I started The Rhythmic Lounge in December 2010. At its start, it was a fairly simple website with the purpose of giving people a place to promote their talents and network. I had no idea that less than two years later it would transform into something much bigger. The website then underwent a complete revamp in July 2011, with a brand new look and the addition of many new features, including the creation of The Rhythmic Lounge Radio. Following suit, the radio started out as merely a 24/7 stream of hand-picked music submitted by talented musicians from the website but is now an integral part of the company. Listeners from all over the world tune in regularly to hear the wide variety of music, as well as the

educational, musical and talk-radio shows that we now host.

The radio’s success has only made me realize The Rhythmic Lounge could take me in new directions everyday rather than the other way around, which is why a digital magazine seemed like the next step. I’m incredibly proud to present to you hardworking artists and entertainers in this magazine and on the site, so enjoy!

Essince (TRL): How did you get started with music? Were you an artist or DJ first? Sushi Lor: Growing up I was an active child. I participated in theatre arts, dance, and played basketball, which then transitioned into music as it is used for everything. I began rapping in high school and released many singles as a way to star guest perform in the club scene. After chasing DJs to play my records, I decided that it was smart to become one and play my own records. That

was one of the best decisions I've made with music thus far. Essince (TRL): Being Thailand - born but raised in the US, what kind of music did you grow up listening to? SL: My nationality is Hmong. I was born in Thailand for about two years before we came over to the United States. I grew up in Milwaukee, Wisconsin and attended schools that were predominantly of African American descents in the urban city. I was exposed to hip hop music through my friends and fell in love with the culture that it embraces. 8 www.therhythmiclounge.com

Essince (TRL): You've traveled a lot between the Midwest and West Coast. What are the differences in the scenes from the LA/Bay area to Chicago or Milwaukee? SL: Milwaukee is a really small city. There are only so many clubs and places to go. The hip-hop radio station also doesn't give full energy, which reflects in their nightlife scene. As a tourist or out of town person, the first thing that a person does when landing in a new city is turning on the radio. When I expanded out to Chicago and the west to California, the music choices that were played made me want to dance and go out all the time, regardless of the time of day. Essince (TRL): How do you use social media to help your music/career? SL: Wow. Social media has come a long way. I would say it is the best thing that has helped music artists progress exponentially, and any business at that aspect. I simply post a lot of pictures. A lot of GOOD pictures. Every time I go out for a gig or even hanging out with friends, I make sure to capture a photo for Instagram and Facebook. The more people see that you are an active person in the field that you are known for, that's when you gain loyal followers. It is important to stick with your brand and not go outside of your personality because it can confuse your audience. Essince (TRL): What's something people don't know about you? Any hidden talents? SL: I am a preschool teacher. I teach from birth to 3rd graders and it is an amazing career field. Young children are so aware of everything that's going on. Often times they just don't have the language to express those thoughts and feelings. I've incorporated a lot of music into my teaching as well. My kids and I have done poetry reading during literacy time, which is reading basic poetry to hip hop instrumentals. I recommend this idea to any teacher to allow integration of the children's comfort zone to the school setting.

Essince (TRL): What are you working on to end the year? SL: I am working on opening a children's learning center. I love children and the only way that I can teach at a faster rate is to have my own facility under my monitor. I'll give it another year before this happens. THREE WEEKS ONE SUMMER

WITH THE MARMALADE In 2013, world renowned rock photographer, Nick Elliott, spent a busy Summer shooting the 60s hit makers, The Marmalade, for the band’s project Penultimate. Penultimate marked a new era for the band with the release of a CD, DVD, and vinyl record with promotional booklet featuring Nick’s images throughout. Now the collection of Nick’s stunning images have also been published as a limited edition fine art photographic book. Entitled Three Weeks One Summer, the book is a 132 page, high quality, hard-backed publication and features unseen, intimate images of The Marmalade shot over that period.

Strictly limited to 250 copies worldwide and signed by Nick, amongst the images included in the pages of Three Weeks One Summer are the band backstage preparing for a show, onstage performing, enjoying some down-time on location, and also meeting and greeting their fans. The book is the third publication by the iconic rock photographer, who has worked in the music industry for over 20 years. His images have frequently been featured on album artwork as well as being published extensively across the media. The artists that Nick has photographed are at the top of their profession and in, addition to The Marmalade, includes artists such as Metallica, Iron Maiden, Whitesnake, Status Quo, Motorhead, Robert Plant and ZZ Top, to name a few amongst his archive.

Talking about the release of the Three Weeks One Summer, Nick said: “This is a true milestone in my career – to be able to create the images for the content of this book and produce it under my own publishing company, has made a very big, lifetime ambition come true. “Shooting the Penultimate project with such a great bunch of guys was just wonderful. It was a great period of

time to work on something so special plus…it was a big barrel of fun!” Nick first met leader singer in The Marmalade, Sandy Newman, in Nashville in 2010 when they were both working on independent projects in the city. Penultimate was the opportunity for them to work together after that initial meeting. Sandy commented: “Nick has brought a masterful imagery to Penultimate and delivered, down to the last detail, everything he described to the band on our first meeting to hear his ideas. “It is a pleasure, and indeed an honour, to be photographed by someone who can put you at ease. He instils a trust in you I have never come across before.” Known for his unique ability to capture the true essence of the artists’ live performance, Nick’s work is also in demand as fine art and has exhibited in galleries across the UK and Europe, and is currently in discussion to show his images in the USA. Singer, Song Writer, Rapper, and Actor Trevon L. Rubbins was born June 30, 1979 in Lafayette, LA and raised in Galveston and Houston, TX. Trevon grew up without a father so he was very much influenced by the street life through Drug Lords and Pimps in the projects of Oleander Homes in Galveston, TX. Growing up in the projects it was easy to get in trouble; and Trevon had his temptations. His sheer determination to have the best in life and the foundation his family had in church always kept him out of harms way.

As a teenager Trevon and his family moved to Houston, TX. Houston provided him with more opportunities to explore his talents and expand his gifts. Just as the city provided opportunities there were also twice as many distractions. His mom tried to kept him grounded and by God’s grace he was able to be productive and successful.

In his early 20’s Trevon studied under his mentor Frank Caldwell, a gospel singer, which taught him how to take his vocals and his singing to another level. Naturally charismatic Trevon was also tapped by his pastor to speak to youth involved in gangs and to help financially strapped individuals pay their utilities. He has traveled throughout Ohio in many outreach programs in prisons.

Trevon has amassed a number of credits to his name including a stint as a semi-pro basketball player for Columbus Italian Red Dogs. His credentials in the Entertainment Industry include being a dance member of a group called Remnant. Trevon just completed his debut movie role in produced by Thada Catalon and starring Chico Benymon (Half & Half); Just Brittany; Courtney Cameron (Jaguar For The Love of Ray J) among others. Trevon’s rap name is “Blue Flame” and his R&B name is “Treyology”. He's embarking on his next mission in life which is to give his talents and gifts of floetry and the story of his life to those that may feel like they stuck in life and have no way out. Trevon is from the streets but choose to use his story to give hope to those that feel trapped in the game! The Rhythmic Lounge: For those who aren’t familiar with you, please tell us in your own words...who is Cardye and what is it that you want people to understand about what you do? Cardye: I want to celebrate relationships in a new light! I feel that R&B has strayed away from its roots. The genre used to speak of unconditional love and the pursuit of it! I want to bring back the qualities of love that are easily forgotten, or tainted by one hitter quitters. I want to showcase the sexy side of relationships by pulling from real experiences. It's not all pretty, maybe a little grungy at times, like the guitar! But at the end of the day, you know where you want to be. I speak for the man that is sure of himself and knows what he wants out of life! Overall, spreading great music and love! TRL: What level of influence did growing up in North Carolina have on your pursuit in music and entertainment? Cardye: I believe North Carolina is one of the biggest melting pots of the country! Many people from the Deep South, Mid West, and North all seem to gather to this state (The middle ground). So I was exposed to a lot of musical genres. From Bluegrass to Gospel, then back around to R&B and Hip Hop! The vast numbers of musicians here also influenced me to get out and grab my own instruments! I've met more musicians here then inspiring artists! TRL: You are not the average 2015 R&B artist. What truly sets you apart? Cardye: I would have to say my original sound and lyrics! The music is what reaches the listener. I want to connect with my listeners like no one else. I tend to write more about real life situations and experiences that people can relate to. At the end of the day, it's just you and your significant other. If I can help set the mood, or give you something to ride to while you're going out! Mission accomplished! I want to create memories. That's what sets me apart! TRL: Have you ever considered expanding your talent into other areas of music and entertainment, such as producing etc? Cardye: I'm always trying to push myself! I am a true guitarist at heart, so production was always in the picture! Being a part of the entire creative process is what I crave as an artist! I was blessed enough to do some guitar work on Trey Songs album "Chapter 5" Interlude 4 U. I see more opportunities like this in the future...God willing! TRL: Are there any upcoming events or projects that you’d like to mention? Cardye: I'm really excited about this year in general! I took some time off to have my daughter and now It's time to get back to work! I've already released a single this year under my label Urban Sexy Entertainment called Wants & Needs. I'll be dropping another single mid August! This will lead up to an event presented by U.S.E. called The Raleigh Stand Up Concert! This event has a great roster of up and coming artist from North Carolina! After that, we are looking to release a full EP in the late fall!


Marion'Forget'Ontario, Canada ' My dad who was a draftsman, had an unique and inspiring way to channel the energies of a hyper little girl, he would hand me a huge piece of drawing paper and some pencils so i could draw while he worked on his current project. Since, i cannot remember a time without a pad or lose paper and pencil as my constant companion. Though i did not have any formal art instruction until high school. I was exposed to arts with books and material and crafts, with my mom who designed and made craft ideas from mini Santa's to fancy embroideries. The art and creativity was a big part of my childhood.

After starting another art course, the demands and rewards of motherhood saw to it that it was put on the back burner but always simmering. When i wasn't doing art, i was always doing some kind of creative activity from model building to crochet, designing my own

patterns. in time, when circumstance allowed, i went back to school. One diploma at Academy of Learning for Pc Support Specialist, then the second at Niagara College For Graphic Fundamentals And Fine Arts. My influences range from Neolithic to 19th century impressionist art on up to present day. You will see i have taken to the impressionist period and can see the influences in many pieces of my work. Little incidents in just living an ordinary life spark a creative drive to a new painting or piece that emerges from that speck of inspiration. The past 4-5 years has been both a blossoming of output on a mooded commercial success. The critical acclaim spurs my creative drive to continuously push back the boundaries of my art. I cannot know where my art will take me but i do aspire to exhibit in places like Toronto, Montreal, Vancouver as well as stepping out of Canada to enter the international art world with a first stop to New York City. My ultimate goal is to become an internationally known artist. Matt Lande, an alternative recording artist from Portland, has launched a

crowd funding campaign on Indiegogo to raise funds to complete his new

album, “Glow". The album contains the song “Looking Down,” which honors

two friends of Lande’s who passed away from cancer, late last year. The song

was written to help raise funds for cancer research and to help families of

cancer patients. The proceeds of the Indigogo campaign will be used for mixing,

mastering, and promotion of the album.

Lande has been compared to the smooth vocalist, Darren Hayes (Savage

Writing songs is always been a great way of expressing yourself. Many creative entrepreneurs are seeking to get into the songwriting field in which there are unlimited opportunities.

Most writers do this in order to secure entertainment income through writing song's for independent semi national and major artists alike.

One of the first things to consider is to write right! Songs are not just mere expression feeling or poetry.

Songs are made up of timing, melodies, phrases and story lines that inherit different rhyme schemes and patterns.

While keeping this in mind please consider that songwriting is also a very spiritual art form.

Although songwriting often times uses paper and pen to deliver its message, it comes from the realm of the unseen.

The spiritual universe is at work here; nature itself has positioned you to place your internal view on canvas through paper and pen.

Please do consider the universal language of songwriting which is speaking to the world and not us.

The expression of universal language is love!

It is determined that the first song that any song writer writes normally would be a love song, in fact sometimes songwriters get stuck in the area of only being able to produce love songs and unfortunately many of them have never graduated to creating songs with concepts, subject-matter, themes and storylines. In addition, for those who do believe, God is love; therefore the spiritual value of our personal relationship to spiritually is how we interpret God's love to humanity through our consciousness know as art form. This I would consider to be the golden rule to songwriting. Do not pervert the true meaning of the song by using useless words that are meaningless and has no integrity to its value which distorts, confuses and compromises the authentic subject matter of the lyrics. We must recognize the simplicity of what it is to be realistic in making the song feel real as though the listener is truly there. Using words that are out of context of the previous line spoken many times leads to the death of a song at that particular point there a song could take a whole new direction which often loses the ear. Oftentimes statements can be somewhat hypnotic almost as a hypnotist saying watch the watch and keep saying repetitious phrases over and over with gloomy lines and gloomy conversation.

Ron Handy Montgomery, AL

The multi-instrumentalist, Ron Handy, was born and reared in Montgomery, Alabama. He began playing guitar in grade school. In junior and senior high school, Ron began to concentrate primarily on Alto Saxophone and he participated in various county and state honor bands. During high school, Ron not only played in the marching, symphonic, and jazz bands, but he also arranged and composed music for these bands. This pivotal period in his life influenced Ron’s decision to pursue a career in music. After high school graduation, Ron enrolled in college at Alabama State University, where he earned a music degree with honors. Presently, Ron is employed at Alabama State University in the Department of Music. Ron has been the recipient of the ASU President’s Excellence Award and he was inducted into the Lanier High School Hall of Fame (his high school alma mater) for creative musicianship and service to the community. He has also received numerous other awards for music and for community service. The Rhythmic Lounge: Was there an "aha" moment that made you say, "I want to be a musician"?

Ron Handy: Coming from a musical household where everyone in the house played an instrument and/or sang definitely had an impact on me, but my “aha” moment came when I was in high school. I had a wonderful band director, Farrell Duncombe, who saw some potential in me and allowed me to go as far as I wanted to go under his guidance. I was the saxophone section leader and, as a teenager, was allowed to arrange musical selections and conduct them in rehearsals. The fire within me was raging once I stood in front of the band for the first time to conduct my very first marching band arrangement (laughs). Honestly, it didn’t turn out that great but Mr. Duncombe encouraged me to keep at it. I was so determined to practice that Mr. Duncombe asked the school principal if I could have a key to the band room. I think he was tired of me “bugging” him (laughs). His request was granted and I was able to practice in the band room at any time. I loved it and my desire to be a good musician (along with being a responsible young man) was of “high priority.”

TRL: You play several instruments! How did that come about?

RH: Wow! That’s a good question! As I stated earlier, my family had instruments around the house all the time and it sparked my interest to see how each one operated. Several years ago I worked with John Gibbs, a fantastic musician who owns a music store here in Montgomery. Whenever I was in the store I would watch customers come in to purchase different instruments. To my surprise and amazement, John would demonstrate each instrument that was requested. I don’t mean “tinker” with it (smile). He could “really” play every instrument that he put his hands on…WELL (laughs). It was great for me to see a person do that and he was gracious enough to show me some techniques on different instruments. I was getting into multi-track recording at the time and I had to lay all of the tracks myself. Whew! During those days I didn’t have digital recorders to work with, so everything went to tape. It really helped my musicianship because I had to literally “perform” every part in its entirety. I continue to work like that now because I get a better feel for the music by actually “playing” the parts separately.”

TRL: Why was going to college and getting a degree in music important to you?

RH: First of all, both of my parents are retired educators and going to college was always stressed to me, along with my siblings, as a way to position ourselves for a better life. I was so into music in high school that my mind was made up about having music as a major. I really wanted to learn everything that I could about music and possibly teach one day. My saxophone instructor in college, Dr. Laurence Hayes, played a major role in convincing me to soak up all of the knowledge that I could from him. Believe me, he had a wealth of knowledge and I was encouraged to go beyond my musical barriers. The music was so difficult that I would spend 4 to 6 hours a day working on various exercises. I once asked, “Why are you giving me such difficult pieces to learn?” I soon found out that he was planning to retire and I am now in his old office at Alabama State University. Talk about irony (smile). Attending college and getting a degree in music has been extremely beneficial to me. I owe a major debt of gratitude to all of my former teachers for the seeds that they’ve sown in me. May God bless them all!

TRL: You've performed numerous times as a solo act. How challenging is that?

RH: That’s a great question! The solo act came about as the result of my maturing as a multi-instrumentalist and producer. I owe a lot of my decision to perform solo to Dr. George Shaw, a Long Beach, California based musician/producer/educator whom I met several years ago. He literally took me under his wing and instructed me on the “ins” and “outs” of studio recording. He’s a guru when it comes to studio gear and he’s an awesome trumpet player. Well, I had a performance coming up for a festival and was working so hard that I didn’t have time to pull a band together for rehearsals. I was about to cancel the engagement when Dr. Shaw says, “Do it yourself!” His statement changed everything for me and I began to perform with or without a band. I spent a great deal of time learning several tunes on a variety of instruments to enhance my “live” performances. Performing live with a band is wonderful and I enjoy that aspect tremendously. The challenge of performing “live” on a “track date” concert is that it requires a lot more energy. Since I’m performing the instrumental parts on the tracks, I always think about my energy level and which instrument(s) I will be playing “live” to keep things fresh and interesting. It’s truly a challenge, but I enjoy it!

TRL: Do you remember the first time you heard yourself on the radio?

RH: Yes I do remember the first time I heard a selection that I’d recorded in the studio on the radio (laughs). Back in the day, I was always working on stuff (smile). A good friend of mine and music business mentor, Steve Myers, would always ask me… “Are you working on some material?” I would always say “yes” and he would tell me to get it to him as soon as I was done. After several months of asking the same question and getting the same answer from me, I reluctantly gave Steve a tape to check out over the weekend. I didn’t think it was ready, but he took it and returned it to me on the following Monday. He told me he liked it and I said “thanks, but I’ll finish it soon”. To my surprise, I was driving and listening to our campus radio station (WVAS FM 90.7) when I heard one of my selections on the radio. You see, Steve Myers was the station manager at the time and he’d copied the tape and put it on the air. I guess he was tired of “waiting on me” and decided I was ready (Laughs). As I think about it, I’m glad he did that. I would probably still be “getting ready” today (smile)! Thanks, Steve!

TRL: How did the interesting concept of the "Killing Me Softly" video on YouTube come about?

RH: The “Killing Me Softly” track and video came about very quickly. The vocalist that I work with, Christina Mims, has always loved that song and wanted to perform it. I laid the instrumental tracks for her to rehearse with. She liked it and went on the computer to make sure she had all of the lyrics correct. We were not really intending to “record” the song at that time. It was really just a “fun” thing. She looked over the lyrics for a few minutes and said…”Hey, I want to lay some vocal tracks over what you’ve done.” She proceeded to lay the lead and the harmony tracks in one take each… top to bottom. Wow! As we were listening back to the performance Darrick Long (an ASU student) walked into my office and said… “I really like that and I have an idea.” Darrick takes his iPhone out of his pocket and says…”let’s make a video”! The footage on the iPhone was shot right then. As we listened to the lyrics of this great Charles Fox – Norman Gimbel composition, Darrick (along with his twin brother Eric) had a concept to convey a unique message through the video. The world recently commemorated the 60th Anniversary of the Selma to Montgomery Voting Rights March and State Senator Quinton Ross played the video for visiting dignitaries during their visit to Montgomery. The video was met with a rousing ovation of approval and we are all very proud to have been a part of it. We’ve received many positive emails and texts from around the world from those who have viewed the video on YouTube! Christina (a gifted vocalist) and Darrick (who also designed my website) are truly talented individuals and I love working with them. Thank you, TRL!


Album Reviews Lightfarer- The Light Fandango by William Kryjak Rating: ★ ★ ★

Lightfarer’s new album, The Light Fandango, is not the electronic music album you might expect to hear in the year 2015. There are no pounding house beats, huge drops, or someone imploring you to let them “take a selfie”. Rather the synthesized (and not) instruments act to create a more psychedelic, trance-like sound. But perhaps it is wrong to even try to categorize the music. Each track is different, and the commitment to avoid convention allows for an explorative,

albeit wandering at times, effort that is an enjoyable listening experience. Producer Mark Forster is Lightfarer. Based in the North East of England, his musical roots go back several decades. Starting out on guitar and bass, he played in local bands covering a variety of musical styles. He only started exploring the world of electronic music in the past few years, but the musicianship and ear he developed over the years has allowed for seamless transition. On his newest album, The Light Fandango, he works in a wide variety of genres, never afraid to try something new. However the album’s strength is also its weakness. The creativity that allows Forster this freedom can also make the EP feel random at times. In addition, this broad ambition seems to have limited the focus that could have really pushed some songs to the next level. On the track “Slowly Up the Hill”, the foundation is there, but the beat is simple almost to a fault. It would be nice to have kept building on this idea. Forster himself says that “electronic music isn't just about Kraftwerk and the 80s”, and he’s right. With the power to drum up basically any sound imaginable, there is an endless palette for artists to work from. For The Light Fandango, the ability and the passion are clearly there.
