WELCOME TO THE TRON’S SUMMER SEASONThe lighter nights and better weather herald a new season at the Tron and a packedprogramme that once again presents the very best in new theatre.

Mayfesto is back, this time with a Celtic theme, but still championing new writingwith strong social and political resonances. Irish companies include Tinderbox withtheir award-winning Everything Between Us; the return of Blue Raincoat withanother bizarrely brilliant Flann O’Brien piece At-Swim-Two-Birds; Fishamble withtheir powerful Forgotten; and Mephisto Theatre with Tara McKevitt’s heart-wrenching first play Grenades. We also have Glasgow Actors with a revival ofKing of Scotland starring Jonathan Watson; and Tron Theatre Company presentingtwo works – a brand new David Harrower play Day Long and Leann O’Kasidirecting Gary Owen’s award-winning first play Crazy Gary’s Mobile Disco. Thebuilding will be a hot-bed of activity, with rehearsed readings, full scale productions,late-night cabaret and much, much more…

Work for and created by young people features prominently. Catherine Wheelsbring Caged, a contemporary but not so fairytale take on the classic Beauty and theBeast story; Visible Fictions & Scottish Opera present Clockwork; our ownSkillshop seniors present Project Branded, and the younger group a magicalmidsummer celebration The Curious Tale of Oak Tree Grove. SYT round up thisstrand of programming with their Summer of Horror musical-with-a-differenceProm Night of the Living Dead.

In the main house, the team behind Raindog present Lark, Clark and the PuppetHandy, a hilarious new play by Daniel Boyle; Pants on Fire bring their Fringe sell-out show Ovid’s Metamorphoses and we strengthen our relationship withRSAMD with two shows: What I Meant Was and Touched. As ever, the ChangingHouse programme features both new and familiar faces. Hand on Heart Theatrepresents the story of trailblazing transgender woman Angie Extraganza in FallingFlying; Grant Smeaton, master of mimicry, explores the rise and fall of comedianBenny Hill and if you’re not invited to the wedding of the year, join PaulineGoldsmith’s Sadie Wanfag for life-bingo in our Vic Bar instead!

We’ve also got The Swingcats, Christine Bovill, Refugee Week, the Jazz Festival andour regular Vic Bar cabaret, music and spoken word events. The season concludeswith a gloriously irreverent homage to the Hollywood classic movie Casablanca –withThe Gin Joint Cut – a sell-out success at Òran Mór and now re-worked forthe Tron with previously unseen material!

Casablanca: The Gin Joint Cut is a lovinglydisrespectful homage to one of the classic filmsof all time. First performed last year to sell-outaudiences at Òran Mór, a “superb multi-taskingcast” whisk you back to Morocco 1941, a Nazi-infested hotbed of corruption, teeming withrefugees and all the flotsam and jetsam of war-torn Europe. Cut to Rick’s bar where theémigrés gather, desperate to get hold of the all-elusive exit visa, when who should walk in butthe beautiful Ilsa, Rick’s long lost love…

Casablanca has some of the most iconic scenesand best lines ever written, so why not play itagain? But this time in a tiny gin joint, with threeactors. Morag Fullarton’s fast paced distillationwill have you raise a Bogart-style eyebrow, sheda Bergman-like tear and drown out the Naziswith a rousing chorus of the Marseillaise.

Mayfesto was established in 2010 as a new

theatre festival for Glasgow. Celebrating the

spoken word and exploring contemporary global

issues drawn out of political circumstance, it was

both provocative and engrossing.

While the focus for Mayfesto ’11 has shifted to

the Celtic lands of Scotland, Wales, and Ireland

showcasing powerful new writing remains at the

festival’s heart. New work by Tron Theatre

Company will be presented alongside pieces from

leading proponents of socially and politically

engaged (and engaging) theatre.

OF THE LIVING DEAD PROM NIGHT

The time is the late nineteen fifties. Theplace is the down-at-heel Criterion socialclub, wherein the fates have conspired tothrow former husband and wife singing duoLark and Clark together for the very lasttime. Not that a final goodbye shouldtrouble them. They’ve already separatedand haven’t seen each other in four years. And it is clear that time has not healed the

wounds that drove them apart. But then theCriterion’s stand-in barman begins to scratchat those wounds... with surprising results.

Barbara Rafferty and Sean Scanlan areLark and Clark, with Neil Leiper as thebarman in this romantic comedy written byDaniel Boyle, directed by Stuart Davids, and designed by Kenny Miller.

Scottish Youth Theatre’s annual summerperformance at the Tron takes a turn forthe ghoulish this year, as the horror themeseeps into every aspect of this delightfullyzany musical.

Just another graduating class of teenagers, eager to leave school and embark on therest of their lives after their last prom. Afew tiny details hinder all of this; a memberof the class has been turned into a werewolf,

at around the same time a witch and threeevil monsters invade the town, the witchwants to hunt down the werewolf and inthe process of doing so snares all theother young men in her path. The fate ofthe town (and more importantly – promnight) rests upon the town’s young women.

Let the cast of Scottish Youth Theatre’sSummer Festival 2011 treat you to thisthoroughly unconventional musical drama.

MURRAY ROBERTSONNEW WORKWhilst maintaining an interest in traditionalprintmaking techniques through many yearsof association with the Glasgow Print Studio,it is the research, development and applicationof new technologies, specifically digital imagingand printing, that has most influencedRobertson’s current professional practice.

Works of deliberate graphical precisiondraw upon the iconography of signs andsymbols inherent to the matrix of bothmystical and scientific knowledge systems.Echoes drawn from diverse cultures aremerged or contrasted with current “rational”and empirical paradigms. Densely workedsurfaces, cramped or ambiguous pictorialspace, obsessive attention to detail and thestrategic use of colour effects are some ofthe techniques, devices and materialsemployed in a desire to “see” the world asvibrant with symbolic meaning and to read“reality” as a compelling allegory which ismany-layered and rationally disobedient.
