1 The word that came to Jeremiah from theLord: 2 "Come, go down to the potter'shouse, and there I will let you hear mywords." 3 So I went down to the potter'shouse, and there he was working at hiswheel. 4 The vessel he was making of claywas spoiled in the potter's hand, and hereworked it into another vessel, as seemedgood to him.

6 The messengers returned to Jacob, saying, "We came to your brother Esau, and he is coming to meet you, and fourhundred men are with him." 7 Then Jacobwas greatly afraid and distressed; 22 Thesame night he got up and took his twowives, his two maids, and his elevenchildren, and crossed the ford of theJabbok. 23 He took them and sent themacross the stream, and likewise everythingthat he had. 24 Jacob was left alone; and aman wrestled with him until daybreak. 25When the man saw that he did not prevailagainst Jacob, he struck him on the hipsocket; and Jacob's hip was put out of jointas he wrestled with him. 26 Then he said,"Let me go, for the day is breaking." ButJacob said, "I will not let you go, unlessyou bless me." 27 So he said to him, "Whatis your name?" And he said, "Jacob." 28Then the man said, "You shall no longer be

called Jacob, but Israel, for you havestriven with God and with humans, andhave prevailed." 29 Then Jacob asked him,"Please tell me your name." But he said,"Why is it that you ask my name?" Andthere he blessed him.

1 The Lord is my light and my salvation;Whom shall I fear? The Lord is thestrength of my life; Of whom shall I beafraid? 2 When the wicked came againstme To eat up my flesh, My enemies andfoes, They stumbled and fell. 3 Though anarmy may encamp against me, My heartshall not fear; Though war should riseagainst me, In this I will be confident. 4One thing I have desired of the Lord, Thatwill I seek: That I may dwell in the houseof the Lord all the days of my life, Tobehold the beauty of the Lord, And toinquire in His temple. 5 For in the time oftrouble He shall hide me in His pavilion; Inthe secret place of His tabernacle He shallhide me; He shall set me high upon a rock.6 And now my head shall be lifted upabove my enemies all around me;Therefore I will offer sacrifices of joy inHis tabernacle; I will sing, yes, I will singpraises to the Lord. 13 I would have lostheart, unless I had believed That I wouldsee the goodness of the Lord In the land ofthe living. 14 Wait on the Lord; Be of goodcourage, And He shall strengthen yourheart; Wait, I say, on the Lord!

““YYOOUU CCAANN’’TT BBEEAATT GGOODD GGIIVVIINNGG””

There is an “old-school” gospel song, which says: “You can’t beat God giving nomatter how hard you try. The more you give, the more He’ll give to you. Just keep ongiving…because it’s really true!”

The words of that song are true. Ourmembers from all walks of life can testify overand over again how God just outdoes God’sself when we give. GGoodd sshhoowwss uupp aanndd sshhoowwssoouutt!!

Of course, the word of God camethrough the Prophet Malachi 3,000 years agosaying the same thing. God opens up thewindows of Heaven and pours us out blessingsthat are too manifold and too powerful for us tocontain. God said that yet we don’t believethat too often.

Since the double whammy ofHurricane Katrina and the FederalGovernment’s racist response to the poorBlacks “left behind” in Louisiana, Mississippiand Alabama, the members of thiscongregation have been giving at an incrediblerate and have found out, once again, just howtrue God is to God's word. You have not just been giving your dollars -although the amount of your gifts have beenincredible! (Just last Sunday you gave anadditional $41,000 to KKaattrriinnaa RReelliieeff !!) Yourgifts of time, your gifts of food, water, hours ofservice, physical presence and the offering ofyour homes, your love and compassion to theevacuees have been overwhelming!

In each instance, the more you havegiven the more God has given back to us! I amwriting you to say, “Thank you.” I thank youfor your sacrifices.

Yes! We still have our school to build.Yes! We still have our mortgage to pay off.Yes! We still have our ministry that goes on.

Our brothers and sisters in Africa arestill depending on us in Saltpond, Ghana, inGuguletu, South Africa, at the Steve BikoInstitute in Brazil and all around this world!

We still support financially the TrinityUnited Church of Christ congregation in Gary,Indiana and the Sankofa United Church ofChrist in Atlanta, Georgia. We still support theKenwood United Church of Christ here inChicago and the Advent Community UnitedChurch of Christ in Columbus, Ohio.

We still support the United NegroCollege Fund and we still lift offerings tosupport our graduating high school seniors inorder that they might get a college education. The work of our church goes on and theministry of our church goes on.

Yet, over and above what we normallydo and what it is we do routinely, you have“stepped up to the plate” and demonstrated byyour sacrifices (material, physical andfinancial), just what the Lord Jesus asked us todemonstrate. Jesus said, ““IInn aass mmuucchh aass yyoouuhhaavvee ddoonnee iitt uunnttoo tthhee lleeaasstt ooff tthheessee mmyy lliittttlleeoonneess,, yyoouu hhaavvee ddoonnee iitt uuppoonn ttoo mmee!!””

You keep doing for God and for that Iam grateful. You keep doing for the “least ofthese,” and for that I am grateful. You keep ongiving and God keeps on giving back to you.Thank you for who you are and thank you forall that you do.

Sincerely and gratefully yours,

Pastor Jeremiah A. Wright, Jr.

While FEMA and the governmentfailed the poor black and white peopleaffected by the broken levee in New Orleans, the media outlook on white people going inclosed stores to find sustenance for themselvesand their families was deemed as peopleseeking food. However, when a black personwas shown affected by the samecircumstances, and doing the same thing tofind sustenance for themselves and theirfamilies, it was deemed as looting by themajority of media outlets. What was thedifference? What changed?

Nothing changed. It has been the samestory since the founding of this country.Racism is interwoven into every thread of lifein this country. The failure of the governmentto send assistance to poor blacks in NewOrleans, as well as the characterization ofBlacks as looters while Whites search for foodis nothing more than what Dr. Marimba Anihas coined as “Rhetorical Ethic.”

Rhetorical Ethic according to Dr. Aniis defined as: Culturally structured EuropeanHypocrisy. It is a statement framed in termsof acceptable moral behavior towards othersthat is meant for rhetorical purposes only. Itspurpose is to disarm intended victims ofEuropean cultural and political imperialism. Itis meant for “export” only. It is not intendedto have significance within the culture. Its

essence is its deceptive effect in the service ofEuropean Power.

Just as the rhetorical ethic is found inthe racism that built this country, we can alsofind the racial rhetorical, which exists in theBush Family. Upon viewing the livingconditions of those displaced persons in theHouston Astrodome, Barbara Bush, themother of George Bush stated that thoseconditions worked out well for them becausemany of them were underprivileged anyway. Now we see, in the words of Kanye West, why George Bush doesn’t care about Blackpeople. He was taught that Blacks are notpeople for which to be cared.

Stewardship

INVEST TIME IN IMPORTANT THINGS

As we live from day to day, we areinvesting our time and talents in various things. Are they really important? As Christianstewards, do we willingly volunteer some of ourtime and talent to the work of our church?Whatever we are doing had better be important. It costs us a day of our lives.

We Manage What God Has Given UsA steward is defined as: an

administrator or supervisor; a manager. Aspeople of faith, we manage what God has givenus. We are accountable to Him for we use Hisgifts. We have both an individual andcommunity obligation as stewards. We need topersonally decide how to develop and committhe abilities and possessions we have. We mustalso resond to our faith community, the churchwhich provides us with opportunities toheighten the effect of our stewardship.

Indication of Our ValuesIt is quite one thing to say that we are

committed to serving God, and quite anotherthing to demonstrate that with our pocketbooks. But the extent to which we are willing to dothat, reveals whether we are offering to Godthat which costs nothing, or that which is trulysacrificial.

Your Friends in Service,

The Stewardship MinistryConstance A. King, EditorStacey Moore, Chairperson
