Abstract: This is the archive collection of 59 assorted trophies. Some of the early trophies are solid sterling silver or silver-plated. They were valuable prizes. Other trophies are copper-plated for the distinctive color. Later trophies of wood, plastic, aluminum and base metals are symbols of honors won. Craftsmanship gives the trophies intrinsic value. These trophies provide a fair sampling of historical competitive programs.

Candace W. Lee, Assistant Archivist, tagged and cataloged 59 trophies. The original bibliographic record is in the Kamehameha Schools Library Catalog. When Stacy Naipo became Archivist in 2013, she took the trophies out of the display stand and packed them away for storage .

Biographical and Historical Note

Kamehameha School for Boys was a vocational and agricultural training program from its founding in 1887 to about 1934 when the Farm School at Haha’ione Valley was closed because of lack of enrollment. Competitions of all kinds were common including the Song Contest. Song Contest trophies are used annually and stored by Midkiff Learning Center. In 1966 when the Schools administrations merged, the Schools became co-educational. Some trophies reflect this change.

The Trophy Collection documents the excellence of Kamehameha School for Boys in competition for prizes in agriculture, athletics and other prizes. This collection is a fair sampling of competitive activities at Kamehameha Schools.

Arrangement

The arrangement is random by the original shelves the trophies once occupied. Because the trophies no longer occupy those shelves, the numbers are used in this Finding Aid represent Series that are randomly grouped from 1 to 7.
