FLOWERS FOR OCTOBER/NOVEMBER

During October the flowers will be given by Pamela Moss on the 4th (Harvest), in celebration of Pam’s 90th birthday on Tuesday 6th, Kum Morley on the 11th, the Eleady-Cole family on the 18th, and by Marietta Maciejewskie on the 25th.

During November they will be given by Audrey Ward on the 1st, Brenda Parker on the 8th (Remembrance Sunday), by Sherryl Tagalicud on the 15th, by Lilian Scard on the 22nd , by Maureen & Alex Smith on the 29th.

On Sunday 6th September we welcomed to the Trinity family, Sophia Etia, daughter of Etia and Ekaete Ndarake and on the 20th Ethan Nathaniel, son of Gavin and Kim Brown.

From the Manse……………

As I begin my time in the Circuit I want to take time to consider what God is saying and how it affects the conversations over the coming months. What does God want of us?

I don’t know about you but for me there doesn’t seem to be much that is worth watching on the TV at the moment. As a result I retreat to old favourites and through them God nudges my imagination.

I was watching an episode of the US political drama "The West Wing" and a conversation introduced the theme of how you can and what it means to be subject to one another. It arose from the later part of Ephesians six which contains lots of good stuff, teaching that is helpful to the church and personal discipleship. The last part is popular with some in the life of the church who like to codify and legalize behaviour. Yet the verse that precedes that passage places each one of us in the same position of servant hood. Not a relationship of hierarchy but of mutuality.

“Be subject/submit to one another out of reverence for Christ.” E5.21... The question I want to ask is of myself is "How can I serve to you?"/“How can you serve me?” that together we may serve Christ. I consider this question to be at the heart of discipleship. Everyone we meet in church/community are the people we are to whom we are subject.

I have discovered in my time here that I have a very different style of ministry from Viv. As a result I would ask you not to assume things will happen in the same way they did last year. I want you all to find a place in the ministry of the church so let me know what usually happens and together we will make plans. Yours in His service Mike

Stop lowering the level of immigration debate, churches tell Government

Leaders of four UK Churches have called on the Government to rethink the way it speaks about migrants. Today leaders of the Baptist Union of Great Britain, the Church of Scotland, the Methodist Church and the United Reformed Church issued a statement on the situation in Calais, emphasising the importance of public debate being grounded in values of compassion and of decisions being made on the basis of facts. They called on the Government to adopt language which better reflects the British values of compassion, hospitality and respect for human dignity and to promote a more informed and higher level of debate. "The language in which the Calais situation is being discussed tends too often to demonise, denigrate or dehumanise the individuals seeking refuge in Britain. To talk of those gathering at Calais as a 'swarm', or 'marauding around the area' encourages people to see those in desperation as less than human, and so less deserving of sympathy, respect or dignity. "The numbers involved do not warrant talk of an 'invasion' or 'flood' of migrants. The people at Calais represent a tiny fraction of the overall number of migrants who have entered the EU in the past year. In 2014, Germany took three times more asylum seekers than the UK's 14,000, and Sweden twice as many. France, Italy and Switzerland also granted asylum to more people than the UK. "We welcome the affirmation by the Home Secretary that Europe would 'always provide protection for those genuinely fleeing conflict or persecution'. We share the concern of all involved to see a peaceful and humane solution to this particular expression of a far broader catastrophe." The Churches have also asked the Government to recognise that most migrants cannot be returned to their country of origin and to accept the need for the UK to take its share of migrants.

A Prayer in response to the events in Calais

God of all humanity When your people were enslaved and displaced, You led them to a land that they could call home;

When your people were in exile; Your promise was that one day,

They would live in streets of play and laughter. When your disciples were afraid and uncertain,

You spoke of a Fathers House With mansions and places prepared.

We pray today for all those who have no place to call home,

Hearing the heart-cry of your word For those who are without refuge.

Where shelter is ours to offer Grant us the will and resolve to reflect the generosity of our Creator.

Where others stand in the way of those who need safe haven May our cry for justice never falter.

May the idols of self-interest and economic gain Never deflect us from the ways of your Kingdom.

Through Christ our Lord. AMEN

TOOLS WITH A MISSION

Many thanks to those of you who came to our Afternoon Tea and

brought tools, lawnmowers, etc., as well as scholars’ packs for TWAM.

Thank you also for your generous donations.

Jeff and I were able to take a very packed car load of items to the

warehouse in Ipswich and, after refurbishing, these will be sent to

various countries in Africa, to enable more people to earn a living and be

self sufficient.

FOOD FOR THOUGHT

Due to my recent illness I have had to curtail my church activities, in particular those at which I helped. One morning my bible reading was Luke 10 verses 38 - 42 - Mary and Martha. This reading made me realise that as we get older there is no need to be sad at taking a step back, as Jesus said to Mary “Mary you have chosen the right thing and it will not be taken away from you” Could I become like this Mary? I have been so used to rushing around and doing things quickly. Bringing up children and working did not induce me to take my time over things. Tony used to call me “the white tornado” after an advert that used to appear on television. Looking back I can now see that if I had taken things a little bit slower I may not have had so many falls and disasters. We must not disregard Mary . She was the one who ran to meet Jesus when, she heard that he was coming after the death of Lazarus. Martha was the one who prepared food for Jesus and his friends and worked in the community. Where would we be without our Marthas and all the others who help to cook and clean. Our church would be cold and dirty with no teas, dinners and breakfasts to enjoy. But we need our Marys as well. Now (since my cancer diagnosis) I have to become a Mary. Due to waiting many hours in A&E and for various tests and consultant appointments recently whilst I am, hopefully, learning patience - very difficult and testing for me - some more (food for thought ) has come to my mind which I hope may be interesting for someone. At least it keeps me from being bored. Meg Davies

JMA – Junior Mission For All

On 1st November the JMA Collectors will be presented with their awards during the service. We are always looking for new collectors so please speak to me if you are interested. The collectors receive a collecting box and a magazine twice a year. The magazine includes information on projects supported by JMA. All collectors receive a badge and certificate for each year that they collect. This is an opportunity for our young people and their families to get involved in supporting worthwhile projects around the world.

OPERATION CHRISTMAS CHILD – SHOEBOX APPEAL 2015

Trinity will once again be supporting this project and leaflets are now available from the Church foyer explaining how to

pack and wrap your shoe box, this includes a list of what to include and what to leave out of your box. The final date to receive your boxes will be Sunday 1st November. The project is organised by the Christian charity the Samaritans Purse and in the past 24 years more than 120 million children in over 130 countries have received a shoebox filled with gifts. The shoeboxes are given to children based on need, regardless of their background or religious beliefs and given as an unconditional gift of love. The shoebox is sometimes the first gift the children have ever received and by including a notepad, pencils and pen in the shoebox could open up an education to a large number of children as without these supplies they are not allowed to attend school. Last year Trinity sent 112 boxes to the warehouse in Chelmsford, these were sent to Zambia, Zimbabwe and Romania. Some members of Trinity were at the warehouse helping in checking, sealing and packing into larger boxes for shipment – this is always a rewarding experience and from the Chelmsford warehouse more than 22,000 shoeboxes were sent. Please consider supporting this appeal, if you are not able to pack a whole shoebox, donating a couple of gifts to include in a box or by giving a small donation to help with the transport costs. Amahl and the Night Visitors

One of the most popular operas of all time. “Amahl and the Night Visitors”

tells the story of how a crippled young shepherd boy’s life changes forever

when he sees an amazing star “as big as a window “ !

When three foreign kings {who are following the star in their search for a

wondrous child} encounter Amahl and his mother, the result is a timeless and

inspiring message of how faith and love can work miracles.

Trinity Music and Drama will be performing this short opera as part of

their Christmas celebrations this year.

Dates of performance are Saturday December 5th at 7.30pm and

Sunday December 6th at 2.30pm

Both performances will take place in the Church and will be followed by

a short concert with some audience participation .

Tickets will cost £10 each and will include light refreshments.

Trinity’s stall at the Cathedral Christmas Market -

Saturday, 28th November

Please make a note of the date of our stall, in support of Christian Aid. It is a November date this year and not the usual early December one. We shall be selling home-baked goods (sweet or savoury) and new, or nearly new, gifts.

We need to start collecting gifts for sale now.

These can be handed to Jan or Jeff Green, or placed in the box in the foyer - this will be emptied regularly. Nearer the time, we shall be asking you to “Start baking!” - Carole and Roger Fairclough will be delighted to receive your promises of food to sell. Please consider whether you can be available to help man the stall on the day - let one of us know if you can. Further details are available on a poster elsewhere in this Trinity News.
