25 YEARS OF THE TRIPLE CROWN OF SURFINGJust as the sport o suring grew rom humble roots in Hawa ii to beco me a global industry, so too the Vans Triple Crowno Suring has evolved rom a series o local events to become the holy grail o proessional suring. What star ted o asa local Hawaiian-based championship has transormed into the most prestigious title-within-a-title that suring has to oer.

The irst international suring contest in Hawaii, the Makaha International Suring Championship, was held on the westside o Oahu in the early 50s. While Makaha introduced the competitive suring world to Hawaii, the major recognition oOahus potential came when events began on the North Shore. In 1971, the irst Pipeline Masters event was staged by ormer world champion surer and event ual ounder o the o theTriple Crown o Suring Series Fred Hemmings. This year, the Billabong Pipeline Masters celebrates 37 years.

In 1983, Hemmings decided to create a title that would better showcase the three existing Hawaiian events - the PipelineMasters, World Cup o Suring and the Hawaiian Pro. With their world recognition already secure he linked the threecontests into a series collectively known as The Triple Crown o Suring.

The concept was to ocus attention on three o the worlds most prominent suring competitions held in unquestionably themost competitive and awesome suring venue anywhere, Hemmings said. The whole idea behind the Triple Crown Serieswas to have a champion emerge rom the three major sur sites on Oahus North Shore. Catching an eight totenootwave at the Pipeline certainly demands dierent skills than riding a 15-oot wave at Sunset.

It grew out o a need to have something to acknowledge the results o the Hawaiian events, explains Randy Rarick,Executive Director o the Vans Triple Crown o Suring.

Rather than just have rated events that were part o a world tour, the Triple Crown title was ormed to recognize the bestmale surer in the big waves o the North Shore a location that has come to be known as the proving ground o everysurer. In 1997, we added the womens Triple Crown to equally eature the women.

Rarick summarizes the enduring natureand important place in surings historywhich the Triple Crown holds: Suringgreats have come and gone, surboarddes igns have undergone radica lchanges and the bearing on the worldtitle has ebbed and lowed, but onething has remained constant: the VansTriple Crown o Suring and the questor the Triple Crown title have generatedsome o the most spectacular moments

    in pro suring history.

    CELEBRATING 25 YEARS!

HISTORY: Hawaii is the birthplace o the original Core/Extreme/Action Sport.Suring, the original extreme sport, was born centuries ago in the Hawaiian Islands. Long beore landlocked surers createdskateboarding in the 60s, snowboarding in the 80s and more recently wakeboarding, ancient Hawaiian men and womensured on boards crated rom wood o the wiliwili tree or o koa. Known as the sport o kings, suring thrived until the early1800s when New England missionaries arrived and preached against the pastime. Virtually abandoned until the beginning othe 20th century, the sport was revitalized by a young Hawaiian and uture Olympic swimming champion Duke PaoaKahanamoku. Suring is today recognized as the oicial sport o Hawaii.

LIFESTYLE: Born in Caliornia on the Feet o Duke Kahanamoku.Vans shoe company was born in Orange, Caliornia, and given light on the eet o Hawaiian legend Duke Kahanamoku. It wasduring the Duke Invitational at Huntington Beach Pier in 1965, that Mr. Paul Van Doren boasted to Kahanamoku that he couldmake him a pair o shoes out o any abric he liked and have them on his eet by morning. The Duke looked around andinstructed riend Fred Hemmings (who later went on to ound the Triple Crown o Suring) to take o his Hawaiian print shirt. The rest is history. Vans is now a public company and spans three generations o Van Dorens since Duke irst wore his

    traditional print shoes.

TOURISM & BUSINESS: North Shore is one o Oahus Top Visitor Destinations. Sur IndustryBrings in $9 Million in 2006.

It used to be that the sleepy North Shore o Oahu only came to li e during the winter months o November through January.Aectionately known as the country or its minimal development, vast expanses o crop ields and lengthy stretch owhite-sand beaches, it was suring speciically big-wave riding and the Vans Triple Crown o Suring series that put theNorth Shore on the map. But today, this country sur town is on the must-see list o visitors to Hawaii 365 days a year.Thankully, it hasnt lost any o its charm, largely due to strong local eorts to keep the country, country. Known as theouter-island experience that you dont need to travel outer-island or, the North Shore is a true experience particularlyduring winter sur season. Home to around 15,000 residents, suring is the lieblood o this country-living community, directly

injecting more than $9million into t he economy during Triple Crown sur season (November and December) alone.

BUSINESS: Southern Caliornia Sur Industry Makes Pilgrimage to Sports Mecca.Considered the worldwide headquarters to the sport and liestyle industry, the booming Southern Caliornia sur industrytraces its roots to Hawaii. Many companies pay homeage to the sports Mecca with an annual winter pilgri mage to the VansTriple Crown o Suring. Vans (Santa Fe Springs), Quiksilver/Roxy (Huntington Beach), ONeill (Irvine), Ree (San Diego),and Billabong (Irvine) among others rent oceanront homes and shuttle company executives, team riders and photographersto the competition. The Series oicial sur report and orecaster, Surfine.com, is based in Huntington Beach and the industrysmajor magazines Suring (San Clemente), Surer (San Juan Capistrano) and TransWorld Sur (Oceanside) set up shop onthe North Shore and produce entire issues devoted to the Vans Triple Crown o Suring.

SPORT: North Shore is Worlds Most Unique Athletic Competition Venue. No other sport on the planet boasts a playing surace that is as ever-changing as the ocean on Oahus North Shore. Thehuge winter swells that descend upon the Vans Triple Crown o Surng have traveled thousands o miles through open ocean driven by massive storms and typhoons only to unleash their ury on the shallow rees o the North Shore. Titanic volumeso water are hurled shoreward with tremendous orce. The Triple Crown eatures three o the worlds most demanding anddistinct big-wave venues: Haleiwa a high perormance wave; Sunset Beach a location known or its vast, shiting peaksand wide open playing ield; and Pipeline the worlds most renowned wave. Pipeline eatures huge, death-deying barrelsbreaking over a shallow ree just a stones throw rom the shorelines viewing gallery.

SPORT: Pipeline Masters is the Worlds Most Revered Pro Suring Competition.Pipeline rears up 50 eet rom shore and showcases waves o up to ive stories high that march shoreward beore explodingupon a barely submerged coral ree. Hitting with speed and power, these swells launch abruptly, jacking up rom just a eweet in height to 15 or 20 eet in a matter o seconds. The eect o this is a hollow, barreling wave that has made the nameBanzai Pipeline amous around the world.

The irst documented ride at Pipeline was in December o 1961, by Caliornian Phil Edwards, captured on ilm by legendaryilmmaker Bruce Brown. Caliornian shaper Mike Dienderer called it Pipeline ater large concrete pipes being laid innearby Kamehameha Highway. Locals called the beachBanzai ater the small beachside nursery o Bonsai trees;a name that coincidently relected the suicidal commitmentit takes to drop into one o these monsters that explode overshallow ree.

The Pipeline Masters was ounded in 1971, by Hawaiis FredHemmings. Although Je Hakman won the inauguralcompetition, ellow Hawaii surer Gerry Lopez was riding thewave with such a casual elegance that the contest was laternamed ater him. In 1972 and 1973, Lopez won the PipeMasters with a display o suring so beautiul that it causedJim McKay, the legendary ABC announcer, to wipe tears romhis eyes on air.

The Pipeline Masters quickly grew in stature. The NY Timesdeclared a huge day in the early years as A Day o Days onEarth. Sports Illustrated published a cover story in 1982

called Thunder rom the Seas. ABCs Wide World o Sportseatured the event or nearly a decade. A popularity pollranked the event ourth, right behind Olympic igure skating and ski jumping. The annual migration to the sport s Meccabecame a right o passage or aspiring pro sur ers. Major airlines were orced to add lights to accommodate growingnumbers o spectators.

To the suring world, a Pipeline Masters title is the pinnacle o the sport; surings version o Valhalla. The raternity owinners is an elite group, each winner bringing their own individual style and personality to the Pipe, yet all inextricably linked.

This year, Vans would like to welcome Billabong as the new sponsor o the Billabong Pipeline Masters.

PRESTIGE: Title Within a Title or Men and WomenThe Vans Triple Crown o Suring oers a title within a title not only are the worlds best pro surers competing or glory ateach o the three venues that make up the series, but the top perorming male and top perorming emale across t he threeevents will each receive a bonus $10,000 purse and the highly coveted Vans Triple Crown Champion title.

Ater the ASP world t itle, the Vans Triple Crown title has long been regarded the sports most prestigious honor, based uponthe phenomenal talent it takes to perorm consistently in the size and quality o waves on oer through the series. The wavesat Haleiwa, Sunset Beach and the Banzai Pipeline are three o the worlds most challenging, dangerous and demanding venues inthe world.

The Vans Triple Crown title has long been regardeda harbinger o world titles, with more than hal othe Vans Triple champions going on to becomeworld champions. To win a Triple Crown title is a

sure way to make ones mark in the annulso suring history.

THE 37thANNUAL $300,000 BILLABONG PIPELINE MASTERSFinal Event Vans Triple Crown of SurfingDecember 8-20, 2007

The Billabong Pipeline Masters is the final contest of the 2007 Vans Triple Crown of Surfing and ASP World Championship Tour. Its resultswill determine the 2007 Triple Crown and World Champion. This pioneer event is the longest running professional surfing competitionin the world, celebrating 37 years this winter.

Location: The famous and dangerous Banzai Pipeline break at Ehukai Beach Park. Alot of factors must come together forPipeline to work well: sand movement off the beach and off the reef, the right direction and size of swell, and favorable winds. Yetamazingly, during the holding period of this event, year after year, at least four epic days usually present themselves. Pipeline is aseries of reefs lining up from way outside to the beach first reef, second reef, third reef (furthest out), as well as Backdoor Pipe (theright-breaking wave) off the peak closest to shore. In a nutshell, Pipeline focuses tons of water onto a barely submerged reef,

jacking up and doubling over in an instant to provide a cavernous, tubular wave that competitors disappear inside and hopefullyre-emerge from.

Dates: December 820, 2007. This event requires four full days of competition and will be held on the days the surf isbiggest and best as determined by the contest director.

Past Champions:2006 Andy Irons (Hawaii) 1978 Larry Blair (Australia)2005 Andy Irons (Hawaii) 1977 Rory Russell (Hawaii)2004 Jamie OBrien (Hawaii) 1976 Rory Russell (Hawaii)2003 Andy Irons (Hawaii) 1975 Shaun Tomson (South Africa)2002 Andy Irons (Hawaii) 1974 Jeff Crawford (USA)2001 Bruce Irons (Hawaii) 1973 Gerry Lopez (Hawaii)2000 Rob Machado (USA) 1972 Gerry Lopez (Hawaii)1999 Kelly Slater (USA) 1971 Jeff Hakman (Hawaii)1998 Jake Paterson (Australia)1997 John Gomes (Hawaii)1996 Kelly Slater (USA)1995 Kelly Slater (USA)1994 Kelly Slater (USA)1993 Derek Ho (Hawaii)1992 Kelly Slater (USA)1991 Tom Carroll (Australia)

The 9th annual Billabong Pro Maui womens competition is the inal World Championship Tour(WCT) event on the 2007Association o Suring Proessionals World Tour and will crown the 2007 world champion and womens Triple Crown champion.

Location: Honolua Bay, Maui. Located on the northwestern tip o Maui, Honolua Bay is an incredible, peelingright-hander that winds o over a rocky ree/point, oering considerable tube-riding potential as well as multiple maneuvers.Because the break requires a large swell just to get started, it rarely gets stormy and unrideable either too small to sur,or absolutely perect i a solid swell is running. The headland above oers excellent spectator viewing and the area is quiteundeveloped and picturesque.

Dates: Holding period December 8-20, 2007. Competition is held on one to two days within the holding period whenthe sur is deemed to be best, as determined by the contest director.
