REMEMBRANCE DAY Friday 11th November

Each year on this day Australians observe one minute’s silence in remembrance of those who have died or suffered in all wars and armed conflicts. At 11 am on 11th November 1918 the guns of the Western Front fell silent after more than four years’ of continuous warfare. After suffering a number of defeats and heavy losses, the German forces agreed to an armistice (a truce) with the Allied troops and this signalled the end of WWI. The treaty was signed at 5am on 11 November 1918, but did not officially come into effect until six hours later at 11am. For this reason, Remembrance Day was originally called Armistice Day. In Australia, it was renamed in 1997. The name change broadened the meaning of the day, widening the focus from World War I, to a day which commemorates those who served in any war or conflict. Remembrance Day Traditions A red poppy The Flanders poppy was one of the first plants to grow on the battlefields of France and Belgium. In nineteenth century English poetry, poppies often symbolised sleep or oblivion. After WWI, silk poppies were sold on Armistice Day with proceeds going to a charity for French children and to the Returned Soldiers League (RSL). A sprig of rosemary Many people wear a sprig of rosemary on Remembrance Day and on ANZAC Day. Since ancient times this aromatic herb has been recognised as a sign of remembrance and loyalty. For Australians, rosemary is even more significant as this plant grows wild on the Gallipoli peninsula, serving as another reminder of the ANZAC troops who lost their lives there. A flag at half-mast and Minute Silence On Remembrance Day, flags are flown at half-mast from 10.30am to 11.03am as a sign of mourning and respect. It is said that this tradition stems from sailing ships that lowered their sails at sea to honour an important person or mark a death. A minute Silence is also observed at 11am and the Last Post is played and the Ode is recited.

Kathryn Pepper – Religious Education Leader / Student Support

God of Peace, Jesus your Son shows us the way to true and lasting peace. As we honour the lives of those lost through war, help us to live as peacemakers and seek love and unity for the sake of your kingdom. We make

our prayer in Jesus’ name. Amen.

Please join us at 11am on Friday for

our special Remembrance Day service

Matilda Argoon, Natalya Coomber, Emelia Ingles, Cameron Nicolas, Seth Sleep, Joshua Plesa, Corey Antoinette, Ryan Woolf, Dawson Tifere, Henry Johnson.

We wish you well in your training and competing in the State Finals.

Special thanks to Maxine Green and Nikki Sleep for scoring and supervising and to all other parents and family members who cheered on the team.

SENIOR HOOP TIME REGIONAL FINALS Congratulations to Trinity’s “All Star” team for competing in the Regional Finals at Dandenong on Monday, October 17th. While all the students of Trinity enjoyed a Student Free Day the “All Star” team enthusiastically and proudly represented our school in what was to be a very high level of competition with many opposition teams being made up of A Grade and Representative level basketballers. Even though we didn’t qualify for finals the team should be proud of their persistence, team work and fair play.

Well Done to-

Jordan Jayawadena, Braedon Lo Surdo, Andrew Micallef, Emily Moore, William Moore, Lucas Smith, Shelby Williams, Lachlan Vogrig.

Special thanks to Celeste Vogrig for coaching and to Darren Smith, Rena Lo Surdo and Melissa Moore for their help on the day and to the many parents who supported the team.

Further details are available from the school office. All parent/guardian helpers must sign in at the office before proceeding to the classrooms. Your current Working with Children card must be displayed at all times when working in the classrooms and attending excursions.

A reminder to all Parents/Carers, supervision by School Staff begins at 8.30am before school and after school only at the drop

TRINITY CAR PARK ETIQUETTE For greater safety and visibility, we are requesting that all

drivers reverse park into the marked bays.

Thank you all who use the pedestrian crossing area. You are demonstrating to your children correct road safety practices. Once children cross the pedestrian crossing into the parking area, they, for their safety, need to be placed into vehicles promptly. The car park is NOT a meeting area.

The lane around the edge of the car park (closest to the oval) are for vehicles waiting to pick children up from the Pick-up Zone ONLY.

The two parking bays closest to the office path are the PICK-UP ZONES. These are NO STANDING zones. I f your children are not ready to get into your car as you pull up to the pick-up zone, you must continue on and rejoin the end of the pick-up queue.

There is NO RIGHT TURN when exiting the car park. All vehicles must turn left for the safety of others and to maintain traffic flow.

THE GATES CLOSE AT 9.00am AND RE-OPEN AT 3.00pm. Occasionally they might re-open slightly later due to school activities.

Thank you for your patience and consideration of others.

PASTORAL CARE NEWSLETTER 9th NOVEMBER 2016

It was lovely to see many of the new Preps for 2017 at school on Monday for their first orientation session. It’s a bit like being a grandparent when you

see your playgroup people making this important step in their little lives!

WE PRAY FOR: Mrs Taylor’s Father ( Kristine 4S) whose Father died overseas. We also remember those of our Family and Friends who have died during this month of November.

We also pray for those who are having treatment or tests of any kind; those women who are expecting babies; the VCE students doing exams; the many refugees who are waiting for a place to call “home”; the builders who are working on the school renovations.

HEAT BAGS: Someone asked me for 2 heat bags …I have them for you whoever you are!

MELBOURNE’S CHILD: The November edition is available on the table inside the Readman Building door. There are a number of activities mentioned towards the back of this edition and MANY OF THEM ARE FREE!

CHILDREN’S FREE ACTIVITY The City of Casey has a free children ’s activity entitled “Trash Puppets” to be held at the Education Room at the Wilson Botanical Park the Saturday 12th November from 10am until 12 noon. Bookings are essential on 97975818.

THANK YOU to those Families who continue to send in good, clean uniform pieces for re-sale. They are very much appreciated by other Families.

GIRLS’ HAIR TIES AND HEADBANDS in the school colours are also available from me. Thank you to Mrs De Marchi who makes these for you.

THANK YOU to the Grandmother who sent in the beautiful used cards. I now have enough.

REMEMBRANCE DAY The follow ing was used today by the Year 0ne teachers for Staff Prayer:

I do not know your name, nor in which battle you died.

I do not know your home, nor the tears that were cried.

I do not know where you rest, nor the promises broken.

I do not know your uniform, or your fears which lie unspoken.

But I know your spirit exists –that your courage is admired.

And your sacrifice is honoured by each person it inspired.

And I offer you from my heart ’ thank you’, to guardians unknown, for offering yourselves for us that we may keep freedom at home.

LEST WE FORGET

We also remember those who returned from all wars and the agonies they continue to suffer.

A WORD FROM POPE FRANCIS: I would ask you, as families, to be especially mindful of our call to be missionary disciples of Jesus. This means being ready to go beyond your homes and to care for our brothers and sisters who are most in need. This mission of being in the heart of people is not just a part of my life or a badge I can take off; it is not an extra or just another moment in life. Instead, it is something I cannot uproot from my being without destroying my very self. (A Year with Pope Francis on the Family” pp.335-336)
