SPRING ISTEP+ TESTING

As this issue of the Trojan Trumpet reaches you, Clay Middle School students

have just completed the first portion of the Spring ISTEP+! Yes, you are

reading this correctly: Spring ISTEP+ comes to us in two installments! As you

know, ISTEP+ has moved from fall to spring testing times. From this point

forward it will be given during this time of year. What is ISTEP+? According

to IDOE, “The Indiana Statewide Testing for Education Progress-Plus

(ISTEP+) measures what students know and are able to do at each grade level

in core academic subjects. Based on Indiana’s Academic Standards, ISTEP+

provides a learning check-up designed to make sure students are on track and

to signal whether they need extra help.” The second portion of ISTEP+ will be

given during the testing window of April 27 to May 6. The first section of

ISTEP+ includes essay and short answer questions, while the second section of

STEP+ includes multiple choice questions. ISTEP+ , based on Indiana‘s

Academic Standards, (spring tests) cover:

English/language arts in grades 3-8; Mathematics in grades 3-8; Science in

grades 4 and 6; and Social Studies in grades 5-7. It replaces the current ISTEP+

Graduation Qualifying Exam (GQE) with Algebra I and English 10 exams

taken by students when they complete the corresponding course.

An important point to realize is that results for the 2009 spring ISTEP+ will be

released in August after passing scores have been set and adopted by the State

Board of Education. This will give us a new baseline for which to compare

tests scores. These spring tests are different from the fall test taken last

September. Results after this school year should be available to schools,

students, and parents before the end of the school year (2009-2010). That‘s the

plan! Hopefully we can get the results in time to make curriculum changes and

programs modifications for the next school year.

Sincerely,

Gary Huddleston Principal

From the PTO President Decina Paul, PTO President, 2008-2009 It is hard to believe that Spring Break is just around the corner, as well as the end of another school year! However, the PTO is still hard at work. Ilene Arends and her committee are gearing up this month to distribute products from our Otis Spunkmeyer fundraiser. A big thank you to everyone who participated in this sale. Our Leadership Breakfast chairmen, Lisa McGinnis, Dee Bloom, Karen Crull, and Sue Schmitz are organizing spring events for each grade. Ann White and her committee are finalizing the plans for the big 8th grade end of the year event. And, as always, many other committees such as Staff Appreciation, After School Study Hall and Bookstore (just to name a few) are always busy. Lastly, a huge thank you to Mondi Newland, our Nominating Chairman for her hard work slating the board for the 2009-2010. There are still opportunities available to volunteer. If your heart is leading you this way or you have questions about a position, please contact Mondi Newland ([email protected]). We will have the new slate posted on the Clay PTO Web site before the next general board meeting. The new directors as well as the 2009-2010 budget will be voted on at our next General Board Meeting on April 20th at 1 pm in the LGI room. This will be our final general board meeting of the school year. I highly encourage you to attend this very informative meeting. Have a great Spring Break! Upcoming PTO Events: April 20th - 1pm PTO General Board Meeting April 24th - 8th Grade ClayFest May 11th - 9am Incoming/Outgoing PTO Board of Directors Breakfast May 22nd - 8th Grade to Greatimes

We recently had Carmel Clay‘s first ―Green Schools Workshop,‖ with

representatives from most of Carmel Clay‘s schools. We are currently

sharing information about how and what each school recycles, working

toward a district-wide program. If you would like to join us for the

March workshop, please RSVP at the site below-we‘d love to have your

ideas for helping our schools become more ‗green‘! If you can‘t

attend but would like to receive updates, please contact Wendy

Where can I Recycle?

For information on where you can recycle many things locally (including

plastic bags, plastics #1-7…, phone books, TVs, e-waste, hazardous

waste, etc.), please go to www.carmelgreen.org & click on ―Resources.‖

Clay Middle School has a yellow & green Abitibi paper recycling bin in

front of the school for recycling newspapers, junk mail, catalogs,

magazines, office paper, fax paper, school paper, notebooks, folders &

small quantities of ―strip‖ shredded paper put into plastic bags. NOT

ACCEPTED are phone books, cardboard, and cross-cut and diamond-cut

shred (they accept 'spaghetti' but not 'confetti'). Staples are OK, as are

envelopes with clear plastic windows. Clay earns money from the paper

collected in the Abitibi bin and the paper is recycled into newsprint.

Prime Life Enrichment Center, 1078 SW 3rd Ave., next to Carmel

Ice Skadium has recycling behind their building for corrugated

cardboard, cardboard from cereal and soda boxes…(not egg cartons),

phone books, newspapers, white office paper & aluminum cans. http://

FYI: Through the Energy Savings Program, Carmel Clay Schools has

avoided costs during the 08-09 school year of $806,259 for a total since

1995 of $7,851,790! In January we avoided costs of $155,218. Together

this school year we have prevented the pollution of 877 cars or added the

equivalent of 1,815 acres of forest and prevented the burning of 1,956

tons of COAL, 4,889 tons CO2, 40,579 kg SO2, 16,134 kg NO.

Had we not had a conservation program these energy costs would have

had to been funded from the general fund (pay, benefits, etc.)

CARMEL RELAY FOR LIFE 2009

Carmel is hosting its fourth annual Relay for Life at the high school football stadium in June. A Relay for

Life is a 24-hour event where team members take turns walking or running around the track for the entire 24

hours. The teams raise money for the American Cancer Society‘s fight against every kind of cancer. The

event starts at 12 pm on Saturday, June 6th, and ends at 12 pm on Sunday, June 7th. Clay has had a staff

team every year, and student teams the last two years. We are encouraging students to participate again this

year, with parental support and supervision.

We are recruiting teams now. A team consists of 8-15 people. So the more people on the team, the less each

person has to walk or run during the 24-hour period. We would like to see residents of the different

neighborhoods put together teams for the Relay. Some teams then have neighborhood functions (such as

garage sales, bake sales, car wash, block party) to raise money for their teams.

Another way for teams to raise money is to sell luminaria. These are sold for $10 each and can be purchased

in support of someone fighting cancer, in honor of someone who has survived cancer, or in memory of

someone who lost their fight against cancer. Some students in Clay‘s Art classes will be decorating

luminaria bags again this year. There will be a luminaria ceremony at the Relay when the candles are lit and

the names of everyone supported, honored, or remembered are read. If you are not involved with a team, but

would like to purchase any luminaria, forms are available in the Nurse‘s Office at Clay or Mohawk Trails.

We also need volunteers to help with various activities both before and on the day of the Relay. If you would

like to form a team, be on a team, volunteer, donate, or purchase luminaria, please contact Mary Harshbarger

at Clay Middle School by phone 844-7251 or e-mail [email protected]. The next relay meeting is

Wednesday, April 1, at 7 pm at the Hilton Garden Inn. Please go to the Web site at www.relayforlife.org/

carmelin to register or for more information.

MENINGITIS & Tdap CLINIC INFORMATION

Meningococcal (MEN-IN-JO-KOK-AL) meningitis is a serious bacterial infection that can kill a young adult in less

than 48 hours. It is very difficult to diagnose and treat because it begins with flu-like symptoms. Of those who

survive, 1 in 5 will suffer permanent disabilities such as amputation of fingers, toes, arms or legs, severe scarring, brain

damage, or hearing loss. YOU can protect your children with a simple vaccination.

High school seniors are strongly encouraged to get vaccinated BEFORE attending college in the fall. Recent studies

indicate that college freshmen have a six-times greater risk of contracting this life-threatening disease. In 2005, the

American Council on Immunization Practices made recommendations that children 11 years of age and up be

vaccinated. It is especially important for students in this age group who attend summer camp to receive this

vaccination.

This year the Tdap vaccine for tetanus-diphtheria-pertussis will also be available during the meningitis clinic. This is

the recommended vaccine for adolescents 11 years and up. It has been shown to decrease the incidence of pertussis,

also known as Whooping Cough, by 90%. Tetanus boosters are recommended every 10 years but can be given no

closer than five years apart.

A clinic will be held at Carmel High School on Thursday, April 23 from 3 pm to 5 pm

in the Community room.

To ensure that enough vaccine will be on-site, pre-registration is required. Students or parents can download a pre-

registration form from the VNS Web site (www.vnsi.org), under Flu/Meningitis in the VNS Services drop down menu;

pick up a form at the school clinic; or contact VNS at 722-8299, extension 120. The cost is $140 for the Meningitis

vaccine and $55 for Tdap. Information sheets and registration forms will also be available in the clinic offices.

PENNIES FOR PATIENTS We recently wrapped up our annual Pennies for Patients fundraising campaign,

which was held February 2—February 13. Clay students raised a total of $12,

642.88 for the Leukemia and Lymphoma Society! This is just $300 short of last

year‘s total. Fundraising activities included a raffle for prizes such as iTunes

cards, an autographed Pacers binder and movie passes among other items, the

sale of Valentine‘s Day Suckers, Lyrics for Leukemia where students could pay

for the privilege of listening to their iPods/MP3 players during their lunch, and a raffle for Pacers tickets.

The week was capped off with the Big Game VII, which featured the 8th grade boys basketball team versus a

team of Clay staff and faculty. The teachers won the game 63-48. The top three Math classes in each grade

won a pizza party, lunch from Jimmy John‘s and a Dairy Queen ice cream cake party, in that order. The top

Math class has also qualified for a visit from Gary Brackett of the Indianapolis Colts if Clay Middle School

is the top fundraising school in the state. Way to go Clay!

Dear Clay Parents,

Due to safety concerns the Clay Administration would like to re-emphasize our drop off and pick up

procedures. Student drop off and pick up will be at the far east entrance along the sidewalk in front

of door #5. DO NOT park and allow your student to navigate through the parking lot. Thank you

for your cooperation as we want to ensure the safety of all our students. Also if you drop your

student off after 7:45 you will need to escort them to the front entrance and sign them in.

C. J. Glander

Assistant Principal

Encourage your preteen to use a journal

to plan for the future

Your child is in middle school, and it is not necessary—or even realistic—to expect her to know what she

wants to do for the rest of her life. But it is realistic for her to have some sense of what she likes and what she

doesn‘t, what she is good at and what she struggles with. Dr. Mel Levine, one of America‘s foremost experts on learning, says that it‘s important for children to begin

thinking this way once they get to sixth grade. He says a child who knows herself has a good head start on the

future. Keeping a journal can be a great way for your child to get to know herself better. In the journal, have your

child answer these questions:

―What are my strengths in school?‖ and ― What are my weaknesses in school?‖

―What do I love doing outside school?‖ and ―What am I good at doing outside school?‖ Dr. Levine calls

these special areas of strength and interest ―affinities‖ and says they are key to a child‘s success.

―What do I like to learn about or would I like to learn more about?‖

―What is important to me right now?‖ ―Do I prefer to work with others or alone?‖ ―Am I happier indoors or

outdoors?‖

You child should update the journal every few months. Differences will happen and are important to note.

But look for things that stay the same—these trends could provide clues to your child‘s future success. Reprinted with permission from the March 2008 issue of Parents Still make the difference!® (Middle School

Edition) newsletter. Copyright © 2008 The Parent Institute®, a division of NIS, Inc. Source: Mel Levine,

8th Graders Field Trip To Finance Park

Many adult volunteers needed

This year each 8th grade student will be participating in an exciting program at Junior Achievement called Finance Park.

The classroom curriculum supporting the program introduces students to personal financial responsibility and important

life skills. Your son or daughter will have an opportunity to apply what he or she has learned in a realistic setting during

our visit to the Finance Park facility. We need an adult for every six students attending JA to facilitate sound financial

decisions during the field trip, so we need your help to make it a successful and educational trip. Training will be

provided the same morning of the field trip so the commitment is only one day. Please contact the appropriate person

Noteworthynews from the band room

We are very excited that Clay Middle School will be hosting the ISSMA Organizational Contest for Band, Choir and

Orchestra this year on March 20 and 21.

We will need a great deal of help to host many bands, orchestras, and choirs (as well as our own groups) from the area as

they compete that weekend. Please be on the lookout for volunteer opportunities and a complete schedule for your

child’s band to come home in early March.

More than 100 Clay Band Students competed in the ISSMA Solo and Ensemble Contest at Westfield High School on

February 7th. Of the events entered, there were 59 Gold ratings and 15 Silver ratings awarded to groups and individuals.

CONGRATULATIONS to all the students who participated! GREAT JOB!

If you missed the try-on nights for band and would still like to join, please contact Mrs. Pote at [email protected] or

Mrs. Allen at [email protected] to schedule a personal appointment.

Attending this ―Meet the Coach Night‖ is

undoubtedly the single-most important thing you

as a parent can do to support your son or

daughter. It is during this meeting that you will

hear firsthand about the team‘s rules, philosophy

of coaching and the athletics program,

sportsmanship expectations and much more.

Remember that each coach, team and season is

different. Please plan to attend even if you were

present at a meeting earlier this school year.

Don‘t miss this very important evening. Mark

your calendar now and plan to attend.

I am looking forward to a great spring season of

Trojan Athletics!
