Teaching Sonseekers
Dear Teacher
Teaching young people about Gods Word is a great honour and privilege.
We note God chose Abraham, a man of faith because he would teach hischildren and his household after him, to know the Way of The Lord (Gen
18:19)
One who undertakes such a task will understand they have accepted a
responsibility to become a witness of Gods great love and faithfulness.
As an example of Christian faith and integrity they have a wonderful
opportunity to share their love for Gods Word. The tremendous blessing
for those who commit themselves to this task is that the Holy Spirit will
strengthen and equip you to shine as a light to your class.
Recent trends away from Sunday School structures towards child minding
activities have, we believe, been unfortunate as they fail to recognise theimpact and effect the message of Gods love through Christ has on young
people.
Children are the Churchs future. As such they are precious and well worth
any investment in quality resources and dedicated teachers.
The Sonseekers curriculum offers children Sunday School material that
gives them a sound background in Biblical events, people and places.
Secondly it offers a pastoral approach for the children to know God is able
to help them and change their lives.
Structurally, any program will operate effectively if those teaching are
faithful, zealous and committed to a team approach that might include:regular prayer and discussion in relation to curriculum issues,
student needs and upcoming events and presentations;
organisation and management of resources;
training and development needs of teaching staff.
Teaching Sunday School is a rich and rewarding task. May God bless and
guide you as you serve in this way.
Yours in Christ
The Sonseekers Team

What are the Sonseekers materials?
The Sonseekers Sunday School materials are a four year course of
128 Bible lessons. The lessons are written with the twin aims of
teaching the students an accurate chronology of Biblical events and
also drawing from each lesson pastoral points relevant to the age
and stage of each child. They are written at four levels to cover
from Prep to 12+ age groups. The 128 lessons are organised into
8 units, each of sixteen lessons. The table below indicates the
suitable age group for each level:
Sonseekers Student School
Level Age Level
Level One 4 - 5 Kindergarten, Prep
Level Two 6 - 7 Lower Primary
Level Three 8 - 10 Middle Primary
Level Four 11 12+ Upper Primary
The Sonseekers materials comprise two related elements:
Teacher Resource including lesson plans & activity masters
which can be photocopied;Student Handbooks including homework activities.
There is also a Bible timeline showing chronology of major events,
with the dates of the current units lessons highlighted, included in
each Teacher Resource.
Whats in my Sonseekers
Level One Teacher Resource?
Each Level One Teacher Resource contains sixteen lesson plans for
the relevant age of your students. Each lesson plan comprises:
the key thought or focus for the lesson;
a suggested way to introduce the lesson;
a summary of the relevant bible story;
a memory verse for the lesson, together with a suggested way
of teaching that verse;
an activity which can be used in the lesson;
a number of extra ideas involving fun, practical activities.
Note: The photocopy masters for each activity are included with
the lessons in this Teacher Resource book.

. . . teachers guide . . .How do I best use my Teacher Resource?
The art of serving as an effective Sunday School teacher is linked to the degree of diligence in preparing for
each lesson. The Sonseekers materials are only designed to assist the teacher in this process. They do not
take away from the teacher his or her responsibility to prayerfully consider the needs of the children in the
class and to seek Gods revelation and wisdom in presenting each Bible lesson. The following suggestions
are then made with regard to using this resource.
Prior to the lesson
Prayerfully read the Bible passage for the lesson. The reference is provided in the header on the rstpage of the lesson plan. All Scripture references are taken from the New King James Version (1983
edition).
Read through the lesson plan and decide which activities will be most appropriate for the students in
your class. Generally, aim for a variety of activities over a unit.
Think about how you will combine the various elements of your lesson. Refer to the suggested teaching
approach for ideas if necessary. Link the activity to the story so that the signicance of the activity is
clear to the students.
Prepare all activities thoroughly prior to the lesson. Rehearse any planned activity at home to make
sure:
that you know how to do it yourself;
that you have all the relevant materials in the quantities you will need; that you know the length of time that the children will need for the activity.
During the lesson
Review the memory verse from the previous lesson with the children. Also check on the completion of
the homework activity page.
Revise the previous lesson before going on to a new story. You may like to use the timeline to help you
do this.
Publishers note:
The publisher wishes to acknowledge the use of clip art from Coreldraw, Clickart, Bible View Clip Art by Pastoral
Computer Services and Logos Bible Clips.
The publisher gives permission for artwork masters to be photocopied for the use of the students in the Sonseekersclasses. However, no other part of this publication may be produced or transmitted in any form without permission in
writing from the publisher.

Palm SundayFocusFor the children to understand that on Jesus
last journey the people nally looked to Him
as their king.
Memory Verse
Jesus is Lord. (Philippians 2:11).
Lesson Introduction
Tell the story using a sand tray. Use the guressupplied on the Teaching Aid Sheets - cut them
out and back with cardboard for extra strength,
then attach paddle pop sticks or straws. Use
real leaves and pieces of material to make the
path Jesus travels on. For the part of the story
where the donkey comes in, use sound effects,
eg. cupped hands clapped together for the
sound of the donkeys hooves, and alternately
slapping the tops of the legs for the sound of
the disciples following (slowly for up hill and
quickly for going down hill), rubbing palms of
hands together for walking through long grass,
etc.
Story SummaryOn Jesus last journey to Jerusalem before1.
His death, He stopped on the way near
Bethphage and Bethany.
Jesus sent two disciples ahead with special2.
instructions to bring back a particular
donkey.
Jesus rode the donkey into Jerusalem.3.
Crowds gathered who cut palm branches4.
and laid them and their coats on the road.
They shouted praises.
Teaching Suggestion
Children sit in a circle. Using a ball, the rst child (with teacher)
says Jesus, and quickly passes it on to the next child who says
is, he/she quickly passes the ball on to the next child who says
Lord, passing the ball on and so forth, repeating the words, one
word each. Repeat the verse for as long as you like.
Extra IdeasObstacle course.1. Lay out course using large leaves, clothes
and material amongst obstacles. Children take turns to lead the
course. Sing as you go.Fringed palm fronds.2. Cut A4 green paper to wide oval shape,
fold in half. Draw lines for children to cut along. When cut,
open out leaf and tape straw stem for holding. Children wave
palm fronds and sing worship songs.
Group mural.3. Using long sheet of paper, draw road outline.
Children glue or tape leaves, material, owers, twigs, fringed
paper (grass), draw mountains, colour sky, countryside and
picture of Jesus on donkey.
Musical palm leaves.4. Music and large leaves, palm fronds
and old clothing. Play like musical chairs, or when music
stops, call out leaves or clothes to indicate item children
must stand on.
Pin Jesus on the donkey.5. Enlarge a picture of Jesus (sitting)
and donkey, or draw. Use blue tack on back of Jesus and
blindfold children.
Morning tea.6. Ice a slab cake with chocolate icing. Add mint
leaf lollies for the road. Add a crowd of jelly babies.

The last supper
and GethsemaneFocusFor the children to understand that Jesus was
totally obedient to His Heavenly Father.
Memory Verse
Not My will. (Luke 22:42).
Lesson IntroductionTo teach about walking in Gods way and
accepting what God has for us, present thelesson as a journey. You will need the Teaching
Aid Sheet and other visual aids, such as a
real bottle of perfume, etc. Place each of
the pictures and visual aids in separate bags
or large envelopes. Set the envelopes as far
apart in the teaching area as possible, but
connect them with a rope, string, etc. so that
by following the rope each part of the story
will be reached in sequence. Tell the part of
the story at the rst scene using the aids and
then let the children follow the rope (which
represents Gods plan) to the next part of the
story, etc. Talk about how Jesus might havebeen feeling about going on.
Story SummaryA woman poured a special perfumed oil1.
on Jesus head.
Judas Iscariot promised to betray Jesus to2.
the chief priests for money.
Jesus celebrated the Passover with His3.
disciples.
Jesus predicted Judas betrayal and Peters4.
denial.
In the garden of Gethsemane, Jesus prayed5.
but His disciples slept.
Judas arrived with a crowd and betrayed6.
Jesus.
Jesus was arrested and His disciples ed.7.
Peter denied Jesus.8.
Teaching Suggestion
Tell the children the memory verse and then tell them that when
you say those words again they must stand up and say the words
after you. Then proceed to say the wrong words, eg. All my
hair, not my head, both my feet, etc. Intersperse the correct verse
enough times for them to learn and remember it.
Extra IdeasRetell the story.1. Children retell story, following rope and
using pictures at each scene to remind them of story details.
Memory game.2. Re-use the real items (eg. perfume, bread, grape juice, silver coins, etc.) and a few pictures from the
story. Display items then remove one while childrens eyes are
closed. Children identify which is missing.
Playdough.3. Objects related to the story.
Scents.4. Perfumed essential oils, small bottles or jars,
unscented moisturiser (eg. sorbelene from supermarkets or
chemists), toothpicks for stirring, and an eye dropper. Children
make their own perfumed lotion by adding a few drops of
whichever scent they prefer. Use within class or as a gift.
Felt story.5. Use the Teaching Aid Sheets and back them with
sand paper. Use on felt or similar material. Allow the children
to help you tell the story.
Morning tea.6. Set up a long low table with cushions to lean on
and eat morning tea last supper style. Bread and grape juice.

Activity - Jumbled Jigsaws
Materials
1 of each 3 Activity Sheets per child, photocopied or mounted on cardboard.
Colouring pencils or crayons.Envelope or bag for each child to hold their jigsaw pieces.
Scissors.
Steps
Before Class
So that the jigsaw sets do not become mixed, put an identifying mark on the back of each picture in the set - at the
top, middle and bottom of the back. (There will be 15 pieces of jigsaw in each set - 5 pictures each of 3 pieces.)
For large classes only, cut each picture into 3 pieces on the dotted line.
In Class
Children colour the pictures while discussing with them, eg. What is Jesus doing in the picture in the garden?
Teacher cuts each picture into 3.
Demonstrate mixing up the pieces and then putting them back in the right order, using the activity to revise the
story, eg. Was Jesus on the donkey when the perfume was poured on Him? Children then play with their own
jigsaw pieces.

The crucifixionFocusFor the children to understand that Jesus
willingly died to save the world.
Memory Verse
Christ died for us. (Romans 5:8).
Lesson IntroductionFor this age group it is not necessary to dwell
on the gruesome details. Use a picture Bible totell the story.
Story SummaryJesus was taken to court and questioned1.
roughly.
He was sent to Pilate and Herod, and then2.
back again.
Pilate tried to release Jesus but the crowd3.
demanded Jesus death.
Simon of Cyrene carried the cross.4.
Jesus was placed alongside two thieves.5.He committed His spirit into the Fathers6.
hand and died.
Jesus body was placed in a tomb which7.
was sealed with a rock.
Teaching Suggestion
Use a ball. Teacher sits in centre of circle or line of children.
Encourage the children to say the words with you as you roll them
the ball. Rolling the ball on the word us is suggested. Child can
roll it back in the same manner.
Extra IdeasSewing cards.1. Draw outline of a cross on rm cardboard.
Punch holes approx. 15 mm apart along outline. Using large
blunt needles (bodkins) and wool or similar, children sew
around outline. Tie wool to needle and other end to outline.Sand tray.2. Revise the story using sand tray with boxes for the
courts of Pilate and Herod. Children can mound up the sand
for hills. Paddle pop sticks for crosses, and small box and at
stone for tomb.
Potato prints.3. 2 or 3 different paint colours, potatoes or foam
cut to cross shape and paper.
Morning tea.4. Ice arrowroot biscuits and pipe a cross in
different colour, or join dried fruit strips (from supermarket)
with icing in shape of cross (these need to lie at, provide
paper plates).

The resurrectionFocusFor the children to understand that Jesus died
but is now alive.
Memory Verse
He is risen! (Mark 16:6).
Lesson IntroductionLight a candle and watch it burn for a while.
Liken the candle to Jesus life and remind thechildren of the crucixion and His death. Blow
the candle out. Explain that although many of
Jesus followers had heard that He would rise
again, many did not really expect it. Try to re-
light the candle with the dead match. Explain
that Jesus really had died and only Gods
power could raise Him from the dead (re-light
the candle with a new match).
Story SummaryTwo women came to Jesus tomb but1.
found it empty. An angel told them that Jesus was not2.
there, He had risen.
The angel told them to run and tell the3.
disciples that Jesus was risen and would
meet them in Galilee.
As they ran to tell the disciples, Jesus met4.
them on the way and they worshipped
Him.
Teaching Suggestion
Children sit in circle with teacher. While seated, together say He
is. Then all stand and shout risen!. Repeat several times.
Extra IdeasDiscussion.1. Talk about who could have moved the stone from
the entrance to the tomb. If you are near a landscaped area
with some boulders, let the children feel how difcult it is to
move even a small boulder.
Wall hanging.2. Paste the nished activity onto cardboard, add
holes and some string/wool.Angel.3. Draw around one of the children lying down on large
piece of paper. Add wings and cut out. Children add glitter,
gold paper, alfoil, and other shiny material.
Egg hunt.4. Explain that Jesus raised is like new life and so too
is an egg that foretells new life. Have an Easter Egg hunt.
Coloured eggs.5. Paint, brushes, and hard boiled eggs.
Cubby tomb.6. Large cardboard box (eg. from retail large
appliance store) and circle cut for door, or blanket spread over
table. Set up linen wrappings inside. Tell story inside.
Lets pretend.7. Pretend to be - the women walking slowly
to the tomb, frightened at the sight of the angel, so excitedknowing that Jesus is alive and run as fast as you can to tell the
disciples, etc.
Resurrection Olympics.8. Try a slow race (children walking as
slowly as they can). Try gravestone pushing (give the children
something heavy to carry or push, a bucket of sand or box of
books not too heavy for them) between two markers. Try swift
racing (taking the news of Jesus resurrection to the disciples).

One to follow.
Memory Verse
Follow Me. (John 21:19).
Lesson IntroductionTalk briey with the children about what they
like to do for fun, or when they are feelingsad. Explain why Peter and the disciples
went shing, referring briey to the previous
lessons. Discuss what the children know of
shing and then tell the story using the pictures
supplied on the Teaching Aid Sheet. Cut
them out and back with sandpaper and use on
a annel board, or back with cardboard and
paddle pop stick and use as stick puppets.
Story SummaryOne night Peter and some disciples went1.
shing but caught nothing.Next morning, a man on the beach2.
suggested that they cast the net on the
right side of the boat.
The net was so full that they could not pull3.
it in.
Peter realised that the man must be Jesus4.
and jumped into the water and went to
shore.
Jesus had breakfast with Peter and the5.
disciples on the beach.
Jesus spoke to Peter and asked him three6.times if he loved Him and told Peter to
follow Him and take care of Gods people.
Teaching Suggestion
Children stand in line behind teacher. Teacher turns to child behind
and says the memory verse, then takes that childs hand and they
walk together down and around the line of children and back to the
head of the line. The teacher leaves the child and walks to the end
of the line. The child now at the head of the line then turns to the
next child and repeats the game until all children have had a turn
and the teacher is back at the head of the line.
Extra Ideas
Lets go fshing.1. Cut simple sh shapes from cardboard orheavy paper, up to 10 cm long. Place paper clip over mouth
end of each sh. Make rod from a stick and string or shing
line. Add magnet (horseshoe is best) to end of line. Place sh
in large plastic bowl and let children go shing.
Fish prints.2. Paint a real sh or sh mould with thick paint and
take prints.
Boats to make.3. Suggested materials for making boats, nets,
disciples, Jesus and sh, include:- small cardboard boxes,
polystyrene bits, small takeaway food containers, tooth picks,
paddle pop sticks, straws, pipe cleaners, wool, cardboard
rolls, small lids, paper, sticky tape, masking tape, strong glue,
scissors. Paper plates coloured blue in centre (water) andyellow (beach) around edge using crayons, to nish the scene.
Fish catching.4. Children are the sh and can wear scarves or
crepe paper streamers for ns and tails. Length of rope for
net is set in circle on oor. Children swim around to taped
music. When music stops children stop and those in the net are
caught and brought aboard the boat (or set area).
Lets pretend.5. Pretend to row; sh, catching nothing; pull
in heavy nets; jump in the water; run up the beach; warm
yourselves by the re.
Morning tea.6. Check that there are no seafood allergies and
have sh ngers, or cut sh shapes from bread or cheese slices.

Activity - Going Fishing for Fish Balloons
Materials
Lots of balloons with a couple of wrapped lollies or food treat in each.
Crepe paper streamers or permanent pen to draw on balloons.Sticky tape.
A large box, sheet or blanket for a pretend boat.
Fishing nets - use small bait nets with handles, mosquito net, sheet, large piece of netting or anything which could
be used to catch a sh balloon.
Bowl or small bucket.
Steps
Before Class
Blow up and tie the balloons.
Attach streamers to the balloons for ns and tails, or draw in these details with permanent pen.
In Class
Put the sh balloons on the oor (in a large open area is best).
At the other end of the room the children set out in the box boat on the oor, with the nets and row out to the sh
- done by either pushing the oor with their hands and moving the box along, or wriggling together and inching the
blanket forward. Encourage them not to fall off the boat!
The children rst throw their nets to the side where there are no sh then to where most of the sh are. They
capture the sh in their nets. As the sh are caught the children burst the balloons and put the lollies in a bucket.
Children row the boat back and share the lollies.

and turns around, children must stand still until teacher says
memory verse and children repeat it. Children may also take turns
to be the one to say wait and to say the verse for the others to
repeat.
Extra IdeasBlow painting.1. A4 sheet with head and shoulders of disciples
(stick gures ne) - 1 per child. Few drops thin red/yellowpaint above heads of disciples. Children use straws to blow
the paint into tongues of re. Practise blowing (not sucking)
through straws rst.
String painting.2. Large sheets of paper folded in half. On
right hand half draw disciples heads. Use lengths of string (40
cm) dipped in red/yellow thick paint arrange above disciples
heads, fold left side down. Holding paper rmly pull strings
out quickly, one at a time.
Collage.3. A4 sheet protector per child. Cut off folded edge and
bottom to create a two page book. On page 2 paste photocopy
of disciples from Teaching Aid Sheet (Post-Cross appearances
and Ascension). On page 1 sticky tape or glue strips of red/yellow cellophane or paper above heads of disciples.
Headbands.4. Cardboard strips with ame shaped section at
front. Children decorate ame with cellophane.
Languages.5. If you can, teach children a few words such
as hello in another language. Explain difference between

Peter and JohnFocusFor the children to understand that Jesus name
is special.
Memory Verse
Rise up and walk. (Acts 3:6).
Lesson IntroductionAsk if the children can remember what1.
they were like as babies. Perhaps showa photo of yourself as a baby and discuss
briey how we have changed. Show a
picture of Jesus and the disciples who had
been shermen and introduce the idea that
God changed them too.
Concentrating on Acts 3:1 - 4:22, use a2.
picture Bible, felt board or simple puppets
to tell the story. Some of the gures in
previous lessons could be used.
Story SummaryPeter and John went to the temple.1.
They healed a lame man in Jesus name2.
and many others became Christians.
Peter then preached about Jesus to the3.
people who gathered, but he and John
were put in prison overnight.
They refused the priests order not to4.
speak of Jesus but were let go.
Peter preached in many places and wrote5.
two letters to the Christians.
John was given a vision of Jesus and told6.
to write it down - The Revelation ofJesus Christ, the last book of the Bible.
Teaching Suggestion
Sing the song Silver and gold have I none if known, or play the
following game: Children sit in circle. Teacher stands in front of a
child with hands outstretched to child and says verse. Child stands
and teacher takes childs place in circle. Child then goes to another
child in the circle and repeats teachers action and verse. Continue
until all the children have had a turn.
Extra IdeasStory recall.1. Children act out story of lame man being healed.
Let them use their own words, but with lots of prompting.Use props of bandages, crutch or walking stick, sleeping bag,
empty purse, etc.
Lame man healed race.2. Starting position on pillow and
bandage or sock on one foot. Starting signal, rise up and
walk. Children remove sock and ... to Beautiful Gate, walk,
run, hop, jump, etc. Prizes of lolly or dried fruit wrapped in
gold paper.
Memory game.3. Have 5-10 objects from story and remove one
while childrens eyes closed. Children guess which is missing.
Finger puppets.4. Use the Activity Sheet from Lesson No. 118
(Post-Cross Appearances and Ascension) for the lame man,
Peter and John. Using index and middle ngers for the legs, lame man can be made to walk and leap.
Do this.5. Children take turns to move their split-pin man into
different positions. Other children try to make their man copy
it.
Concentration.6. Before class, draw or nd pictures of people
and their tools, eg. farmer/tractor, housewife/broom, lame man/
bed, sherman/net. Paste on cards. Turn face down. Children
take turns to nd pairs.

Peter and
the GentilesFocusFor the children to know that Jesus has no
favourites and we are all special to Him.
He is Lord of all. (Acts 10:36).
Memory Verse
He is Lord of all. (Acts 10:36).
Lesson Introduction
Ask the children to think about ways that1.Jesus makes a difference in their lives.
Discuss. After the story, ask the children
to tell you how Jesus made a difference in
the lives of the people in the story.
Use pictures or annelgraph to help tell2.
the story. Use a tablecloth and some
plastic animals to illustrate Peters vision.
Story SummaryPeter went to many towns, preaching and1.
healing the sick. Listen to the excitingthings that happened to Peter.
Peter found a man who had been unable2.
to walk for eight years. He said to him
Jesus Christ heals you. The man was
made better immediately.
A kind lady called Dorcas died. She had3.
believed in Jesus and her friends sent
for Peter. Peter prayed for Dorcas and
immediately she came alive.
God told Peter that He wanted His good4.
news shared with all kinds of people by
showing him a vision. God had spokento a man called Cornelius and told him to
send for Peter. Cornelius was not a Jew
like Peter, but a Gentile. When Peter told
them about Jesus, the Holy Spirit came
upon them and they praised God.
Some time later, King Herod put Peter in5.
prison. He was chained and guarded, but
an angel came to Peter. His chains fell off
and the angel led him out. Peter went to
his friends who were all praying for him.
They were amazed and glad to see him.
Peter told them to go and tell the otherdisciples what God had done.
Teaching Suggestion
Have four children hold the corners of a bed sheet and seat the
remaining children under it.
The sheet is raised like parachute silk as the children all call
out the memory verse.
The children take turns until all have sat under or held a corner
of the sheet.
Extra IdeasDraw Peters vision.1. Pencils, felt pens, crayons etc and large
sheets of paper.Free play2. - using plastic toy animals for the vision.
Role play.3. Talk about the differences Jesus made in the lives
of the people whom Peter met and role play one of the healing
stories. Remind the children about how happy they and their
friends would be if they were healed.
Sing a song of thanks to Jesus4. - maybe Thank-you, Thank-
you Jesus, or Silver and gold have I none. The children can
walk and leap as they sing the song.
Dorcas garments.5. On an A4 sheet of paper, draw a post either
side and a line joining them at the top (clothes line). Cut out
simple garment shapes (t-shirts and shorts, etc) from coloured
paper, wrapping paper or material. In class, the children hang
(paste) the garments along the clothes line. Write at the top
Dorcas made all of these.
Animal prints.6. You will need plastic animal shapes suitable
for this, paper trays with a layer of 1cm thick foam and thick
paint poured over, and paper. In class, the children press the
animal shapes onto the foam then onto their paper.
Animal stencils.7. You will need paper, paint and brushes,
simple animal stencils cut from cardboard or ice-cream carton
lids, and Blu-tack. In class, the children use the Blu-tack to
secure the stencils on their paper then gently paint over the
edges of the stencils. Remove the stencils and Blu-tack to see
the animals.
Morning tea with a variety of food8. - if possible animal-
shaped biscuits and cheese slices - all set out on a tablecloth to
represent the sheet that appeared to Peter.

Prepare material squares - size of a large handkerchief.
In Class
Children model the animals Peter saw in his vision. Remind the children of the types of animals he saw - four
footed animals, wild beasts, creeping things, birds.
As the children do this, the teacher can tie a knot in each corner of their handkerchiefs and explain the meaning of
the vision. The children put their models into their handkerchiefs and role play the vision.
Children take their models and handkerchiefs home. Remind the children to explain the vision to their family.

StephenFocusFor the children to understand that we too can
be brave for God if we are full of faith and
trusting in Him.
Memory Verse
Love your enemies. (Luke 6:27).
Lesson Introduction
Discuss how difcult it is sometimes to1. love and forgive those who hurt us in
some way - such as teasing, not sharing,
telling lies about us.
Jesus says that we must love and pray for2.
those people even though they hurt us.
This is how we can show them that Jesus
loves them.
Story SummaryStephen was wise and lled with the Holy1.
Spirit.
He was chosen to help out, so that the2.
apostles could spend their time teaching.
Stephens enemies told lies about him3.
and took him to court. When the council
looked at him they thought he had a face
like an angel.
He spoke to them about how God had4.
used faithful men like Abraham, Jacob,
Joseph and Moses to guide Israel.
He reminded them how often they had5.
refused to listen to Gods messengers and
that they had killed Gods Son, Jesus. The people became angry with Stephen,6.
dragged him out of the city.
They threw stones at him until he died, but7.
before he died, Stephen asked the Lord to
forgive these people.
Teaching Suggestion
Use a hoop, chalk, piece of string, or cardboard etc to make a
large circle on the oor. Children stand around the circle then
take three giant steps backwards. They should now be facing
the circle but a short distance away.
Have a small pebble/stone/marble for each child. Each child
tries to rolltheir stone into the marked circle. If it reaches the
circle they recite the memory verse and sit down.
If the stone misses, they have another go from where it landed
until it is in.
Repeat until all children have had a turn.
Extra IdeasMake a face like an angel.1. Before class, cut the centre out
of paper plates (one for each child) and attach a paddlepop
stick to the bottom of each. The children can then decorate
the rim of the plate with glitter, stars, alfoil. Hold over face to
produce their very own angel face.
Prayer and sharing time.2. Pray for others and maybe for the
things we are afraid of, and share about Gods faithfulness and
the good things He has done for us.
Cooking to share.3. Use a simple recipe like chocolate crackles
or honey bubble slice, etc. Set up the ingredients and utensils.Encourage the children to help as much as possible. Have
take-away containers or paper plates for the children to take
some home. Suggest they share the cooking with their family
and friends like Stephen would have.
Morning tea.4. Stephen shared the food among the poor. This
wasnt always easy. Have some food (crackers, fruit, dried
fruit) which the children could take turns sharing evenly
among the class. Help them to count as they share so that
everyone has the same. Up to ve pieces only.

Large sheets of paper.
Old shirts for the children to wear.
Steps
Cover the tables or oor with plastic or newspaper.
Put an old shirt or apron on each child to protect their clothes.
Allow the children to express themselves freely through their painting.
Suggest that they paint a picture of Stephen with a face like an angel but if they wish to paint another part of the
story, thats okay.
Encourage the children to talk about their painting. They might like the teacher to write a short sentence about the
story.
The teacher could write the memory verse at top of each childs painting.

PhilipFocusFor the children to understand that they can
show Gods love to others.
Memory Verse
Philip ... preached Jesus. (Acts 8:35).
Lesson IntroductionDiscuss with the children how they can1.
share Jesus love with their friends andfamily eg. by doing kind things for others,
especially if they may be hurt, sad or
lonely.
Use pictures to help to tell the story if2.
possible, or a annelgraph.
Story SummaryAn angel sent Philip on a wonderful1.
mission.
He sent Philip to meet an Ethiopian (from2.
Africa) in the desert. The Ethiopian was returning home in his3.
chariot after worshipping in Jerusalem.
He was reading a part of the Old4.
Testament - the book of Isaiah - but he did
not understand what he was reading.
Philip shared the good news about Jesus5.
with him and the Ethiopian became a
believer.
Philip baptised the Ethiopian and was then6.
taken by the Lord to another town some
way away.
Philip continued to preach the good news7.
of Jesus in all the cities he passed through.
Teaching Suggestion
With children sitting in a circle have a chat about Jesus. Ask
the children to suggest anything that they know about Jesus,
eg. He loves us, He is Gods Son, He died for us, He rose
again, etc. Dont spend too much time on this.
The children chant Who preached Jesus to the Ethiopian
(as per the childrens game of Who stole the cookie from
the cookie jar?) and the teacher points to a child who then
stands. The children then chant Philip preached Jesus to the
Ethiopian and the child standing says something he/she knows
about Jesus. It doesnt matter if the children copy each other.Repeat until all the children have had a turn at being Philip.
Extra IdeasBlindfold game.1. With the children in pairs, each child has a
turn at being blindfolded (the Ethiopian was blind to the word
of God until he was helped by Philip), while the other child
leads them around the room.
Role play the story.2. Use a large cardboard box for the chariot
and add paper plates for the wheels and have a blue sheet or
cardboard nearby for the water.
Finger puppets.3. The children can colour and use the nger
puppets from the Extra Ideas Activity Sheet to retell the story.
Before class: Cut out the pictures and paste onto card. Cut out
holes for ngers. In class: the children colour and play with
the puppets.
Chariots.4. Make these from cardboard boxes, lids or cardboard
circles attached with split pins for wheels. Add 2 strips of
cardboard attached to the sides to pull it along. If your chariots
are highly maneuverable, have chariot races.
Fast Philip.5. Use the nger puppet of Philip from the Extra
Ideas Activity Sheet and a table. Line 2 children up on either
side of the table. They use their ngers as Philips legs to run
to the other end of the table. The winner can then leap his way
back up the table.
Morning tea.6. Make chariot biscuits from Sao biscuits spread
with vegemite and a circle of cheese or carrot ring for a wheel.

Pauls conversionFocusFor the children to understand that if we ask
the Lord He will show us His way for our
lives.
Memory Verse
Open their eyes. (Acts 26:18).
Lesson Introduction
Use a annelgraph with two gures, Paul1. and Ananias, a picture of bright light and
a small wicker basket. Or use two dolls to
represent Paul and Ananias and a torch for
the bright light which shone upon Paul.
Discuss with the children how sometimes2.
we think we are doing the right thing but
people who know better, such as Mum and
Dad, tell us that we are wrong. Tell the
children that todays story is about a man
who thought he was doing right, but Jesus
had to show him that he was wrong.
Talk about how it might feel to be blind3.
suddenly. Ask the children to close theireyes, pretend to be blind and perform
simple tasks such as, touch your nose,
stand up, turn around, walk three steps.
Story SummarySaul, who was later called Paul, hated1.
Christians and always tried to stop them
talking about Jesus.
He was on his way to Damascus to put2.
Christians in prison when a great light
from heaven shone around him and Saulfell to the ground blinded.
Jesus told Saul to go to Damascus and3.
wait. Sauls friends led him to the city
where he didnt eat or drink for three days.
Jesus sent a disciple called Ananias to4.
Saul to restore his sight. Ananias was
afraid at rst because he knew how evil
Saul had been to the Christians, but he
obeyed Jesus and laid his hands on Saul.
Immediately Saul could seen again.
Saul spoke about Jesus and the Jews5.
became angry and decided to kill him.
His new friends helped him to escape bylowering him in a large basket over the
wall of the city.
Teaching Suggestion
Have the children sit in a line with their eyes closed. One child
is called out (he/she could say What do you want me to do?)
and is given a ball to gently roll towards the children. At the
same time he/she calls out open their eyes.
The children all open their eyes to see who will receive the
ball. The receiver changes places with the ball roller and the
action is repeated until all children have had a turn at rolling
the ball.
Extra IdeasBuild a wall.1. Small and large boxes to build a wall. Attach
string to a small cane basket. Place a doll inside the basket and
the children can take turns at lowering it over the wall.
Torch patterns.2. Have children take turns at shining a torch
onto a large sheet of paper or cardboard. The other children
can each have a turn at drawing around the spot of light. Swap
torch holder, and repeat until all children have had a turn at
holding the torch and lots of circles are now on the sheets of
paper. Colour and decorate with glitter, or paper collage.
Blind mans bluff.3. One child wears blindfold. Other children
spread out. Once they have found a space, they must not move
their feet (they may move upper body). The blindfolded child
then moves around - he must try to nd a child and guess who
it is. The found child is then blindfolded and the game starts
again until all children have had a turn at being blindfolded.
Role play the story.4.
Play a version of Pin the Tail on the Donkey.5. Draw three
doors on a sheet of paper - mark an X on one. Draw a gure of
Saul, one per child, and attach sticky tape or blue tack to back.
Blindfold children in turn - see if they can put Saul on the door
with an X.
Rock wall painting.6. Have thick paint on thin foam sitting in
a tray. The children use ends of match boxes or small square/rectangular objects to press into the paint and then onto paper.
Build up a wall with the block prints. Add a simple basket
shape and person from paper or cardboard plus some string or
wool for lowering it over the wall.
Morning tea.7. Allow the children 3 (small) morning tea items
to reinforce the fact that Paul fasted for 3 days before he
received his sight.

as suggested in the activity. This could be
used for the next three lessons as well.
Story SummaryPaul and Barnabas were sent by the Holy1.
Spirit on a long journey to teach people
about Jesus. The Lord used Paul and
Barnabas for many signs and wonders.
They went on a boat to the town of2.
Paphos. They were invited to visit an
important man in the town who wanted to
hear the word of God. A magician tried to
stop them sharing about God, but the Lord
showed His power through Paul. Themagician was made blind for a time, and
the important man believed in Jesus.
Mostly people were glad to hear about3.
Jesus, but some people in one town were
angry and jealous after Paul had healed
a crippled man. They threw stones
at him until he was nearly dead. God
looked after Paul and with the help of the
believers he was soon on his way again.
On their way home, Paul and Barnabas4.
prayed and fasted with the believers in the
new churches. When they arrived home,
Paul and Barnabas told all their friendshow lots and lots of people had come to
know and believe in Jesus.
Teaching Suggestion
The children take turns at making a slowly moving path of light
on the oor using a torch. The torch holder repeats the memory
verse walk in the Spirit while the remaining children take turns at
walking on the light spot.
Extra IdeasRole play the story.1. Have the children pretend to get on a
donkey, into a boat, walk around the room, stopping them from
time to time to act out the various aspects of the story.
Draw a map2. of Pauls journey using paint, crayons, or feltpens.
Sand tray scene.3. Make plasticine or paper-mache mountains
and cardboard trees to add to the sand tray. (The sand tray
could be used for the next three lessons and more items added
by children each time).
Statues.4. Teacher stands at one end of the room with children
in a line at the other end of the room. The teacher faces the
wall and counts 1,2 slowly while the children move closer.
The teacher turns around and says, stand up. The children
stand very still. The rst child to touch the teacher without
moving when the teacher is looking takes the teachers place
and the game begins again.
Picture journey.5. You will need a rope, string or wool which
leads around the room or an outdoor area, plus some pictures
(simply drawn) of a few Eastern buildings. Place a picture at
various intervals along the rope. Begin the journey with the
children and walk along the rope, when you reach a picture
briey talk about what happened at that city, then go on.
Painting.6. Encourage the children to paint a picture of some
aspect of Pauls journey.
Walking races.7. Have a variety of walking races using
different distances, backwards, sideways, crawling, etc.
Morning tea.8. Have a variety of food available, and paper bagsfor the children to pack themselves a picnic lunch. After the
children have taken one of each type of food, pretend to go on
a journey (maybe outside). The story could be acted out in this
setting too.

Activity - Re-Enact the Sand Tray Journey
Materials
Large alfoil tray (purchased from supermarket).
Sand.Blue cellophane for the water.
Toy boat.
Figures to represent Paul, Barnabas, the important man, the magician, the lame man, the angry men.
Small stones.
Signposts with names of towns visited. (Teacher will need to check Bible references to establish these if all town
names are wanted - there are eight).
Steps
Allow the children to build up the necessary elements on the sand tray as the story progresses.
Make sure each child tells a segment of the story eg William, how did Paul and Barnabas get onto the island?
When William replies, allow him to place the blue cellophane around the island and the boat on top; and theytravelled on to Paphos (have a child place the sign post in position) to see an important man (another child places a
gure for the important man and then the magician, etc).
Encourage the children to remember the different aspects of the story.

Pauls second and third
missionary journeysFocusFor the children to understand that they can
completely trust God when difculties occur.
Memory Verse
I am with you. (Acts 18:10).
Lesson IntroductionIf desired, the sand tray could be used again,1.
pinpointing the most important parts of the
story. You will need some new signpostsand more blue cellophane paper for water.
Teacher will need to examine a Bible map of
Pauls journeys.
Impress upon the children how very difcult2.
it must have been for Paul to travel such
a long way. He was able to keep going,
sharing Gods word, because he trusted God
and was happy to even be hurt so that the
gospel could be shared with others.
Story Summary
Paul went on more journeys. He visited1. some churches from his last journey, then he
continued on with Silas and Timothy.
The Holy Spirit led them and kept them2.
from going where they shouldnt. The Holy
Spirit told them to go to Macedonia. Once
again, they told the people about Jesus.
A lady named Lydia and her household
believed and were baptised.
In Philippi they were beaten and thrown in3.
prison. The jailer was told to keep them
securely. He put them into the inner prison
and put their feet in stocks (teacher explain).
At midnight, Paul and Silas were prayingand singing hymns to God. Suddenly there
was an earthquake, the prison shook, all
the doors were opened and all the prisoners
chains were loosed. The jailer thought
everyone would have escaped but Paul and
Silas called to him that they were all still
there. The jailer and all his family became
Christians.
Paul travelled on to many towns. The Lord4.
spoke to him in the night by a vision: Do
not be afraid, but speak, and do not keep
silent; for I am with you. Paul continuedto speak boldly about Jesus and God looked
after him until he nally arrived back in
Jerusalem.
Teaching Suggestion
Children spread themselves around the room. Teacher
reaches around to tag the children. Once a child is tagged,
he/she is put into prison (make an enclosure with boxes or
chairs). The child is released when another child goes to
him/her and says the memory verse I am with you.
Continue the game until all the children have been tagged
and all have had a turn of saying the memory verse and
releasing the prisoner.
Extra IdeasSinging.1. Sing some praise songs of the childrens choice.
Footprint journey.2. Use large sheets of paper and felt
pens - have each child, in turn, stand on the paper while
another child or teacher draws around outside of their shoes.
Alternatively, the children may be able to work in pairs at
this activity. Children could colour and decorate their foot
prints. Write the memory verse on the bottom of the sheet of
paper.
Painting.3. For the very adventurous, the children could
remove shoes and socks and gently stand in water paint
and then onto sheets of butchers paper. Place sheets in
sun to dry. This activity would need to be done outside and
clean water and towel should be available to wash and dry
childrens feet.
Stocks.4. From long rectangular pieces of cardboard cut two
deep half circles for legs or arms to be placed in. Add a hole
to two pieces and a split-pin to join them at one corner, one
on top of the other so half circles meet.
Musical stocks.5. Play musical chairs, but when the children
sit down, have them stretch their legs and arms straight out as
if they are in stocks.
Cities.6. Have 3 or 4 cities or places where special things
happened, e.g. Philippi (Lydia and her household werebaptized), jail (the jailer believed), Corinth (the Lord spoke
to Paul, I am with you), and Troas (the man was healed).
Designate certain areas of the room for each place and
explain these to the children. Sing a chorus and then call out
one of the cities (places) and briey what happened there,
e.g. jail, where the jailer believed. The children run to the
area indicated. Continue with choruses and places.
Morning tea.7. Have a celebration picnic.

Activity - Paper Chains and Prison
Materials
Large empty cartons, fruit boxes, large cereal boxes, etc.
Strips of stiff paper or cardboard approx. 2 cm x 15 cm long - 10 per child.Staples/sticky tape.
Stickers, or glue and glitter.
Colouring pencils, felt pens.
Steps
At Home
Make sure you have sufcient boxes for all children to contribute to the building.
Cut the strips of paper (chains).
In Class
Allow the children to decorate their chains as they wish using the materials provided. When they have nished colouring and decorating their chains, teacher will need to loop together the strips of paper
to form chains. A stapler will be the quickest way of securing the interlocking loops. Make sure the sharp edge of
the staple is on the inside of each loop.
The children can then use the cartons to build a prison. They can take turns at being Paul and Silas (with their paper
chains around their legs), hiding in the prison and singing praises to God, or they could be the earthquake which
shakes the prison (not on top of the children inside the prison).

Pauls capture
and imprisonmentFocusFor the children to understand that walking in
the way of God is not always easy but Jesus will
always be there to encourage and strengthen them.
Memory Verse
The Lord stood by him. (Acts 23:11).
Lesson IntroductionTalk to the children about situations in their1.
lives which are hard, eg. friends not sharingtoys, not wanting to play with them, hitting
or kicking, nasty things said to them. How
do they feel and what do they do when these
things happen?
Remind them of Peter, Stephen, and Paul -2.
these men were lied about, hurt and jailed.
When awful things happened to them, they
did not run away, cry, or shout angrily, but
praised God and continued to share His
word? Ask the children to imagine how Paul
must have felt in not being allowed to go
back to his home for many years. Listen to
what Paul did.
Story SummaryPaul was in the temple in Jerusalem when1.
some Jews became upset with him. They
dragged him out of the temple to kill him.
The commander of the Roman Army rushed2.
over with his soldiers. The Jews stopped
beating Paul and the commander took Paul
away to question him. Before they went,
Paul told them about Jesus, but they got upset
again when he said that Jesus wanted to save
the Gentiles.Because he was a Roman citizen, Paul was3.
no longer bound with chains and he was able
to speak about Jesus to the priests and Jewish
council. There was soon an argument and
Paul was nearly hurt. The army commander
took him back to the barracks. The Lord
encouraged Paul to be of good cheer.
Pauls nephew heard about a plot to kill4.
him, so he was secretly taken to Caesarea,
accompanied by soldiers.
The high priest spoke against Paul, but the5.
governor, Felix, couldnt nd any thing thatPaul had done wrong. They kept Paul a
prisoner, but he still shared about Jesus to the
governor and king.
Teaching Suggestion
Have the children stand one behind the other in a line. The
child at the beginning of the line walks up and stands by the
child at the end of the line. The rst child then whispers The
Lord stood by him into the ear of the last child and they then
together walk to the front of the line and the last to receive the
message whispers it to the new child. All three then walk to
the end of the line and the last receiver passes the message on
again. Repeat until all children have had a turn at whispering
the memory verse.
Extra IdeasSongs.1. Paul told people everywhere how Jesus loves them.
Sing some songs eg. Jesus loves me, this I know, for the
Bible tells me so which could also be Jesus loves you
..., and Rejoice in the Lord always. Teacher could have
some simple musical instruments available for the children
to play - shakers (plastic bottle lled with rice), clapping
sticks, bunch of keys to shake, drum (ice cream container or
saucepan), spoons, washboard (corrugated cardboard with
stick).
Play time with playdough.2. Encourage the children to look
after each other as they share the cutters and moulds. Tellthem how Paul was always concerned for others.
Prison.3. You will need a box for each child, e.g. tissue
box or cereal box. Remove 1 large side of each box and
reinforce if necessary so that the boxes will stand on their
long ends. Either have the children draw Paul on the large
side left or cut out a simple Paul for them to glue. Add
narrow strips for prison bars. Other accessories may be
added, e.g. a small barred window, etc.
Roman commander.4. One child is chosen as the
commander and the rest of the children follow him
from one side of the room to the other. Periodically the
commander turns around and calls out stop and allmust stop momentarily. Give each child a turn at being
commander.
Food sharing.5. Bring out to the children just one item of
food (eg. apple, banana, Freddo Frog) and make a fuss
of the fact that you only have one item. Ask the children
for suggestions as to who should have it? Hopefully, they
will think for themselves to cut it up and share it between
them. Once the sharing up is accomplished, you could then
present quantities of food which needs distributing evenly.
Make sure each child has a turn to divide the food.

Scissors.
Paddlepop Sticks one per child.
Masking Tape.
Steps
Before Class
Cut around the components of the gure of Paul if necessary (depending on the ability of the class).
In Class
The children can colour the body and arms of Paul.
The children can cut around the drawing of Paul and his arms, on the dotted lines. Teacher may need to help.
Use masking tape to reinforce where the holes will be.
Teacher can then attach Pauls arms to his body using the split-pins. Attach the puppet to a paddlepop stick.
The children can act out elements of the story - raising Pauls arms as he speaks to the people or as he praises the
Lord.

Pauls final journeyFocusFor the children to understand that God has a
plan for their lives and when we are walking in
obedience to God, His plan will come to pass, no
matter what happens along the way.
Memory Verse
Do not be afraid. (Acts 27:24).
Lesson IntroductionSand tray. You will need extra water (blue1.
cellophane), some islands, new sign posts
for the towns of Sidon, Myra, Rome and the
islands of Crete and Malta. Have a second
boat as Paul and the prisoners had to change
ships along the way.
Stress to the children that nothing is2.
impossible for God and express amazement at
how God looked after Paul through shipwreck,
snakebite, etc.
Story SummaryPaul had to go to Rome to appeal to Caesar. A1.
centurion called Julius was in charge of himand, with other prisoners, they boarded a ship
to sail to Rome.
At Myra, they boarded a different ship to go to2.
Italy. Paul knew that it was a dangerous time
of year to sail and warned the centurion of the
danger. The centurion would not listen to Paul
and decided to sail on. The winds became
strong, the people were afraid and they had to
lighten the ship. Paul went without food for a
long time. Paul told everyone how an angel
of the Lord had stood by him and told him
not to be afraid. Although the ship would runaground on an island, they would all be saved.
They did hit a reef and the boat broke up.
Some swam to the land and others made their
way on boards and parts of the ship. The 276
people on board were all saved.
They were on the island of Malta. The natives3.
looked after them. A snake bit Paul but he
was not hurt and the natives thought he was
a god. Paul healed many sick people on the
island.
After three months they sailed in another ship4.
towards Rome. Once in Rome, Paul was
allowed to live by himself in his own rented
house where he preached the kingdom of God
to all who came to him.
Teaching Suggestion
Remind the children of the part of the story where the angel
of the Lord came to Paul and said Do not be afraid.
Sit the children down on the oor in a line. Have them
pretend that they are in a rollicking boat.
Call one of the children out to be the angel of the Lord.
This child can then call out the memory verse Do not be
afraid,.
Repeat the exercise until all children have had a turn at
being the angel.
Extra IdeasSand tray play.1. The children can re-enact the story with
small Lego gures and boats to move around the sand tray,
rocking their boat when the weather gets rough, toy snake
on the island of Malta, a little bed for the sick man. Make
sure all the children have a turn of moving the boat around.
Lets all go on the voyage.2. Teacher could have a small
suitcase and a variety of clothing and objects which some
of the children could pack. The remaining children could
be waiting at the end of their voyage with a celebration
picnic. Dont forget to thank God for His faithfulness in
looking after them all.
Box boats.3. Teacher will need to have several cardboard
cartons (eg. fruit boxes - one for each child) or one very
large cardboard box (such as washing machine or other
large appliance box - for all the children to t into) in which
the children can play. Act out the story - the children can
rock their boats as the weather gets rough, swim for the
island, be bitten by the snake, pray for Publius father, and
praise God with the believers in Rome. Add accessories to
the boats like an anchor made from cardboard and attached
to string.
Floating boats.4. Use polystyrene for the hull, a satay stickfor the mast, paper for the sail and ags, etc. If possible,
oat them in a large tub or baby bath. Recall aspects of the
story and the fact that Paul trusted in God through it all.
Throwing practice.5. The sailors had to throw much
overboard. Have the children stand on a low wall, chair or
table with a ball, bean bag or box and have a large box for
the children to throw into. Move the box to make it more
challenging.
Morning tea.6. Take a picnic morning tea, rugs, a few
sticks and red cellophane. Make a re from the sticks and
cellophane and sit around it to eat like Paul and the sailors
on Malta.

Activity - Build a Boat
Materials
Empty one litre juice cartons or milk cartons (plastic or cardboard) - one for each child.
Paddlepop sticks - two per boat.Sail shapes on cardboard - one for each child - size according to carton size used.
Scissors.
Masking tape.
Colouring pencils, crayons, or felt pens.
Glue and glitter/colourful paper pieces to collage sails.
Steps
Before Class
Teacher will need to draw onto cardboard a simple triangle or sail shape - one per child. Outline it clearly with
felt pen to make it easy for the children to cut out. Size will vary depending on the size of the carton used eg. a
matchbox will require very tiny sails.
Cut the bottom portion out of the cartons - this will be the boat, so have the sides deep enough for the children to
put gures into it.
Cut a slit in two sides of the carton - deep enough to take a paddlepop stick.
In Class
Children can cut out their sails. Teacher may need to help.
Children can place a paddlepop stick through the slits so it goes across the boat.
Allow the children to decorate their sails using colours or glue, glitter, or collage materials.
Teacher will then need to attach the sail to the second paddlepop stick with masking tape.
Teacher will then tape the mast and sail onto the cross-bearer stick which the children placed in earlier.
