Ook dit jaar vindt dit concours en festival weer plaats in eindhoven. en dat

is heel goed. zeker omdat TROMP met de stad en regio eindhoven steeds

verder groeit. nog nooit ontving de organisatie zo veel inschrijvingen als

dit jaar. Maar liefst 95 uit 35 landen. en dan ook nog eens verdeeld over vijf

continenten.

Het TROMP concours & festival is een mooi voorbeeld van de levende cultuurstad

Eindhoven. Het is het enige internationale concours voor soloslagwerk en zodoende

de ontmoetingsplaats voor de internationale slagwerktop. Een hoog niveau is hier

aanwezig in Eindhoven. De jury, bestaande uit onder meer de Amerikaan Terry Bozzio,

Momoko Kamiya uit Japan en de Oekraïner Andrei Pushkarev, zal een zware opgave

hebben om al die kwaliteit te beoordelen. Ook is het TROMP festival het grootste

slagwerkfestival van Nederland. Unieke concerten met grote namen, zoals Stewart

Copeland (de drummer van de Police), Luis Conte, Gary Burton en Ojos de Brujo.

Eindhoven, de stad van technologie, kennis, design én cultuur. Een schitterend

vernieuwd Muziekgebouw is het toneel van dit festival. Dat past in de stad met de

ambitie om tot de toptechnologische wereldtop te horen. Het past bij de stad die door

de Financial Times is uitgeroepen tot stad van de toekomst. Bij zo’n stad in zo’n

ambitieuze Brainport-regio horen uitgaansmogelijkheden, cultuur en karakter.

Hoogwaardige kenniswerkers moeten zich thuis voelen in een stad die zich meet

met de Europese en mondiale top. Maar ook aan de scholieren wordt gedacht. Vele

educatieprojecten op tientallen scholen in de regio vormen een vast onderdeel van dit

concours en festival.

Ik ben dan ook trots dat de organisatie ook dit jaar weer in staat is om een programma

van grote klasse te realiseren. Ik wens u allen veel luistergenot en plezier toe tijdens het

programma TROMP 2010. Het belooft wederom een onvergetelijke editie te worden.

welcome to TROMP Percussion eindhoven 2010. we are very pleased that eindhoven

is once again the stage for this competition and festival, especially because

TROMP continues to grow together with the city and the eindhoven region. The

competition has never before had so many applications; an impressive 95 from

35 different countries spread over five continents.

The TROMP competition & festival is a great example of Eindhoven as a lively city of culture.

It is the only international competition for solo percussion and as such is a meeting place for

the international top in the world of percussion. Eindhoven once again welcomes several

world-class musicians. The jury, including American Terry Bozzio, Momoko Kamiya fom Japan

and Andrei Pushkarev from the Ukraine, have no easy task in assessing such a high standard

of participants. The TROMP festival is also the Netherlands’ largest percussion festival,

including unique concerts by famous musicians such as Stewart Copeland (the drummer

from the Police), Luis Conte, Gary Burton and Ojos de Brujo.

Eindhoven is a city of technology, knowledge, design and culture. The beautifully renovated

Muziekgebouw is the home of this festival. This fits perfectly with the city’s ambition to be a

world-class technological location. It fits perfectly in the city that has been heralded by the

Financial Times as a city of the future. Such a city, located in the ambitious Brainport-region,

should be home to excellent entertainment facilities, culture and character. Highly educated

workers in the region should feel perfectly at home in a city that can count itself together

with the top-class of Europe. But there is also a focus on students. A multitude of educational

projects in tens of schools form a fixed component of this competition and festival.

I am proud that the organisers have once again succeeded in compiling a top-class

programme. I wish you all an enjoyable time during the TROMP 2010 competition and festival.

TROMP viert feest. alweer veertig jaar geleden werd op basis van een

aanzienlijke schenking van dr. ir. Theo Tromp in samenwerking met de gemeente

eindhoven begonnen met een muziekconcours voor jonge getalenteerde musici.

in de loop der jaren hebben vele instrumenten én aansprekende laureaten in de

schijnwerpers gestaan.

Twintig edities verder heeft TROMP zich ontwikkeld tot één van de toonaangevende muziek-

wedstrijden in de wereld. Om deze positie te behouden en verder uit te bouwen heeft TROMP

vorig jaar besloten met ingang van deze editie te focussen op solopercussie. Bij een dergelijke

keus hoort ook een nieuwe naam TROMP Percussion Eindhoven. De ingrediënten blijven

echter ongewijzigd. TROMP presenteert ook dit jaar een concours van wereldformaat en een

internationaal festival aangevuld met aansprekende educatieve projecten. Dat deze formule

aanspreekt blijkt wel uit het recordaantal van 95 inschrijvingen afkomstig uit 35 landen

verspreidt over 5 continenten.

Namens TROMP Percussion Eindhoven een warm welkom aan onze deelnemende percussionisten

die werkelijk uit alle delen van de wereld naar Eindhoven zijn gekomen om uit te maken wie zich de

muzikale opvolger mag noemen van Yi-Ping Yang, die in 2006 de finale won.

Met dank aan onder meer de Gemeente Eindhoven, de Provincie Noord-Brabant, talloze

subsidiënten, culturele organisaties en, last but not least, onze bedrijfssponsoren, zijn we erin

geslaagd de organisatie van dit concours en festival internationaal verder te profileren. TROMP

2010 is daarvan het bewijs, maar ook buiten de concoursperiode opereert TROMP steeds

meer wereldwijd. Zo werden de afgelopen jaren concerten voor Laureaten georganiseerd in

China en Algerije en internationale masterclasses voor aanstormend talent.

Het team van het Muziekgebouw Frits Philips Eindhoven heeft een ijzersterk festivalprogramma

in elkaar gezet met meer unieke eigen producties dan ooit tevoren, rondom aansprekende

namen als Stewart Copeland, Terry Bozzio en Gary Burton. Ook is er wederom een jury van

internationaal top-niveau aangetrokken op het gebied van slagwerk, zijn er aantrekkelijke prijzen

TROMP is celebrating. it was forty years ago that a substantial donation

from dr. ir. Theo Tromp formed the basis for a collaboration with eindhoven

city council to begin a music competition for young, talented musicians.

Many instruments and famous laureates have been in the competition’s

spotlight over the years.

Twenty editions later, TROMP has now developed into one of the most prominent

music competitions in the world. In order to hold this position and to develop further,

TROMP made the decision last year to focus on solo percussion, starting with this

edition. Such a choice also deserves a new name, TROMP Percussion Eindhoven,

but the ingredients remain unchanged. This year TROMP once again presents a world-

class competition and an international festival complete with exciting educational

projects. The record number of 95 applications from 35 different countries over

5 continents is proof that this is a winning formula.

On behalf of TROMP Percussion Eindhoven I wish a warm welcome to our partici-

pating percussionists that have literally travelled to Eindhoven from far and wide to

determine who will be the successor of Yi-Ping Yang, who won the final in 2006.

Thanks to Eindhoven City Council, the Province of Noord-Brabant, countless subsidi-

zers, cultural organisations and, last but not least, our corporate sponsors, we have

succeeded in increasing the international profile of the organization of this competi-

tion and festival. TROMP 2010 is proof of this, but even outside the competition itself,

TROMP continues to increase its scope worldwide. As such, concerts for Laureates

have been organized in China and Algeria during the past years and international

master-classes have been held for up-and-coming talent.

The team at Muziekgebouw Frits Philips Eindhoven has compiled an excellent festival

programme with more unique productions then ever before, including famous names

such as Stewart Copeland, Terry Bozzio and Gary Burton. There are once again a jury

of international top-class experts in the field of percussion, super prizes and of course

the ever-enthusiastic and adept audience. In short, all the ingredients needed to make

this twentieth edition of TROMP a great success. I wish all participants and spectators a

,,Meneer en mevrouw Tromp…’’ Violiste Emmy Verhey spreekt het uit met een enorme

warmte in haar stem. ,,Hele bijzondere mensen. Het is geen kleinigheid om uit het

niets zo’n concours neer te zetten.’’

Dat eerste Tromp Concours kwam er in 1971. ,,Mijn vader was van mening dat jonge

mensen veel te weinig kansen kregen’’, zegt Annelie Gelijns-Tromp, inmiddels erelid

van het bestuur, over haar vader dr. Ir. Theo Tromp. ,,Hij had zijn hele leven voor Philips

gewerkt en hij droeg Eindhoven een warm hart toe. Toen mijn broer op 18-jarige

leeftijd aan een hersentumor overleed besloot hij dat om te buigen in iets positiefs.

Hij riep een fonds in het leven om een concours te beginnen voor jonge musici die zo

podiumervaring op konden doen.’’

,,Het betekende enorm veel voor mij in die tijd’’, zegt Emmy Verhey, de winnares van

het eerste concours. ,,Ik zat een beetje in een dip wat aanbiedingen betreft en ik had

net een kind gekregen. Door de de begeleiding van de mensen achter het concours en

de nodige persaandacht gingen er weer vele deuren open!’’

,,Mijn vader voelde zich altijd erg verbonden met het concours en de musici’’, zegt

Annelie Gelijns-Tromp. ,,Ik wilde daarom perse in het bestuur. Hoe moet het als jij er

niet meer bent?, zei ik dan tegen hem.’’

Toen Tromp in 1984 overleed moest het tweejaarlijkse concours op zoek naar wegen

om zich te onderscheiden binnen het groeiende aantal concoursen. ,,We besloten

tot een internationale koers en om meer aandacht te besteden aan instrumenten die

elders minder aan bod kwamen’’, zegt Gelijns-Tromp. Vanaf 2004 concentreerde het

Tromp Concours zich afwisselend op strijkkwartet en percussie. ,,Een mooi initiatief’’,

volgens het Engelse Heath Quartet dat het laatste strijkkwartetconcours in 2008 won.

,,Het probleem met de strijkkwartetten was dat het concours erg gevoelig werd voor

afmeldingen door de vele strijkkwartetconcoursen die elkaar in de weg zaten’’, zegt

Gelijns-Tromp. Vandaar dat het strijkkwartet nu van de agenda verdwenen is. Het

concours beleeft nu zijn eerste slagwerkeditie als TROMP Percussion Eindhoven.

,,Enorm belangrijk’’, vindt slagwerker Ramon Lormans deze keuze. ,,Er zijn

internationaal niet zo veel percussieconcoursen en –festivals. Mijn herinneringen aan

2006 zijn erg goed. Ik won de derde prijs en kreeg vele mogelijkheden aangereikt.

Ik beveel dit concours zeker bij mijn studenten aan.’’

,,We zijn weer helemaal terug bij de oorspronkelijke idealen’’, zegt Gelijns-Tromp over

deze transformatie. ,,We besteden aandacht aan een instrumentgroep die elders

nauwelijks aan bod komt en daarmee kunnen we echt iets betekenen voor jonge

slagwerkers.’’

“Mr. and Mrs. Tromp…” Violinist Emmy Verhey speaks the words with enormous

warmth in her voice. “Very special people. It is no trifle to create such a competition

from scratch.”

The first Tromp Competition took place in 1971. “My father was of the opinion that

young people were not given enough chances”, says Annelie Gelijns-Tromp, now

honorary member of the board, about her father dr. Ir. Theo Tromp. “He had worked his

entire life for Philips and was very fond of Eindhoven. When my brother died of a brain

tumour at the age of 18, he decided to pour his efforts into something positive. He

created a fund with the aim of starting a competition for young musicians so that they

could gain experience in performing on stage.”

“It meant a great deal to me at the time”, says Emmy Verhey, the winner of the very

first competition. “I was at a rather low point in my career and I had just had a baby.

The guidance of the competition organizers and the following media attention opened

many doors for me!”

“My father always felt a strong connection with the competition and the musicians”,

says Annelie Gelijns-Tromp. “That is why I wanted to join the board. How can we

continue when you are no longer here?, I said to him.”

When Tromp passed away in 1984, the biennial competition began searching for ways

to distinguish itself within the growing number of musical competitions. “We chose

to make it an international competition and to focus on instruments that were less

well represented elsewhere”, says Gelijns-Tromp. From 2004 the focus of the Tromp

Competition alternated between the string quartet and percussion. “A great initiative”,

according to the English Heath Quartet. They were the winners of the last string

quartet competition in 2008.

“The problem with the string quartet was that the competition was heavily influenced

by cancellations due to many other string quartet competitions happening at the same

time”, says Gelijns-Tromp. This is why the string quartet has now disappeared from the

programme. The competition now sees the first percussion edition as TROMP Percussion

Eindhoven. Percussionist Ramon Lormans considers this choice “extremely important”.

“There are not so many international percussion competitions and festivals. My

memories of 2006 are good ones. I won the third prize and it made many new things

possible for me. I recommend this competition without hesitation to my students.”

“We have returned to the original ideals”, says Gelijns-Tromp about this transformation.

“We are focussing on an instrument group that receives relatively little attention

elsewhere and can thereby really make a difference for young percussionists.”

Lucas Vis dirigeert met grote regelmaat de orkesten van

de Duitse radiostations in Keulen, Frankfurt, Stuttgart,

München en Berlijn. Daarnaast is hij een veelgevraagd

dirigent van ensembles voor nieuwe muziek, zoals het

Nieuw Ensemble en ensemble recherche (Freiburg).

Met het Arditti Quartet en ensemble recherche maakte

hij opnamen van Funerailles van Brian Ferneyhough en

voerde hij deze compositie live uit tijdens de Salzburger

Festspiele 2005. Aan het Conservatorium van Amster-

dam, waarvan hij van 1998 tot 2005 artistiek directeur

was, doceert hij orkestdirectie.

Lucas Vis regularly conducts the orchestras of the German radio

stations in Cologne, Frankfurt, Stuttgart, Munich and Berlin. He

is also often invited to stand before ensembles for new music,

such as the Nieuw Ensemble and ensemble recherche (Freiburg).

He completed recordings of Funerailles by Brian Ferneyhough

with the Arditti Quartet en ensemble recherché and performed

this rendition live at the Salzburger Festspiele 2005. He cur-

rently teaches orchestral conducting at the Conservatorium of

Amsterdam, where he held the position of artistic manager from

1998 to 2005.

De xylofoon komt uit Afrika, bekkens waren er al bij de

oude Grieken en Romeinen, de logdrum is gewoon een

holle stam, de guiro is een uitgeholde kalebas (Latijns-

Amerika), de kleurrijkste gongs komen uit Azië. Kortom:

een wereldwijd instrumentarium voor een onuitputte-

lijke klankweelde.

Slagwerkers zijn veelzijdig. Vanzelfsprekend kunnen ze

goed slaan, maar ook de strijkstok hanteren op onder

andere de vibrafoon, wrijven op de rand van een glas of

blazen op alle mogelijke fluitjes wordt niet geschuwd.

De laatste honderd jaar hebben het instrumentarium en

de virtuositeit van de bespelers een grote vlucht geno-

men. Naast de nieuwste muziek, waar slagwerk vrijwel

altijd prominent aanwezig is, richten de slagwerkers zich

steeds meer op ouder repertoire in arrangementen van

hoog niveau. Een goed voorbeeld is de Chaconne van

Bach voor marimba!

Jonge slagwerkers aan de slag te zien is een feest voor

The xylophone comes from Africa, cymbals were used by the an-

cient Greeks and Romans, the log drum is just a hollow stem, the

guiro is a hollowed-out gourd (Latin-American), the most colourful

gongs come from Asia. In short: a worldwide set of instruments

for an inexhaustible profusion of sound.

Percussionists are versatile. Not only are they masters of the

drum stick, but they can also use a bow to play the vibraphone,

rub the edge of a glass or blow into all kinds of whistles to create

their music.

The number of different instruments and the virtuosity of the

musicians have seen vast progression throughout the last

hundred years. As well as the newest music, in which percussion

almost always plays a prominent role, percussionists are also

turning back towards an older repertoire with arrangements of

the highest quality. A good example is the Chaconne for marimba

by Bach!

Seeing young percussionists at work is a feast for both eye

and ear. In combination with a competitive element it even

Terry Bozzio begon zijn professionele carrière na zijn

afstuderen aan het College of Marin in Kentfield, Cali-

fornië in 1971. De klassiek geschoolde slagwerker was

aanvankelijk actief in de locale jazzscène, maar daaraan

kwam een eind toen hij in 1974 werd gevraagd om met

Frank Zappa te spelen. Deze samenwerking resulteerde

in tien studio-albums, de concertfilm Baby Snakes en

drie wereldtournees. De compositie The Black Page is

wellicht het bekendste voorbeeld van de baanbrekende

speltechniek van deze slagwerker, die van grote invloed

is geweest (en nog steeds is) op nieuwe generaties

muzikanten en drummers.

Terry Bozzio began his professional career after graduating

from the College of Marin in Kentfield, California in 1971. The

classically schooled percussionist was originally active in the

local jazz scene, but this all changed in 1974 when he was

asked to play with Frank Zappa. This collaboration resulted

in ten studio albums, the concert film Baby Snakes and three

world tours. His composition The Black Page is perhaps the

most famous example of the groundbreaking technique of

this percussionist, who has had (and still has) a great influ-

ence on new generations of musicians and drummers.

in Luxemburg in 1995. In 2001 werd ze door de Toyota

Foundation gekozen tot één van ‘The Top Young Artists

Today’. In 2005 kreeg ze in Japan voor haar aanzienlijke

muziekactiviteiten ontving de Azalea Cultural Prize

van Kawasaki City. In 2008 maakte ze haar debuut in

New York in de Zankel zaal van Carnegie Hall. Ze heeft

verschillende concerten gegeven met grote orkesten

waaronder het Radio Symphonie Orkest van Luxemburg,

werken die de laatste jaren aan het slagwerkrepertoire

zijn toegevoegd. Hij staat in hoog aanzien bij col-

lega’s en heeft met tal van artiesten van naam nauw

samengewerkt, zoals met Katia and Marielle Labeque,

het Los Angeles Guitar Quartet, Pierre-Laurent Aimard

en Joshua Bell.

Colin Currie enjoys a diverse career as a percussion soloist

and performs every season with great orchestras across

Europe, North America and further afield. His repertoire now

includes an impressive list of works written for him, including

some of the most significant pieces to be added to the per-

cussion repertoire in recent years. Highly regarded among

colleagues, he has enjoyed various close collaborations with

artists such as Katia and Marielle Labeque, The Los Angeles

Guitar Quartet, Pierre-Laurent Aimard and Joshua Bell.

Brabantse ensemble Lunapark, waarvan hij ook dirigent

is. Ongedirigeerde kamermuziek voert Arnold Marinissen

uit met het Ives Ensemble. Hij was artistiek leider van

de Slagwerkgroep Den Haag en was samen met Terry

Bozzio artist in residence bij het Traces of Rhythm festival.

Regelmatig wordt hij gevraagd als gastprogrammeur;

zo programmeert hij voor het Muziekgebouw aan ‘t IJ in

Amsterdam het World Minimal Music Festival. Marinissen

componeerde onder andere voor het VocaalLAB, Calefax

Rietkwintet en het Asko Kamerkoor.

After completing studies in classical music at the Conser-

Nancy has premiered more than 125 pieces for marimba,

ther Schuller, Louis Andriessen, Carla Bley and Steven Mac-

key. She has also recorded three solo marimba CDs - Sweet

Song, See Ya Thursday and Woodcuts - and a duo marimba

concours. Voor iedere kandidaat schrijven zij een jury-

rapport, gebaseerd op hun eigen beoordelingscriteria.

Het Pleincollege St. Joris geeft scholieren in het Kunst &

Cultuur project de mogelijkheid zich op het gebied van

dans, theater, beeldende kunst of muziek te ontwikke-

len. Dit zijn onze juryleden: Bob Bukkems (16) en Steef

Beckers (16) spelen beide drums, Kirsten van Alphen

(18) piano, Lucas Thijs (18) gitaar en voorzitster Nicole

van den Berg (18) zingt.

yOuTh juRy Students from the Pleincollege St. Joris in Eindhoven will

choose their own winner during the TROMP Final. Five stu-

dents will form the youth jury for this edition of TROMP. They

will follow the participants throughout the competition and

will write a jury rapport for each candidate based on their

own assessment criteria.

The Pleincollege St. Joris gives students in the Art & Culture

project the opportunity to develop their skills in the fields of

dance, theatre, visual arts or music. Our five jury members

are: Bob Bukkems (16) and Steef Beckers (16) both play

drums, Kirsten van Alphen (18) is a pianist, Lucas Thijs (18)

plays guitar and Chairwoman Nicole van den Berg (18) is a

singer.

Lucie Antunes (1986) deed haar eerste ervaring met slagwerk op op 15 jarige leeftijd

aan het Conservatoire de Marseille. Vier jaar later won ze haar eerste prijzen voor

slagwerk en kamermuziek. Ze studeerde bij diverse slagwerkers zoals Anders Loguin

en Sylvio Gualda. Op 21-jarige leeftijd kreeg ze de Marcel-Bluestein Blanchet Fondation

toegekend. In 2008 was ze één van de vier finalisten in het ARD Concours in München.

Sinds 2008 studeert ze aan het Conservatoire National Supérieur de Lyon en de Cité

Internationale des Arts in Parijs.

Lucie Antunes’ (1986) first encounter with percussion was at the age of fifteen at the

Conservatoire National de Marseille. Four years later, she won her first prizes for percussion

and chamber music. She has studied with numerous percussionists such as Anders Loguin,

and Sylvio Gualda. At the age of 21 she was awarded the Marcel-Bluestein Blanchet

Julian Belli (1982) begon zijn opleiding aan de Musikhochschule Trossingen. In 2008

studeerde hij een jaar bij Gert Mortensen aan de Royal Academy van Kopenhagen.

Momenteel studeert hij bij Bernhard Wulff in Freiburg. Hij won de eerste prijs bij “Jugend

Musiziert” en won diverse studiebeurzen. Julian maakt deel uit van diverse percussie

ensembles en het Duits Nationaal Jeugd Orkest. Hij speelde als solist met het Stuttgart

Chamber Orchestra en op festivals in Vietnam, Oekraïne en Zwitserland.

Lucia Carro Veiga (1988) startte haar studie aan het Conservatory of Music in A Coruña.

In 2008 behaalde ze haar diploma Music Studies aan het Conservatoire National de

Région in Perpignan en in 2009 behaalde ze haar bachelor in C.S.M aan het

conservatorium op de Balearen. Op het moment studeert ze, dankzij een studiebeurs

van het Spaans Nationaal Jeugd Orkest, aan de Hochschule für Musik in Basel. Als

uitvoerend musicus heeft ze gespeeld met onder meer met het Nederlandse Nationaal

Jeugd Orkest.

MaRk eichenbeRgeR (uniTed sTaTes OF aMeRica)

Mark Eichenberger (1982) behaalde zijn Master aan de University of Illinois bij William

Moersch en Ricardo Flores. Momenteel volgt hij daar zijn D.M.A. opleiding. Mark is actief

in diverse klassieke en wereldmuziek ensembles en rockbands, waaronder het Phantom

Regiment Drum and Bugle Corps, waarmee hij in 2001 zowel individueel als in ensemble

verband kampioen werd. Met het gamelan ensemble van de universiteit trad hij in 2008

op tijdens het Bali Arts Festival, Indonesië. Als solo musicus heeft hij twee werken in

opdracht laten schrijven en tien werken in première gebracht.

Mark Eichenberger (1982) studied under William Moersch and Ricardo Flores for his Master’s

degree at the University of Illinois where he is currently studying for his D.M.A. Mark is

involved with numerous classical and world music ensembles and rock bands including the

maakt(e) hij deel uit van diverse orkesten waaronder het Orchestre National de Lyon,

Orchestre Régional de Cannes en het Orchestre Français des Jeunes.

Alexandre Esperet (1987) started his education at the Conservatoire d’ Avignon and is

the first prize at the Cannes Marimba Competition and a year later he was among the finalists

alexej geRassiMez (geRMany)

Alexej Gerassimez (1987) startte op zevenjarige leeftijd met percussie. Van 2000 tot 2004

studeerde hij aan de Hochschule te Keulen. Sinds 2008 studeert hij bij Peter Sadlo aan

de Hochschule für Musik te München. Alexej won de eerste prijs bij diverse concoursen

waaronder de Deutscher Musikwettbewerb 2010, het Marimba Festival Nürnberg, het

EU Jeugd en Muziekconcours en Jugend Musiziert. Alexej heeft als solist menig recital

gegeven op festivals in Europa en Japan, waaronder op het Mecklenburg Vorpommern

Festival, waar hij de Ensemble Award of Nordmetall in de wacht sleepte.

Seul Ki Im (1984) behaalde haar bachelor diploma aan de EWHA-Women University te

Seoul, Zuid Korea. Sinds 2008 studeert zij aan de Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe.

Op achttienjarige leeftijd soleerde Seul Ki reeds met het Concertino voor Marimba

en Orkest van Paul Creston met het Sung-Sil Orchestra. Daarnaast trad zij op met het

Academy Percussion Ensemble van de Seoel Academy.

Seul Ki Im (1984) achieved her Bachelor’s degree at the EWHA Women University in Seoul,

South Korea. She has been studying at the Hochschule für Musik in Karlsruhe since 2008.

At the age of eighteen she performed as soloist in Paul Creston’s Marimba Concertino with

the Sung-Sil Orchestra. She has also performed as a soloist with the Academy Percussion

RyOkO iMai (jaPan)

Ryoko Imai (1983) startte haar specialisatie in slagwerk op zestienjarige leeftijd. Tussen 2003

en 2007 studeerde ze aan de Graduate School of the Tokyo College of Music. Sinds 2008

studeerde ze aan het Conservatorium van Amsterdam, waar ze in mei 2010 cum laude haar

Bachelor behaalde. In 2009 won ze de tweede prijs bij de Pendim International Percussion

Competition in Plovdiv, Bulgarije, waar ze tevens twee speciale prijzen won. Ryoko werkt

graag met diverse kunstdisciplines, waaronder dans, mode en video. Recent trad ze samen

op met Nebojsa Zivkovic tijdens het Festival Mad Marimbas Novi Sad, Servië.

Ryoko Imai (1983) started her education in percussion at the age of sixteen. Between 2003

Yukinobu Ishikawa (1982) studeerde aanvankelijk psychologie aan de Universiteit van

Tokyo en volgde daarnaast privé slagwerk- piano- en vioollessen. Sinds 2007 studeert

hij aan de Hochschule für Musik Detmold bij Peter Prommel. In 2009 bereikte hij de

halve finale van het Concours van Genève en behaalde hij de eerste prijs tijdens

de Percussion Duo Competition in Detmold. Yukinobu treedt veelvuldig op als

(barok)paukenist met diverse orkesten en gaf solorecitals onder meer tijdens het

Nancy Zeltsman Marimba Festival 2010.

Yukinobu Ishikawa (1982) originally studied psychology at the University of Tokyo. His musical

education consisted of private percussion, piano and violin lessons. He has been studying at

the Hochschule für Musik Detmold with Peter Prommel since 2007. In 2009 he reached the

semi-finals of the Percussion Competition of Geneva and in the same year he was awarded

first prize at the Percussion Duo Competition of Detmold. Yukinobu frequently performs as

(baroque) timpanist with numerous orchestras and as a soloist his performances have inclu-

ded a recital at the Nancy Zeltsman Marimba Festival 2010.

Sandra Joseph (1985) behaalde haar Bachelor aan het Conservatoire de Musique de

Montréal en completeerde vervolgens haar Master aan de McGill University. Sandra

treedt regelmatig op in een breed scala aan muziekensembles en -genres, waaronder

het Orchestre Metropolitain, het Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal en het Sixtrum

Percussion Ensemble. Daarnaast ligt haar interesse bij theatrale producties gericht op

kinderen, waarbij kamermuziek, verhalen, creatieve beweging, zang en dans samen-

vloeien.

Sandra Joseph (1985) achieved her Bachelor’s degree from the Conservatoire de Musique de

Montréal and continued her Master’s studies at McGill University. Sandra regularly performs

various musical genres with a wide variety of musical ensembles, including Orchestre

Métropolitain, Orchestre Symphonique de Montréal and the Sixtrum Percussion Ensemble.

Kasia Katarzyna Kadlubowska (1987) studeert naar verwachting dit studiejaar af aan de

Academy of Music and Performing Arts Stuttgart bij Marta Klimasara. In 2005 behaalde

zij de eerste prijs tijdens het Vibrafoon Concours in Opole. In de daaropvolgende jaren

won ze de tweede prijs bij de marimba concoursen van zowel Parijs als Fermo, Italië.

Kasia Katarzyna is een veelzijdig slagwerker en speelt onder meer met het hedendaags

muziekensemble Baikonur, het wereldmuziek ensemble Kutin en haar eigen ensemble

DUALITY, waarbij ze samenwerkt met een jazz-vibrafonist aangevuld met visual arts.

Kasia Katarzyna Kadlubowska (1987) will complete her studies this year at the Academy

of Music and Performing Arts in Stuttgart with Marta Klimasara. In 2005 she won first prize

at the Vibraphone Competition in Opole. During the following years she was awarded the

second prize at the marimba competitions in both Parijs and Fermo, Italy. Kasia Katarzyna is

a versatile percussionist and has played with the contemporary music ensemble Baikonur,

world music ensemble Kutin and her own ensemble DUALITY, where she collaborates with a

jazz vibraphonist to combine music with visual arts.

Mei-yi lee (Taiwan)

Mei-Yi Lee (1982) behaalde haar bachelor aan de National Taiwan University of Arts,

waarna ze haar muziekstudie voortzette aan het Koninklijk Conservatorium in Den

Haag. Momenteel rond ze haar Master af rondom de werken van John Cage. Zij is

regelmatig gastmusicus bij diverse ensembles zoals Slagwerkgroep Den Haag, het

Taiwan Youth Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble 1002 en het National Taiwan

Symphony Orchestra.

Mei-Yi Lee (1982) achieved her Bachelor’s degree at the National Taiwan University of Arts,

after which she continued her musical education at the Royal Conservatory in The Hague.

She is currently concluding her Master’s degree with a study of the works of John Cage.

She is a regular guest performer with several ensembles such as Slagwerkgroep Den Haag,

the Taiwan Youth Orchestra, Percussion Ensemble 1002 and the National Taiwan Symphony

Orchestra.

Zhe Lin (1989) begon haar muzikale opleiding op dertienjarige leeftijd aan het

International Center Conservatorium van Beijing. Sinds 2007 vervolgt zij haar opleiding

aan de Hochschule für Musik te Stuttgart. In 2008 won ze de tweede prijs op de World

Marimba Competition Stuttgart. Van 2002 tot 2006 was ze de solopaukenist bij het

China Junior Windorchestra en het China Junior Symphonieorchestra. Tegenwoordig

speelt zij onder meer met het JianLi Percussionensemble, het Stuttgart Percussion-

ensemble Talking Drums en het Inspiration Percussion Duo.

Zhe Lin (1989) started her musical education at the age of thirteen at the International Centre

Conservatory of Music in Beijing. She has been studying at the Hochschule für Musik, Stuttgart

since 2007. In 2008 she won second prize in the World Marimba Competition in Stuttgart.

From 2002 to 2006 she performed as solo-timpanist with the China Junior Wind Orchestra

and the China Junior Symphony Orchestra. She is currently a member of the JianLi percussion

ensemble, the Stuttgart percussion ensemble Talking Drums and the Inspiration Percussion

Vitaly Medvedev (1988) begon zijn opleiding op zevenjarige leeftijd aan de speciale

muziekschool van het Rimsky Korsakov Conservatorium in St. Petersburg. Vanaf 2006

studeerde hij aan het Prins Claus Conservatorium te Groningen en sinds dit jaar aan

het Koninklijk Conservatorium te Den Haag. Hij schreef diverse prijzen op zijn naam o.a.

tijdens het International Music Festival “Coast of Hope” in Bulgarije en behaalde een

eervolle vermelding op het concours van Brno. Vitaly heeft al veelvuldig opgetreden, niet

alleen in St.Petersburg, maar ook in Duitsland, Finland, Estland, Zwitserland en Oostenrijk.

Garrett Mendelow (1989) studeert aan de University of Michigan. Hij nam deel aan

diverse concoursen waaronder de marimba concoursen van Parijs en Salzburg. In

2009 won hij de tweede prijs op de PASIC International Multiple Percussion

Competition en werd hij gekozen als winnaar van de Yamaha Young Performing Artists

Competition in de ‘percussion’ categorie. Garrett is momenteel lid van de University

of Michigan Concert Band, het University of Michigan Percussion Ensemble en de

Vencedores Samba Band.

Garrett Mendelow (1989) is a student at the University of Michigan. He has participated in

numerous competitions including the marimba competitions in Paris and Salzburg. In 2009

he won second prize at the PASIC International Multiple Percussion Competition and was

chosen as winner of the Yamaha Young Performing Artists Competition in the Percussion

category. Garrett is currently a member of the University of Michigan Concert Band, the

Lennard Nijs (1990) startte in 2006 met de Vooropleiding aan het Conservatorium in Tilburg

en vervolgde in 2007 zijn studie aan het Conservatorium van de Hogeschool voor de Kunsten

in Utrecht. In 2006 won Lennard de wereldtitel in de Topdivisie van de Internationale

Ensemble- en Solistenwedstrijd WMC in Kerkrade en in 2008 was hij prijswinnaar in de

Nationale Finale van het Prinses Christina Concours. In november 2009 maakte Lennard

op uitnodiging van de Nederlandse Ambassade een tournee door Denemarken en in het

seizoen 2010-2011 is hij slagwerker aan de György Ligeti Academy Amsterdam.

Lennard Nijs (1990) began his musical training in 2006 at the Conservatorium in Tilburg and

continued his studies at the Conservatorium of the School for the Arts in Utrecht in 2007. In

2006 Lennard won the world title in the Top division of the International Ensemble and Soloist

contest WMC in Kerkrade and in 2008 he was a prize winner at the National Final of the

Princess Christina Competition. In November 2009 Lennard was invited by the Dutch

Embassy to tour through Denmark and in the 2010-2011 season he is percussionist at the

György Ligeti Academy in Amsterdam.

Mariko Nishioka (1980) startte haar opleiding aan het Doshisha Women’s College en

studeerde vervolgens aan de Hochschule in Freiburg en de Musik-Akademie in Bazel. In

2003 won ze de speciale prijs op de KOBE International Competition en in 2007 was ze

één van de finalisten tijdens het ARD Concours in München. Recenter won ze de Japan

Percussion Competition en ontving ze een stipendium prijs voor hedendaagse muziek in

Darmstadt en de prestigieuze Heiwado Foundation prijs. Als soliste werkte Mariko met

Pierluigi Billone en Gorges Aperghis en met het Ensemble Recherché en het Polaris Trio.

Alex Petcu (1986) began his musical studies at the Cork School of Music aged five. At the age

of fifteen he started studies in percussion at the Nantes Conservatoire de Région in France.

He was recently awarded numerous prizes at the Irish CSM competition in the categories

Junior Concerto, Senior Concerto and Senior recital. Alex frequently performs both as a

soloist and with orchestras such as the National Youth Orchestra of Ireland, the International

Jongste deelnemer Simone Rubino (1993) volgde zijn studie aan het “Giuseppe Verdi”

Conservatorium te Turijn, Italië, bij Riccardo Balbinutti. Hij won reeds diverse prijzen

waaronder de “National Prize of Art”, de “Luigi IX” International Competition in Venaria

en de Talentprijs bij de International Competition Pendim in Bulgarije. Hij soleerde bij

het Nationale Symfonie Orkest van de RAI in Turijn en trad in 2008 op met Peter Sadlo

in het RAI Auditiorium. Hij werd tevens uitgenodigd door Nebosja Jovan Zivkovic om te

spelen op het Slagwerkfestival in Novi Sad, Servië.

This year’s youngest participant Simone Rubino (1993) started his education at the “Giuseppe

studeert zij aan het conservatorium van Versailles, Parijs, bij Sylvio Gualda. Vassilena

won al diverse prijzen waaronder in 2006 de vierde prijs bij de Marimba Competition

te Linz en de tweede prijs bij zowel de Marimba Competition in Parijs als het ARD con-

cours in München in 2007. In 2008 won ze de World Marimba Competition in Stuttgart.

In 2009 werd Vassilena uitgeroepen tot ’Young musician of the Year’ in Bulgarije.

Vassilena Serafimova (1985) began her musical education at the age of six at the Music

Academy in Pleven, Bulgaria, with her father Simeon Serafimova. Since 2004 she has been

studying at the Conservatory of Versailles in Paris with Sylvio Gualda. Vassilena has been

awarded several prizes including the fourth at the Linz Marimba Competition 2006 as well as

Galdric Subirana (1989) startte met slagwerk op het conservatorium van Perpignan bij

Philippe Spiesser. In 2007 werd hij toegelaten op het CNSM te Lyon bij Jean Geoffroy.

In 2001 heeft hij de tweede prijs gewonnen op de Xylofoon Wedstrijd te Lempdes, in

De markt van Eindhoven vormt tijdens TROMP het toneel van een

unieke recordpoging: de langste drummarathon. De Amerikaanse

country- en rockdrummer Russ Prager brengt negen dagen dag én

nacht drummend door om zijn wereldrecord voor de vierde keer te

vestigen! Vanaf de Opening Night op 13 november tot en met de

afsluiting van TROMP vertoeft Prager in een glazen showroom in hartje

Eindhoven.

De laatste keer hield Prager het vijf dagen aan één stuk vol. Volgens

de regels van Guiness World Records verdient hij voor ieder uur

drummen vijf minuten pauze die hij mag opsparen en gebruiken voor

een bezoek aan het toilet of een powernap. Daarnaast vereist Guiness

dat hij meedrumt met een begeleidingsband waarbij hetzelfde

nummer maar één keer per 4 uur voorbij mag komen. Verder dienen

er 2 getuigen aanwezig te zijn die elke 4 uur wisselen en elke 4 uur

dient Prager een medische controle te ondergaan. Om kramp te

voorkomen wisselt hij zittend en staand drummen af.

The markt (market square) in Eindhoven will become the location of a

unique world record attempt during TROMP: the longest drum marathon.

The American country and rock drummer Russ Prager will spend nine days

and nights drumming continuously to secure his world record for the forth

time! From Opening Night on 13 November until the conclusion of TROMP,

Prager can be seen in a glass showroom in the heart of Eindhoven.

During his last attempt Prager managed to hold out for five days. According

to Guinness World Record rules, he earns five minutes pause for every hour

he drums, which he can then save up to visit the bathroom or take a power

nap. Guinness also insists that he plays together with an accompanying

band, whereby the same number should not be played more than once

every four hours. Two witnesses must be present, changing every four

hours and Prager must undergo a medical examination every four hours.

He alternates between sitting and standing in order to avoid cramps.

Op deze Opening Night beleeft u verder de première van ‘Mikrokosmos’ voor slagwerkkwartet, uitgevoerd door

de Duitse slagwerkgroep Elbtonal. Meesterpercussionist Colin Currie en TROMP Laureaten Yi-Ping Yang en Heath

Quartet openen de avond. En wel met de wereldpremière(!): ‘Mojave’ van de Amerikaanse componist Michael Torke.

Slagwerkster Tatiana Koleva weet vol passie een breed publiek te intrigeren voor

nieuwe muziek. ‘Explosive energy’, aldus The New York Times. Recent werd zij

uitgeroepen tot Musicus van het Jaar 2009 in haar thuisland Bulgarije.

Vandaag staat Koleva samen met Arnold Marinissen op het podium met organist

Jan Hage. Dat is typisch iets voor veelzijdige Hage, die graag buiten de gebaande

orgelpaden treedt. Hij componeerde de Suske en Wiske-suite en trad op tijdens de

najaarsmodeshow van Victor en Rolf.

Meesterpercussionist Colin Currie schetst samen met de jonge honden van het

ensemble Lunapark in drie werken een muzikaal portret van de veelzijdige componist

Torke. Gekozen is voor het swingende Song of Isaiah (2002), het zangstuk Four

Proverbs (1993) en het kleurrijke Music on the Floor (1992).

Michael Torke is one of America’s greatest composers. In 1996 The New York Times heralded

him as ‘the Ravel of his generation’. Quite an accurate comparison when you hear his

energetic rhythms and fine melodies. Minimal music interwoven with every genre possible,

from traditional classical to modern pop music. He wrote his first and most famous works,

Ecstatic Orange and Yellow Pages, in 1985 whilst still studying at Yale. His recent successes

include: a commission for the opening of the Disney Hall in Los Angeles, an opera for the

Metropolitan Opera in New York is planned and of course the world premiere of his

extraordinary work Mojave, commissioned by TROMP!

Master percussionist Colin Currie joins the youngsters of the Lunapark ensemble to sketch a

Michael Torke componeerde voor het opdrachtwerk ‘Mojave’ direct twee versies:

één voor solo slagwerk en orkest en één voor solo slagwerk en strijkkwartet. Een vrij

ongebruikelijke opdracht aan een componist. De titel van het werk ‘Mojave’ verwijst naar

de ‘Mojave Desert’, de bekende woestijn die Nevada en Californië doorkruist. De rijke

kleuringen van deze woestijn worden visueel zichtbaar gemaakt door de animaties van

de hand van Jaap Drupsteen. Deze vormgever is bekend van onder meer zijn ontwerpen

van het Nederlands paspoort, de laatste guldenbiljetten en de boekenbonnen. De parti-

tuur wordt letterlijk zichtbaar op een groot scherm achter het orkest. Kortom: een lust

voor oor én oog!

‘Mojave’ werd geschreven op verzoek van TROMP, met steun van de Eduard van Beinum

Stichting. De finale is live te volgen op Radio 4 via de themakanalen ‘Jong Klassiek’ en

‘Eigentijds’.

For the commissioned work ‘Mojave’, Michael Torke composed two versions: one for solo

percussion and orchestra and one for solo percussion and string quartet. A rather unusual

project for a composer. The title of the piece ‘Mojave’ refers to the ‘Mojave Desert’, the fa-

mous desert spanning Nevada and California. The rich colours of this landscape are brought

to life in the animations created by Jaap Drupsteen. This designer is known for his designs of

the Dutch passport, the last guilder banknotes, and the national book vouchers. The score will

be literally visible on the large screen behind the orchestra. In short: a feast for ear and eye!

‘Mojave’ was written at the request of TROMP, supported by the Eduard van Beinum

Foundation. The final can be followed live on Radio 4 via the theme channels ‘Young Classical’

and ‘Contemporary’.

vernieuwingen aan de Hammond van Carlo de Wijs, het

combineren van geluid met interactief beeld, de percus-

sie van Marnix Stassen en het werk van DJ Otimus, alias

Neels Smeekens.

KeyJay® was developed in 2006 as a result of the technolo-

gical developments of the Hammond by Carlo de Wijs, the

combination of sound with interactive image, the percussion

is samengesteld door Slagwerkkrant in samenwerking

The World Drummers Ensemble kent een lange traditie als

vast onderdeel van slagwerkfestival The Big Bang. Tijdens

A Bigger Bang wordt die traditie voortgezet. Speciaal voor

het festival zijn een aantal van de beste drummers ter we-

reld uitgenodigdvoor een uitdagend muzikaal treffen. Voor

deze versie van The World Drummers Ensemble smeden

slagwerkers uit Spanje, Cuba, de VS, Brazilië en Guinee

hun verschillende achtergronden tot een symbiose.

The World Drummers Ensemble has a long tradition as

permanent fixture of The Big Bang. This tradition is continued

during A Bigger Bang. Several of the very best drummers in

the world have been invited to join forces in a challenging

musical experience, especially for the festival. During this

version of The World Drummers Ensemble, a melting pot of

percussionists from Spain, Cuba, the USA, Brazil and Guinea

will bring their different backgrounds in symbiosis.

Hij staat sinds jaar en dag bekend als ’s werelds beste

djembéspeler. Mamady Keïta combineert techniek en

kracht met een grote dosis souplesse, elegantie en

gevoel voor performance; een messcherpe aanslag, een

keiharde sound. Hij pusht zijn percussiegroep Sewa Kan

tot grote hoogten en neemt het publiek daar genadeloos

in mee. De BBC documentairefilm Djembefola over zijn

terugkeer naar Guinee werd een grote hit. Tegenwoordig

neemt Keïta ook een fluitist/saxofonist, koraspeler én

twee begenadigde zangeressen mee.

He is well known as the worlds’ best djembe player. Mamady

Keïta combines technique and power with a large helping of

flexibility, elegance and a good feel for performance; a razor

sharp touch, a tough sound. He pushed his percussion group

Sewa Kan to great heights and mercilessly takes his audie-

nce along for the ride. The BBC documentary Djembefola,

depicting his return to Guinea, was a huge success. Keïta

now performs with a flautist/saxophonist, kora player and

two gifted vocalists.

Energieke rumba Catalana en andere flamencostijlen,

sieve baslijnen. Ofwel, hiphop flamenkillo, zoals de band-

leden van Ojos de Brujo het zelf noemen. De zang van

frontvrouw Marina ‘La Canillas’, de gitaren van Ramón

Giménez en de loops en scratches van Dj Panko zijn

typerend voor de hipste flamenco act uit Spanje. Ojos

de Brujo bestaat 10 jaar. Dat vieren ze met een nieuw

album én tijdens TROMP!

Or rather, hip-hop flamenkillo, as the members of Ojos de

Percussion students from the Fontys Conservatorium Tilburg

give lessons to more than 200 senior students from eight

secondary schools in Brabant. They will take part in work-

shops and an instant composing lesson from Michael Torke

at the Fontys Conservatorium and visit the TROMP final.

Fanfare dakar

Een intercultureel ‘Community Music’ project leidt tot

een spetterend concert. Met Aly N’diaye Rose Slagwerk-

ensemble (Senegal), schoolkinderen uit een viertal Eind-

hovense wijken, de TNT Harmonie Eindhoven, Harmonie

de Eendracht, het Koninklijk Woensels Muziekcorps en

leerlingen van Muziekschool de Hengel. Fanfare Dakar is

een project van Fort van de Verbeelding, de productie in

Eindhoven is in handen van Culturix.

An intercultural ‘Community Music’ project ends in a

Eindhoven, the TNT Harmonie Eindhoven, Harmonie de Een-

dracht, the Koninklijk Woensels Muziekcorps and students of

the Music School in Hengel. Fanfare Dakar is an initiative of

Fort van de Verbeelding. Culturix brings it to Eindhoven and

organises the production.

TROMP PeRcussiOn eindhOven

Het Tromp Concours & Festival heeft in de loop der

jaren een vaste Vriendenkring opgebouwd. Sinds

1986 heeft deze Vriendenkring een hecht verband

gekregen in de vorm van een stichting. Het doel van

deze stichting is vooral het stimuleren van de belang-

stelling voor TROMP PERCUSSION EINDHOVEN. Dit

gebeurt onder meer door het ter beschikking stellen

van geldprijzen en het coördineren van de jeugdjury.

De Vrienden vangen de deelnemers tijdens het

concours op en brengen hen bij gastgezinnen onder.

Voor € 15 per jaar (of € 25 met partner) bent u al

donateur van onze Vriendenkring (uiteraard zijn

hogere bedragen zeer welkom!). Uw bijdrage

betekent niet alleen een impuls voor het Eindhovense

TROMP PeRcussiOn eindhOven

The Tromp Music Competition & Festival has gathered a

group of loyal Friends over the years. In existence since

1986, this Society of Friends has strengthened their

bond by becoming a foundation. The primary aim of the

foundation is to increase interest in TROMP Percussion

Eindhoven. One way in which this is achieved is the

donation of several prizes and the coordination of the

youth jury. The Friends are primarily responsible for orga-

nising guest families with which the participants can stay

for the duration of the competition.

dOnORFor a yearly fee of just €15 (or €25 with partner) you can

become donor of our Society of Friends. (Of course

larger donations are always welcome!) Your contribution

not only supports the musical climate in Eindhoven, but

also provides you with attractive benefits during the

Tromp Music Competition and you are guest at the

annual exclusive Friends’ events.
