Triple Play Program Highlights

Commerce City

• Participating in a 5k fun run at the end of the summer to

provide the youth in the program an end of the summer

celebration.

• Providing physical activity options that the youth expressed

interest in to encourage participation. For example: soccer

club, tennis clinics, and fundamental basketball camp.

• The Iron Chef/Master Chef weekly healthy cooking

competition.

• Planting and maintaining garden that provides youth and

families fresh ingredients for meals.

Triple Play Program Highlights

Some of our highlights was having 3 former Olympic

Champions interact directly with the kids. An important best

practices is to be prepared & give demonstrations. Staff

walk with the kids. Kids have a healthy snack non-cooking

class teaching snacks without using the stove or

microwave. A ribbon w/ medal being given at a closing

dinner. The key points are simple; Make it fun, competitive,

and remember if you feed them …they will come.

World Fit Program

The program is held at each of our 10 sites where youth are encouraged by an

Olympic Medalist who educates the youth on the importance of Being Fit, Healthy

Eating, & having a Healthy Lifestyle . Hundreds of kids are in this walking program.

Every child participating gets a gold medal.

• Our most notable highlights since implementing the Triple Play program have been,

• Increasing member’s daily physical activity.

• All members are participating in at least 60 minutes of physical activity every day at the Club.

• Overall increase of knowledge of Healthy Habits.

• Our members are learning and understanding why making healthy decisions and implementing physical

activity is important.

• Increased intake of fruits and vegetables.

• Thanks to the grant money we have be able to supplement our Food Bank snack and lunch program

with fresh fruits and veggies. Showing members that healthy food options can be delicious too!

Instead of the usual pretzels and crackers our members enjoy having fresh watermelon for

snack.

Nice and cool floor hockey

Here in Arizona we don’t let the heat stop us from having fun and

getting exercise. With temperatures reaching over 1000 and not

having an indoor gym we transformed our Games Room into an

open space to allow room for sports and other physical activities.

1. Reduce unhealthy eating at the Club:

Removed all vending machines

Banned fast food/sodas/candy

Eliminated member ins & outs

Creating a Culture of Wellness

2. Increase access to healthy foods at the Club:

Applied to be a sponsor for FREE MEALS DAILY funded

through SFSP & After School Snack federal programs

o Breakfast, Lunch & Snack = FREE DAILY

Weekly Food Bank- Staff work hard to choose fresh fruits

and vegetables for weekly free food distribution to Club

families and the community

Healthy Free Meals Replace Fast Food

Through the federally funded SFSP we are able to provide healthy

meals for breakfast and lunch for free and at no cost to the Club.

TAKING IT TO THE NEXT LEVEL:1. Staff Modeling-

Staff agreed to take on the goal of only (1) eating

healthy foods while Club members are present & (2)

initiating conversations with youth about the nutritious

content of foods they are eating

Food served at staff meetings models healthy choices

Serving more water & trying fruit infused water to

encourage members and staff to drink more H2O

Cooking classes= healthy foods ONLY

Policy of using wheat not white bread

Boys & Girls Clubs of Oakland

• High Lights: The chemistry the members build from

working on teams during triple play activities could be

seen throughout the entire club.

• Best Practices:

– Keep the activities “Fresh & New” weekly

– Conduct activities that are team building oriented

– Constructive competitive activities (competitive activities where

there isn’t a winner) are needed to build self esteem

– Members vote on the fitness activity for the day; twice a week

Last One Moving: Hula Hoop Activity

Once a competitors hula hoop stops moving, they must be completely still. The last

member moving is the winner. Boys and Girls participate, and the Last One Moving

Activity.

Frisbee Football

A twist on the game of football! All ages and athletic levels can

participate. Replace the football with a Frisbee of two teams, and

the games begin!!
