The program is at once sacred, secular, folk and classical. Laments of Sephardic Jews mingle with Arab-Andalusian dances and Spanish court songs, while rhythmic cantigas, Hebrew cantillation and Gregorian chant meet the mystical world of Sufi poetry. Featuring instruments and musical ideas that blur the lines between Arabic and European, this entertaining and enlightening program is steeped in the rich history of the Abrahamic faiths — achieving a perfect balance of edgy improvisation, exotic vocal styles and ancient traditions. Founded in 1996 by Artistic Director Jordan Sramek, The Rose Ensemble reawakens the ancient with vocal music that stirs the emotions, challenges the mind, and lifts the spirit. The St. Paul, Minn. group tours internation- ally with repertoire spanning 1,000 years and 25 languages, including new research in Middle Eastern, European and American vocal traditions. We are fortunate to welcome the following faculty to our department this year:

Jason Duckles, visiting adjunct professor of cello and director of the University Chamber Orchestra, is replacing Hekun Wu, who resigned this spring to accept a prestigious job as a music director in China. An active soloist, chamber musician and conductor, Duckles is a member of the Amelia Piano Trio. The trio has performed at such prominent venues as Carnegie Hall and the Library of Congress, and has earned recognition from Strad Magazine and other critics for its outstanding “balance, tonal beauty and teamwork.”

Duckles was awarded top prize in both the Concert Artists Guild International Competition and the Munich ARD International Competition. As a conductor, he has previously held posts at Connecticut College, and is currently conductor of the Eugene Youth Symphony.

Duckles writes: “It is an honor to join the faculty this fall as conductor of the University Chamber Orchestra and cello teacher. I look forward to a fantastic year, inspiring and being inspired by the student and faculty. The long tradition of excellence and integrity at Willamette University drives a vibrant music department, and it is with eagerness that I strive to uphold these principles.”

Tyler Abbott, instructor of string bass, maintains an active per-formance schedule as an orchestral bassist, chamber musician, jazz bassist, clinician and soloist, performing throughout the region and nation with some of the finest musicians in both the classical and jazz music worlds.

Abbott’s current or recent orchestral affiliations include the Eugene Symphony, Oregon Symphony, Aspen Festival Orchestra, Oregon

Bach Festival, Spokane Symphony Orchestra, Oregon Festival of American Music’s “American Symphonia,” Eugene Opera Orchestra, Yakima Symphony Orchestra, Oregon Mozart Players, Salem Chamber Orchestra and several other professional orchestras throughout the region and country. As a chamber musician, he has performed with the Oregon String Quartet, Pacifica Trio and Beta Collide, among others.

Lars Campbell, instructor of trombone and low brass, is co-founder of the Portland Jazz Orchestra. He attended the University of Northern Colorado and Portland State University, where he received both undergraduate and masters degrees in jazz performance. Trained in both the jazz and classical repertoires, Campbell is a member of the innovative jazz trio, Chopslaughter, and the Bobby Torres Ensemble. He also performs with the Oregon Symphony and Oregon Ballet Theater orchestras.

His discography includes appearances on Pepé and the Bottle Blondes’ “Pambrosia,” Pink Martini’s “Hang on Little Tomato,” and Portland Jazz Orchestra’s “Good Morning, Geek.” Also a composer and arranger, he has written numerous works for a large jazz ensemble, trombone quartet and jazz sextet.

Originally from Staten Island, N.Y., clarinetist Louis DeMartino is a freelance performer in the Portland area, where he appears with the Northwest New Music Ensemble and Third Angle Ensemble. Recent performances include the Colorado Music Festival in Boulder, the Artosphere Music Festival in Fayetteville, Ark., and the New World Symphony in Miami Beach, Fla. DeMartino has performed with the Oregon, Boston, Houston, Kansas City and Omaha Symphonies, Houston Grand Opera, and was a member of the

Chicago Civic Orchestra. He has been a fellow with the Tanglewood Music Center, a member of the New Fromm Players and has spent three summers performing with the AIMS Orchestra in Graz, Austria. DeMartino holds degrees from the New England Conservatory and Rice University. Principal teachers include Craig Nordstrom and Michael Webster.

William Marsh, instructor of jazz guitar, replaces Mike Nord, who will be on sabbatical this fall. A guitarist, educator and composer based in Portland, Ore., Marsh received his bachelor of music degree in jazz studies from the University of Oregon in 2008. He tours with Cherry Poppin’ Daddies and Halie Loren — performing throughout North America, Europe, Australia, South Korea and Japan, as well as locally as a freelance guitarist.

A stylistically versatile musician, Marsh has collaborated with diverse artists — including Brian McWhorter (Beta Collide), Tatsuya Nakatani, Ron Miles and Mark Gould. He is a former co-owner and co-director of Harmony Roadhouse Music Studios, a private lesson school in Eugene, Ore. He maintains a private guitar studio in North Portland at the Falcon Art Community.

New Faculty in the Department of MusicNote from the ChairAs I celebrate the 30th an-niversary of my directorship of the Goudy Distinguished Artists Series, I have cause to reflect on my

32 years as a Willamette faculty member and the many changes within the music department. When I joined the faculty in 1982, we had a full-blown music therapy program and computers had barely been invented. Our entire program was housed in the Smith Fine Arts building. The little gallery behind Smith Auditorium was used for weekly student recitals and as a classroom for music history. We also had our own music library with a paper card catalogue. Responding to changing priorities in the college as a whole, the music therapy position was replaced with a scholar in music theory and history. Our music education professor brought exper-tise in technology and improvisation, and four years ago we were granted a position in jazz and improvisational studies. With the opening of the Mary Stuart Rogers Music Center in 1999 and these tremen-dous hires that followed, our curriculum expanded and strengthened.

Generous donors have enabled us to purchase and restore musical instruments and equipment as well as provide small scholarships for student summer study through the recently established David Ingram Memorial Fund. A significant bequest this summer from the estate of Barbara Gertson ’52, will allow us to endow a much-needed fund solely for instrument purchase and repair. It is our hope that additional donations will help the fund to grow. Gertson graduated with a BME degree in music. She taught in Aumsville, Newport and in the music department at Southern Oregon State College.

The range and quality of our performance offerings also continues to grow. Those of you who saw our production of “Carmen” last spring witnessed the magical synergy from the collaboration of our talented singers, superb chamber orchestra, and the lighting and stage design provided by the theatre department. Some of you danced your hearts out at Puttin’ on the Ritz or witnessed the artistry of many guest performers on the Goudy Distin-guished Artists Series, the Underground Jazz Series or New Music at Willamette. The adventures continue this season, so read all about them in the calendar here or on our website. Performances depend on the energy and attention of the audience, so your interest and continued support is important. Here’s to another season of music making!

There’s nothing like national recognition to confirm what we already know about the Willamette Singers! Those of you who heard our spirited vocal jazz ensemble at Puttin’ on the Ritz last spring will not be surprised to learn that Singers was selected from a large national pool to perform at the American Choral Directors Association (ACDA) National Convention in Dallas, Texas this March. This is Singers’ fourth invitation to perform at ACDA national conventions, confirming their place as one of the finest vocal jazz groups in the nation.

Performing in ensembles is all about community. This year we celebrate 30 years of choral singing under the direction of Wallace Long. Four hundred alumnae vocalists will return to campus on Nov. 3 to present a two-part gala event. A performance by Chamber Choir alumns in Hudson Hall will be followed by a dessert reception with a concert by Willamette Singers alumns in Goudy Commons.

The first chance to see and hear our 2012–13 choirs will be at the Family Weekend concerts. The focus will then shift to preparation for Christmas in Hudson Hall, perhaps the most exciting concerts of the year. Tickets for this sell-out event are required for entrance and go on sale in the music office Nov. 5.

Please reserve the choral concert dates on your calendars and be our guests for some wonderful music.

Three events this past spring were pivotal in the burgeoning jazz and improvised music program here at Willamette University.

In March, the Willamette Underground Trio — featuring faculty members Ryan Biesack, Mike Nord, and James Miley — traveled to Nepal to perform at the Sundance Festival, an open-air music festival held along the cliffs of the Bhote Kosi River, a few kilometers from the border with Tibet. Following the performance, the group worked with students at the Kathmandu Jazz Conservatory and recorded new music with several world-class Nepali classical musicians. We plan to have the recording edited and mixed this fall, so be on the lookout for new music from Willamette faculty soon.

Then, in late April, sophomore music majors Harris Long and Matt Sazima performed the first-ever qualifying recital for the new Bachelor of Music in Improvisation in Contemporary Practice degree. Both students artfully arranged and composed music for the program — in addition to featuring well-known jazz and Brazilian standards — with a core group of Willamette student musicians. If the quality of performances and enthusiastic response from the concertgoers is any indication, the future bodes well for jazz and improvised music here at Willamette University.

Last but not least, kudos to Wallace Long and the Willamette Singers on their invitation to perform at the national ACDA conference this coming spring. Things are looking great for jazz at Willamette. We hope you can join us at our many performances on campus and off this year.

Senior music composition major, Barbie Noyes spent the fall of her junior year in Paris where she took classes in music composition, literature and analysis, and piano at the Sorbonne.

Eager to return for musical immersion in her favorite city — outside Salem, of course — a grant from the David Ingram Memorial Fund for Excellence in Music, enabled Noyes to spend the month of June at Institut de Recherche et Coordination Acoustique/Musique (IR-CAM) as part of the Paris Contemporary Music Creation and Critique program, a program designed primarily for composers interested in music technology.

In the company of an international corps of advanced student composers, Noyes explored software being developed by the researchers, computer musicians and composers at IRCAM. Simultaneously, IRCAM was holding its Manifeste Festival, so every day one could find a contemporary music concert, lecture or master class around Paris.

Noyes writes: “It was fascinating to see how composers are integrating technology into their works today. Rather than replacing the traditional orchestra with a computer, these compos-ers weave technology into classical ensembles, i.e. ‘electro-acoustic’ music.’”

We look forward to hearing the artistic fruits of Noyes’ experience in the near future!

In this debut program, Emmy nominee and award winning composer and guitarist John Doan brings his love of music and history together to

engage his audience with an immersion ex-perience into the life and times of Fernando Sor (1778–1839), the premier 19th cen-tury guitarist known today as the “Father of the Classical guitar.” Doan will feature original works on a guitar built for Sor in 1819 among other instruments. Doan’s preshow and program will be accompanied by images of period paintings.
