• Experts have found just about every type of soil in such biomes

• The food supply in the savanna fluctuates drastically depending on the time of year

African elephants - are the largest land mammals on earth and can weigh up to twenty thousand

pounds

Zebras - roam the savanna in large herds eating grass. Their senses are very keen which helps them

avoid being caught by predators

Various grasses- highly specialized to grow in this environment of long periods of drought, with long

tap roots that can reach the deep water table

Umbrella Thorn Acacia - grow in areas with annual rainfall as low as 4 cm. They can survive in 122° F tem-peratures during the day and freezing temperatures at

night

Kruger National Park - Located in South Africa, includes decent roads

that take you close to the park's wildlife, includ-ing 147 different mammals and more than 500 species of birds.

- All of the camps except for the two near the park gates feature grocery stores and restaurant facili-ties.

Kalahari Gemsbok National Park - Parks in South Africa and Botswana; features

large expanses of red sand dunes and dry riverbeds that play home to large herds of desert antelope, known as gemsbok.

- Three camps give you options on where to spend the night
