Women in Service

Parish Caller Page 2

Women in Service will resume their monthly meetings on Thursday, September 8 at 1 pm in the Conference Room. Kathy Strucely will be the hostess.

Have you ever struggled with what to say to a dear friend or family member who is not a member of a Bible based church? Pastor Yahnke will help us understand what the Jehovah Witness believe and how we can share our faith with Christian love.

“Your word is a lamp for my feet, a light on my path.” (Psalm 119:105) TRUST in the power of GOD’S WORD. As the Lord, through His Word, increases our love for Him and our faith in our Savior, we want to share Christ with others. Over the 13 years THE ROC has been open we have learned how to share the Word of God with the unchurched teens in a way that is real. The Word speaks to every situation in life – dating, a breakup, school, losing or winning a

game, a relationship, reconciliation, a death, an illness, and of course for-giveness and eternal life through Christ, the only Savior. How joyful it is to hear the teens respond with faith and a desire to serve such as helping keep THE ROC clean, community pro-jects like RiverFest Serving, fund rais-ing like the rummage sale and brat frys and much more. May we never lose our confidence in the power of Christ and His Word.

Many hours of hard work were put in by so many at the ROC Rummage Sale which raised $12,153 for THE ROC. Thank you to Trinity/St. Luke’s for the use of their gym and thank you to all the volunteers (some literally gave hundreds of volunteer hours), those who donated items and the shoppers. Thank you so much!

Trinity Teens

The school year has started, again. It's also time for us to start study-ing God's Word and enjoying fellowship again too! Our first teen Bi-ble class will be a special event. On September 11, special presenters will discuss their experiences sharing Christ a Muslim coun-try . We'll meet together with the Adult Bible class for that special presentation.

Our regualr Sunday morning Bible study will begin the following Sun-day, September 18. Bring your school calendars because we'll be planning some fellowship events for the fall at our first meeting as well. I'm looking forward to another year of growing in grace with you.

The Presidential Election is 80 days away, which means our Centennial Celebration is 78 days away. Our commit-tee has worked hard over the past year to build up the anticipation to the celebration of our congregation. The committee has retained Pioneer Caterers to serve for our dinner. Pioneer Caterers also prepares all of the food for Luther Prep. We had a taste test last week and have picked Carved Roast Beef, Apple-Almond Chicken, Pota-toes, Salad and Vegetables. We will also have a children’s meal and special diet menu. You will find in the Parish Caller an invitation to attend. Because this is a catered meal, we will need to have a count of attendees. Please register as soon as you know you are able to attend and indicate if your family would like children’s menu or spe-cial dietary needs. We are looking for members of our congregation to help us with your talents for a little program after the meal. We are looking for people of all ages to help perform in a skit, or sing or play an instrument for the entertainment portion of the day. Please contact Mona Pett or Nancy Zastrow if you would like to participate. If you would like to help us set-up or decorate the gym on Friday, November 4, please contact Laurie Cole, Lyndsay Smulders or Kamilla Thoma. We are also asking families to use their creativity to make a family banner – the only requirement on the banner is to include your last name – and the rest is up to your creativ-ity. You will find several banners in the Fireside Room.

You can pick up a blank banner in the Fireside Room and we would like them back no later than September 30, 2016. Our fund-raising efforts are currently at $3,500.00 – our goal is $4,000.00 – we are almost there. The Christmas ornaments have arrived and are available for $10.00. We ordered 200 ornaments – they will make great Christmas presents! We also have a lot of Stone Creek Coffee avail-able for $15 – there is whole beans and ground coffee in many flavors – please consider purchasing this delicious coffee. We have travel mugs available for $10.00. The cookbooks are at the printers with over 350 recipes! We are waiting for a delivery date. Watch the bulletin and October Parish Caller for delivery date and cost. We want to thank everyone for their support of our com-mittee. As our congregation celebrates 100 years of preaching God’s word, we pray everyone will plan to at-tend the special church service and celebration meal. Please mark your calendar and plan to spend time thank-ing God for the many blessings he has bestowed on our congregation over the past 100 years. Centennial Committee

Page 6 99 Years and Counting `Pastor Timmel served Trinity Lutheran Church under try-ing times in world economy and history. This two-part sec-tion tells of those days in the 1930s and 1940s.

Part I

Marking Time

Pastor Timmel’s Ministry during the Great Depression and WWII

“Marking Time” is a musical expression used with a march-ing band. The director of the band might tell the players to “mark time.” Then the members of the band respond by moving their feet up and down to keep the cadence, but don’t move forward. “Marking Time” aptly describes the situation in which Trinity found itself in the first part of Pastor Timmel’s ministry in Watertown. The congregation and pastor wanted to move forward, but there were sev-eral events of global significance that caused the congre-gation to “stand in place” much longer than they antici-pated.

On October 24, 1929, chaos hit Wall Street in New York City when the stock market crashed. With it the decade of the Roaring Twenties came to an end, and the era of the Great Depression entered not only American society but the entire global economy. The impact was not immedi-ate, but it would be long-lasting. By the early 1930s the effects of the depression were being felt in Watertown. In some regards the Watertown community was spared the severest brunt of the depression because it was primarily an agricultural community. People could plant gardens; the farmers were still producing crops and livestock. Back-yard chicken coops abounded. There was food to eat.

Where the impact was felt was in the job market. People lost their jobs; in some cases without family income and support or an understanding bank they also lost their homes. Pastor Timmel moved to Watertown just at the time the Great Depression was at its most severe. Seven weeks after he was installed in mid-September, 1932, the presidential election was held. The Republican Party under President Herbert Hoover was out, and a Democratic president was elected in the person of Franklin Delano Roosevelt. His campaign song was “Happy Days are Here Again”, and happy days would return to Watertown and the United States, but it would take a second great war to get the economy back in shape.

It was during these trying times that Pastor Timmel shep-herded Trinity congregation in his quiet way. A reading of the church minutes shows pastor, the church officers, and congregational members taking care of the Lord’s busi-ness. Congregational elections were held and offices filled. Members were received by transfer or were transferred to other congregations. Maintenance of the church property was discussed, and repairs made. Bills were presented for payment ($2.00 for 2,000 communion wafers and $0.60 for light bulbs). Committee memberships were filled. Dis-cussion was held on how to integrate the new hymnal adopted by the Synodical Conference entitled “The Lu-theran Hymnal” into the worship life of the congregation. (Trinity’s initial hymnal order was 150 hymnals ordered for members’ personal use and 100 hymnals for the church sanctuary at $0.81 per copy). Pastor Timmel promoted the Synod Debt Retirement Campaign which was to erase the debts resulting from building projects at the Seminary in Thiensville and the college in New Ulm.

Budgets were prepared for adoption and then adopted, although for many years the budgets changed very little from year to year. Pastor Timmel and Miss Sievert contin-ued receiving the same salary for years. Miss Sievert re-marked many years later about her Depression-era salary, “It was a salary, and we were very happy to receive it!” The adopted budget for 1938 was bare bones, but allowed the congregation to meet its mission. The budget would change by very few dollars over the coming years.

Pastor’s Salary $1,800

Teacher’s Salary $ 900

Janitor’s Salary $ 180

Organist for Extra Services $ 100

Fuel, Light, and Telephone $ 125

Repairs and Upkeep $ 300

Printing, Postage, Envelopes $ 150

Music for Choir and Organist $ 25

Insurance $ 25

Asst. Financial Secretary $ 60

Most importantly, the Gospel was preached and shared with the congregation and the Watertown community. Because of their love for the Gospel and its message of sin and grace the congregation and its officers dealt lovingly with delinquent members Several times the minutes of the church council and the congregational meetings re-corded that members were not coming to church because they had no job and couldn’t pay their church dues. The congregation would then act resolving that the dues were waived until such time the individual again had a job.

In the church council meeting of April 3, 1934, discussion centered on celebrating the fifteenth anniversary of the dedication of the Church Home. It was decided that May 6 would be the day of celebration. Prof. E.E. Kowalke, presi-dent of Northwestern College, was invited to be the guest preacher for the morning service while Pastor Timmel would deliver the sermon in the evening service.

It was also decided to institute a building fund beginning with the collection taken at the anniversary celebration. It was also decided that after May 6 the Debt Fund be abol-ished and a building fund be instituted in its place. In addi-tion the funds known as the Catechumen Fund and the Organ Fund were transferred to become a part of the new Building Fund. In the church council meeting of March 30, 1937, the secretary recorded:

Rev. Timmel suggested that the council study the problems of building a church and to take up this matter from time to time at our regular council meetings or special meetings. It was also decided to have members who have knowledge of building to attend these meetings.

Pastor Timmel had an eye to the future. The preaching of the Gospel was bearing fruit at Trinity. The church service was getting crowded, and the time had come to institute two church services on a Sunday morning. In church coun-cil meeting of September 28, 1937,

A motion was made, seconded, and carried to rec-ommend to the congregation to have two services beginning Sunday, October 24, with the following schedule for an indefinite period – Service at 8:15 a.m., Sunday school at 9:30 a.m., and Service at 10:45 a.m. … a motion was made, seconded, and carried to ask the congregation to grant the coun-

cil authority to make arrangements for an Organ-ist for the Extra Service.

An underlying question, though, remained. How to raise the funds for the building of a new church? In 1939 the congregation decided to adopt the Duplex Envelope sys-tem for 1940. The envelopes would have two compart-ments – one for current expenses and the other compart-ment for the Building Fund with a pledge card for both. Later in 1939 discussion continued on increasing the Build-ing Fund. The minutes state that:

A motion was made by Dr. Abelmann and sec-onded by Mr. Kleemann that we accumulate $30,000 in our building fund by January 1st, 1947. This resolution was adopted without a dissenting vote.

As the envelopes were distributed in the early part of De-cember the plan, as outlined by the Financial Secretary was to divide the membership into nine lists with one list for each two members of the committee. As the commit-tee members visited Trinity’s membership they were

to convey to the communicant members that this program of contributing to the building fund is to extended over a period of 8 years, and by means of a small weekly contribution of from 20 to 25 cents would eliminate any possible burden It is also un-derstood that the pledges for current expenses and Missions must not be decreased. Also in view of the fact that we do not have the duplex envelope system for 1939 the plan is to increase the weekly contribution for the remainder of 1939 through weekly contributions.

In October of 1941 the congregation began making plans for the twenty-fifth anniversary of the congregation. The committee in charge of the anniversary decided that a special pastoral letter was to be sent out to the congrega-tion members. Prof. Dudley Rhoda of Northwestern Col-lege would preach in the morning service and Pastor Julius Klingmann of St. Mark’s would preach in the evening ser-vice. By the time of the anniversary celebration the Build-ing Fund had reached $10,448.50. Some of this fund was invested in a savings account, some in the form of a loan to the Bethesda Lutheran Home (at 3% interest), and the rest in government bonds.

The minutes of the congregation do not record the events of December 7, 1941, the day that President Franklin De-lano Roosevelt stated “would live in infamy.” Within hours the United States was at war with both the Empire of Ja-pan and the German Third Reich. However, the minutes record actions taken by the congregation to remember their fighting men. In January, 1942,

Mr. Wm. Schumann inquired regarding the num-ber of men Trinity has in army service and what was being done for them by our congregation – there are now ten in service. Gifts were sent them at Christmas time and each is to receive a copy of our annual report…Pastor Timmel will announce that the church will receive gifts for our men, the thought being that we try to send each something worthwhile about every 3 months…The matter of placing a flag in our church was now discussed at some length. Prof. Fleischer was asked to tell what had been done at other times and he gave us an account of past experiences. Mr. Max Conrad spoke on the proper way to display a flag. Motion was made, seconded, and carried that the matter be delegated to the pastor and church council.

The minutes report that the newly purchased U.S. flag was dedicated on Sunday, April 12, 1942. Later in the year the congregation adopted Pastor Timmel’s recommendation

that The Northwestern Lutheran be sent to all those in the military services at congregational cost. By October of 1942 Pastor Timmel reported that two men had com-pleted their training in the United States and were sent overseas. His annual report for 1942 distributed in January of 1943 records:

More and more the absence of young faces is noted among us. Already 32 of our men are gone to join the colors and yet more are waiting to heed the call. Four of these men are overseas, but we have as yet not heard that any has seen action. We carry these men in our prayers and in our min-istry, they are being taken care of in the best man-ner that distance and circumstances will permit. From time to time families have moved to other cities to take jobs in the defense industry. Thus far such families have arranged for connection with sister-congregations and need not suffer on that score because of their change of residence.

By November of 1943 Pastor Timmel reported to the con-gregation that the congregation had forty-nine men in the armed forces with twelve of them overseas.

A Lasting Legacy

As we approach the 2016-2017 school year we need to step back and look at the blessings bestowed on our congrega-tions through full-time Christ-centered education. The cornerstone of the Western Avenue campus building was laid on June 2, 1974. This year is the forty-second year of the building that several thousand children have attended over the past years. It was a challenging but wise project for Trinity Lutheran Church to undertake.

Almost from the beginning St. Luke’s Lutheran Church began sending students to Trinity Lutheran School. Over time St. Luke’s began providing teachers as their student number increased. Then St. Luke’s congregation joined into a joint agreement. It was seventeen years ago in 1999 that St. Luke’s dedicated to God’s glory the addition to their church structure we know as the Clark Street campus for grades 5-8. It likewise was a challenging but wise project for St. Luke’s Lutheran Church to undertake.

Over the years congregational members and people within and from outside of the community have remarked about the passion our congregations had for full-time Christian education. Those passions led to Trinity-St. Luke’s Lutheran School. The passion was there as the congregations committed themselves to a joint school with the accompanying building projects. Is the passion still there? What is the level of interest and support today in 2016 for your school? Is it worth it?

Maybe our question should be this: What is it worth to train our children to know their Savior Jesus and to live their lives in service to Him? Obviously there is nothing more valuable to a Christian parent than that their child also know Jesus. It is so important that all of our teachers have been trained to share the Word of God with children and have dedicated their lives to serve the Lord in this ministry. It is so important that Trinity and St. Luke’s congregations pro-vide our families with these trained teachers, with wonderful facilities, and with monetary gifts brought out of love for Jesus to financially maintain the school. It is impossible to put a price tag on bringing children to Jesus.

God be praised for the blessings He has shown to us through TSL!

As we pray the Lord’s blessings on another school year, some dates to consider are in order:

Sunday, August 21, Mrs. Morgan Beyer will be installed as one of our seventh and eighth garden teachers in the 9:30 a.m. service at St. Luke’s. A reception and gift card shower will be held after the service as we welcome Mrs. Beyer and her husband, Andrew.

Tuesday, August 23, the annual Fifth Grade Orientation will be held at the Clark Street campus at 7:00 p.m. This is an opportunity for fifth grade students and their parents to learn what life is like in fifth grade at a new campus.

Wednesday, August 24, 3K orientation will be held at the Western Avenue campus at 6 p.m. 4K orientation will be held Thursday evening, August 25, also at 6:00 p.m. Preschool parents and their students are encouraged to come and learn about preschool life with Mrs. Hayes and Mrs. Mensching.

Sunday, August 28, Mr. Jared Matthies will be installed as our seventh and eighth grade teacher at the 9:30 a.m. service at Trinity. A reception will be held after to welcome Mr. Matthies and his wife, Dani.

Tuesday, August 30, is the first day of school. Opening day chapel will be held at the Clark Street campus at 8:00 a.m. in St. Luke’s Church and at 9:00 a.m. at the Western Avenue campus in the gymnasium.

Friday, September 2, and Monday, September 5, are days of no school due to the Labor Day weekend.

We thank the Lord that He has granted us a complete faculty for the 2016-2017 school year that was already in place by mid-May (that hasn’t happened the last few years.) We welcome Mrs. Beyer and Mr. Matthies as our new seventh and eighth grade teachers. May the Lord bless their service among us!

And may the Lord bless our school year!
