FROM REV DIANE KRAUSZER
August 2015
Dearly Beloved
I grew up hearing the stories of the Old and New Testament over and
over again They are stories I still love to hear and that I love to tell
They are stories of faith that show God at work among Godrsquos people
As fewer people read the Bible these stories are being lost Many
people in our culture and in our churches no longer know the biblical
stories If they do know a few like Noah and the ark or David and
Goliath they donrsquot know how the stories connect to the rest of the
Bible The narrative lectionary is one way to hear the stories in their
narrative context From week to week in the fall of the year the stories
of the Old Testament are told in their order In earlier winter one
Gospel is followed from Jesusrsquos birth through his life to his death and
resurrection Then in the spring of the year the story of the early
church is told following Paulrsquos letters Following this pattern over the
course of four years the stories of the entire Bible are told

I would like Trinity to consider making the transition from the Revised Standard
Lectionary to the Narrative Lectionary this fall I want to tell you the old old stories
and explore with you the God and the faith in that God that is revealed through them
Please take a moment to read the information on the Narrative lectionary provided
below in this newsletter Pray with me as we seek discernment about making this
change
Peace
Pastor Diane
Coming soon to a church near you The Narrative Lectionary
The worship committee along with Pastor Diane is considering changing our lectionary
readings from Revised Common Lectionary to the Narrative Lectionary in the fall of
2015 Here is an explanation of the Narrative lectionary from Luther Seminary website
What is the narrative lectionary
The Narrative Lectionary is a four-year cycle of readings On the Sundays from
September through May each year the texts follow the sweep of the biblical story from
Creation through the early Christian church
The texts show the breadth and variety of voices within Scripture They invite people to
hear the stories of Abraham and Sarah Moses and the prophets Jesus and Paul
Listening to the many different voices within Scripture enriches preaching and the life of
faith
What are the readings
The texts include the major episodes in Scripture They are arranged in a narrative
sequence to help people see Scripture as a story that has coherence and a dynamic
movement
From September to mid-December the preaching texts begin with the early
chapters of Genesis move through the stories of Israelrsquos early history the
exodus the kings prophets exile and return
From Christmas to Easter there is sustained reading of one of the four gospels
From Easter to Pentecost the texts are chosen from Acts and Paulrsquos letters
Why these readings
Texts were selected that lead well to the proclamation of what God is doing The stories
tell of hope and disappointment suffering and redemption In all these varied contexts
we find God dealing with the complexities of human life Stories from the gospels differ
each year avoiding repetition and highlighting what is distinctive about each gospelrsquos
telling of the story of Jesus
The Church Year helped to shape the flow of the Narrative Lectionary Old Testament
readings move through the story of Godrsquos dealings with Israel and culminate in Advent
with the prophets who speak of longing and hope Readings from the gospels fit the
movement from Christmas and Epiphany to the Transfiguration Ash Wednesday Holy
Week and Easter Selections from the book of Acts and Paulrsquos letters trace the outward
movement of the resurrection message culminating on Pentecost with readings focusing
on the Spirit
How does it work in worship
Many churches find it helpful to read only one lesson each Sunday mdash Old Testament
texts in the fall and New Testament texts from Christmas through Pentecost

ATTENDING CHURCH Hebrews 1025 Ephesians 415-16
BC Central
The habit of attending church is important
We meet together weekly to help one
another live and deal with life In fact if
you think about all the ―one another
commandments in the Bible we canrsquot do
them alone Godrsquos design is for us to be
together We also shouldnrsquot confuse
attending church with our spiritual growth

GOD IS OPENING MORE
DOORS Institute of Lutheran Theology
Amazing This is the word used by Rev
Doug Morton Director of the Institute of
Lutheran Theologys Certificate Programs
God is opening doors in so many ways for ILT
and we are doing our best to walk through
them Rev Morton says that Ephesians 320 -
21 is taking on more and more meaning for him
as he sees God working through ILT
Now to him who is able to do far more
abundantly than all that we ask or think
according to the power at work within us to
him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus
throughout all generations forever and ever
Amen - Ephesians 320-21 (ESV)
I have always believed this to be true says
Rev Morton but it is amazing to see how far
more abundantly it is from Gods point of view
Its off any charts Ive seen
In addition to already teaching a group of
Sudanese pastors and church leaders in Sioux
Fall South Dakota ILT will begin teaching
another group in Omaha Nebraska this August
Possibilities for ILT to do this type of teaching
with immigrant and international communities
is opening up in such places as Des Moines amp
Cedar Rapids Iowa and Minneapolis-St Paul
Minnesota
This October a team from ILT will be going to
Ethiopia to teach Theology Instructors at the
Lutheran Church of South Sudans new
seminary in Gambela Ethiopia There are
possibilities opening up in other areas outside
North America
Other exciting things are in the works for the
Certificate Program and we will let you know
about them as they begin to take shape
In addition to all of this ILTs Graduate School
will begin its first Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
class this Fall ILT also offers the following
degree programs Master of Divinity (MDiv)
Master of Religion (MR) amp Master of Sacred
Theology (STM)
The Institute of Lutheran Theology is an
Independent Lutheran Seminary that teaches
students from many of the Lutheran groups as
well as students from other Christian
denominations It accomplishes this mainly
through live online education but also engages
in face-to-face classroom education
DEVOTION LUKE 1213-21
One of the resources God has entrusted to each person is money This parable
clearly portrays the danger of self-delusion that can occur in the use and
management of that money The rich man in the parable was blessed with a
farm that produced fine crops to the point the barns were overflowing Yet the
rich man was looking for more security so he built bigger barns for the yield
of future harvests
Was this rich man successful By all accounts at that time yes He had
accomplished what most people of his time had only dreamed of But through
this parable Jesus challenges the hearer not to think of oneself but to
recognize that treasures stored in this world are not rich toward God
Reading the text note how many times I and me are used How easy is it
to become infatuated with oneself
The example of wealth used in this parable has been lived out in many ways in
the centuries that followed In 1871 Mark Twain wrote a piece entitled The
Revised Catechism It talked about the hold money can have on a persons
life As excerpt reads as follows
What is the chief of man ndashto get rich
In what way ndashdishonestly if we can honestly if we must
Who is God the one and only true
Money is God Gold and Greenbacks and Stock-father son and ghosts of
same three persons in one these are the true and only God mighty and
supreme
The true test of our use of money as a resource entrusted to us is the lifestyle
we live In todays society it is often difficult to answer the question how much
is enough There is a cultural drive to obtain and accumulate We are blessed
that in the United States and some other countries this accumulation is
possible Yet in many countries it is not It seems that an abundance of things
supports a desire to want and have more Perhaps this is reflected in a giving
pattern that the higher the household income the less a household is likely to
return to God
What is your vision of enough Does it include serving God and help others
In this parable Jesus reminds us that God may come at any time and ask for an
accounting of our time talents and money Will you be prepared Being rich
toward God is worth more than all the barns in the world
Let us Pray Dear Lord help us to clearly see the monetary resources you
have entrusted May we discover through our faith how much is enough May
our gratitude be reflected in what we return to you And may we use these
gifts as a tool to serve God and help others Amen

Others want a reading from the Gospels during
the fall even though the Old Testament is the
main preaching text To make that possible brief
passages from the Gospels are chosen
to accompany (but not to replace) the Old
Testament readings in the fall for congregations
that find that helpful In the winter and spring
accompanying texts are taken from the Psalms
Who put this together
The Narrative Lectionary was initiated by
Profs Rolf Jacobson and Craig
Koester of Luther Seminary in partnership with
congregations across North America The
experiment began in 2010 and continues to grow
Why create this lectionary
Though the Revised Common Lectionary has
united the church in its reading of scripture and
has given much-needed structure it doesnrsquot
present scripture -- especially the Old Testament -
- in a way that helps people to become fluent in
the first language of faith The Narrative
Lectionary is an attempt to take nine months to do
just that
How do we implement it in our congregation
The more you surround yourself with others using
these readings over the next 9 months the better
Have your church council approve it so that it
can become a congregational project not just the
pastorrsquos initiative Get your text study group to
decide to use it so that the communal exploration
of scripture can continue during the year

WHERE ARE YOU MARK 645-52 BC CENTRAL Do you know that this very day you are in the middle
of an adventure The problem with adventures though
is that they are pretty horrific from time to time The
disciples were out in the middle of the Sea of Galilee
and what do they think they saw A ghost walking on
the water towards them who wouldnrsquot be afraid of
that Immediately though Jesus claims their fears He
deepened their understanding of who He was Does He
have that effect on you Christ has overcome the

THE KUWAA MISSION PRAYER LETTER
40 years ago May 1975 105 Kuwaa people were baptized into Christ Jesus in
Konjade where the Rev Richard Thompson amp family lived and worked as
missionaries The Christ movement started there and spread to other Kuwaa
towns Peace and joy reigned In 1989 that came to an end The Kuwaa
people suffered under the various rebel groups during the 14 years of civil war
Their homes and villages were destroyed Their farms burnt and looted In
2009 the Kuwaa Mission came into existence to help the Kuwaa people find
peace and joy again The mission planned to focus on helping the people help
themselves The goal is to help them rebuild the infrastructures of the villages
The first priority of the Mission was to help the villages dig their own wells
Too many children were dying because of bad water The Mission also helped
build a medical clinic in Kondesu The clinic will help the people of several
towns The mission held workshops to train the people about the advantage of
drinking and using good water and how to care for the wells and filters
Workshops were also held to train teachers and they were held to train church
leaders about teaching children and adults Bible stories and religious material
Plans to start building and rebuilding bridges and roads are now underway It
wonrsquot be cheap but desperately needed Better roads will definitely help the
Kuwaa people One of our volunteers has donated $6000 for this project if the
Mission matches his funds The Board of Directors is asking you to pray about
this need The more funds received by the Mission means more roads and
better bridges
The work will be much easier and cheaper if a road system is developed in the
chiefdom More villages can be reached and helped

GOD IS OPENING MORE
DOORS Institute of Lutheran Theology
Amazing This is the word used by Rev
Doug Morton Director of the Institute of
Lutheran Theologys Certificate Programs
God is opening doors in so many ways for ILT
and we are doing our best to walk through
them Rev Morton says that Ephesians 320 -
21 is taking on more and more meaning for him
as he sees God working through ILT
Now to him who is able to do far more
abundantly than all that we ask or think
according to the power at work within us to
him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus
throughout all generations forever and ever
Amen - Ephesians 320-21 (ESV)
I have always believed this to be true says
Rev Morton but it is amazing to see how far
more abundantly it is from Gods point of view
Its off any charts Ive seen
In addition to already teaching a group of
Sudanese pastors and church leaders in Sioux
Fall South Dakota ILT will begin teaching
another group in Omaha Nebraska this August
Possibilities for ILT to do this type of teaching
with immigrant and international communities
is opening up in such places as Des Moines amp
Cedar Rapids Iowa and Minneapolis-St Paul
Minnesota
This October a team from ILT will be going to
Ethiopia to teach Theology Instructors at the
Lutheran Church of South Sudans new
seminary in Gambela Ethiopia There are
possibilities opening up in other areas outside
North America
Other exciting things are in the works for the
Certificate Program and we will let you know
about them as they begin to take shape
In addition to all of this ILTs Graduate School
will begin its first Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
class this Fall ILT also offers the following
degree programs Master of Divinity (MDiv)
Master of Religion (MR) amp Master of Sacred
Theology (STM)
The Institute of Lutheran Theology is an
Independent Lutheran Seminary that teaches
students from many of the Lutheran groups as
well as students from other Christian
denominations It accomplishes this mainly
through live online education but also engages
in face-to-face classroom education
DEVOTION LUKE 1213-21
One of the resources God has entrusted to each person is money This parable
clearly portrays the danger of self-delusion that can occur in the use and
management of that money The rich man in the parable was blessed with a
farm that produced fine crops to the point the barns were overflowing Yet the
rich man was looking for more security so he built bigger barns for the yield
of future harvests
Was this rich man successful By all accounts at that time yes He had
accomplished what most people of his time had only dreamed of But through
this parable Jesus challenges the hearer not to think of oneself but to
recognize that treasures stored in this world are not rich toward God
Reading the text note how many times I and me are used How easy is it
to become infatuated with oneself
The example of wealth used in this parable has been lived out in many ways in
the centuries that followed In 1871 Mark Twain wrote a piece entitled The
Revised Catechism It talked about the hold money can have on a persons
life As excerpt reads as follows
What is the chief of man ndashto get rich
In what way ndashdishonestly if we can honestly if we must
Who is God the one and only true
Money is God Gold and Greenbacks and Stock-father son and ghosts of
same three persons in one these are the true and only God mighty and
supreme
The true test of our use of money as a resource entrusted to us is the lifestyle
we live In todays society it is often difficult to answer the question how much
is enough There is a cultural drive to obtain and accumulate We are blessed
that in the United States and some other countries this accumulation is
possible Yet in many countries it is not It seems that an abundance of things
supports a desire to want and have more Perhaps this is reflected in a giving
pattern that the higher the household income the less a household is likely to
return to God

WHERE ARE YOU MARK 645-52 BC CENTRAL Do you know that this very day you are in the middle
of an adventure The problem with adventures though
is that they are pretty horrific from time to time The
disciples were out in the middle of the Sea of Galilee
and what do they think they saw A ghost walking on
the water towards them who wouldnrsquot be afraid of
that Immediately though Jesus claims their fears He
deepened their understanding of who He was Does He
have that effect on you Christ has overcome the
World so letrsquos try and focus on Him even in the
middle of terrifying circumstances For the month In
moments of horror remember that He is with you
FROM THE TREASURER AND
FINANCIAL SECRETARY AT
TRINITY
Please help us in the following manner when
designating your offerings to insure they get into
the proper funds
Even though we have a separate offering
basket for Designated Offerings and
the Childrenrsquos Offering we kindly ask
that you also write on your check how
you would like this designated ie
Childrenrsquos Offering Raphael Kenya
Building Maintenance Property Taxes
etc
The same with your general tithe
simply writing ―general in the check
memo is sufficient
Please do not include both general and
designated funds on the same check
These funds go into separate bank
accounts and we need to assure the
funds are correct both for accounting
reasons and for your year-end giving
statement
Also property taxes are due in August We
would appreciate extra tithes to assist with this if
you are able
Thank you very much for all of your generous
support for the ministries of Trinity Lutheran
Church

GOD IS OPENING MORE
DOORS Institute of Lutheran Theology
Amazing This is the word used by Rev
Doug Morton Director of the Institute of
Lutheran Theologys Certificate Programs
God is opening doors in so many ways for ILT
and we are doing our best to walk through
them Rev Morton says that Ephesians 320 -
21 is taking on more and more meaning for him
as he sees God working through ILT
Now to him who is able to do far more
abundantly than all that we ask or think
according to the power at work within us to
him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus
throughout all generations forever and ever
Amen - Ephesians 320-21 (ESV)
I have always believed this to be true says
Rev Morton but it is amazing to see how far
more abundantly it is from Gods point of view
Its off any charts Ive seen
In addition to already teaching a group of
Sudanese pastors and church leaders in Sioux
Fall South Dakota ILT will begin teaching
another group in Omaha Nebraska this August
Possibilities for ILT to do this type of teaching
with immigrant and international communities
is opening up in such places as Des Moines amp
Cedar Rapids Iowa and Minneapolis-St Paul
Minnesota
This October a team from ILT will be going to
Ethiopia to teach Theology Instructors at the
Lutheran Church of South Sudans new
seminary in Gambela Ethiopia There are
possibilities opening up in other areas outside
North America
Other exciting things are in the works for the
Certificate Program and we will let you know
about them as they begin to take shape
In addition to all of this ILTs Graduate School
will begin its first Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
class this Fall ILT also offers the following
degree programs Master of Divinity (MDiv)
Master of Religion (MR) amp Master of Sacred
Theology (STM)
The Institute of Lutheran Theology is an
Independent Lutheran Seminary that teaches
students from many of the Lutheran groups as
well as students from other Christian
denominations It accomplishes this mainly
through live online education but also engages
in face-to-face classroom education
DEVOTION LUKE 1213-21
One of the resources God has entrusted to each person is money This parable
clearly portrays the danger of self-delusion that can occur in the use and
management of that money The rich man in the parable was blessed with a
farm that produced fine crops to the point the barns were overflowing Yet the
rich man was looking for more security so he built bigger barns for the yield
of future harvests
Was this rich man successful By all accounts at that time yes He had
accomplished what most people of his time had only dreamed of But through
this parable Jesus challenges the hearer not to think of oneself but to
recognize that treasures stored in this world are not rich toward God
Reading the text note how many times I and me are used How easy is it
to become infatuated with oneself
The example of wealth used in this parable has been lived out in many ways in
the centuries that followed In 1871 Mark Twain wrote a piece entitled The
Revised Catechism It talked about the hold money can have on a persons
life As excerpt reads as follows
What is the chief of man ndashto get rich
In what way ndashdishonestly if we can honestly if we must
Who is God the one and only true
Money is God Gold and Greenbacks and Stock-father son and ghosts of
same three persons in one these are the true and only God mighty and
supreme
The true test of our use of money as a resource entrusted to us is the lifestyle
we live In todays society it is often difficult to answer the question how much
is enough There is a cultural drive to obtain and accumulate We are blessed
that in the United States and some other countries this accumulation is
possible Yet in many countries it is not It seems that an abundance of things
supports a desire to want and have more Perhaps this is reflected in a giving
pattern that the higher the household income the less a household is likely to
return to God

ASSISTIVE HEARING HELP
If you are hearing impaired ask the usher at church for a listening device
Article continued from page 2B
Others want a reading from the Gospels during
the fall even though the Old Testament is the
main preaching text To make that possible brief
passages from the Gospels are chosen
to accompany (but not to replace) the Old
Testament readings in the fall for congregations
that find that helpful In the winter and spring
accompanying texts are taken from the Psalms
Who put this together
The Narrative Lectionary was initiated by
Profs Rolf Jacobson and Craig
Koester of Luther Seminary in partnership with
congregations across North America The
experiment began in 2010 and continues to grow
Why create this lectionary
Though the Revised Common Lectionary has
united the church in its reading of scripture and
has given much-needed structure it doesnrsquot
present scripture -- especially the Old Testament -
- in a way that helps people to become fluent in
the first language of faith The Narrative
Lectionary is an attempt to take nine months to do
just that
How do we implement it in our congregation
The more you surround yourself with others using
these readings over the next 9 months the better
Have your church council approve it so that it
can become a congregational project not just the
pastorrsquos initiative Get your text study group to
decide to use it so that the communal exploration
of scripture can continue during the year

PICNICING AT THE CHURCH The food was awesome and the visiting great as
always ) Jennifer S

Please help us in the following manner when
designating your offerings to insure they get into
the proper funds
Even though we have a separate offering
basket for Designated Offerings and
the Childrenrsquos Offering we kindly ask
that you also write on your check how
you would like this designated ie
Childrenrsquos Offering Raphael Kenya
Building Maintenance Property Taxes
etc
The same with your general tithe
simply writing ―general in the check
memo is sufficient
Please do not include both general and
designated funds on the same check
These funds go into separate bank
accounts and we need to assure the
funds are correct both for accounting
reasons and for your year-end giving
statement
Also property taxes are due in August We
would appreciate extra tithes to assist with this if
you are able
Thank you very much for all of your generous
support for the ministries of Trinity Lutheran

GOD IS OPENING MORE
DOORS Institute of Lutheran Theology
Amazing This is the word used by Rev
Doug Morton Director of the Institute of
Lutheran Theologys Certificate Programs
God is opening doors in so many ways for ILT
and we are doing our best to walk through
them Rev Morton says that Ephesians 320 -
21 is taking on more and more meaning for him
as he sees God working through ILT
Now to him who is able to do far more
abundantly than all that we ask or think
according to the power at work within us to
him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus
throughout all generations forever and ever
Amen - Ephesians 320-21 (ESV)
I have always believed this to be true says
Rev Morton but it is amazing to see how far
more abundantly it is from Gods point of view
Its off any charts Ive seen
In addition to already teaching a group of
Sudanese pastors and church leaders in Sioux
Fall South Dakota ILT will begin teaching
another group in Omaha Nebraska this August
Possibilities for ILT to do this type of teaching
with immigrant and international communities
is opening up in such places as Des Moines amp
Cedar Rapids Iowa and Minneapolis-St Paul
Minnesota
This October a team from ILT will be going to
Ethiopia to teach Theology Instructors at the
Lutheran Church of South Sudans new
seminary in Gambela Ethiopia There are
possibilities opening up in other areas outside
North America
Other exciting things are in the works for the
Certificate Program and we will let you know
about them as they begin to take shape
In addition to all of this ILTs Graduate School
will begin its first Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
class this Fall ILT also offers the following
degree programs Master of Divinity (MDiv)
Master of Religion (MR) amp Master of Sacred
Theology (STM)
The Institute of Lutheran Theology is an
Independent Lutheran Seminary that teaches
students from many of the Lutheran groups as
well as students from other Christian
denominations It accomplishes this mainly
through live online education but also engages
in face-to-face classroom education
DEVOTION LUKE 1213-21
One of the resources God has entrusted to each person is money This parable
clearly portrays the danger of self-delusion that can occur in the use and
management of that money The rich man in the parable was blessed with a
farm that produced fine crops to the point the barns were overflowing Yet the
rich man was looking for more security so he built bigger barns for the yield
of future harvests
Was this rich man successful By all accounts at that time yes He had
accomplished what most people of his time had only dreamed of But through
this parable Jesus challenges the hearer not to think of oneself but to
recognize that treasures stored in this world are not rich toward God
Reading the text note how many times I and me are used How easy is it
to become infatuated with oneself
The example of wealth used in this parable has been lived out in many ways in
the centuries that followed In 1871 Mark Twain wrote a piece entitled The
Revised Catechism It talked about the hold money can have on a persons
life As excerpt reads as follows
What is the chief of man ndashto get rich
In what way ndashdishonestly if we can honestly if we must
Who is God the one and only true
Money is God Gold and Greenbacks and Stock-father son and ghosts of
same three persons in one these are the true and only God mighty and
supreme
The true test of our use of money as a resource entrusted to us is the lifestyle
we live In todays society it is often difficult to answer the question how much
is enough There is a cultural drive to obtain and accumulate We are blessed
that in the United States and some other countries this accumulation is
possible Yet in many countries it is not It seems that an abundance of things
supports a desire to want and have more Perhaps this is reflected in a giving
pattern that the higher the household income the less a household is likely to
return to God

GOD IS OPENING MORE
DOORS Institute of Lutheran Theology
Amazing This is the word used by Rev
Doug Morton Director of the Institute of
Lutheran Theologys Certificate Programs
God is opening doors in so many ways for ILT
and we are doing our best to walk through
them Rev Morton says that Ephesians 320 -
21 is taking on more and more meaning for him
as he sees God working through ILT
Now to him who is able to do far more
abundantly than all that we ask or think
according to the power at work within us to
him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus
throughout all generations forever and ever
Amen - Ephesians 320-21 (ESV)
I have always believed this to be true says
Rev Morton but it is amazing to see how far
more abundantly it is from Gods point of view
Its off any charts Ive seen
In addition to already teaching a group of
Sudanese pastors and church leaders in Sioux
Fall South Dakota ILT will begin teaching
another group in Omaha Nebraska this August
Possibilities for ILT to do this type of teaching
with immigrant and international communities
is opening up in such places as Des Moines amp
Cedar Rapids Iowa and Minneapolis-St Paul
Minnesota
This October a team from ILT will be going to
Ethiopia to teach Theology Instructors at the
Lutheran Church of South Sudans new
seminary in Gambela Ethiopia There are
possibilities opening up in other areas outside
North America
Other exciting things are in the works for the
Certificate Program and we will let you know
about them as they begin to take shape
In addition to all of this ILTs Graduate School
will begin its first Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
class this Fall ILT also offers the following
degree programs Master of Divinity (MDiv)
Master of Religion (MR) amp Master of Sacred
Theology (STM)
The Institute of Lutheran Theology is an
Independent Lutheran Seminary that teaches
students from many of the Lutheran groups as
well as students from other Christian
denominations It accomplishes this mainly
through live online education but also engages
in face-to-face classroom education
DEVOTION LUKE 1213-21
One of the resources God has entrusted to each person is money This parable
clearly portrays the danger of self-delusion that can occur in the use and
management of that money The rich man in the parable was blessed with a
farm that produced fine crops to the point the barns were overflowing Yet the
rich man was looking for more security so he built bigger barns for the yield
of future harvests
Was this rich man successful By all accounts at that time yes He had
accomplished what most people of his time had only dreamed of But through
this parable Jesus challenges the hearer not to think of oneself but to
recognize that treasures stored in this world are not rich toward God
Reading the text note how many times I and me are used How easy is it
to become infatuated with oneself
The example of wealth used in this parable has been lived out in many ways in
the centuries that followed In 1871 Mark Twain wrote a piece entitled The
Revised Catechism It talked about the hold money can have on a persons
life As excerpt reads as follows
What is the chief of man ndashto get rich
In what way ndashdishonestly if we can honestly if we must
Who is God the one and only true
Money is God Gold and Greenbacks and Stock-father son and ghosts of
same three persons in one these are the true and only God mighty and
supreme
The true test of our use of money as a resource entrusted to us is the lifestyle
we live In todays society it is often difficult to answer the question how much
is enough There is a cultural drive to obtain and accumulate We are blessed
that in the United States and some other countries this accumulation is
possible Yet in many countries it is not It seems that an abundance of things
supports a desire to want and have more Perhaps this is reflected in a giving
pattern that the higher the household income the less a household is likely to
return to God

GOD IS OPENING MORE
DOORS Institute of Lutheran Theology
Amazing This is the word used by Rev
Doug Morton Director of the Institute of
Lutheran Theologys Certificate Programs
God is opening doors in so many ways for ILT
and we are doing our best to walk through
them Rev Morton says that Ephesians 320 -
21 is taking on more and more meaning for him
as he sees God working through ILT
Now to him who is able to do far more
abundantly than all that we ask or think
according to the power at work within us to
him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus
throughout all generations forever and ever
Amen - Ephesians 320-21 (ESV)
I have always believed this to be true says
Rev Morton but it is amazing to see how far
more abundantly it is from Gods point of view
Its off any charts Ive seen
In addition to already teaching a group of
Sudanese pastors and church leaders in Sioux
Fall South Dakota ILT will begin teaching
another group in Omaha Nebraska this August
Possibilities for ILT to do this type of teaching
with immigrant and international communities
is opening up in such places as Des Moines amp
Cedar Rapids Iowa and Minneapolis-St Paul
Minnesota
This October a team from ILT will be going to
Ethiopia to teach Theology Instructors at the
Lutheran Church of South Sudans new
seminary in Gambela Ethiopia There are
possibilities opening up in other areas outside
North America
Other exciting things are in the works for the
Certificate Program and we will let you know
about them as they begin to take shape
In addition to all of this ILTs Graduate School
will begin its first Doctor of Ministry (DMin)
class this Fall ILT also offers the following
degree programs Master of Divinity (MDiv)
Master of Religion (MR) amp Master of Sacred
Theology (STM)
The Institute of Lutheran Theology is an
Independent Lutheran Seminary that teaches
students from many of the Lutheran groups as
well as students from other Christian
denominations It accomplishes this mainly
through live online education but also engages
in face-to-face classroom education
DEVOTION LUKE 1213-21
One of the resources God has entrusted to each person is money This parable
clearly portrays the danger of self-delusion that can occur in the use and
management of that money The rich man in the parable was blessed with a
farm that produced fine crops to the point the barns were overflowing Yet the
rich man was looking for more security so he built bigger barns for the yield
of future harvests
Was this rich man successful By all accounts at that time yes He had
accomplished what most people of his time had only dreamed of But through
this parable Jesus challenges the hearer not to think of oneself but to
recognize that treasures stored in this world are not rich toward God
Reading the text note how many times I and me are used How easy is it
to become infatuated with oneself
The example of wealth used in this parable has been lived out in many ways in
the centuries that followed In 1871 Mark Twain wrote a piece entitled The
Revised Catechism It talked about the hold money can have on a persons
life As excerpt reads as follows
What is the chief of man ndashto get rich
In what way ndashdishonestly if we can honestly if we must
Who is God the one and only true
Money is God Gold and Greenbacks and Stock-father son and ghosts of
same three persons in one these are the true and only God mighty and
supreme
The true test of our use of money as a resource entrusted to us is the lifestyle
we live In todays society it is often difficult to answer the question how much
is enough There is a cultural drive to obtain and accumulate We are blessed
that in the United States and some other countries this accumulation is
possible Yet in many countries it is not It seems that an abundance of things
supports a desire to want and have more Perhaps this is reflected in a giving
pattern that the higher the household income the less a household is likely to
return to God
What is your vision of enough Does it include serving God and help others
In this parable Jesus reminds us that God may come at any time and ask for an
accounting of our time talents and money Will you be prepared Being rich
toward God is worth more than all the barns in the world
Let us Pray Dear Lord help us to clearly see the monetary resources you
have entrusted May we discover through our faith how much is enough May
our gratitude be reflected in what we return to you And may we use these
gifts as a tool to serve God and help others Amen

Others want a reading from the Gospels during
the fall even though the Old Testament is the
main preaching text To make that possible brief
passages from the Gospels are chosen
to accompany (but not to replace) the Old
Testament readings in the fall for congregations
that find that helpful In the winter and spring
accompanying texts are taken from the Psalms
Who put this together
The Narrative Lectionary was initiated by
Profs Rolf Jacobson and Craig
Koester of Luther Seminary in partnership with
congregations across North America The
experiment began in 2010 and continues to grow
Why create this lectionary
Though the Revised Common Lectionary has
united the church in its reading of scripture and
has given much-needed structure it doesnrsquot
present scripture -- especially the Old Testament -
- in a way that helps people to become fluent in
the first language of faith The Narrative
Lectionary is an attempt to take nine months to do
just that
How do we implement it in our congregation
The more you surround yourself with others using
these readings over the next 9 months the better
Have your church council approve it so that it
can become a congregational project not just the
pastorrsquos initiative Get your text study group to
decide to use it so that the communal exploration
of scripture can continue during the year

of an adventure The problem with adventures though
is that they are pretty horrific from time to time The
disciples were out in the middle of the Sea of Galilee
and what do they think they saw A ghost walking on
the water towards them who wouldnrsquot be afraid of
that Immediately though Jesus claims their fears He
deepened their understanding of who He was Does He

If you are hearing impaired ask the usher at church for a listening device
Article continued from page 2B
Others want a reading from the Gospels during
the fall even though the Old Testament is the
main preaching text To make that possible brief
passages from the Gospels are chosen
to accompany (but not to replace) the Old
Testament readings in the fall for congregations
that find that helpful In the winter and spring
accompanying texts are taken from the Psalms
Who put this together
The Narrative Lectionary was initiated by
Profs Rolf Jacobson and Craig
Koester of Luther Seminary in partnership with
congregations across North America The
experiment began in 2010 and continues to grow
Why create this lectionary
Though the Revised Common Lectionary has
united the church in its reading of scripture and
has given much-needed structure it doesnrsquot
present scripture -- especially the Old Testament -
- in a way that helps people to become fluent in
the first language of faith The Narrative
Lectionary is an attempt to take nine months to do
just that
How do we implement it in our congregation
The more you surround yourself with others using
these readings over the next 9 months the better
Have your church council approve it so that it
can become a congregational project not just the
pastorrsquos initiative Get your text study group to
decide to use it so that the communal exploration
of scripture can continue during the year

PICNICING AT THE CHURCH The food was awesome and the visiting great as
