Welcome Thank you for joining us today as we gather together to worship our Savior and King, Jesus. This service is a liturgical service, meaning the congregation is an active participant. Theologian James K.A. Smith writes, liturgy “shapes and constitutes our identity by forming our most basic attunement to the world... our ultimate love/desire is shaped by practices, not [only] ideas that are merely communicated to us.” So we orient our heart and mind through the rhythm of poetry, song, vows, music, bread and wine. And through that process, we immerse ourselves into the ancient story of the Christian faith.

In the liturgy, the congregation participates in the bold liturgy. During the Communion portion of our service, all baptized Christians are welcome to the Lord’s Table. Restrooms are located in the outside breezeway located next to the parking lot. At this time please silent your phones or noisemakers.

Preparation As we gather together into this sacred time, quietly consider anew the mystery of the Word becoming flesh and dwelling among us. Just as Jesus the Christ was present two thousand years ago walking with and among his people, so we believe that in the gathering together of God’s holy church, Jesus meets us here as our risen Lord and King.

The Affirmation of Faith

“The Nicene Creed”

We believe in one God, the Father, the Almighty, maker of heaven and earth, of all that is, visible and invisible.

We believe in one Lord, Jesus Christ, the only Son of God, eternally begotten of the Father, God from God, Light from Light, true God from true God, begotten, not made, of one Being with the Father. Through him all things were made. For us and for our salvation he came down from heaven, was incarnate from the Holy Spirit and the Virgin Mary, and was made man. For our sake he was crucified under Pontius Pilate; he suffered death and was buried. On the third day he rose again in accordance with the Scriptures; he ascended into heaven and is seated at the right hand of the Father. He will come again in glory to judge the living and the dead, and his kingdom will have no end.

We believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord, the giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son is worshiped and glorified who has spoken through the Prophets. We believe in one holy catholic and apostolic Church. We acknowledge one baptism for the forgiveness of sins. We look for the resurrection of the dead, and the life of the world to come. Amen.

When we affirm our faith together, it reminds us that we are part of an ancient and global faith. This was the last great creed of the undivided church. The Nicene Creed forms the great theology of the Holy Trinity, the great drama of redemption, and the hope of restoration from sin through faith in Jesus Christ.

A sermon is not just teaching for living; it is mainly a time when Christ encounters his people through his Word.

The Prayers of the People* “All Things New” Leader 1: John, as your sisters and brothers at Trinity Anglican Church, today we give thanks for your ministry among us. We say farewell to you and Monica, and we bless the journey ahead, for you and for our congregation.

People: All praise be to our God, our Creator, Redeemer, and Holy Spirit. There is one Body, one Spirit. There is one hope in God’s call to us.

Leader 2: We have shared worship and work, happy and sad occasions, vestry meetings, and outreach. We had Tuesday night suppers together and enjoyed Bible Study, your teaching and reaching out to the homeless and Killarney Elementary kids. We met you in funeral homes, at the hospital, on the street and in our homes.

Leader 3: Now is a time of many feelings: sadness, joy, anticipation, loss, satisfaction. Farewells are hard, but we have accomplished much during these years together, and we give God thanks for you both and your ministry among us.

John Nyhan: I leave as your pastor with cherished memories of our times together. You have shaped my faith, ministered to Monica and me, and helped me see and seek God’s presence in my life and in the community. Thank you for your care, your creativity, your encouragement, and your hope.

People: God has blessed us through your ministry in many ways. We now bless you both as you begin a new chapter in your life journey.

Jonathan: As you, the People of Trinity Anglican Church, bless John as he leaves this congregation, do you now release him from his pastoral responsibilities and relationships?

People: With the help of God we do. We give thanks for John’s faithfulness and acknowledge this transition in the life of our congregation. We will pray for God’s continued guidance in John’s life.

Jonathan: John, do you release the congregation from its loyalty to you as their pastor? Do you release the members from turning to you and depending on you to provide the pastoral ministries they seek?

Prayer is a vital act in Christian worship. To aid in preparing the congregation for prayer, the church developed litanies dating back to the early church of Antioch. A litany is a prayer form in which a minister says or sings a petition followed by a congregational response. Prayer doesn’t change God-‐ prayer changes us. Through prayer we are changed and transformed into the image and likeness of Jesus Christ. To pray means that we must be open and willing to change.


John Nyhan: With the help of God, I do. When we meet in the future, I will be your friend but not your Rector. I will no longer perform pastoral duties among you. I will keep the congregation and its ministries in my prayers.

Jonathan: May God bless and guide you, John, on the next steps of your journey. May God bless and guide your family in this time of transition. May God bless and guide this congregation as it continues kingdom work and serves with new leadership. May God bless and guide each of us in the new relationship that we now will share.

People: To God’s gracious mercy we commit you. The Lord bless you and keep you; the Lord make his face to shine upon you and be gracious unto you. The Lord lift up the light of his countenance upon you and give you peace both this day and forever. Amen.

Leader 4: So much we have learned in these past years, Lord, serving in your Kingdom. And, yes, we do still have questions as we face tomorrow. What would it look like…. if our church joined God’s work for good each day in our neighborhood?

People: As Jesus commanded, “Love your neighbor as yourself.”

Leader 1: If our church gave unchurched people in our neighborhood an opportunity to make a difference in the world?

People: Like the woman at the well, forgiven and sent forth, who shared the good news with all she met.

Leader 2: If our church asked people in our neighborhood what they need and offered to help them?

People: As Jesus healed the invalid by the Sheep’s Gate’s pool.

Leader 3: If our church reflected our community?

People: As on the Day of Pentecost?

Leader 4: If our church had many children in Sunday School from unchurched families?

People: As Jesus instructed, “Let the children come to me for such is the kingdom of God.”

Leader 1: If our church made acts of kindness a way of life?

People: Inasmuch as you have done it to the least of these, my brothers and sisters, you have done it to me.

Leader 2: If our church was a weekly celebration of what our community of faith has been doing all week long?

People: As the new converts devoted themselves to teaching and fellowship, to the breaking of bread and the prayers.

Leader 3: If our church had worship services so exciting and relevant, so transformative, that it would make me eager to invite my friends to worship?

People: O God, may we praise you with dancing, instruments, our voices, our whole being!

Leader 4: If our church understood the difference between a maintenance church and a missional church?

People: O God, may we make disciples of all nations, remembering you are with us to the end of the age.

Leader 1: If our church looked out to this new year as opportunity to serve God more fully and to grow according to His purpose?

People: Jesus said, “Anyone who listens to my teaching and follows it is wise, like a person who builds their house on a solid rock.”

Leader 4: If our church committed its time, talent and treasure, all its people, every single person: children, teens, middle aged, and seniors to heartily join in building God’s Kingdom, especially in the lives of people who find no hope?

People: Can anything ever separate us from Christ’s Love? No! Overwhelming victory is ours through Christ who loves us!

Jonathan: Lord, you are our strength, our song, our light and salvation. In mercy and love, You have heard our prayers today. We give thanks to You for You are good; Your mercy, Lord, endures for ever. Amen.


Confession and Absolution* Minister All who truly and earnestly repent of your sins, and seek to be reconciled with your neighbors, and intend to lead the new life, following the commandments of God, and walking in his holy ways: draw near with faith and make your humble confession to Almighty God.

All Most merciful God, we confess that we have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done, and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. We are truly sorry and we humbly repent. For the sake of your Son Jesus Christ, have mercy on us and forgive us; that we may delight in your will, and walk in your ways, to the glory of your Name. Amen.

Celebrant Almighty God, our heavenly Father, who in his great mercy has promised forgiveness of sins to all those, who sincerely repent and with true faith turn to him, have mercy upon you, pardon and deliver you from all your sins, confirm and strengthen you in all goodness, and bring you to everlasting life; through Jesus Christ our Lord. Amen.

The Peace Celebrant The Peace of the Lord be always with you. People And with your spirit.

Because sin is so pervasive in both our corporate and individual lives, Christians and non-‐Christians are called to come before the Father with honesty and transparency, confessing our brokenness in thought, word, and deed; and asking for both forgiveness and healing through Jesus Christ......

Because of this, when the liturgist proclaims that your sins are forgiven, you can know that Christ agrees.

The Prayer of Consecration Almighty God, our heavenly Father, in your tender mercy, you gave your only Son Jesus Christ to suffer death upon the cross for our redemption. He offered himself and made, once for all time, a perfect and sufficient sacrifice for the sins of the whole world. He instituted this remembrance of his passion and death, which he commanded us to continue until he comes again. So now, Father, we ask you to bless and sanctify, with your Word and Holy Spirit, these gifts of bread and wine that we may partake of his most blessed Body and Blood.

On the night that he was betrayed, our Lord Jesus Christ took bread; and when he had given thanks, he broke it, and gave it to his disciples, saying, “Take, eat; this is my Body which is given for you: Do this in remembrance of me.”

The Proclamation Celebrant Therefore, we proclaim the mystery of faith: All Christ has died. Christ is risen. Christ will come again.

Celebrant Lord and heavenly Father, with these holy gifts we celebrate the memorial instituted by your beloved Son, remembering his passion and death, his resurrection and ascension, and his promise to come again. Grant that by his merits and death, and through faith in his Blood, we and your whole Church may receive forgiveness of our sins and all other benefits of his passion, making us one body with him that he may dwell in us, and we in him.
