulldozer. Today the company has grown exponentially, employing more than 100 staff and running a range of associated harvesting and transport equipment essential to the logging of forest timbers.

Clearwater Logging is involved with the harvesting and transportation of plantation pine and eucalypt from forests throughout Victoria. Once the trees are felled and stripped, the logs are loaded and transported to processing destinations in Colac, Geelong and Melbourne. The pine logs are processed and sorted for either local building materials or for export usage whilst the pulp wood is converted into wood chips for a variety of building and other uses.

The equipment Clearwater uses to undertake the work includes specialist harvesting machines and forwarders, coupled with excavators which are used to load the felled logs onto the trucks. Clearwater now has six Western Stars on their fleet – a mixture of short bonneted FS2 and long bonneted FXC models - the most recent one, a newly minted 4964FXC delivered in August this year.

All the Stars the company uses are day cab models in order to maximise load space on the trailers. Most are fitted with B-Double retractable logging skels.

With its 838mm bumper to steer axle and 2768mm bumper to back of cab dimensions, the 4800FS2 is the perfect choice to legally achieve maximum payload in logging-type B-Double applications. With mass management Clearwater’s B-Double trucks are certified to carry a full 68 tonnes.

“The Western Stars are tough, yet comfortable and their logging truck heritage makes them ideal for our business. The drivers really like the trucks, especially the roominess of the cab where they can store all their gear,” owner Mick commented.

“They have commented on the visibility window in the left-hand door which has proved useful in this kind of business where there are a lot of heavy duty vehicles moving about, not to mention logs!” Mick added.

“Another feature we all like is the general ease of entry and egress – from my point of view it is another critical workplace safety benefit,” Mick went on to say.

“We’ve dealt with Westar for all our Western Star purchases and are very happy with the service we have received in particular sales consultant James Leo. It’s a valuable relationship which should extend into the future,” Mick added.

As many readers may know, way back in 1967 Western Stars were originally designed and built to take on the tough duties of mountainous logging operations in the vast forests of Canada – where they continue to prove themselves day in, day out in some of the most arduous conditions imaginable.

Leon’s main activity is preparing the road surface prior to new asphalt being laid. He achieves this via a Bobcat fitted with a profiler which takes a layer of road surface off the top in preparation for the new asphalt being laid. His work for Councils takes him throughout metropolitan Melbourne and into key regional Victorian towns – quite simply wherever a road needs to be renewed or repaired you’ll find Leon there.

After a few years in business when it was time to purchase a new truck, Leon spent a lot of time conducting detailed research so he could decide which truck would be best for his business. “I knew I wanted a sleeper cab in my new truck and the other important things were general cab comfort and quietness – and this is where the MAN really excelled over the competition,” Leon said.

Leon dealt with sales consultant Johan Middag at Westar who he describes as ‘unreal.’ “Johan knows so much about the MAN product – what he doesn’t know about any MAN isn’t worth knowing! It made the decision-making that much easier for me – it was an absolute pleasure dealing with him,” said Leon.

Leon was initially looking at a TGS but the TGX was bigger and offered that little bit of extra room so he eventually purchased a TGX 26.480 6x4.

The tipper body and a trailer carrying the Bobcat, all necessary accessories and equipment allows Leon to operate as a fully resourced and self sufficient one man unit. He carries everything he needs to get the job done and cleaned up afterwards.

“And the 480hp engine gives me the grunt I need when the tipper is fully loaded and I’m pulling my trailer whilst the Durabrite wheels add another touch of class to the truck” enthused Leon.

“There are just so many little things about the cab that impressed me – the ergonomics are great, the quality of the materials used is very high, the sound system is superb and even when the engine is running its just dead quiet in the cab. Some of the other trucks I looked at were just so much noisier,” Leon said.

And after living with and using the 12 speed TipMatic transmission Leon is an absolute convert. “The TipMatic makes driving so easy and relaxing – I’ll never be going back to a manual,” Leon added with a chuckle.

The fuel economy provided by Leon’s truck also comes in for praise and further reinforces MAN’s reputation for outstanding fuel economy. “Even fully loaded and running around town in stop start traffic it never drops below 2.3km per litre. And on the freeway, I’ve had it sitting on 4kms per litre,” Leon went onto say.

Leon takes his MAN back to Westar for servicing which he finds both convenient and where the work is always completed to a high standard.

“Quite simply my MAN is awesome – I wouldn’t even consider another brand now,” Leon summed up.

Isuzu D-MAX continues to harness ‘The Spirit of Truck’ in its design and remains the only Ute produced by a commercial vehicle manufacturer. Over 4,000,000km of testing was conducted in the development of the latest D-MAX to ensure customers expectations’ were exceeded.

Since she started she literally hasn’t stopped and testament to the quality of her work is the fact that all the business she has received so far has been through word of mouth. The increase in work has seen Jess recently take on an apprentice to assist her.

Jess made do with a Holden VY initially, but due to the steady expansion of jobs a Ute with its additional carrying capacity, flexibility and increased towing ability was required.

Jess looked at a couple of Utes but it soon became apparent that D-Max was the

superior vehicle when everything was evaluated and weighed up.

“The D-MAX is great – especially for towing. I need to tow a range of equipment and machinery to undertake our jobs and D-MAX’s 3 tonne towing capacity makes this a breeze,” Jess said.

D-MAX’s well proven, fuel efficient 3.0 litre turbo common rail diesel engine generates 130kW and a peak torque output of 380Nm at 1800rpm. The torque is delivered across a flat curve through a large part of the rev-range to aid drivability and makes for relaxed towing.

“It’s also really spacious – there’s so much room in the front and back and it’s so

comfortable. I chose the Crew Cab model so I could use the vehicle for both work and play,” enthused Jess

“And the fuel economy from the diesel engine is just great – I’m saving about $50 a week on fuel alone,” she went on to say.

“I also had a good purchase experience at Patterson Cheney Isuzu Ute which is an important factor. I’m really pleased with my D-MAX, I just love it. In a word, it’s wicked!” concluded Jess.
