(8am – See below or LSB 268) Emalynne Rose Blakesley

When candidates are unable to speak for themselves, the sponsors answer the questions on their behalf.

P In the name of the Father and of the T Son and of the Holy Spirit.

C Amen.

P Dearly beloved, Christ our Lord says in the last chapter of Matthew, “All authority in

heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Therefore go and make disciples of all nations,

baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.” In the last

chapter of Mark our Lord promises, “Whoever believes and is baptized will be saved.” And

the apostle Peter has written, “Baptism now saves you.”

The Word of God also teaches that we are all conceived and born sinful and are under the

power of the devil until Christ claims us as His own. We would be lost forever unless

delivered from sin, death, and everlasting condemnation. But the Father of all mercy and

grace has sent His Son Jesus Christ, who atoned for the sin of the whole world, that

whoever believes in Him should not perish but have eternal life.

The pastor addresses each candidate:

P How is this child named?

R [Finn Arthur Traub / Emalynne Rose Blakesley]

The pastor makes the sign of the holy cross upon the forehead and heart of each candidate while saying:

P [Finn / Emalynne], receive the sign of the holy cross both upon your T forehead and upon

your T heart to mark you as one redeemed by Christ the crucified.

P Let us pray.

Almighty and eternal God, according to Your strict judgment You condemned the

unbelieving world through the flood, yet according to Your great mercy You preserved

believing Noah and his family, eight souls in all. You drowned hard-hearted Pharaoh and all

his host in the Red Sea, yet led Your people Israel through the water on dry ground,

foreshadowing this washing of Your Holy Baptism. Through the Baptism in the Jordan of

Your beloved Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, You sanctified and instituted all waters to be a

blessed flood and a lavish washing away of sin.

We pray that You would behold [Finn / Emalynne] according to Your boundless mercy and

bless [him/her] with true faith by the Holy Spirit, that through this saving flood all sin in

[him/her], which has been inherited from Adam and which [he himself / she herself] has

committed since, would be drowned and die. Grant that [he/she] be kept safe and secure in

the holy ark of the Christian Church, being separated from the multitude of unbelievers and

serving Your name at all times with a fervent spirit and a joyful hope, so that, with all

believers in Your promise, [he/she] would be declared worthy of eternal life; through Jesus

Christ, our Lord.

C Amen.

P From ancient times the Church has observed the custom of appointing sponsors for

baptismal candidates and catechumens. In the Evangelical Lutheran Church sponsors are to

confess the faith expressed in the Apostles’ Creed and taught in the Small Catechism. They

are, whenever possible, to witness the Baptism of those they sponsor. They are to pray for

them, support them in their ongoing instruction and nurture in the Christian faith, and

encourage them toward the faithful reception of the Lord’s Supper. They are at all times to

be examples to them of the holy life of faith in Christ and love for the neighbor.

3

P Is it your intention to serve [Finn / Emalynne] as sponsors in the Christian faith?

R Yes, with the help of God.

P God enable you both to will and to do this faithful and loving work and with His grace

fulfill what we are unable to do.

C Amen.

P Hear the Holy Gospel according to St. Mark.

They brought young children to [Jesus] that He might touch them; but the disciples rebuked

those who brought them. But when Jesus saw it, He was greatly displeased and said to

them, “Let the little children come to Me, and do not forbid them; for of such is the

kingdom of God. Assuredly, I say to you, whoever does not receive the kingdom of God as

a little child will by no means enter it.” And He took them up in His arms, put His hands on

them, and blessed them.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

The pastor places his hands on the head(s) of the candidate(s), and the congregation joins in praying:

C Our Father who art in heaven, hallowed be Thy name,

Thy kingdom come, Thy will be done on earth as it is in heaven;

give us this day our daily bread;

and forgive us our trespasses as we forgive those who trespass against us;

and lead us not into temptation, but deliver us from evil.

For Thine is the kingdom and the power and the glory forever and ever. Amen.

P The Lord preserve your coming in and your going out from this time forth and even T

forevermore.

C Amen.

The pastor addresses the candidate(s) and asks the following questions:

P [Finn / Emalynne], do you renounce the devil?

R Yes, I renounce him.

P Do you renounce all his works?

R Yes, I renounce them.

P Do you renounce all his ways?

R Yes, I renounce them.

P Do you believe in God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth?

R Yes, I believe.

P Do you believe in Jesus Christ, His only Son, our Lord, who was conceived by the Holy

Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died and was

Page 5: Trinity Lutheran Church

buried; He descended into hell; the third day He rose again from the dead; He ascended into

heaven and sits at the right hand of God the Father Almighty; from thence He will come to

judge the living and the dead?

R Yes, I believe.

P Do you believe in the Holy Spirit, the holy Christian Church, the communion of saints, the

forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting?

R Yes, I believe.

P [Finn / Emalynne], do you desire to be baptized?

R Yes, I do.

The pastor pours water three times on the head of each candidate while saying:

P [Finn / Emalynne], I baptize you in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy

Spirit.

C Amen.

The pastor places his hands on the head of the newly baptized while saying:

P The almighty God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has given you the new birth of

water and of the Spirit and has forgiven you all your sins, strengthen you with His grace to

life T everlasting.

C Amen.

The pastor may light a baptismal candle from the paschal candle and give it to the newly baptized while

saying:

P Receive this burning light to show that you have received Christ who is the Light of the

world. Live always in the light of Christ, and be ever watchful for His coming, that you may

meet Him with joy and enter with Him into the marriage feast of the Lamb in His kingdom,

which shall have no end.

The newly baptized may be welcomed with the following:

P In Holy Baptism God the Father has made you a member of His Son, our Lord Jesus Christ,

and an heir with us of all the treasures of heaven in the one holy Christian and apostolic

Church. We receive you in Jesus’ name as our [brother/sister] in Christ, that together we

might hear His Word, receive His gifts, and proclaim the praises of Him who called us out

of darkness into His marvelous light.

C Amen. We welcome you in the name of the Lord.

P Let us pray.

Almighty and most merciful God and Father, we thank and praise You that You graciously

preserve and enlarge Your family and have granted [Finn / Emalynne] the new birth in

Holy Baptism and made [him/ her] a member of Your Son, our Lord Jesus Christ, and an

heir of Your heavenly kingdom. We humbly implore You that, as [he/she] has now become

Your child, You would keep [him/her] in [his/her] baptismal grace, that according to Your

Page 6: Trinity Lutheran Church

good pleasure [he/she] may faithfully grow to lead a godly life to the praise and honor of

Your holy name and finally, with all Your saints, obtain the promised inheritance in heaven;

through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C Amen.

P Peace T be with you.

C Amen.

Confession and Absolution

P Let us then confess our sins to God, our merciful Father.

C O most merciful God, we confess to You and before one another that we have sinned

against You in our thoughts, words, and actions. We have not loved You as we ought,

nor have we loved our neighbors as ourselves. We confess that we often place our

trust in things or ourselves, even above You. We confess silently those things which

hinder us from trusting in You. Forgive our sins, we pray, for the sake of Jesus Christ,

our Lord. Heal us, renew us, and empower us to trust in You above all things. Amen.

P Put your trust in the Lord, and be confident of His love for you. As a called and ordained

servant of the Word, and at the command and promise of my Lord Jesus Christ, I forgive

you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit. Your

sins are removed from you as far as the east is from the west. Serve the Lord with gladness,

and trust only in Him!

C Amen.

Introit

P On the glorious splendor of your majesty, and on your wondrous works, I will meditate.

C I will extol you, my God and King, and bless your name forever and ever.

P Every day I will bless you and praise your name forever and ever.

C Great is the Lord, and greatly to be praised, and his greatness is unsearchable.

P They shall speak of the might of your awesome deeds, and I will declare your greatness.

C They shall pour forth the fame of your abundant goodness and shall sing aloud of your

righteousness.

C Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the

beginning, is now, and will be forever. Amen

Kyrie (Sung to the hymn tune Amazing Grace)

Have mercy on your people, Lord.

Have Mercy, Christ, our King.

Renew us by your mercy, Lord;

Accept the prayers we bring.

Gloria (Sung to the hymn tune Hark! The Herald Angels Sing)

1 "Glory be to God on high!" 2 Jesus Christ, the Father's Son,

This is now our joyful cry. Sole-begotten, holy One,

Peace to all who live on earth, Born on earth from realms on high,

Grace and favor for new birth. Born true man for us to die,

You we praise and glorify, Lamb of God, you take away

Worship you, O Lord most high. This world's sin: Grant peace we pray.

Gracious Father, heav'nly King With the Spirit, you alone

To your name alone we sing; Are most high, O God the Son,

Praise the glory of your name, And the Father, God above,

Now and evermore the same! Praise we now your glorious love.

Old Testament Reading Deuteronomy 4:1–2, 6–9

“Now, O Israel, listen to the statutes and the just decrees that I am teaching you, and do them,

that you may live, and go in and take possession of the land that the LORD, the God of your

fathers, is giving you. You shall not add to the word that I command you, nor take from it, that

you may keep the commandments of the LORD your God that I command you. . . .

Keep them and do them, for that will be your wisdom and your understanding in the sight of

the peoples, who, when they hear all these statutes, will say, ‘Surely this great nation is a wise

and understanding people.’ For what great nation is there that has a god so near to it as the LORD

our God is to us, whenever we call upon him? And what great nation is there, that has statutes

and just decrees so righteous as all this law that I set before you today?

“Only take care, and keep your soul diligently, lest you forget the things that your eyes have

seen, and lest they depart from your heart all the days of your life. Make them known to your

children and your children’s children.”

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Epistle Ephesians 6:10–20

Finally, be strong in the Lord and in the strength of his might. Put on the whole armor of God,

that you may be able to stand against the schemes of the devil. For we do not wrestle against

flesh and blood, but against the rulers, against the authorities, against the cosmic powers over

this present darkness, against the spiritual forces of evil in the heavenly places. Therefore take up

the whole armor of God, that you may be able to withstand in the evil day, and having done all,

to stand firm. Stand therefore, having fastened on the belt of truth, and having put on the

breastplate of righteousness, and, as shoes for your feet, having put on the readiness given by the

gospel of peace. In all circumstances take up the shield of faith, with which you can extinguish

all the flaming darts of the evil one; and take the helmet of salvation, and the sword of the Spirit,

which is the word of God, praying at all times in the Spirit, with all prayer and supplication. To

that end keep alert with all perseverance, making supplication for all the saints, and also for me,

Page 8: Trinity Lutheran Church

that words may be given to me in opening my mouth boldly to proclaim the mystery of the

gospel, for which I am an ambassador in chains, that I may declare it boldly, as I ought to speak.

P This is the Word of the Lord.

C Thanks be to God.

Holy Gospel Mark 7:14–23

P The Holy Gospel according to St. Mark, the seventh chapter.

C Glory to You, O Lord.

[Jesus] called the people to him again and said to them, “Hear me, all of you, and understand:

There is nothing outside a person that by going into him can defile him, but the things that come

out of a person are what defile him.” And when he had entered the house and left the people, his

disciples asked him about the parable. And he said to them, “Then are you also without

understanding? Do you not see that whatever goes into a person from outside cannot defile him,

since it enters not his heart but his stomach, and is expelled?” (Thus he declared all foods clean.)

And he said, “What comes out of a person is what defiles him. For from within, out of the heart

of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, coveting, wickedness,

deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. All these evil things come from within, and

they defile a person.”

P This is the Gospel of the Lord.

C Praise to You, O Christ.

566 By Grace I’m Saved

Page 9: Trinity Lutheran Church

5 By grace to timid hearts that tremble, 6 By grace! On this I’ll rest when dying;

In tribulation’s furnace tried, In Jesus’ promise I rejoice;

By grace, in spite of fear and trouble, For though I know my heart’s condition,

The Father’s heart is open wide. I also know my Savior’s voice.

Where could I help and strength secure My heart is glad, all grief has flown

If grace were not my anchor sure? Since I am saved by grace alone. Tune and text: Public domain

P Into Your hands, O Lord, we commend all for whom we pray, trusting in Your mercy;

through Jesus Christ, our Lord.

C Amen.

Day and night we join to praise Your love and majesty.

You alone are holy, worthy and righteous.

God in three persons, blessed Trinity!

2 Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty!
