WELCOME… We pray this worship time is enriching for your spiritual life.

Day of Pentecost: Today’s festival derives its name from the Jewish festival of Pentecost, observed fifty days after Passover. On the fiftieth day of Easter we celebrate the Holy Spirit as the power of God among us that heals, forgives, inspires, and unites. In the reading from Acts, images of wind and fire describe the Spirit poured out on disciples of all nations. In John’s gospel the risen Christ breathes the Spirit on his followers on Easter evening. In the one Spirit we are baptized into one body, and at the Lord’s table the Spirit unites us for witness in the world.

PRELUDE

WELCOME

CONFESSION AND FORGIVENESS All may make the sign of the cross, the sign marked at baptism, as the minister begins. In the name of the Father,

and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen. God of all mercy and consolation, come to the help of your people, turning us from our sin to live for you alone. Give us the power of your Holy Spirit that we may confess our sin, receive your forgiveness, and grow into the fullness of Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

Page 3: TRINITY EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH - … have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ... the love of God, ... Pastor Don Holmstrom, ...

Let us confess our sin in the presence of God and of one another. Most merciful God, we confess that we are captive to sin and cannot free ourselves. We have sinned against you in thought, word, and deed, by what we have done and by what we have left undone. We have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ourselves. For the sake of your Son, Jesus Christ, have mercy on us. Forgive us, renew us, and lead us, so that we may delight in your will and walk in your ways, to the glory of your holy name. Amen. In the mercy of almighty God, Jesus Christ was given to die for us, and for his sake God forgives us all our sins. As a called and ordained minister of the church of Christ, and by his authority, I therefore declare to you the entire forgiveness of all your sins, in the name of the

Father, and of the ☩ Son, and of the Holy Spirit. Amen.

GATHERING HYMN: “Spirit of Gentleness” (ELW 396)

GREETING The grace of our Lord Jesus Christ, the love of God, and the communion of the Holy Spirit be with you all. And also with you.

PRAYER OF THE DAY Let us pray.

O God, on this day you open the hearts of your faithful people by sending into us your Holy Spirit. Direct us by the light of that Spirit, that we may have a right judgment in all things and rejoice at all times in your peace, through Jesus Christ, your Son and our Lord, who lives and reigns with you and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever. Amen.

The assembly is seated.

READING: 1 Corinthians 12:3b-13

Paul is helping the Corinthians understand the relationship between our God-given unity and Spirit-created diversity. The Spirit creates the unity of faith and gives all Christians diverse gifts for the common benefit of all. We need one another’s diverse spiritual gifts, because the same Spirit has given

them to each person for the common good.

A reading from 1 Corinthians.

3bNo one can say “Jesus is Lord” except by the Holy Spirit. 4Now there are varieties of gifts, but the same Spirit; 5and there are varieties of services, but the same Lord; 6and there are varieties of activities, but it is the same God who activates all of them in everyone. 7To each is given the manifestation of the Spirit for the common good. 8To one is given through the Spirit the utterance of wisdom, and to another the utterance of knowledge according to the same Spirit, 9to another faith by the same Spirit, to another gifts of healing by the one Spirit, 10to another the working of miracles, to another prophecy, to another the discernment of spirits, to another various kinds of tongues, to another the interpretation of tongues. 11All these are activated by one and the same Spirit, who allots to each one individually just as the Spirit chooses.12For just as the body is one and has many members, and all the members of the body, though many, are one body, so it is with Christ. 13For in the one Spirit we were all baptized into one body—Jews or Greeks, slaves or free—and we were all made to drink of one Spirit.

Word of God, word of life. Thanks be to God.

GOSPEL ACCLAMATION The assembly stands to welcome the gospel.

Page 6: TRINITY EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH - … have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ... the love of God, ... Pastor Don Holmstrom, ...

GOSPEL: John 20:19-23 The risen Jesus appears to his disciples, offering them a benediction, a commission, and the gift of the

Holy Spirit.

The holy gospel according to John. Glory to you, O Lord. 19When it was evening on that day, the first day of the week, and the doors of the house where the disciples had met were locked for fear of the Jews, Jesus came and stood among them and said, “Peace be with you.” 20After he said this, he showed them his hands and his side. Then the disciples rejoiced when they saw the Lord. 21Jesus said to them again, “Peace be with you. As the Father has sent me, so I send you.” 22When he had said this, he breathed on them and said to them, “Receive the Holy Spirit. 23If you forgive the sins of any, they are forgiven them; if you retain the sins of any, they are retained.”

The gospel of the Lord. Praise to you, O Christ.

SERMON The assembly is seated.

HYMN OF THE DAY: “God of Tempest, God of Whirlwind” (ELW 400)

RECEIVING OF NEW MEMBERS The minister invites the new members to profess their faith.

Then, the assembly answers the following questions with the new members. P Do you believe in God the Father? C I believe in God, the Father almighty,

creator of heaven and earth.

P Do you believe in Jesus Christ, the Son of God? C I believe in Jesus Christ, God’s only Son, our Lord,

who was conceived by the Holy Spirit, born of the virgin Mary, suffered under Pontius Pilate, was crucified, died, and was buried;

Page 7: TRINITY EVANGELICAL LUTHERAN CHURCH - … have not loved you with our whole heart; we have not loved our neighbors as ... the love of God, ... Pastor Don Holmstrom, ...

he descended to the dead. On the third day he rose again; he ascended into heaven, he is seated at the right hand of the Father, and he will come to judge the living and the dead.

P Do you believe in God the Holy Spirit? C I believe in the Holy Spirit,

the holy catholic church, the communion of saints, the forgiveness of sins, the resurrection of the body, and the life everlasting. Amen.

The assembly welcomes the newest members into the family of faith.

PEACE The presiding minister and the assembly greet each other in the peace of the risen Christ. The peace of Christ be with you always. And also with you.

The assembly is seated.

PARISH ANNOUNCEMENTS Brief announcements will be made by the Pastor and thanks given for what our offerings provide towards the church’s mission.

OFFERING: “Come to the Table” (ELW 481)

OFFERING PRAYER After the table is set, the assisting minister leads the prayer.

Let us pray.

Blessed are you, O God, maker of all things. Through your goodness you have blessed us with these gifts: our selves, our time, and our possessions. Use us, and what we have gathered, in feeding the world with your love, through the one who gave himself for us, Jesus Christ, our Savior and Lord. Amen.

THE GREAT THANKSGIVING

The Lord be with you. And also with you.

Lift up your hearts. We lift them to the Lord.

Let us give thanks to the Lord our God. It is right to give our thanks and praise.
