INTRODUCTION

Having been at Trinity for your high school education, you will be aware of the school’s strengths: the quality of teaching and learning, our partnership with parents and our determination to ensure that every student succeeds.

It is now time to plan the next two years of y our education and training and to consider what the Trinity Sixth Form has to offer. It is no coincidence that the government has given us £3million capital funding to build and open a Sixth Form for 300 students, a nd that the Office for Sta ndards in Education (OFSTED) has judged Trinity to be an Outstanding school.

Many of the photographs in this Pr ospectus were taken during our Open Evening for Students a nd parents, the Sixth Form ‘taster’ lessons and various presentations given to our Year 11s in 2015-16.

Our expectation is tha t every student at Trinity will see the benefit of stopping on into the Sixth Form and decide that Trinity CE High School Sixth Form is the place to be. Please read on to see how we can meet your needs.

ALL ROADS LEAD TO TRINITY Situated close to Oxford Road and the

city centre, Trinity is easily accessible from all d irections.

Trinity is also a n integral part of the ‘Oxford Road Corridor’ and the wider educational

campus w hich includes the University of Manchester, Ma nchester Metropolitan University, the Royal Northern College of

Music, the Science Park and Manchester Business School — all of w hich are our immediate neighbours.

This makes Trinity a major part of a n

outstanding educational pr ovision at the heart of Ma nchester .

8.30am-9.00am Registration with Sixth Form Tutor in a

sm all group of 15 students. Tutor ial tim e will include academ ic support,

debate on topical issues, university and em ploym ent linked activities. One day

a week, from 8.30am-9.00am , there will be a Sixth Form act of worship. Sixth Form ers m ay also attend the

m onthly Eucharist services if they wish.

9.00am Sixth Form lessons begin, each of

which will last one hour. Tim etabled

private study tim e will be a chance for students to use the Sixth Form study facilities, pursue background reading

and com plete subject assignm ents.

11.00am-11.15am Morning break.

11.20am Sixth Form lessons continue.

12.20pm-1.00pm

Year 12 lunchtim e.

1.20pm-2.00pm Year 13 lunchtim e.

Lessons continue after lunch. Throughout the day, the Sixth Form canteen will be open to serve drink s and snacks, and m eals at lunchtim e.

Students m ay be off-site dur ing their lunchtim e but will return after lunch

for the resum ption of the working day.

3.05pm Final Sixth Form lesson ends. Students

‘de-register’ them selves electronically.

3.05pm-4.30pm All Sixth Form study facilities will be

available to students.

A DAY AT TRINITY’S SIXTH FORM CENTRE The typical day is from 8.30am-3.05pm; study facilities are available before and after these times.

LOOKING THE PART We regard our Sixth Formers as responsible young adults w ho will be looked up to and respected by younger students in the school . For this reason, our standards and expectations will be high.

Regarding appearance, there is no specific Sixth Form uniform, although everyone should adhere to a smart, professional dress code. Our Sixth Formers are, of course, role models for the rest of the school.

IS TRINITY FOR YOU? There are many reasons w hy you may wish to j oin Trinity and you are the best j udge of what will work for you. Nevertheless, you are str ongly urged to discuss your options with parents, elder brothers and sisters who have progressed thr ough Sixth Forms and, of course, the Trinity staff w ho know you so well.

One powerful aspect of life in the Sixth Form at Trinity will be the continuation of very good relationships between students and staff a nd the support a nd understanding that makes this possible.

MONITORING STUDENTS’ PROGRESS Students will be set challenging yet realistic targets at the start of

each course, monitored by means of regular assessments in all

subjects a nd progress reported to parents a nd students every term.

Examinations at the end of Year 12 will also help to gauge progress.

Personalised support a nd intervention will ensure that all students

make the required progress and be able to secure the grades that are

necessary for progression — whether this be to university,

employment or further training.

FACILITIES, SUPPORT AND GUIDANCE The Sixth Form Centre is built to house 300 students. At a cost of

£3million, it pr ovides:

Specialist provision a nd purpose-b uilt classr ooms

A study centre and resource base

IT facilities for everyone

Catering and leisure fa cilities.

Each student will be in a small tutorial group of 15 and the support

provided by the Sixth Form Tutor will be personalised according to

individual needs. The Head of Sixth Form will coordinate the a cademic

and pastoral support needed.

REQUIREMENTS FOR ENTRY TO TRINITY’S SIXTH FORM We want all our students to aim high and it is important for students to have a realistic understanding of their potential and to embark on courses in which they have a good chance of success.

For these reasons, and to have a Sixth Form place guaranteed, students must have a chieved the following:

Five GCSE passes at grade ‘C’ or above, including English and mathematics

Grade ‘B’ or above in the subjects chosen for Sixth Form study

A good record of attendance, punctuality and behaviour w hilst at Trinity and a positive recommendation from the Year 11 Senior Tutor or Assista nt Head

Before Sixth Form studies begin, to have signed the ‘Sixth Form Study Agreement’ which clarifies expecta tions and ensures our continued belief in partnership work.

MAKING YOUR APPLICATION

Complete the Sixth Form Application found at the back of the Prospectus and ha nd it in any time from the start of September to the end of January of Year 11.

Your applica tion will be acknowledged and you will later be invited to attend a meeting with the Head of Sixth Form.

If Trinity is the right Sixth Form for you, the offer of a place will be made to y ou in writing.

You then confirm that you accept the offer.

WHAT YOU CAN STUDY

ART AND DESIGN ADVANCED LEVEL Art and Design is a rewarding route to developing your ability to design and create innovative work in a variety of m edia including Fine Art, Printm aking, Photography, Graphic Design, Textiles, I llustration, Film & Video and 3D Design/Ceram ics. There is flexibility within the course to allow students to focus on their own interests and com bine comm on them es, for exam ple m ixing ceram ics, photography and textiles in one project. The outcom e of the course will be the developm ent of super b design-and-m ake skills com bined with outstanding project m anagem ent ability. Both are valuable attributes that are highly sought after by em ployers and universities.

BIOLOGY ADVANCED LEVEL Biology is a wide ra nging subject that will appea l if y ou are interested in how liv ing organism s work and behave. You will study the structure of plants and anim als as entire organism s, as well a s the m icroscopic structures within them , and the processes which are going on inside. You will gain a deeper insight into the way in which new developm ents can take place within the scientific comm unity, particularly in fields such as genetics. Biologists are logical problem -solvers and excellent comm unicators and you will experience a wide range of theoretical, practical and num erical work wher e these areas can be developed; skills that are essential for either study at university or the wor ld of work.

CHEMISTRY ADVANCED LEVEL Chem istry is an exciting and constantly changing subject involved in everything around us, from the m aking of new m aterials such as graphene, to understanding biological system s. If you are curious as to why elem ents and com pounds behave in certain ways and have a keen interest in finding out m ore about the m aterial world around you, then C hem istry is a good subject choice for you. In the course, there will be a large am ount of practical based learning as well as num erical analysis. In choosing Chem istry, you will develop valuable practical and problem -solving skills which can be applied to any further education r oute or em ploym ent opportunity.

BUSINESS LEVEL 3 VOCATIONAL Business is a n excellent ba sis for students to develop their under standing of the world of work. Practically all future vocations will require an a bility to analyse the business world in which they exist. Students will study the form ation of a business, what drives success or failure and how businesses get there. Analytical skills and the ability to pr edict outcom es from situations that develop in the econom y will be explored and shar pened. This knowledge is an extrem ely useful tool in num erous fields of further study or em ploym ent.

WHAT YOU CAN STUDY

ECONOMICS ADVANCED LEVEL Econom ics is a social science concerned with incom e, wealth and well-being and the factors that influence how people, fam ilies, firm s and governm ents m ake decisions. You will be introduced to the basic econom ic problem of scarcity and unlim ited wants and how the m arket allocates scarce resources. You will consider the governm ent’s role in managing the econom y and how it achieves the m acroeconom ic objectives of econom ic growth, reducing unem ploym ent and equality in the distribution of incom e. In studying Econom ics you will learn about the econom ics of business behav iour. You will study globa l econom ics and consider issues such as trade, g lobalisation and developm ent and the role of banks a nd financial m arkets in the global econom y.

COMPUTING ADVANCED LEVEL Com puting is about developing com putational think ing skills that can be applied in a range of contexts. Students will develop skills in pr oblem -solving, abstract thinking, and a lgorithm ic and m athematical reasoning. Students will a lso develop creative skills so that they can perceive the usefulness of new technologies. These skills will prepare students for careers or further study in a wide range of disciplines, such as com puting, science and engineering. Com puting is an ever-evolving discipline, and the content of the course will prepare students with the foundations of Com puter Science thinking so that they will be able to engage with new technologies as they are developed.

WHAT YOU CAN STUDY

ENGLISH LANGUAGE ADVANCED LEVEL Did you enjoy GCSE E nglish? Do y ou like wr iting creatively and studying a wide range of texts and discourses? If so, this could be the course for you! English Language involves the study of the practice of wr iting for different pur poses and audiences. You will have the opportunity to work with professional writers and visit m useum s, theatres and other places of interest to stim ulate writing. This qua lification would be idea l if you are looking for a career in any of the following areas: Journalism , Teaching, Law, Politics, Social Work, Advertising, Marketing and other form s of m edia.

ENGINEERING LEVEL 3 VOCATIONAL Engineering is the practical application of m athem atics and science to solve problem s. If you have so far enjoyed these subjects, and Design Technology, this could be the course for you. The discipline of engineering covers a range of m ore specialised fields including electronic, m echanical and structural engineering. Students will study m aterials, m echanical system s, engineering design and ‘m echatronics’, the exciting interface between m echanical and electronic system s. The course is designed to ensure students are suitably qualified across a range of engineering fields in order to pr ogress on to university, an apprenticeship, em ploym ent or further training in local industry.

FRENCH ADVANCED LEVEL Being able to speak a foreign language is an im portant life skill as this will open doors to further study in this country or abroa d. French is highly valued in the world of business and the global com m unity. Learning a language will offer a range of cultural experiences and the opportunity to travel. You will be learning about m edia, popular cultur e, healthy lifestyles, per sona l relationships, the wor ld around you, education a nd em ploym ent. Those who study languages are confident and independent learners, at ease in social situations, a nd have excellent com m unication skills. Languages are confirm ation of your academ ic ability and are welcom ed by univer sities and em ployers.

ENGLISH LITERATURE ADVANCED LEVEL Are you som eone who enjoys reading? Would you like to continue to develop your interest in and enjoym ent of literature? On this course y ou will undertake independent studies to deepen your a ppreciation and understanding of literature, including its changing traditions. Y ou will read a wide body of texts, both old and new, in order to develop and apply your literary analysis a nd evaluation sk ills. English Literature is highly valued by universities and the skills that you will develop, including debating and writing concisely, are essential for m any university courses and occupations.

WHAT YOU CAN STUDY

GEOGRAPHY ADVANCED LEVEL The world we live in is changing m ore than ever before and there has never been a m ore im portant tim e to study Geography. With issues such as poverty, clim ate change and im m igration of such im portance, Geography can equip you with the sk ills and knowledge needed to under stand them . The skills gained by studying Geography are som e of the m ost transferable between careers a nd into university. These include team work, presentation skills, data handling and independent research. As a result, Geography is listed by the Russell Group as one of the seven facilitating subjects m ost valued by top universities.

FU RTHER MATHEM ATICS ADVANCED LEVEL Having gained a grade ‘A’ in GCSE Mathem atics, Further Mathem atics will broaden and deepen your m athematical skills. The course is a com bination of Further Core Mathem atics and Applied Mathem atics. There are additional Further Statistics and Mechanics elem ents available. F urther Core builds upon techniques in a lgebra, geom etry, trigonom etry and calculus developed in A-level Mathem atics. In addition to this, topics such as com plex num bers, m atrices, proofs, hy perbolic functions a nd differential equations are introduced. For anyone wishing to study Mathem atics beyond A-level, Further Mathem atics will g ive an excellent grounding in som e of the topics studied at university.

HISTORY ADVANCED LEVEL History isn’t a subject that’s stuck in the past; far from it! Historical events are what have shaped society worldwide and Britain into what it is today. The study of History will help you understand the value and significance of these events including the rise of the USA to superpower status and the m aking of m odern Britain. In the process, you’ll gain a deeper understanding of the social, cultural, relig ious a nd ethnic diversity of this country and bey ond. Knowing how people lived and acted in the past helps to understand why people, and indeed countries, act as they do today.

HEALTH & SOCIAL CARE LEVEL 3 VOCATIONAL Health and Social Care will equip you with the range of skills and knowledge needed to pursue a career in Nursing, Midwifery or Social Work. Y ou will gain knowledge of hum an growth and developm ent through the life stages and will see this thr ough your work experience placem ents. Other areas to be studied include the anatom y and physiology of hum an body system s, understanding the different sociological and psychological approaches that can be used when work ing in a health and social care setting and the essentials of UK care provision. Team working skills will be developed by taking part in whole class and sm all group discussions and presentations.

WHAT YOU CAN STUDY

LAW ADVANCED LEVEL Have you ever wanted to learn about real life legal cases? Have you ever wondered how crim inals are sentenced or what the legal difference is between m urder and m anslaughter? If so, then you will enjoy the study of Law as you delve into the basis of society and the origin of legal principles. The cour se explores Law Making, the Legal System and the concept of Liability and Crim inal La w. As part of this you will have the opportunity to take part in a ‘m oot’ ( a m ock legal role play). If you have an enquiring m ind, a thirst for k nowledge and would like an A-level that is desirable and recognisable by universities and em ployer s, then consider Law as a subject.

ICT ADVANCED LEVEL ICT prepares students to engage with technology in a productive m anner. Students will m ake use of a range of software applications such as word processing, desktop publishing, presentation software, web developm ent software, sound and v ideo editing software. The theoretical aspect of the course looks at the challenges facing businesses when m aking use of ICT by looking at issues such as security, safety, legal concerns and the envir onm ent. This qualification prepares students to becom e inform ed user s of application software and will ena ble them to apply their learning to a wide range of careers or further study.

MUSIC ADVANCED LEVEL Music offers students the opportunity to develop their talents in perform ance and com posing. We have a pa ssion for m usic of all genres and we encourage students to broaden and appreciate a variety of styles of m usic. We aim to provide the basis of a life-long love for m usic through a course which is diverse, challenging and enjoyable. You should alrea dy have studied m usic and we expect comm itm ent and enthusiasm to be Grade 5 practical or above and be work ing on Grade 5 theory. Music is an excellent way to m aintain y our current involvem ent in m usic and an opportunity to work with our choirs, ensem bles, concert programm e, school productions and tours.

MATHEMATICS ADVANCED LEVEL By studying Mathem atics you will have the opportunity to develop your understanding of a wide range of m athem atical concepts. These include trigonom etry, calculus and advanced algebra techniques. Statistics enables you to study probability theory and how to apply this to rea l-world situations. Mechanics facilitates the study of m ovem ent through topics such as kinem atics, vectors and dynam ics. Decision Mathem atics provides the opportunity to study concepts used extensively in the business world such as algorithm s, linear pr ogramm ing and critical path analysis. Studying Mathematics will enhance your understanding of m any other subjects and provide you with a valuable and m uch sought after qualification.

WHAT YOU CAN STUDY

PHYSICS ADVANCED LEVEL Physics is the study of processes on a vast scale, from the entire universe to the nucleus of an atom and beyond. If you are intellectually curious and enjoy Mathem atics, problem solving and puzzles, then Physics is a subject which will suit you well. P hysics helps m ake m ore sense of the world and develop a wide range of skills which em ployers recognise can be applied in a wide range of contexts. In addition to lear ning new theor ies, we will m ake sure that you are a ble to carry out plenty of practical experim ental work which, in tur n, will com plem ent and extend your understanding of the key concepts you are studying.

PERFORMING ARTS (ACTING) LEVEL 3 VOCATIONAL This cour se is aim ed at preparing you for the world of acting. All aspects of actor training will be covered including techniques from Stanislavski and Brecht, im provisation and physical theatre as well as classical and contem porary theatre practices. We will aim to prepare you for film and television as well as live theatre. You will have the opportunity to work at the highest possible standard, creating perform ance work which aim s for inspirational quality. This is a practical course that is underpinned with theory and business skills.

RELIGIOUS STUDIES (PHILOSOPHY & ETHICS) ADVANCED LEVEL What is the m eaning of life? What happens when we die? Hum ans have long contem plated the answers to these questions. If you have an enquir ing m ind and you enjoy a healthy debate, then Religious Studies could be for you. Building on the skills of GCSE Religious Education, this course will allow you to delve deeper into ethics and m orality on issues such as abortion, euthanasia and the nature and value of hum an life. The study of Philosophy of Relig ion will allow y ou to critically exam ine argum ents for and against the existence of God, relig ious experiences and the problem of suffering and evil.

PSYCHOLOGY ADVANCED LEVEL Are you interested in exploring the workings of a critical m ind, the reasoning behind aggression and stress and the renowned works of Sigm und Freud? If so, the study of Psychology will enable you to explore these areas as well as gaining an insight into how people think, behave and react. You will obtain a num ber of key skills including the ability to confidently discuss, analyse a nd evaluate, and you will acquire an understanding of good research m ethodology. If you are excited by the prospect of how psychological theory can be applied to real wor ld situations, then this is the subject for you.

WHAT YOU CAN STUDY

SOCIOLOGY ADVANCED LEVEL If you have friends, belong to a fam ily, support a team or have ever used social m edia, then you already know som ething about Sociology. Sociology is a study of how individuals relate to the world around them . It analyses how and why som e people in society experience inequality and looks at how inequality affects their developm ent or life chances. Sociology offers students the opportunity to develop the essential knowledge and understanding of central aspects of sociological thought and m ethods. It is designed to encourage students to dem onstrate the application of a range of sk ills and consider the integration of sociological them es; socialisation, culture and identity, social differentiation, power a nd stratification.

SCIENCE LEVEL 3 VOCATIONAL The course in Applied Science will appeal if you are interested in further developing your knowledge and skills in Biology, Chem istry and Physics, but prefer to evidence your learning through coursework rather than exam inations. It offers a wide range of learning opportunities that will show y ou how Science can be used and applied across a range of different work related areas such as haem atology or preparation for degree level study in areas such a s the Biom edical Sciences. It will r esult in a National Certificate in Applied Science which is equivalent to two A-Levels; if you study the Extended Diplom a it is the equivalent of three A-Levels.

SPORT/PHYSICAL EDUCATION LEVEL 3 VOCATIONAL Are you passionate about Sport and Fitness? Are y ou interested in pur suing a career in the sport and leisure industry as a coach or personal trainer? Are you interested in a wide range of sporting activities? This course covers som e really interesting m odules which include the principles of a natom y and physiology, assessing risk in sport, the physiology of fitness and the practical elem ents of fitness testing for sport and exercise. All units are internally assessed continuously throughout the course; there will be no final exam . At the end of each assignm ent, students receive feedback and suggestions for how to im prove their work in the next assignm ent.

SPANISH ADVANCED LEVEL Students will already have studied Spanish successfully up to GCSE level. Being able to speak Spanish is a n im portant life sk ill a s this will open door s to further study in this country or abroad. It is highly valued in the world of business and the global com m unity. Learning a la nguage will offer a range of cultural experiences and the opportunity to travel. You will be learning about m edia, popular culture, healthy lifestyles, personal relationships, the world around, education and em ploym ent. Those who study la nguages are confident and independent learners at ease in social situations and have excellent comm unication skills. pedestrian entrances on Higher Cambridge Street and

Boundary Lane. Car parking for visitors is a ccessible mainly

We are approximately five minutes walk from Oxford Road
