Pastor’s Page
I have had some great experiences of God in
South Milwaukee this past month. Here are a
few.
First was on Memorial Day. Thank
you to everyone who came out for the Memorial Day ceremony
and specifically for the dedication of Ruddy Cancel’s mural on
the wall of Tony G’s garage. It was a moving memorial
ceremony remembering those who have died in service of our
country. Many of Ruddy’s family were able to be there for the
dedication. Thank you to the Thrivent Member Group and
other individuals from Trinity who contributed to the
collection taken for the support of Rudy’s family and children.
Then there was the end of Ramadan. Mayor Brooks has been
hosting a faith leader’s breakfast I the city of Milwaukee and
as a result of those gatherings Imam Sa’ad Quadri invited the
South Milwaukee clergy to join the Masjid Al-Huda
community as they celebrated the breaking of the Ramadan
fast. It was a wonderful evening of meeting new friends and
learning about the Guidance Academy, praying together for the
well-being of the world, and breaking fast together with a meal.
We can learn a lot from one another and the first thing I learned
is that we are much more similar than we are different. We all
love God and seek his vision for the world.
Then there was the Thank You brunch that our
Stewardship Team put on for those at Trinity who have
volunteered in all the different aspects of ministry in this place.
And you have made an impact on others as we journey together
on this road of faith. Don’t underestimate your impact.
Sometimes people remember forever the smallest things – a
hug, a smile, a thoughtful gesture. Get involved in the mission
![Page 5: Trinity Tidings · 7/7/2019 · through Trinity, through South Milwaukee and beyond. We are part of that movement. We have been given gifts to share with others as we grow together](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022011915/5fcd12e2c07c5c7fd4550018/html5/thumbnails/5.jpg)
of God’s Kingdom in the world and watch transformation
happen!
Then there was the All People’s Gathering Block Party.
There were 8 of us from Trinity that went to the block party on
June 10. We learned a lot about our partner church. We got a
tour of the urban gardens and orchards. We toured the church
and heard about the growth of the ministry of All People’s over
the last 25 years. We met wonderful, faith filled people who
have been greatly impacted by All People’s ministry. Thank
you to the Thrivent Member Group who helped with matching
funds for All People’s women’s and children’s ministries.
Everyone was excited to think about the possibility of growing
in our faith together as we seek to be partner’s in God’s
mission. This will be a mutual partnership as we learn from one
another and bring all kinds of gifts to God’s table.
As we just celebrated Pentecost we can certainly
celebrate the movement of the Holy Spirit blowing through us,
through Trinity, through South Milwaukee and beyond. We are
part of that movement. We have been given gifts to share with
others as we grow together in the work of making disciples and
growing in our own faith.
When you send forth your spirit, they are created; and you
renew the face of the ground. Psalm 104:30
Blessings, Pastor Denise

Upcoming Opportunities:
Our inter-generational VBS July 15-17. The adult track will
continue the Lenten series on ministries of the Greater
Milwaukee Synod. Monday, July 15 will be Mary Campbell
who will speak on our El Salvador partnership and AMPARRO
which is an ELCA ministry to accompany migrant minors. We
will simulate the journey these young people make to find
safety and shelter. Tuesday, July 16 we will hear from the
Caring for Military Families taskforce as we hear about ways
to support the families of our congregations who have active
military personnel. Then Wednesday, July 17, Pastor Bill
Beyer will be here from Reconciling in Christ (RIC) which is
a taskforce that seeks the inclusion of all in our congregations
and addresses the concerns of the LGBTQ+ community.
South Milwaukee Fireman’s Dinner. Trinity will once again
sponsor and host the beverage station at the South Milwaukee
Fireman’s Dinner on Wednesday, July 24 from 4:30-8. We are
pleased to be out in the community getting to know our
neighbor’s. Please sign-up on the sheet in the narthex for a
shift.

Backpack’s for All People’s and Lakeview.
On the first Sunday of August you will have
the opportunity to pick-up an empty backpack
with an attached list of supplies needed for
school. You can do this alone or with someone
else or even a group of you. Also, the Caring
Team will be collecting general supplies for distribution to All
People’s, Lakeview, and Human Concerns. Then on the last
Sunday of August we will gather all the backpacks and
supplies together for a blessing before distributing them into
the community.
Mt. Meru Tumaini Health Clinic Fundraiser Dinner. On
Sunday, August 11 at 5pm there will be a fundraiser dinner for
the Mt. Meru Tumaini Health Clinic at Trinity in Fellowship
Hall. We will serve a Tanzanian meal of Plantain and Beef
Stew, Rice and Beans and Ugali (cornmeal) and greens.
Tickets are available from Pastor Denise. Adults are $15.00,
ages 6-13 $7.50, ages 5 and under free. We will also have our
Tanzanian boutique open for the purchase of Tanzanian items.
A program will follow dinner at 6pm up in the sanctuary. We
will hopefully livestream with Aliliywa Mbise who will be in
Tanzania. We will also take names of those interested in a 2020
mission trip and plan for a time to meet regarding the trip.

July 2019
Vacation Bible School Fun
This month we are having our
vacation bible school, but this year is a little different. This year
it’s open to all ages, and we hope everyone participates. I am
not sure how it’s going to go over, but for sure I’ll be there and
enjoy it myself. I hope you consider attending or can consider
it next year.
We do love children. Out of the mouth of babes is a
favorite saying which is about the innocent observations’
children can have. In previous Sunday and vacation bible
schools, I’ve found that kids can say the craziest things. I
overheard the Lord’s prayer many ways, like "Our Father, who
does art in heaven, Harold is His name. Or one four-year-old
prayed, "And forgive us our trash baskets as we forgive those
who put trash in our baskets."
That is cute and innocent. Other things that have been
heard in church would be "Lord, if you can't make me a better
boy, don't worry about it. I'm having a real good time like I
am." Or another Sunday school teacher asked her children as
they were on the way to church service, "And why is it
necessary to be quiet in church?" and one bright little girl
replied, "Because people are sleeping."
Well maybe that’s true for some, but I hope not. Other
cute kid things kids have said:
- Adam and Eve were created from an apple tree.
- Noah’s wife was called Joan of Ark.
- Lot’s wife was a pillar of salt by day, but a ball of fire
by night.
![Page 10: Trinity Tidings · 7/7/2019 · through Trinity, through South Milwaukee and beyond. We are part of that movement. We have been given gifts to share with others as we grow together](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022011915/5fcd12e2c07c5c7fd4550018/html5/thumbnails/10.jpg)
- Moses led the Hebrews to the Red Sea, where they
made unleavened bread, which is bread made without
any ingredients.
- The Egyptians were all drowned in the desert.
So there you have it. Our vacation bible school will be
a little different but for sure a lot of fun. We will be learning a
lot with the theme “Shipwrecked.” It will be a great time where
you can make your own memories, memorize a song, or pick
up another favorite kid saying.

Stewardship of our civic freedoms
As Americans celebrate the birthday of our nation, we
give thanks for our civic freedoms of speech, religion,
assembly, due process, a speedy trial, voting and many more.
Our freedom has made us the envy of much of the world.
But as with any valuable gift, our civic freedoms can be
abused, neglected or underappreciated to the point where, if we
aren’t careful, they hardly matter anymore.
Lutherans are guided by Martin Luther’s insight that we
are simultaneously called to be responsible citizens of “two
kingdoms” – first, of God’s spiritual realm, and second, of
earthly governments of people and laws. The synergy of our
“dual citizenship” directs us to be good stewards of our civic
freedoms.
Freedom of speech: Yes, even hateful speech and lies are
protected under our Constitution, but Christians avoid them in
obedience to Jesus’ command to love our neighbor as ourselves
and by the Eighth Commandment, which Luther explains in
The Small Catechism: “We should fear and love God, so that
we do not tell lies about our neighbors, betray or slander them,
or destroy their reputations.” We steward this freedom by
speaking honestly and insisting others do, too.
Freedom of religion: Millions of people across the globe,
including Christians, face persecution and discrimination
because of their faith. We dare not take our freedom for
granted, but exercise it with joy and defend the rights of others
to follow their own consciences.
Freedom from illegal prosecution: Our guarantees of due
process in legal, criminal and civil proceedings uphold justice
and guard against government misconduct. It works
![Page 12: Trinity Tidings · 7/7/2019 · through Trinity, through South Milwaukee and beyond. We are part of that movement. We have been given gifts to share with others as we grow together](https://reader031.fdocuments.in/reader031/viewer/2022011915/5fcd12e2c07c5c7fd4550018/html5/thumbnails/12.jpg)
imperfectly, as do all human systems, but as good stewards we
fight for justice and the rights for all.
Freedom of self-governance: With its interconnected checks
and balances, our three-branch system of government provides
stability, accountability and flexibility for change. It’s a great
system, but it requires us to be informed and involved. We
steward this freedom by participating in political processes,
voting and insisting on honest government that works for our
interests.
This month, as citizens of both God’s spiritual realm
and the United States of America, we renew our commitment
to be good stewards of the freedoms we are privileged to have.

Summer Rain
Oh, what is so pure as the glad summer rain,
That falls on the grass where the sunlight has lain?
And what is so fair as the flowers that lie
All bathed in the tears of the soft summer sky?
The blue of the heavens is dimmed by the rain
That wears away sorrow and washes out pain;
But we know that the flowers we cherish would die
Were it not for the tears of the cloud-laden sky.
The rose is the sweeter when kissed by the rain,
And hearts are the dearer where sorrow has lain;
The sky is the fairer that rain-clouds have swept,
And no eyes are so bright as the eyes that have wept

Stewardship Ministry Team Update
Adopt-A-Bill Returns for the Summer Months
Jesus transforms. Jesus loves. Are these just messages
to hear during the Christmas or Easter season? We hope not
and we know not. Trinity proclaims this all year and you can
help keep the message going. Adopt-A-Bill returns this
summer for the fourth year. This is your opportunity to help
with the regular expenses which enable us to focus on our
mission. Last year we raised $2,598 and are hoping to increase
that to $3,000 this year. What bills need help? Utilities,
worship supplies, office supplies, internet expense, water and
postage to name a few. It’s the items needed to support Trinity
and our work. The board is located in the narthex and will be
up until Labor Day weekend.
It will be the same process as last year. Pick out the
bill(s) you want to help with, put the post-it and donation into
a blue envelope and write “Adopt-A-Bill” on the front along
with your name and place it in the offering plate. That’s it. If
you want to streamline the process, just take a blue envelope,
enclose your contribution and write “Adopt-A-Bill” and your
name on the front and place in the offering plate.
Your continued generosity is greatly appreciated.
Regular reports on the program will be given during the
monthly financial updates with the total contributed given at
the end of the program.

FINANCE MINISTRY TEAM
May’s numbers could use some help. Net income/loss is
($3,620); YTD still a big deficit at ($11,453). Our carryover from
2018 has prevented us from borrowing from our reserve accounts.
Monthly gifting was low. Expenses were on target with our
ministry plan.
As you can tell from our numbers this year, we are again
very much counting on gifting at year end to turn this year around.
According to our annual ministry plan and your pledges, this
should happen.
We are so grateful for all that you do to provide Trinity
with the financial resources to continue its ministries. And we do
appreciate that by year end we usually have a balanced ministry
plan. However, it certainly would be easier if we could get some
of these financial gifts sooner rather than later; December is
always a big month but certain ministries have to be put on hold
until we know for sure what our year end results will be.
May 2019 Financial Summary Report
Month of May 2019 Total for Year

Trinity has an ENDOWMENT FUND!!!!!!!!!!!!
Based on the discussion/questions at our annual meeting about
the Endowment Fund, we felt it was important for the
congregation to be re-introduced to this ministry.
The Fund was originally started in 1975 and established
to help our congregation enhance the mission of the church,
apart from the operating ministry plan. Gifts will extend God’s
work within our church and community.
Endowment Funds differ from the annual giving. As a
permanent fund, only income from interest and dividends is
available for distribution.
Gifts are always welcome either by using your Blue
envelopes or contacting any Endowment Fund board member.
Types of gifts that can be made include cash and securities, real
estate, life insurance, Charitable Gift annuity, trust, bequest by
will, IRA, profit sharing, and 401k plan.
Investment income from the Fund is used for the
following beneficial purposes not usually included in the
church’s annual operating ministry plan. Examples may
include funds that extend the ministries of the church, provide
seed money for new ministries, and support of special
ministries such as scholarships and youth programs.
Current balance in the Fund is $187,000 with $33,204
available interest/dividends for distribution.
The current board members are Ray Bergwin, David
Hahn, Mike Radtke, Steve Mueller, Gary Zander. We meet
three or four times a year to review investment strategies and
ministry support opportunities. The Fund is always looking for
new members and ideas for ministries to support. Please feel
free to contact any of the board with your questions and/or
thoughts.

Vacation Bible School is “Shipwrecked”, and it will be offered to
all ages Monday July 15th through Wednesday, July 17th from 5:30
PM to 8:00 PM. It’s always a fun time. We will begin with a meal
served from 5:30 PM to 6:00 PM. This program is for adults as well
as kids. Please also invite your friends and neighbors to send their
kids even if they are not Trinity members as they are always
welcome. Also we are still looking for volunteer help, both middle
and high school youth as well as adults. If you have not been
contacted and want to help, please email Kari at
[email protected] to get more information.
Education Team Planning: Do you like to help plan special events
or get-togethers? Why don’t you consider joining the Education
Ministry Team to help us plan various events we hold each year such
as Rally Day, Sunday School Christmas Program, Vacation Bible
School, and others. We meet monthly and are always looking for
new ideas and improvements we can make. Please email Ray at
[email protected] or Kari at [email protected] to get
more information.
Sunday School Starts: Sunday School starts again the Sunday after
Labor Day, September 9th. We may have some team teacher
positions available, and we are always interested in maintaining a
good list of substitutes or helpers who could fill in as needed. Please
consider volunteering even if you have never taught before. We are
introducing a new curriculum that should make teaching bit easier.
We will have two Orientation Meetings on the new Curriculum at
10:30 AM on Sunday, August 4th and at 6:30 PM Tuesday, August
6th (you can attend either one). Please join us.

+Christian Symbol+
Wheat
Many of Jesus’ parables liken the kingdom of
heaven to wheat growing abundantly in a field,
as opposed to weeds planted by the evil one.
When God “sows” the gospel broadly, some soil produces
great crops of wheat (believers, people who become part of
God’s family); elsewhere, wheat (belief) flourishes briefly or
not at all. Wheat also symbolizes the bread of Holy
Communion and Christ, the bread of life.

TRINITY SCHOLARSHIP NEWS
Last month we awarded a $1,000 in church scholarship to
Rachel House to pursue her college career. We want to thank
each of you who contributed to the Scholarship Fund. Without
your gifts these Church Scholarship Awards would not be
possible. Please continue to give to the Scholarship Fund.
In order to continually promote the Scholarship Program we wish to
promote the guidance for awarding Church Scholarships:
1. Applicants are active in the life of the congregation through
worship, receiving the sacraments, continuing education
(Sunday School, Bible Study, Campus Ministry programs),
youth events, and volunteer work.
2. Applicants are accepted or enrolled as a full time student to
attend classes on a campus of a Lutheran seminary, Lutheran
college, or other accredited colleges and universities.
3. Applicants are seeking a degree at one of the following
levels:
Associate Degree
Bachelor Degree
Master Degree
Ph D
4. Applicants may receive one scholarship from Trinity
Lutheran church for each degree
he/she is pursuing. If an applicant is not successful in
receiving a scholarship in a given year, he/she may apply the
following year.
We appreciate the generosity of all those who have given to the
Scholarship Program and ask for your continued support. Donations
to the Scholarship program should be made using the blue
designated fund envelopes or a plain envelope. Please indicate
Scholarship fund on either envelope.

God is everywhere
We are living in a world that is absolutely transparent, and God
is shining through it all the time. This is not just a fable or a
nice story. It is true. If we abandon ourselves to God and forget
ourselves, we see it sometimes, and we
see it maybe frequently. God shows
himself everywhere, in everything —
in people and in things and in nature and in events. It becomes
very obvious that God is everywhere and in everything and we
cannot be without him. It’s impossible. The only thing is that
we don’t see it.

HOSPITAL STAYS:
Federal law greatly restricts the disclosure of patient
information by hospitals. As a result, the pastor and church
office may not know that a church member has been admitted
to the hospital. If you are hospitalized and would like to
notify the pastor, it is important that you (or a family
member) inform the church office as soon as possible. Call
us at 762-6626. Remember, hospitals can no longer provide
this information for us.
TRINITY HAS CEMETERY PLOTS FOR SALE
Trinity has acquired 10 cemetery plots from past members and
is offering them for sale at a discount. There are 4 lots at
Arlington Park in Greenfield and 6 lots at Forest Hill in Oak
Creek. If interested, or know of someone who might be
interested, please contact the church office.
TENT RENTAL:
Trinity Lutheran owns a 20’ x 30’ tent that is available for
rental for $75.00. Be sure to keep this in mind for your next
family gathering! Check with the office to reserve a date.
