Keith MagnusonThe Inspiring Lie and Times o a Beloved BlackhawkDOUG FELDMANN

    FOREWORD BY CLIFF KOROLL

One o the most popular Chicago Blackhawks o all time, deenseman Keith Magnuson was raised on the raw,

rough traditions o hockey in western Canada. Magnuson captained the University o Denver to its second

straight NCAA championship in the spring o 1969; by autumn, he would take the ice in the storied Chicago

Stadium as a rookie or the Blackhawks. Joining stars such as Bobby Hull, Stan Mikita, and Tony Esposito,

Magnuson soon became the much-needed policeman or the team. In his rookie season (1969-70), he broke

the Blackhawks team record or penalty minutes in a season with 213; the ollowing year, he eclipsed the leaguemark with 291 as the Blackhawks made their way back to the Stanley Cup Finals.

Over the course o the next several seasons, Magnuson and the Blackhawks would, time and time again, all

painully short o their Stanley Cup aspirations. Nonetheless, Magnusons leadership qualities led to his being

named captain o the team. As veteran sportswriter Bob Verdi described Magnuson upon his retirement rom

the Blackhawks, There have been many ner athletes in

Chicago, but not one ner person.

On December 15, 2003, Magnuson was in the Toronto area

to attend the uneral o Keith McCreary. While riding in a

car driven by another ormer player, Rob Ramage, Magnu-

son was killed when the car veered over the center line andstruck an oncoming vehicle. Mourned by thousands at his

visitation in suburban Chicago the ollowing week, Magnu-

sons number was retired by the Blackhawks in 2008.

Written with the ull support o Magnusons wie and chil-

dren, Doug Feldmanns biography o this Chicago icon is an

insightul, thrilling, and poignant tribute to a true hockey

THE ARCHITECT OF A RISING FOOTBALL POWER

Art Briles: Looking UpMy Journey rom Tragedy to TriumphNICK EATMAN

    FOREWORD BY ROBERT GRIFFIN III

Looking Up is the biography o Baylor head ootball coach Art Briles, one o the most highly regarded young

coaches in college ootball. With an introduction by Coach Briles, and a oreword by ormer Heisman Trophy

winner and now star quarterback or the Washington Redskins Robert Grin III, the book chronicles this ris-

ing stars lie and successul coaching career.

At the age o 20, Briles lost his parents in a tragic car accident as they were en route to one o his college

games. Devastated by the loss o his role models, Briles had to nd a way to pick himsel up o the mat.

Was this tragedy to be used as an excuse and a crutch? Or would he use it as motivation to propel him on his

journey to reach the destination hed always dreamed o?

Briles chose the latter course. Beore he joined the college coaching ranks, he wasnt just a successul high

school coach, he was more o a legend, winning our state

titles in Stephenville, where they hadnt even made the play-

os in the previous 37 years.

He later became the head coach at Houston, which had

considered shutting down its ootball program not long

beore Briles arrived. Ater our bowl appearances in a ve-year span, he let or Baylor, another struggling program that

hadnt won a bowl game in 15 years.

Not only has Briles taken the Bears bowling the last three

seasons, but his guidance led Robert Grin III to a Heisman

Trophy in 2011. Baylor ootball has never been more relevant

than it is right now, a trend that certainly began when Briles

and RGIII arrived on the Waco campus just ve years ago.

Buckeye RebirthUrban Meyer, an Inspired Team, and a New Era at Ohio StateBILL RABINOWITZ

Urban Meyer was thrown a curveball on December 20, 2011. The two-time national champion as Floridas

head coach had accepted the job at Ohio State just weeks earlier. Most believed that the universitys sel-

imposed sanctions or rules violations that led to ormer head coach Jim Tressels resignation beore the 2011

season would be enough to ward o harsher penalties. Instead, the NCAA banned the Buckeyes rom post-

season play in 2012. Meyers frst team was ineligible or the Big Ten Championship Game and would not be

    competing in a bowl game.

Meyer aced the challenge o convincing recruits and seniors to commit to the program despite the ban, then

motivating a group o players who knew there was no goal to reach beyond the Nov. 24 season fnale against

Michigan. What ollowed was one o the most remarkable seasons in Ohio States 123-year history. Behind

sophomore quarterback Braxton Miller and a deense anchored by seniors John Simon and Travis Howard,

Ohio State dominated the Big Ten and fnished a perect 12-0. Following the season, the Buckeyes were

ranked third in the country by the Associated Press and stood as the nations only undeeated team.

In Buckeye Rebirth, Bill Rabinowitz o the Columbus Dispatch takes readers inside this historic season and the

beginning o a new era at Ohio State. Rabinowitz reveals

the debate within Meyers amily that preceded his

acceptance o the job and the conversation that convinced

Meyer to retain 2011 interim head coach Luke Fickell as

an assistant. He takes readers into recruits living roomsand inside the grueling spring practices that put a stop to

any divisions and immaturity within the team. Fans will go
