PASTOR HOLTE’S MAY UPDATE

Dear Trinity Members and Friends,

Even though it looks and feels like the dead of winter as I write these words, it is time to focus our thoughts on the month of May! Here are some highlights:

1. Northeastern Minnesota Synod Assembly will be held at Cragun’s Resort May 4th – 6th. The pastors, intern, and our 3 delegates will be in attendance. Our delegates this year are Loren Meinke, Linda Meinke, and Sandee Haugene. Keep our group and the entire assembly in your prayers as we do the important work of the greater church, the synod and the ELCA of which we are a part of.

2. On Sunday, May 27th, we will resume our Summer worship schedule with one service on Sundays at 9:00 a.m. Of course the Wednesday worship will continue each week at 6:00 p.m. Our normal course of traditional and Awe services will be included and special music has been arranged for every Sunday. Please join us every Sunday this summer!

3. New Members were received on Sunday, April 29th. Lee & Trudy Austin, Jay & Callie Bautch and their children – Anika & Alex, Keith & Kristin Binsfeld and their children Wyatt & Tucker, Marci Knotz & Jim Rorvig and their daughter Danni, Mike Lease, Corey & Katie Pudas and their child Gemma, and Dale & Linda Richau. We welcome these enthusiastic new members into the Trinity family.

I wish a Happy May to you as you anticipate summer, relaxing, and a

renewal of your body, mind, and spirits.

See you in Church!

Your pastor and friend,

David P. Holte

PASTOR ANDERSON’S MAY UPDATE Holy, Holy, Holy, Lord God Almighty! Early in the morning our song shall rise to Thee. Holy, Holy, Holy, Merciful and Mighty! God in three persons, Blessed Trinity! Verse 1 from “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty” ELW #413

I love the month of May! For such a small word… it packs quite a punch. In some parts of speech, “may” ponders potential. In others, “may” calls upon a lady or hearkens this great month!

May welcomes in the splendid trifecta of the Walleye Opener, Celebrating our Mother’s, and our Northeast Minnesota Synod Assembly… in no particular order of favoritism. Yes, this month of May brings about multitudes of greenery, flowers, and the rumbling blessings of May showers. May brings about 3-fold endings as well… the end of school, the end of Sunday school, and at the end of the month- at time to remember and give thanks for those who served and died for our freedoms in the U.S military.

May brings about transitons with ministries at church with Splash, our worship schedule-9:00 a.m beginning Memorial Day Weekend, and Wednesday night meals come to a close. On the liturgical calendar we transition from the season of Easter, to the day of Pentecost and then to Holy Trinity Sunday!

As members of Trinity Lutheran Church it is one of our traditions to sing “Holy, Holy, Holy Lord God Almighty” on Holy Trinity Sunday. I am reminded of this song this time of year, as not only creation sings Gods praise…but we do as well. I love the verse… “Early in the morning, our song shall rise to Thee!” Echoing the robins, bluebirds, and rose-breasted grosebeaks… we sing with gusto, beauty, and vibrating variations as well! This is our story here at Trinity, a story so vibrant and green, we can’t help but sing!

INTERN MATT MAY UPDATE With the Easter morning sun shining bright onto us I am reminded of the

great joy that we have. Yes, the world is full of brokenness, but our faith in

Christ means death is no longer final. We have been

blessed with so much, and even though things are not

perfect we have a lot to be thankful for. May you find

energy this Spring that God will light a fire in your heart

to share Easter joy with everyone you encounter!

Brewing Theology continues to do well! Our latest

conversation about forgiveness brought forward a

multitude of challenges to wrestle through about how God forgives and how we

forgive. We’ve had very rich conversations. I had the opportunity to lead the

confirmation students in a fun and fellowship event, but I added in a twist.

Parents came with their kids and together teamed up to complete a variety of

faith activities and active challenges. Alicia was generous enough to invite me to

the Seder meal during Holy Week, and it was incredible. A special thanks to

Alicia and the volunteers who helped put together an awesome meal! I even

tried lamb for the first time.

On Sunday, May 6th during the Education hour at 9:30 a.m., I will be leading an adult education hour titled, “Video Games: The Good, The Bad, and The Church.” Topics in the presentation will include video games and violence, video game demographics, video games and the brain, the business of gaming, the rise of professional gaming, the draw of video game culture, and why the church should care. If you are unfamiliar with video game culture and want to learn more this presentation is for you.

On April 27th there was a game night at Trinity! There were board games, card games, and field games (weather permitting). Folks brought their own games to share as we enjoyed each other’s company and spend time in

fellowship. We ate pizza together and had some very good quality fellowship time.

I will be attending my first synod assembly this May. I’m looking forward to making connections with other pastors and seeing what is happening in the synod. I’m not familiar with how these meetings work, but as I am continuing in my learning this will be a good thing for me to be a part of.

May you all feel warm blessings from God, who is always at work in our

lives and around the world! -Intern Matt

with us today: the small catechism, which includes the memory work learned by all Sunday

School children and the many hymns he wrote including “A Mighty Fortress is Our God”.

seniors with a brunch at 9:30 and they will be recognized during the 10:30 worship service.

AED TRAINING

Did you know that Trinity has 2-AED’s (Automated External Defibrillator) if we ever have the need to use them for a person who has gone into cardiac arrest? We need

trained Trinity members to use the AED’s and we will have a new training session on Sunday, May 13th at 9:30 a.m. (during our Education Hour) led by Colette Larson from the Essentia Take Heart Program. Sudden cardiac arrest is one of the leading causes of death in the U.S. Over

350,000 people will suffer from sudden cardiac arrest this year. It can happen to anyone, anytime, anywhere and at any age. An AED is the only effective treatment for restoring a regular heart rhythm during sudden cardiac arrest and is an easy to operate tool for someone with no medical background. Please consider attending and learning to use this life-saving tool! Questions?? See Joe in the church office.

SUNDAY MORNING VOLUNTEERS NEEDED AS GREETERS, USHERS, READERS & COMMUNION SERVERS

Would you like to get involved in church but don’t quite know what you can do? Why don’t you consider being a Sunday Morning Volunteer? Can you commit to helping just once every 4-6 weeks? The sign-up charts are posted outside of the Main Office doors on the bulletin board. The goal is have our Trinity members sign-up only once a month to help with these important duties. Thank You!! Greeters - Greeters are the first people to welcome a new person or family. Their primary task of a Greeter is to create an initial atmosphere of love, unity and enthusiasm for our Sunday morning worshipers, especially our visitors.

Ushers - Ushering is an opportunity to serve God by serving His people and is a marvelous way to actively and faithfully participate in the function of our church. Ushering provides a wonderful way to begin to grow and to continue to serve in a very important role for the church. If you sign up, the goal is that you would usher once a month.

Lesson Readers - Each Sunday there is a lesson to be read either from the Old or New Testament. If you are not sure how to pronounce a certain word, either ask a pastor ahead of time, or just say your best guess with confidence!

Communion Servers - Communion is served every Sunday of the month at both of our Worship Services. 5-6 servers are needed at each service. Communion servers assist the pastors in offering the communion elements, a symbol of God's love and grace, to worship service participants.

THANK YOU’S Thank you for your recent gift of seven bags of quilts and the baby caps. Your gifts make a profound difference in helping the hands of partners in over a dozen countries. Thank you for your generosity and partnership. Together in Christ, Pastor Doug Cox, Global Health Ministries

Thank you so much for the generosity shown by your groups. Your cash donation plus the cleaning supplies and the tie blankets and so much more; mean a lot. Our residents appreciate them so much when moving to their new homes. We appreciate you all! Your support keeps us “doing what we do”… Thanks so much for all you do! With warm regards. The Staff and Board/Mid-Minnesota Women’s Shelter

Dear Pastor Dave, Pastor Hans, Doug Johnson and the Trinity Family – It is truly a blessing to be a member of the Trinity congregation! Thank you so much for the kind words of encouragement, prayers, pastoral visits and help you have graciously given to us since Del’s surgery on January 16th. We do believe he will be returning to work soon! Many thanks! Jodie & Del Dahl and family

LUTHER CREST NEWS Greetings from Luther Crest to everyone who has been a part of Luther Crest's quilt events and fundraisers over the years! You have helped raise over $300.000 for camper scholarships. We would like to take a moment to thank you for your hard work and generosity and to update you regarding our Annual Marketplace and inform you of a few changes that we will be making for 2018 and 2019.

The past few years, we have noticed significant changes in the demand and the number of buyers wanting to purchase a quilt each year. This trend is being seen not only at Luther Crest, but at other churches and camps in Minnesota as well. After careful consideration and evaluation of the average price per quilt and the number of quilts that did not sell in 2017, the Quilt Committee has decided that we will try something-new for 2018. We have enough quilts and crafts to sell at the Fall Marketplace AND we will not need any quilt or craft donations for 2018.

Please know this was not an easy decision. WE STILL NEED YOUR HELP! We have a few ideas about how you can still participate in helping raise money for campers. 1. As many churches began doing a few years ago, we welcome monetary donations for Luther Crest camper scholarships in lieu of a quilt or craft donation. 2. Several churches have had great success in creating a quilt, displaying the quilt at their home church, having a silent auction or event and donating the proceeds to Luther Crest This is another great way to make a quilt each year and help Luther Crest raise money so that more campers can attend summer camp each year. Mark your calendars for following events for 2018 and 2019!! 1. LUTHER CREST FAMOUS COOKIES will be for sale at the Carlos Creek Grape Stomp, September 14th -16th. We could use volunteers to help us raise rnoney for camper scholarships at this 3-day event.

2. THE 2018 MARKETPLACE at The Apple Fest -OCTOBER 20. Luther Crest will still be at the Carlos Creek Winery with an expanded Apple Bakery, the Cookie Tent and a few Quilt and Craft Items. We do not need any quilt or craft donations but would love to have volunteers come out to help with this event.

3. NEW EVENT FOR QUILTERS AND CRAFTERS FOR 2019!!! Please join us April 26th – 27th, 2019 for the 1st Annual "Spring Thing" Artisan Weekend. We want to continue offering opportunities for quilters & crafters to support the ministry of Luther Crest. This NEW weekend retreat will have vendors, educational classes, time and space for quilters and crafters to work on projects. This event also includes an elegant, gourmet dinner with music on Friday.

~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~ Mom and Dad were married 64 years. And if you wondered what their secret was, you could have asked the local florist - because every day Dad gave Mom a rose, which he put on her bedside table. That's how she found out what happened on the day my father died - she went looking for him because that morning, there was no rose.
