From the Principal Trinity Catholic College Lismore the Lantern No. 7 Week Three Term Two Tuesday, 9th May, 2017 Dear Parents/Carers, HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY There are many ways to answer the question, “What is Motherhood?” and one of those ways might be that Motherhood means sharing in the creative power of God. Conceiving, carrying and giving birth to a human being, is as close as any person can get to the act of creation. This is the beginning of Motherhood but it is far from the end. Motherhood is also about nurturing, sacrificing, loving and, ultimately, letting go. Jesus’ mother, Mary, experienced all the above and had the added drama of losing her son for three days. Eventually, she and Joseph found Jesus in the Temple having a discussion with a group of Rabbis. When Mary rebuked Jesus for “treating us this way”, Jesus informed her that the Temple was the first place she should have looked: “Did you not know that I must be about the things of my Father?” Mary was caught up in the tension of fulfilling the daily responsibilities of her role of mother and parenting the Son of God. All mothers are caught up in the world of tension as they try to be all things to their children. Thank God for mothers and thank mothers for helping us to understand an all-loving God. OPEN NIGHT Open Night took place on Thursday 4 May. While we were restricted by what we could do by the flood recovery work, the many comments I received on the night suggested parents were impressed by what we had to offer. More than one parent commented they really liked the more intimate nature of the Champagnat Theatre over the larger TSC. ENROLMENTS Year 7 2018 enrolment applications are due by this Friday. I would ask that you encourage anyone you are aware of who is looking to apply to enrol their child in 2017 to do so now. I have commenced early interviews for those applications already received. FLOOD RECOVERY The recovery from the flood is progressing smoothly. We hope to have a number of additional classrooms back in use early next week. Once these have come back on line we will start looking at the Ministry Centre and associated Offices on SMS as wells as the Chanel/D’Arcy and Nagle/Carthage Head of House Offices. The students have been wonderful in how they have managed the transition back to school. ACCESS BETWEEN THE TWO SITES We hope to have the path behind the Service Station open again in the next day or so. My thanks to St Carthage’s Primary School who have agreed to relocate their boundary fence to enable access to be granted again. GOVERNMENT FUNDING You no doubt would be aware of the recent Federal Government Funding announcement and the reaction of the Catholic Education authorities to this announcement. I have attached to this edition of the Lantern a statement from the National Catholic Education Commission that outlines their concerns. the Lantern No. 7 Week Three Term Two

Tuesday, 9th May, 2017

Dear Parents/Carers,

HAPPY MOTHERS’ DAY There are many ways to answer the question, “What is Motherhood?” and one of those ways might be that Motherhood means sharing in the creative power of God.

YEAR 9 ALTITUDE DAYLate last week I sent notes regarding this day home with all Year 9 students. It is not compulsory, but I see much potential in the day for the students who are able to attend. I am very keen to increase the uptake of boys in the day and I hope those of you with sons would encourage them to attend.

OPEN NIGHTThis was held last Thursday night and it was very much scaled down from the Open Night as you know it. I realise that people were disappointed that they could not view the facilities on the evening, but we will plan to offer opportunities for a viewing once more of the flood recovery work has been done. If you know of families who may be considering Trinity next year a positive word about the school, its students and teachers would be appreciated.

SAFE ON SOCIAL MEDIALast Monday Ms Kirra Pendergast presented a session on social media safety to students in Years 8-10. In essence, the presentation was all about ‘tidying up what you have created on social media’. For most parents, social media might be limited to Facebook or perhaps Instagram, but your children are using many other platforms and I would be very surprised if parents are aware of them all. The stranger danger element was addressed as was cyberbullying, identity theft and ways to reclaim images that have been posted. It certainly has laid the groundwork for a conversation at home about social media.

NAPLANAs I write, students in Years 7 and 9 are starting their first Naplan paper. This year Naplan has been afforded a greater level of importance, especially for Year 9 students, as it now forms part of the pathway to HSC study. Lets hope they all do the best they can.

Welcome back to Term 2. I would like to thank sincerely the vast majority of senior students who were at the forefront of support to the College in the wake of the flood. I was so proud of all that they contributed to ensuring our school could be up and running as quickly as it was. I also felt humbled by the support of our parent body and other members of the community who offered their assistance. It makes you realise what a great place we have here in Lismore.

YEAR 11 & 12 VACCINATIONS – MAY 22ND & 23RD NSW health has asked that all Year 11 and 12 students have access to a vaccination against meningococcal. This is an important public health initiative to protect your students, their families and the broader community from meningococcal W which has emerged as a significant cause of invasive meningococcal disease (IMD) in NSW. More information about IMD is available on the NSW Health website at www.health.nsw.gov.au/Infectious/factsheets/Pages/meningococcal_disease.aspx.

The vaccine is given as a single dose, protects against meningococcal serotypes A, C, W and Y and has been shown to be both safe and effective.

All Year 11 and 12 students will have received the consent material by the end of this week and I would ask that ALL families complete the form and return it to the College with the students on 22nd May. A schedule will be distributed to the students next week.

YEAR 12 This Term is one to knuckle down and concentrate on reviewing the mid course exam results with the intention to ensure that in the next marking period each student will attempt to do better by at least 10 -15 %, or more. This can happen, but it does require a real commitment to yourself and your goals.

At the end of last week, I had an opportunity to hand out the Year 12 Jerseys, can I ask parents to assist us, in that the wearing of the jerseys is restricted to only on a Wednesday. Each senior student should have their own College blazer and/ or College jumper, these are to be worn first and foremost. The Blazer is needed right up until Graduation Day so it is an essential item for the year.

YEAR 11 This Term for Year 11 is also one to consolidate learning’s, recognize where more effort is needed and to not be dis-heartened by results at this stage. Preliminary is the practice year one to stretch yourself and assess your capabilities. Year 11 students also need a College Blazer as the only jacket type of clothing to be worn to and from school each day. Students who do have the College jumper can also use it to protect from the cold.

YEAR 10 UPDATEBy all reports the work experience opportunity was great, and we are certainly grateful to all the organisations that had our Year 10 students with them. Year 10 this Term will need to focus on their end of Semester one exams and other assessment tasks, prior to reports being generated for this Semester. I am thankful that the majority of Year 10 students have moved into the Senior School well, but should there be concerns please contact either the Head of House or myself, we are more than happy to assist you.

To secure a place on the trip, students will need to collect a form from the front office and return it by Thursday, 1 June, as a commitment to organisation is required. Please include $200.00 payment with permission note and return to the school office. We will complete registration as a group once we have an idea of numbers. Proclaim Lismore StudentsYEAR 11 STREET RETREAT – A PENTECOST EXPERIENCE

Proclaim Lismore aims to provide a comprehensive continuum of Intentional Student Discipleship Programs across the Diocese for students from Year 5 to Year 12. These gatherings aim to bring Catholic secondary students together to meet like-minded peers and to celebrate and meet with other young people who practice their faith.

In 2017 6 Year 11 students from our school will join students from each of the other parish secondary schools in attending the Street Retreat experience in Brisbane. This experience will form, equip and empower students to return to their parish communities with a passion for social justice and greater sense of the call of Jesus Christ to serve the poor.

Participants in the Street Retreat will spend from Thursday night 22 June to Sunday evening 25 June working with a range of social justice initiatives in Brisbane. Their participation may make a small contribution to those being served – but the event is first and foremost an exercise in discipleship formation. Participants will find the activities on the street retreat challenging and possibly confronting. Many activities run either very late at night or very early in the morning. The retreat will culminate in a celebration of Sunday Eucharist. In addition, all participants must commit to a follow up Social Justice activity to be held in their own parish/school community following the Brisbane formation experience. Details of these activities will be made available to students upon their selection.

In discerning which students might participate in this retreat experience, the Diocese has recommended the following selection criteria;• Catholic students who can demonstrate

involvement in their parish.• Catholic students who have attended previous

student discipleship programs. • Students who exhibit the following attributes: • a strong sense of social justice• initiative• common sense • a mature character

A large number of Trinity students have already expressed an interest in this event. We can, however, only offer 6 places. Any student who would like to be considered is asked to write a brief statement supporting their nomination on the information sheets provided by Mr Miller, and available at the front office. Attention should be given to the stated selection criteria. Nominations should be handed to Mr Miller no later than Monday 15 May.

Successful applicants will be asked to make a contribution of $50.00 towards the cost of this experience. LEAD

This year Parent Assembly’s theme happens to be, ’REACH OUT, COLLABORATE & SERVE’. Simple empowering words that have literally ‘come to life’ through the example of many hands & hearts & loads of positive actions! Actions which have been ‘witnessed’ time & time again during the last few weeks, in the wider Lismore community and right here in our own Trinity school community. Trinity’s recovery in the aftermath of the devastating flood waters has been all about, reaching out, collaborating & serving!

GIFT CARD DONATION APPEAL

Parent Assembly Lismore responded to the call to ‘Reach out’ by inspiring the initiative of donating Gift cards (e.g. Coles, Woolies & Target) which have and will be distributed to flood affected families who need our ongoing support. A huge ‘Thank you” to all those who have already generously purchased & donated gift cards.

If your family would like to be involved in this practical gesture of giving support, Trinity’s Parent Assembly team welcome further Gift card donations. Please send or drop your gift cards into either the SJS or SMS office and Parent Assembly Reps will collect them and ensure that they will be distributed to Trinity families.

LOOKING AHEAD?

This conference will offer inspirational ideas & practical strategies to help create family harmony and learn more about how to be a partner in your child’s educational journey. There are still some fully funded places available, so please contact Mrs Jo Kelly (P.A. Cluster Organiser) at the Catholic Schools Office: - 6687 6256 if interested in attending.

LOOKING BACK……

Embrace documentary film nightIn Term 1 The ’Embrace’ documentary Film night was held on 27 March in the Champagnat Theatre. The evening started with supper and a great social opportunity for the group of 70 + women who attended the event to connect.

A recent global study found that almost 90 per cent of women are “highly dissatisfied with their bodies”. Almost as high is the number who used the words “hate” or “disgust” when talking about their bodies. It showed the importance behind acceptance, the meaning behind working hard and overall, being able to finally embrace one’s self. Embrace is transmitting a valuable message that all women should be hearing loud and clear. It is a matter of great urgency — and worry, too — that right now most are unable to receive that message. Embrace’s sole intent is to decode and clarify the many misconceptions about the female body that still exist in this supposedly informed era.

It’s safe to say that ‘Embrace’ is the kind of informative, helpful film that will help to change the way people think about women’s bodies. The film inspired a very positive response with our audience and the start of a conversation about the important message it holds!

Trinity Open Night - May 4 Parent Assembly Reps attended ‘Open Night’ on Thursday evening last week to promote Parent Assembly & it’s purpose. We were a ‘quiet presence’ at this occasion, chatting with parents and handing out promotional material outlining ‘what we are all about’ … building community & connecting parents through the informative educational opportunities that are made available to parents each term are definitely an important focus! Thank you to Br John for his support & allowing us this opportunity and to John Loadsman for our prime position in the SJS library!

Thank you for your continued support and we look forward to a busy Term 2!
