The El Paso Chihuahuas (Triple-A, San Diego Padres) are hosting the 32nd edition of the Triple-A Baseball All-Star Game at Southwest University Park, July 8-10. The three days of festivities include a Home Run Derby and concludes with the nationally televised All-Star Game. The game showcases the best players of Triple-A Baseball's Pacific Coast League against those from the International League.
"The Triple-A All-Star Game is a marquee event for all of Minor League Baseball," said Minor League Baseball's President and CEO Pat O'Conner. "To bring together the top caliber of players for this event makes it a showcase event. I can think of no better venue to play this game than in El Paso. What has happened in El Paso is no surprise given the first-rate ownership, management and affiliation put together for the passionate fans in the region."
This is the second Triple-A Baseball national event hosted at Southwest University Park. The Gildan Triple-A Baseball National Championship Game was played on September 22, 2015 with the Pacific Coast League's Fresno Grizzlies (Houston Astros) defeating the Columbus Clippers (Cleveland Indians), 7-0.
The Memphis Redbirds have been selected to host the 2019 Triple-A National Championship Game at AutoZone Park, which will be played on Tuesday, Sept. 17 at 7:00 p.m. (CT) and pit the winner of the Pacific Coast League against the winner of the International League in a one-game, winner-take-all showdown for Triple-A supremacy.
Memphis is the first city to have the honor of repeating as Triple-A National Championship Game host since the game moved away from being played annually in Oklahoma City in 2011. The Redbirds previously hosted the game in 2016, a 3-1 win for the IL's Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders (Yankees) over the PCL's El Paso Chihuahuas (Padres), in front of a raucous Downtown Memphis crowd of 9,471.

DID YOU KNOW?Vladimir Guererro Jr., 20, enters 2019 as the consensus No. 1 prospect in all of baseball. A season ago he made a run at batting .400 before fading in August and finishing with a .381 AVG over 95 games which included 29 doubles and 20 HR. He struck out only once more than he walked (38 K; 37 BB) and led all of Minor League Baseball not just in batting average but in on-base percentage (.437 OBP) and slugging percentage (.636 SLG) as well.
In 2018 he was promoted to Triple-A Buffalo after anchoring the middle of the New Hampshire Fisher Cats' batting order (Double-A, Toronto Blue Jays) for 61 games. Over the final 30 games of his season he batted .336 against Triple-A pitching. In six games against the RailRiders, he batted .368 (7-for-19) with a double, 2 RBI and 5 BB (.500 OBP).

DID YOU KNOW?September 3, 2018 marked a special homecoming for RHP Michael King as he made the start at McCoy Stadium against the Pawtucket Red Sox. King, who hails from Warwick, RI and pitched at powerhouse Bishop Hendricken Catholic H.S., had dozens of tickets to leave for family and friends for the regular season finale. They got to see him allow just 1R/1ER on 3H over 6.0 IP that afternoon.
His mother is a lifelong New York Yankees fan and father is a lifelong Boston Red Sox fan: “It was ALCS, Yankees vs. Red Sox. My dad had to work that night, but he had tickets through work, so he sent me with my mom. Mariano Riviera closed it out and the Yankees won. I ended up falling in love with the Yankees that game.” Father, Jim, spent over 10 years as a news anchor including at WPRI-TV (Providence, RI) and NECN and now works as a Branch Sales Manager for Hershey’s Ice Cream overseeing distribution for Massachusetts and Rhode Island. One of his major clients is Pawtucket's McCoy Stadium.

DID YOU KNOW?The New York Yankees made a number of moves at the Trade Deadline in 2018 which affected the Scranton/Wilkes-Barre RailRiders roster. Of the seven players traded directly off the roster in the six days leading up to the deadline, INF/OF Tyler Austin was shipped to the Minnesota Twins July 31.
July 30, he suited-up in a doubleheader in which the RailRiders and Red Wings completed a suspended game from June 24. Austin homered back in June (officially, July 30) and then the following day was in uniform for the Red Wings when he hit a home run off Brady Lail that went an estimated 454 feet. In three games against his old club following the trade, Austin was 4-for-12 (.333 AVG), with 2 HR, 2 RBI and 2 R.

DID YOU KNOW?A season ago, the RailRiders won 10-of-17 games head-to-head against the Syracuse Chiefs in their final season before becoming the Syracuse Mets. RailRiders pitching held Syracuse to a .267 AVG over 17 games, but it would have been significantly lower if not for Irving Falu and Jacob Wilson each pestering the RailRiders in 14 of those games. Combined, the two batters posted a .420 AVG (47-for-112), .467 OBP (10 BB) and a .554 SLG (10 2B, 3B, HR). If you subtract the performances by Falu and Wilson, the rest of Syracuse's lineup batted .231 against SWB pitching last year.
Meanwhile, RailRiders hitters had some of their collectively best performances against Chiefs' pitchers a season ago. Among players who played in at least three games against Syracuse, nine hit better than .310: Brandon Drury (8G, .485 AVG) | Wilkin Castillo (5G, .438 AVG) | Giovanny Urshela (3G, .364 AVG) Gleyber Torres (3G, .357 AVG) | Ryan McBroom (16G, .344 AVG) | Clint Frazier (11G, .340 AVG) Rey Navarro (6G, .318 AVG) | Tyler Wade (14G, .311 AVG) | Zach Zehner (8G, .310 AVG)
