How do you know the holidays are coming? We’re still in T-shirts and shorts, so you can’t tell by our clothes. Mosquitoes still plague us,

and the grass still needs cutting, so it’s not snowflakes coming down that give us a clue.

So what is it?

It’s the smell of fresh cut greenery that lets us know the holidays are just around the calendar corner. On Tuesday,

November 27th the truck arrived for distribution and pick up this year, and lots of aroma loving scouts and adult volunteers

caught the holiday spirit while they unloaded, sorted and delivered the fragrant greenery.

Troop 599’s Holiday Greenery Sales help raise funds for outings, equipment purchases and maintenance, and scholarships. It

is our major fund raising event of the year, and it also helps to get us in that holiday mood.

Nature Sanctuary Restoration

The Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary has been undergoing

a major restoration for the last couple of months. Great

care was needed to restore the rotting wood and deck in a

way that would maintain the historical integrity. More

than $200,000 was raised by private donations to fund the

restoration. The work is scheduled to be completed in

January, and a ribbon-cutting ceremony is scheduled for

January 12, 2013.

Troop 599 is proud and humbled to be of service to such a

peaceful oasis in the heart of our city.

Edith L. Moore Nature Sanctuary Cleanup, Saturday, December 22nd

The next conservation workday is on Saturday, December

22nd, from 8am to 12pm at the Edith L. Moore Nature

Sanctuary next to the MDUMC Church on Memorial Drive.

The Troop will buy pizza at 11:30 for the workers that

attend the entire morning. Wear shoes that can get

muddy (No flip flops or crocs). All scouts/family members

are welcome to help and earn service hours for rank

advancement and some merit badges, hours for the 50

miler award, or hours for other service hour requirements.

Adult helpers are needed too! Questions?

Contact Walt Bozeman at 281-597-9250.

SAVE THE DATES

February 3rd, February 10th In early February Troop 599 will recognize the contributions of youth and adults to Scouting and help the community through two separate events. On Scout

Sunday, Troop 599 will attend the 11:00 a.m. service at MDUMC, may assist with serving communion and will gather afterwards for a Troop photo. The date is still in

flux, but will be either Sunday, February 3 or 10. Troop 599 will also participate in the Souper Bowl of Giving on February 10, helping collect food and cash during the Sunday services at MDUMC to feed the hungry of our

community.

Please mark your calendars for the first two Sundays of February for these important events. And stay tuned as the

dates and our part in these events are finalized

Camping News King Ranch Outing

“It was awesome” - Troop 599 scout

There are so many great pictures from this outing! Check them out on the troop’s website

The King Ranch outing takes a lot of planning and

preparation. Path clearing and mowing, bonfire

setup, BBQ preparation, award assembly, tour

permits, car pool schedules, equipment checks,

range setup, safety reviews, Webelos invitations,

score card tally, trailer packing and towing, and

countless other tasks. For all that helped,

THANK YOU!!

King Ranch Outing Bonfire Setup

“It was a blast” - By Mrs. Phillips

This was my son Bryson’s third year at the King Ranch, and I wanted

to pitch in and help the Troop make this major recruiting event a

success once again. The last two years I’ve worked the jug-a-lug

station, and while that game is always a lot of fun, I was hoping for a

different assignment this year. Boy, did the Troop come through on

that! I was asked to help out on the bonfire crew. This was an

awesome responsibility and a load of fun. It took all day to set up the

rockets and other pyrotechnics used in the bonfire ceremony.

Running wires, positioning canisters to hold explosive devices,

testing currents, and helping Justin place the sombrero on top of the

wood pile were just some of the tasks I got to work on. Then, I got a

behind the scenes view to see all of our hard work go up in smoke.

Other adults might want to keep this opportunity in mind, as I

believe Mr. Wrench is looking for a few new apprentice volunteers

next year. It was a blast!

To our visiting Webelos guests:

Thanks for coming!

Hope you had fun!
