From the Pastor…

Have you ever built a sandcastle? Last summer, my family and I spent a day at a lake where we built sandcastles. It was all fun and games until water became involved. The castle started to erode and eventually was destroyed. It was not built on a firm foundation. My son and I also like to build with Legos. We have made some pretty neat creations, including castles and houses. Those creations were extremely sturdy because they were built on a firm foundation. Isn’t it true, when structures are built on good foundations they will stand? However, if they are built on poor foun-dations, they will fall. The same goes with faith. Listen to the words of Jesus in Matthew 7:24-27:

“Everyone then who hears these words of mine and does them will be like a wise man who built his house on the rock. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat on that house, but it did not fall, because it had been founded on the rock. And everyone who hears these words of mine and does not do them

will be like a foolish man who built his house on the sand. And the rain fell, and the floods came, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell, and great was the fall of it.”

When one’s faith is firmly built on the Rock of Jesus Christ and His word, we can withstand all the trials and tempta-tions of life. On the other hand, if we are not in God’s Word and grounded in Jesus, it is easy to fall completely apart when the difficulties of life take place. The good news is that it is never too late to read God’s Word and come to worship. When God’s Word is read, we get to know who He is and what He has done for us. Almighty God loves each and every one of us so much that He sent His one and only Son to die and rise for us to forgive our sins and give us salvation. When we come to church, we are then encouraged in the faith and given strength to meet the days ahead. I encourage you to join us for worship and, while you are here, join us for Bible Study. We have many options for worship and to study God’s Word. We would love to see you here, as we all seek to continue to be built on the Rock that is Jesus Christ. Blessings, Pastor Zach Holdorf

“The Vital Church ‘Twins’”

What is the health prognosis of our church? What does its future hold?

These pivotal questions can largely be answered by and tied to “twin” ministries of the congregation. We are referring to the overlapping ministries of “discipleship” and “stewardship.” Let’s explore this dynamic further and its practical implications in regard to the health and future of our church.

We begin with a bold statement—Discipleship is at the foundation of a vibrant church. This is tied to this defini-tion for “disciples”—“Passionate followers who not on-ly know Christ…but grow in Christ…and show Christ in their daily lives.”

Such persons are enthusiastic and energized when it comes to church. They are passionate followers of Christ with Him at the center of their daily lives. They faithfully live the “fruits of the Spirit”—“love, joy, peace, patience, kindness, gentleness and self-control” (Galatians 5:22-23a). These disciples desire to serve Christ with their full hearts!

That last sentence is a connecting link to “stewardship.” Regardless of whether we are looking at any of the “big three” elements—time, talents, treasury (or an added fourth element—testimony)--discipleship has a direct impact. Where there is passion, there is a desire to give! Giving has a natural connection to what is counter-cultural—serving others vs. self.

In contrast, stewardship falters when there is a lack of passionate disciples. Here we often find apathy as a cor-rupting force. We have members who are biblically-illiterate. We have occasional worshippers who give their time only when they get something in return. There is no commitment to the church, and they often run from giving. It needs to also be noted that guilt does not work to motivate such people to engage.

Healthy congregations place an emphasis on both of these “twin” ministries. Both are interwoven, and vital for spiritual growth to occur—that is also inspired by both discipleship and stewardship. It’s a win-win-win scenario—for activated disciples…the congregation…and for Christ—the ultimate Victor!

Help spread the word to your family, friends, and neighbors about the value of a Christ-centered education at Trinity! Lutheran schools are places of quality, activity, and

vitality.

Congregations are provided with opportunities to connect with their communities in unique ways.

Schools are a rich and vital component of the church body.

Schools impact the community through the arts with music and visual arts; athletics, as they com-pete in a Godly way with area school teams; and in connection with public, parochial, and private schools in their community working together to ed-ucate children.

Through it all, schools are a conduit for community connections where the Gospel message is shared.

National Lutheran Schools Week

The last week of January has been set aside by LCMS schools around our nation and the world as National Lutheran Schools week. We had a fun week of celebra-tion here at Trinity too.

National Lutheran Schools Week provides nearly 2,000 preschools, elementary schools, and high schools with the public opportunity to proclaim and celebrate God’s work among us in schools of The Lutheran Church—Missouri Synod.

We thank God for the opportunity to provide excellent academic preparation for the children we serve. We are most grateful for the opportunity to share Jesus’ amaz-ing love with children and their families.

National Lutheran Schools Week gives us an opportuni-ty to proclaim these great blessings within the commu-nities we serve.

Our schools are amazing incubators for faithful witness of God’s love for us through Christ by teachers and stu-dents alike.

Here is what our week looked like:

Monday: Rooted in Uniqueness—Wacky Dress Up day—All school devotion and sledding in the afternoon.

Tuesday: Rooted in Prayer—Chapel Family Color Day—Prayer walk, all school picture was taken, outreach project to support Kairos Prison Ministry.

Wednesday: Rooted in the Body of Christ—Dress your best day—Teacher-led chapel, McDonalds/Subway Lunch, teach-ers swap classes.

Thursday: Rooted in God’s Word—Class Identity day— McDonalds/Subway Lunch, All-school devotion, Bible Bee.

JOY—Just Older Youth “B-U-S-Y” Article

“The Alternative to B-U-S-Y” It is a crazy normal of our culture today. It is an element of most people’s lives. It is also the number one reason for disconnecting from active involvement in the church.

We are talking about our busy lives. So many demands and agendas to fulfill. So many choices are good op-tions…but few are really great (from God’s perspective).

We need to carefully consider this definition for B-U-S-Y —

Burdened

Under

Satan’s

Yoke

We now have a spiritual agenda to address. Are we giv-ing Satan room to corrupt God’s plan for our lives?

Let’s put this in context. Consider God’s role VS. Satan’s role, when it comes to Stewardship. Who is influencing the sharing of our time, talent, treasury, (and testimo-ny)? What would our calendars and checkbooks reveal when it comes to our priorities? Who is really in first place?

Do those who know you best know you are a Christian by the sharing that you do? What is your love response back to God?

May your giving reflect generosity and gratitude from a cheerful, loving heart! —Pastor Dan Kohn

“The Challenges of Living Longer” Article

“The Challenges in Life of Living Longer” Did you know that in 1900 there were three million people in the United States aged 65 and older? Today the num-ber is over 48 million and by 2030 (according to the ID Census Bureau) there will be more than 72 million people in the U.S. over 65 years of age. This is due to lower birth rates and people living longer. Believe it or not, today you may be 55 years old, but you are fast going on 65 and over. So what are the challenges of living longer? Yes, there are the normal changes and needs of aging, and the “Golden Years” are not always so bright and uplifting. Yes, there is physical decline, lost relationships, and loss of roles, in-come, housing, etc. Aging is a natural process of development that includes gains and losses. Regardless of age, we want to feel needed and be in relationships with both God and man. We want to feel safe, respected, and loved. One of the challenges of life’s journey is a search for meaning and purpose. One reason for this concern is that grow-ing older can be isolating and depressing for some. This may be due to physical limitations or failures of society, in-cluding the church, to provide direction and care. Children leave home, friends move away, or sickness and death can all take its toll. There is also the need for spiritual growth and faithful aging. Please note that this is a need for every age of our life’s journey. It has been said, “Old age is no place for sissies.” For many there is a fear of “old age”...health problems or fear of outliving their money or being a burden. There is also religious change, different worship and music styles, or even feeling isolated within their place of worship. The bottom line is that faithful aging means knowing and trusting God no matter how young or old you are. The responsibility of a Christ-centered congregation is to reach out and help all ages grow in their faith relationship with God and with one another. Never forget that God loves everyone, from the little children to the aging adults and all ages in between. The Bible clearly reminds us that God loves His creation...and that includes you and me and all mankind (John 3:16). Nowhere in the Bible does God take away His blessings from someone who is older than 55 or 65. Scripture is very clear about God’s saving and caring love for all people, however young or old we are. I suggest you take time to open your Bible and read the following Bible passages: - Psalm 37:25 - Ecclesiastes 4:13 - Psalm 71:9 - Isaiah 46:3a, 4 - Psalm 18 - 1 Timothy 5:1 - Proverbs 16:31 - Titus 2:2-3 - Proverbs 20:29 - Solomon 4:8-9 Every day is a God-given gift to fulfill our God-given opportunities regardless of age! —Pastor Dennis W. Pegorsch

Bible Studies at Trinity

Wednesdays at 9:00am in the Parlors & Sundays at 9:15am in the Upper Sanctuary

Led by Rev. Zach Holdorf & Phil Larson, Lay Minister

Choices, Choices Choices! We face them daily in our homes, at work, and in our relationships with others. But God never intended that we should face them alone or without guidance. In the book of Colossians God tells us “Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly, teaching and admonishing one another in all wisdom, singing psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, with thankful-ness in your hearts to God” (Col. 3:16). Letting the word of God dwell in us richly is the rock solid foundation that we must have to teach, to admonish, and to stand with one another as God’s people. Join us for this study as God teaches us about the spiritual battle we are in and how God equips us as individuals and as a church to make choices through which we will mature spiritually and be the light that God wants His church to be.

Sundays at 9:15am in the Bethany Room Led by Dan Mansk

In the books of Joshua and Judges, we see the fulfill-ment of God’s promise to his people as they enter the promised land of Canaan, and it becomes their land. But we also see that they drift away from the Lord, and they experience misery and social devastation. This is a re-markably contemporary message for us today. We often find ourselves drifting away from God as we decide how to handle the many opportunities and challenges that arise in our work. The message of Joshua and Judges is that God is always faithful, here and now, for us to re-turn to him and receive his blessings in our life and work. Come and grow in your faith in your Lord!

Sundays at 8:10am in the Spiritual Life Center Led by Brett Schwantes

Jesus says “If you abide in my word, you are truly my disciples, and you will know the truth, and the truth will set you free” (John 8:31-32). Knowing the truth is critical today because one of Satan’s tactics is to deceive us. He is a liar. Satan suggests that there are many paths to eternal life. We see that there are different, new teach-ings emerging from denominations that have been tra-ditionally looked at as Christian too. Join Brett for this study as he looks at some of the different teachings of religions and denominations today in light of the truth of God’s word. Equip yourself so you are not led astray!

“Freedom and Forgiveness” Led by Pastor Dan Kohn

In preparation for Lent, join a NEW Bible Study on the follow-ing Wednesday evenings: Febru-ary 13th, 20th & 27th from 6:30 to 7:30pm in the Parlors. The study will be on the theme of Freedom Found in Forgiveness.

Join us for Bible Study!

Youth Bible Study

10:15am, Room 204 (6th-12th Grade)

“Truly, truly, I say to you, we speak of what we know, and bear witness to what we have seen, but you do not receive our testimony.” –John 3:11

What are teens hearing? Is it the truth? Teens are bom-barded with false messages every day. But there’s good news! Teens desire to hear the complete truth! They yearn to hear the truth of the Gospel – the truth of Je-sus. Jesus’ words of truth resound throughout the Gos-pel of John. It’s only through the absolute source of truth, His Spirit and Word, that teens grasp and apply God’s truth to their lives.

The truth is out there! It’s found in God’s precious and holy Word! Join us on Sunday mornings as we walk to-gether through the Gospel of John!

WOMEN’S MORNING BIBLE STUDY

Financial Summary December Financials: December Tithes and Offerings: We came in at 91% of budget for Tithes and Offerings in December. We are bringing in an average of $10,000 per month less than budget this fiscal year, with the majority of that deficit hitting in October and November. We are spending about $10,000 per month less than budget by not having an Associate Pastor and a Minister of Music. This is not a desirable staffing solution, but we will not be able to support these roles without an increase.

We pay about $8,000 in monthly principal and interest. If we weren’t paying that, we would, in theory, have $8,000 per month to spend on ministry! Wouldn’t that be awesome? The December monthly principal and interest payment was paid primarily out of Debt Reduction, as budgeted.

We continue to be able to pay down additional principal on the existing debt through Reaching Up and Reaching Out. In December, we paid $1,603 in additional principal! Balances on the existing debt are as follows:

Endowment Loan: $182,307 Thrivent Loan: $660,874 TOTAL DEBT: $843,181

Please continue to pray for the future of Trinity – that we may be blessed to be a blessing to others in the community and beyond through a fruitful ministry to those we serve in the name of Jesus Christ. (John 15:5)

**If there is something specific you want to know or need clarification on with respect to financials, please do not hesitate to email Tina Dickens at [email protected].**

Would you like to know more about the School Choice program? The Wisconsin Parental School Choice Program is an important part of Trinity’s ministry to help children form a relationship with Christ! If you know of someone who may qualify for this program, please refer them to the school office for more information. There is a limited application period that will open in late Winter, closing in mid-Spring.

Trinity’s participation in the WPCP brings a designated dollar amount per student to Trinity Lutheran School. That dollar amount is about $7750 per full-time WPCP student per year. During the required audit process, we have to show that we have spent at least $7750 per student (every student) at Trinity. Let’s pretend that it costs only $7750 per student that we spend to educate a child at Trinity (it is actually about $8500/student). The breakdown is as follows:

So where does all of that WPCP money go? It goes directly to educate the children who benefit from the WPCP. There are 3 other pri-mary sources of funding for the school’s $1,137,404 yearly expense budget, which includes salaries and benefits, curriculum, technol-ogy, security, building and maintenance costs, and supplies. Those 3 primary sources of funding are tuition, Education Grant Fund, and the support from the congregation of Trinity Lutheran Church through Tithes and Offerings. If the school spends less than was budgeted in a given year on budgeted items, the church provides less support to get the school balance to a break-even point. Most fundraising, like the Legacy Auction and PTL-sponsored fundraisers, go to benefit the school through non-budgeted purchases as nee-ds arise. These are not general operational expenses, but special purchases that enhance the students’ overall experience at Trinity.

We do this with the riding mower and a brush attachment. If you’d like to be considered, please email [email protected] or call 715-842-0769.

2019 Offering Envelopes If you haven’t already, please pick up your envelopes outside the Sanctuary.

The Annual Penny War is coming up during the week of February 18-22. Student Council will have a table set up every morning that week from 7:20am-7:45am out-side the SLC and cafeteria. Can't make it during those times? Drop off your donation at any time during the day in the School Office! Make sure it is marked for the Penny War. Donations will again be going towards pro-jects in Nicaragua this year. Last year, the Penny War raised around $1500, which was used to build new bath-rooms and purchase new books, whiteboards, chairs, and other necessary supplies for a school in Nicaragua. Let's see if we can match or surpass that this year! Thank you for your continued prayers and support!
